COWBOY JUNKIES - Renmin Park: The Nomad Series, Volume 1 (2010)

Renmin Park, the first volume in the Cowboy Junkies Nomad Series, which projects an 18-month cycle that will produce four albums, was named for the park where guitarist/songwriter Michael Timmins spent a considerable amount of time while in the process of adopting two children from China. Built on a foundation of loops, conversations, street performances, and other found sounds from the region, Renmin Park arrived in June 2010. - All Music Guide

This is one of the most experimental moments for Cowboy Junkies. Experimental in many ways too. A lot of these songs do not use the lovely, narcotized vocals of Margo Timmins and it's kind of weird but enthralling to hear that they sound good even without her help but her vocals in some of the songs are undeniably welcome. Also the band tries an eastern (particularly Chinese) flavor in the songs as it is inspired by their travels to China. We hear found sound recordings blending with their Alt Country flavors and it's a successful mix. The album is not one of their best but it is certainly one of their riskiest.

VANILLA FUDGE - Orchestral Fudge (2008)

Vanilla Fudge were a bit of a one trick pony in the late '60s, but it was a hell of a trick, and it turned what was essentially a cover band into a heavy-sounding, nearly prog rock outfit, all driven by the world-class rhythm section of Carmine Appice on drums and Tim Bogert on bass. The Fudge sound template was set in 1967 when they recorded a cough syrup-slow version of the Supremes' "Keep Me Hangin' On" that was full of an ominous, relentless tension, and the song became a huge hit when it was released a second time in 1968. A band built deliberately on bombastic pretension, it should probably come as no surprise that a rejuvenated Fudge have now issued a new album of their classic tracks, including, of course, a fresh version of "Keep Me Hangin' On," accompanied by a full orchestra, and it actually works more than it doesn't, and when it doesn't work, it isn't the orchestra's fault. The problem with this band has always been a lack of striking material, and when the song they've chosen to dose with heaviness fails to support the sonic infrastructure, orchestra and all, it can seem like much ado about not much at all. That said, the new version of "Keep Me Hangin' On" still sounds wonderfully ominous, powerful, and huge, and it's hard to resist Fudge's steroid-injected blow-up take on Junior Walker's "Shotgun," which is based on a riff so sturdy that nothing could possibly bring it to its knees. The album ends in embarrassment, though, with the band's version of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy," a song Appice wrote for Rod Stewart back in the 1970s, and Fudge's rendition of it pulls off the impossible. It actually makes Stewart's version sound classy and elegant, an accomplishment that is nothing short of amazing. ~ All Music Guide

The meeting of The Fudge and Orchestra is something we have wanted to do for a long time and this album seemed like a natural progression to achieving a sound in spirit with our original concepts for the band. - Tim Bogart and Carmine Appice.

V.A. - Hear 'n Aid (1986)

The mid-'80s charity trend in popular music even extended into the heavy metal and hard rock community. Veteran vocalist Ronnie James Dio formed the Hear 'n Aid project in 1985 to raise money for famine relief all over the world. It didn't get much media coverage and it didn't achieve blockbuster sales like Band Aid or USA for Africa, but Hear 'n Aid did generate a respectable amount of revenue. On May 20 and 21, 1985, 40 hard rock musicians joined together as Hear 'n Aid at A&M Records Studios and recorded "Stars." This dramatic epic features plenty of vocal gymnastics and guitar shredding. The participants included, among many others: Dio's Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain, Vivian Campbell, Dio himself, and Claude Schnell; Iron Maiden's Dave Murray and Adrian Smith; Journey's Neal Schon; Judas Priest's Rob Halford; Yngwie Malmsteen; Ted Nugent; Spinal Tap's David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls; and Twisted Sister's Eddie Ojeda. The other eight Hear 'n Aid tracks include live offerings from Accept, Dio, Kiss, Motörhead, Rush, and Scorpions, and two studio selections from Jimi Hendrix and Y&T. ~ All Music Guide

MIKE OLDFIELD - The Complete (1985)

The Complete Mike Oldfield is a compilation album by Mike Oldfield. The double album is subdivided into four sections, with The instrumental section and The Vocal section containing shorter pieces, and The Complex section and The Live section containing excerpts from Oldfield's longer pieces.

Appearing in '85, this compilation remains one of the best available to those of who believe in the strength of his earlier work, when compared to the weak 'Earth Moving', for example. Spread over two CD's as opposed to the flabby 'Elements' package, you get the classic short instrumentals ('Blue Peter', 'Guilty' etc), the best songs ('Moonlight Shadow', 'Crime of Passion' etc) on CD 1. CD2 brings generous snippets of the early full-length works - 'Tubular Bells' & the seminal 'Ommadawn', but these are supplemented by four live tracks, from a 4-year period ending in '84. Listen to 'Mount Teide' - LOUD - and tell me straight you don't believe in the power of live music - even in a recording - to move the soul and send shivers down the spine. Awesome. A genuine Five-Stars. - amazon.com

NIRVANA - Greatest Hits (2008)

Nirvana were a hugely influential alternative rock band, responsible for popularising the Seattle-born grunge sound that they helped to pioneer. Thanks to their breakthrough into mainstream consciousness, bands such as Pearl Jam, The Smashing Pumpkins and Nickelback were able to go on to sell tens-of-millions of records.

Nirvana's debut album, Bleach (1989), was released by independent label Sub Pop and only sold 6000 copies upon release, though it was picked up by college radio stations and showed much promise. It has since gone on to sell over four million copies after Nirvana's later success. In 1990, original members Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar) and Krist Novoselic (bass) recruited David Grohl to play drums, and Nirvana's classic line-up was set. They signed to a major label, Geffen, and in 1991 released their defining statement: Nevermind. Said to speak for the "generation X" of the time, Cobain was held up as an icon for disaffected teenagers worldwide. Nevermind gradually climbed to the very top of the Billboard charts, thanks partly to the lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", which was a worldwide smash hit. The album went down in history as one of the greatest and most influential LPs in rock music. It is now thought to have sold over 25 million copies. In 1993, Nirvana attempted the impossible: a follow-up to the universally praised Nevermind. In Utero was not as polished as its predecessor, but was arguably as good musically. Critics were full of praise for it, and it still stands as one of the greatest albums in alternative rock. However, Nevermind had a far bigger cultural impact and is regarded as a more 'important' album.

In 1994, Cobain killed himself with a shotgun. He had been strling with heroin addiction, and was never fully able to cope with the pressures of international fame. Since his death, many fans have speculated that he was in fact murdered, but this has never been substantiated. After Nirvana, Dave Grohl went on to further success as the frontman for the Foo Fighters, while Novoselic dabbled in various other musical projects, and became involved in local politics. - amazon.com

"On the Rural Route 7609" is a box set by rock singer/songwriter John Mellencamp that was released on June 15, 2010. JIMMIE VAUGHAN - Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites (2010) thumbup

The blues-rock master's first album in nine years! Blues, Ballads and Favorites is blues-rock pioneer Jimmie Vaughan's tribute to the music that inspired him, with covers of songs by Little Richard, Jimmy Reed, Roy Milton, Roscoe Gordon and others. The album was recorded in Austin, Texas, and features legendary blues singer Lou Ann Barton on two tracks. Other highlights include a brand-new instrumental, "Comin' & Goin'," and a version of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" featuring vocals by Bill Willis, the famed Hammond organ player who recorded with James Brown and Bill Doggett. Vaughan founded the iconic Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1974, and they became famous for the high-octane blues-rock sound that earned them critical acclaim in the '70s and platinum-selling albums in the '80s. In 1990, Vaughan recorded a duets album, Family Style, with his brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan, shortly before the latter's untimely death, and then went on to a successful solo career. - amazon.com

SOLOMON BURKE - Nothing's Impossible (2010) thumbup

This magnificent album, destined to be an all-time essential in any library of classic soul, is a bittersweet triumph. On one hand, it marks the 70th birthday year of Solomon Burke, who ranks with the very greatest R&B immortals; on the other, it's the final full album produced by another soul legend, producer Willie Mitchell, the Memphis architect of the Hi Records sound and the man behind everlasting hits by Al Green, Ann Peebles, and so many others. Willie Mitchell died on January 5, 2010. NOTHING'S IMPOSSIBLE delivers a dozen tracks of timeless soul magic in the purest Memphis style with the deepest Southern roots. Yet there's not the slightest whiff of nostalgia about the project. Solomon Burke's voice is full-strength, and Willie Mitchell's arrangements flourish in the Hi-style: tight, right horns; rock solid kick drums and mellow bass; country guitar fills, and the sweetest, sparest string arrangements to enhance the romance and the heartbreak of these amazing songs. Solomon Burke was an important early soul pioneer despite never having made a major impact upon the pop audience. On his `60s singles for Atlantic, he brought a country influence into R&B with emotional phrasing and deeply powerful melodic ballads and midtempo songs. His combination of gospel, pop, country, and production polish was basic to the recipe of early soul. Solomon, like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett, was an important influence upon the Rolling Stones, who covered Burke's "Cry to Me" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" on their early albums. Over the years, Solomon Burke has become one of the most visible living exponents of classic soul music. Burke's 2002 release, Don't Give Up on Me was hailed as a major comeback for the legendary soul man. And now, in this sublime collaboration with a master producer, Solomon Burke has written another chapter in this unsurpassed body of work. When it comes to real soul music, Solomon and the late Willie Mitchell have once again proven that NOTHING'S IMPOSSIBLE. - amazon.com

FOGHAT - Last Train Home (2010) thumbup

With their 21st recording, legendary blues-rockers Foghat once again prove that they’re never content to just sit on their asses and simply enjoy the ride. Last Train Home represents the band’s return to the blues-influenced rock n’ roll sound that has served Foghat extremely well in the past. "Last Train Home" is a mix of traditional blues tunes and originals, and fulfills a dream shared by founding Foghat members Roger Earl and the late Lonesome Dave Peverette, who passed away in 2000. Among the 12 blues rock tracks on Last Train Home are numbers written by well-known blues artists like Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Eddie “Bluesman” Kirkland, who makes a guest appearance on guitar and vocals in his own song, “In My Dreams.” Also performing on the album are Roger Earl’s keyboardist brother, Colin Earl, and retired New York City electrician Lefty “Sugar Lips” Lefkowitz, who blows a mean harmonica. Regardless, "Last Train Home" is an overall high-quality effort and fans of blues rock should definitely give it a spin. - creativeloafing.com

DAVID BROMBERG - Try Me One More Time (2007)

David Bromberg is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. Bromberg has an eclectic style, playing bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz, country and western, and rock & roll equally well. He is known for his quirky, humorous lyrics, and the ability to play rhythm and lead guitar at the same time. In 2008, he was nominated for a Grammy Award.

On his first solo album in nearly two decades, folk guitarist David Bromberg picks up just exactly where he left off. TRY ME ONE MORE TIME is an all-acoustic set of 16 songs, nearly all of them traditional folk and blues tunes, such as the ballad "East Virginia" and the sprightly instrumental showcase "Buck Dancer's Choice." Along with these, Bromberg essays a pair of tunes by Robert Johnson and one each by Blind Willie McTell, Reverend Gary Davis, and Elizabeth Cotton. It's proof of Bromberg's mastery that in this setting, Bob Dylan's "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" sounds like a beloved old folk standard. - cduniverse.com

OZZY OSBOURNE - Scream (2010)

"Scream" is the tenth studio album by British heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne, released on June 2010. The album was produced and written with Kevin Churko. This is a first album to not feature lead guitarist Zakk Wylde since his debut on the 1988 album "No Rest" for the Wicked" and not feature drummer Mike Bordin since his debut on the 2001 album "Down to Earth". Playing guitar on this album is Firewind guitarist Gus G., and playing drums is former Ted Nugent, Rob Zombie, and Alice Cooper drummer Tommy Clufetos. "Scream" was originally titled "Soul Sucka" but Osbourne decided against it after negative feedback from fans. Ozzy has stated that this album reminds him of an "Ozzy/Black Sabbath" album. The first single from the album, titled "Let Me Hear You Scream" debuted on CSI: New York on 14 April and has since spent 8 weeks on the Billboard Rock Songs, peaking at 7.

THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND - Roadsongs (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

This double-live album by the Derek Trucks Band may end up being the last for this version of the group, at least for a while. Trucks and wife Susan Tedeschi joined forces in 2010 as the Derek Trucks-Susan Tedeschi Band. Some of the players come from Trucks' organization: Kofi Burbridge and singer Mike Mattison with bassist Oteil Burbridge, and drummer J.J. Johnson, among others. Which brings us to Roadsongs. Recorded in support of 2009's Grammy-winning Already Free, this set contains over 100 minutes of music from across his recording career. For starters, this is the most sonically satisfying live record Trucks has released to date. It's full of dynamics, beautiful separation, and warm, present sound while capturing the raw, spontaneous energy the band plays with live. The material ranges from five tracks from Already Free (four of which appear on disc one), including a burning "Down in the Flood," a swinging "Get What You Deserve," a sparse "Days Is Almost Gone," and an open country lope in "Already Free." Disc one is bookended by the woolly opener "I'll Find My Way," and a 14-plus-minute "Afro Blue" to close (the latter with gorgeous flute work by Burbridge). Disc two opens with "I Know" from the previous album and then takes off into originals and covers that include live standards such as reworked versions of Bob Marley's "Rastaman Chant," and "Key to the Highway" (both have incredible drum and percussion work by Yonrico Scott and Count Mbutu, respectively). The blazing horn section on "Down Don't Bother Me" makes it (arguably) the greatest existing recorded version (it's easy to hear in Mattison's deeply moving vocal how empathically Trucks responds). The medley of "Get Out of My Life Woman/Who Knows" begins as a shimmering, big-band Chicago blues that gives way to a slippery, in-the-pocket James Brown-style funk jam. The set closes with a transcendent nine-and-half minute "Anyday." BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN & THE E STREET BAND - Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 (2006) thumbupthumbupthumbup

This excellent two-disc concert set captures Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performing in London for the first time in 1975. Recorded just after the release of "Born To Run" - which would ensure the Boss's place on the rock'n'roll map for all eternity - The Hammersmith Odeon concert represents a young band bursting with ambition, attitude, and energy, and ripping through a set with the hunger that has rightfully conferred legendary status upon Springsteen concerts.

From the spare opening version of "Thunder Road" to the rollicking "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)," Bruce is in fine form here, and his band, shifting between soulful R&B, jazzy explorations, and spit-fire rock, plays like a monster. In fact, there is a ragged leanness to the band's style that would begin to ebb some years later, and while Springsteen's backing ensembles have remained powerful and ferocious up into the 2000s, there is something pure and beautiful about this particular group. As such, it is a genuine must-have for any rock-&-roll fan.

BRYAN FERRY + ROXY MUSIC - The Platinum Collection (2004)

Originally conceived for the British market, where Roxy Music and its debonair frontman Bryan Ferry were much more popular than in the States, The Platinum Collection gathers every band and Ferry single, along with some popular album tracks, on three chronologically arranged discs. As an overview of both acts' extensive and connected careers, from 1973 through Ferry's 2002 Frantic album, this is a far more comprehensive overview than the many single compilations already released. Initially, there was a substantial musical dissimilarity between lead vocalist Ferry's solo work, much of it less artsy and aggressive than early Roxy songs such as "Do the Strand" and "Virginia Plain." Eventually, by the late 70s the two became less distinct. The primary difference being Ferry's tendency to radically rearrange musty pop, folk, and R&B covers between his more sensually lush, dance oriented music. Roxy Music disbanded in 1983 leaving Ferry, whose solo work comprises almost half of this package and the entire third disc, to carry the torch. Short but pertinent notes about each song, along with small reproductions of the original British picture sleeves, provide some historical background. And although all three CDs include 15 tracks, there is plenty of unused room on each for more music. Regardless, this is an essential addition to any British rock fan's collection. The compilation is nearly as classy and sophisticated as the stylish band, and its suave singer, deserves. - amazon.com

SCOTT McKEON - Trouble (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Scott McKeon may be just twenty three but he has already given a lifetime of dedication to his craft as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Initially inspired by his dad's love of blues and fifties rock n roll music he took up the guitar at the age of four. In 1998, Scott was the winner of Guitarist Magazine's "Young Guitarist of the Year" and by the age of fourteen, he was already fronting his own band. Scott is a raw and naturally gifted guitarist who has come into his own as a singer/songwriter. His work producing other artists inspired him to take the lead in producing his new record. Scott’s second album, Trouble , will be released in March 29th 2010 on Mascot Provogue Records and contains 12 new songs, including contributions form Robbie McIntosh and David Ryan Harris from John Mayer’s band. Of the album, McKeon says, “With Trouble, I wanted to be able to incorporate bluesy guitar soloing into a more soulful rock environment. MIKE OLDFIELD - "Hergest Ridge" & "Ommadawn" (1974/75) [Original recording remastered]

- Hergest Ridge (1974) [2010 Remastered]
Released as another lengthy composition, Hergest Ridge was the album that followed Mike Oldfield's momentous Tubular Bells release, with many of the same instrumental elements and methods employed throughout its two sections. Because of the time of its release, Hergest Ridge was overshadowed by the effects of Oldfield's first album for Virgin, but even so, he still manages to invoke some interesting patches of music by using instruments like the glockenspiel, sleigh bells, the lowrey organ, oboes, and a variety of mandolins and guitars to maintain the same type of diversity as Tubular Bells. Symphonic throughout most of the album's two parts, the highlight of Hergest Ridge is Oldfield's use of 90 multi-tracked guitars which are clustered together to create one of the most unique sounds ever to surface on his albums. Actually, Hergest Ridge entered the British charts in the number one spot in the fall of 1974, but Tubular Bells finally took its place only three weeks later. The album was highly regarded in the U.K. upon its release and it continues Oldfield's creativity, proving that the genius put forth on his claim-to-fame album would indeed have some effect on works to come. - cduniverse.com

- Ommadawn (1975) [2010 Remastered]
"Ommadawn" represents a creative peak for Oldfield that is often overshadowed by the huge commercial success of his debut Tubular Bells. Oldfield employed the same format he had used on his previous two albums, with both sides of the album comprising a lengthy instrumental collage. This time he drew on a greater range of musical styles, using recurring motifs that had recognizable African, Eastern European and Irish sources (Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains being responsible for the latter). The album was also notable for the way Oldfield collaborated with the other musicians, drawing attention away from his image as the self-styled studio recluse.

RAINBOW - Anthology 1975-1984 (2009)

2009 two CD anthology from the classic British rockers formed by guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore. This double disc set spans almost the entire career of Rainbow and is a celebration of all that was great and then greater still with the Anglo-American Heavy Rock giant. From their first incarnation with vocalist Ronnie James Dio whose fantasy sword n' sorcery lyrics shaped the early image of the band and whose significant presence takes-up the entire first disc, through to the chart scaling heights enjoyed with the Graham Bonnet line-up and the likes of 'Since You Been Gone' and then finally ending with the smooth-throated delivery and U.S. AOR styling's brought by Joe Lynn Turner, all the hits and more are crammed into this attractive package. With a nod also to Blackmore's curious sense of humor and the addition of tracks such as, 'Snowman' and a previously unreleased live rendition of 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' from 1980's Monsters Of Rock Festival, this release stands-out significantly from previous hits collections in both content and execution. - amazon.com

MC5 - Anthology 1965-1971 (2008)

The Motor City Five were one of the rawest bands of the Age of Aquarius, a fire-breathing, politically charged beast that could have been called "punk" if the genre existed then. Their raw, brutish guitars evoked the squall and chaos of free-jazz saxophones while doughty frontman Rob Tyner wailed his hard-blues vocals, whipping the crowds into a collective frenzy. ANTHOLOGY 1965-1971 represents a hearty two-disc helping of the Five, more comprehensive than previous collections. Present, of course, is the original uncensored version of "Kick Out the Jams," along with a number of alternate and live versions of their most famous songs. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Strange Country (2006)

"After the bizarre Beyond Nashville albums I was expecting Strange Country to be more of the same: an examination of the outlandish, creepy, morose and downright crazy side of the country music scene. To a degree that is the case but, because the weirdness that is alternative country is no longer a novelty, Strange Country has an unexpected air of normality about it. The inclusion of stalwarts like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and, the grandfather of them all, Hank Williams goes to show that country music had always had an odd gothic edge but, in truth, the chosen songs are fairly standard. Also included are plenty of, what would have been considered a few years back, the cream of the upcoming crop. Calexico's "Ballad Of Cable Hogue" is a great song but is also a regular choice when it comes to compilations. "So Much Wine" by The Handsome Family is a top class warped Christmas song to rival "Fairytale Of New York". Entries from Bright Eyes, Micah Hinson and Giant Sand are acceptable without being exceptional. Only the wonderful "Rock Bottom Riser" by Smog really made me want to listen to more from an artist. So what about the strange? Well I can't help thinking that the only reason to want to cover "Bohemian Rhapsody" country style is for the novelty and believe me it doesn't work. In reality the only strange track here is Porter Wagoner's "The Rubber Room" which tries to do for insanity what "The Mercy Seat" did for execution – and it almost succeeds." - rateyourmusic.com

Of particular interest is a public performance of the soundtrack, “Edge of Darkness” - as well as the specifically composed “Concerto For Electric Guitar Movement 1&2” which is unforgettable. The music doesn’t come together on all of the numbers, but when it does, it is sheer magic. “Sunshine Of Your Love” is a stand-out. This is Eric as you never heard him before. Note that only two tracks were used on 24 Nights — “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Hard Times”.

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS - Mojo (2010)

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70's. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc 'The Live Anthology,' which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary 'Runnin Down A Dream.' There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers album. With 'MOJO,' they have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren't coming back.... - amazon.com

THE STEVE MILLER BAND - Bingo! [Special Edition] (2010)

"BINGO!" is the album Steve Miller has waited his entire life to make. Reaching back to his apprenticeship as a young man on the Chicago blues scene, Miller and co-producer Andy Johns brought classic rhythm and blues numbers that have been at the foundation of his music throughout his career into the 21st century. A true return to Miller's roots, "BINGO!" echoes his early years in the Chicago music scene and features carefully chosen and crafted blues tracks performed in distinctive Steve Miller Band fashion. "BINGO!" was co-produced by Andy Johns (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen), with artwork designed by the legendary Storm Thorgerson. These recordings feature longtime Steve Miller Band member Norton Buffalo, who sadly passed away in 2009. This "Special Edition" contains 4 bonus tracks. - amazon.com

His first studio album in 17 years, "Bingo!" collects some of Miller's favorite blues and R&B songs. The album will feature guests like Joe Satriani, Michael Carabello, and Jose Areas, as well as the late Steve Miller Band harmonica player Norton Buffalo, and will be the first release on Miller's own Space Cowboy Records.

BRYAN ADAMS - So Far So Good (1993)

01. Summer Of '69
02. Straight From The Heart
03. It's Only Love
04. Can't Stop This Thing We Started
05. Do I Have To Say The Words?
06. This Time
07. Run To You
08. Heaven
09. Cuts Like A Knife
10. (Everything I Do) I Do It For You
11. Somebody
12. Kids Wanna Rock
13. Heat Of The Night
14. Please Forgive Me

"So Far So Good" offers up 13 of his previous hits plus a new song, "Please Forgive Me," a gooey, Michael Bolton-like ballad. The album starts out with "Summer of '69," the appealing autobiographical song about the 10-year-old Adams learning to play his first guitar in Ontario, and includes "(Everything I Do) I Do for You," the synth-laced ballad that wound up in the Guinness Book of World Records after topping the British singles charts for 16 weeks. With its over-the-top, gravelly vocals, So Far So Good reminds one of Rod Stewart's 1980s work when he was coasting on past achievements. Unfortunately, Adams has never had a period like Stewart's glory years in the '70s. - amazon.com

RANDY CRAWFORD - Every Kind Of Mood - Randy, Randi, Randee (1997)

03. I'd Be an Angel
04. Unwounded
05. Captain of Her Heart
06. Wishing On a Star
07. Are You Sure

09. Johnny
10. Let It Rain
11. Living In Silence
12. Changes
13. Almaz
14. Honey For My Honey
15. Hymn of the Big Wheel

Every Kind of Mood may not quite deliver on the promise of the title, but it's nevertheless a fine collection of smooth urban R&B and adult contemporary pop. To her credit, Randy Crawford decides to push forward a little bit - for every schmaltzy "Captain of Her Heart," there's something as stylish and unexpected as the cover of Massive Attack's "Hymn of the Big Wheel." It's moments like "Big Wheel," "Are You Sure" and the version of Aretha Franklin's "Johnny" that make the missteps forgivable and make Every Kind of Mood an engaging listen. ~ All Music Guide

MIKE OLDFIELD - ...compilations...

1981 - Music Wonderland
"Music Wonderland" is a compilation album by Mike Oldfield released in 1981. With Mike Oldfield clearly beginning his shift away from ambitious multi-instrumental epics into more pop-inflected territory, what better time could there have been for his label to remind listeners that he'd always had an eye for the three-minute single? True, nothing here is as overt as "Family Man," the hit that he and his band wrote for Hall & Oates, but still a cover of ABBA's "Arrival" swiftly followed by such stirring delights as "Portsmouth," "In Dulci Jubilo," "On Horseback," "The Sailor's Hornpipe," and a pulsating live take of the disco hit "Guilty" depict a musician who was a far cry from the super-serious prodigy that the media still preferred to view him as. Even the inevitable extracts from Tubular Bells and Ommadawn concentrate on the most toe-tapping sequences, to wrap up an album of startling excitement and, yes, surprising brevity. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. Arrival 02. Portsmouth 03. Sheba 04. Blue Peter 05. Extract From Tubular Bells 06. Sailor's Hornpipe 07. Punkadiddle 08. Wonderful Land 09. In Dulci Jubilo 10. Extract From Ommadawn 11. On Horseback 12. Guilty (Live) 13. North Star/Platinum Finale

1993 - Elements: The Best Of Mike Oldfield
Long before new age and instrumental ambient music became their own genres and million-dollar industries, Mike Oldfieldwas making meticulously composed atmospheric pieces that challenged stylistic categories and listener expectations. Dense, layered, and symphonic in conception, Oldfield's compositions drew on world music, classical, rock, and pop, and usually featured his own talents as a multi-instrumentalist. ELEMENTS is a 16-track best-of collection that culls from as many albums. Kicking off with "Tubular Bells", the song made famous by its use in THE EXORCIST, the set then provides an overview of Oldfield's eclectic musical offerings (which often featured guest vocalists). The wistful pop of "Moonlight Shadow", and the hypnotic, pulsing groove of "Foreign Affair" are only two highlights among many. ELEMENTS proves an excellent sampler of the many facets of Oldfield's musical universe. - amazon.com

WIDESPREAD PANIC - Dirty Side Down (2010)

The recording studio is generally considered anathema to those in the jam band community. But Georgia sextet Widespread Panic has quietly discovered how to make very good albums that carefully balance its chops as both players and songwriters. Its new album, "Dirty Side Down," plays to all of Widespread Panic's strengths, from the intricate weaving of John Bell's and Jimmy Herring's guitars with John Hermann's keyboards to a stylistic sweep that spans from the epic, prog-like opening suite "Saint Ex" to breezier fare like the title track and the spritely gallop of "Clinic Cynic." The band shuffles in a bluesy vein on "Visiting Day" and "Shut Up and Drive," while dipping into jazz on the short instrumental "St. Louis" and taking an R&B turn with the bouncy "Jaded Tourist." A rootsy cover of the late Vic Chesnutt's "This Cruel Thing" and the classic lover's-on-the-road lament "When You Coming Home" are quieter and more atmospheric, while "North" is grooving guitar rock with a swelling, buoyant chorus. This is an accomplished work from a group that understands itself completely, deftly straddling the line between instinct and craft. - billboard.com

12 songs that incorporate Panic's unique blend of rock, jazz and blues inspired textures into songs flowing with melody, rhythm and emotion.

ORIANTHI - Believe II (2010)

With her mind-blowing mix of heavy metal guitar prowess and bluesy, soulful vocals, Orianthi will draw some justifiably well-earned comparisons to such giants of rock guitar as Jimi Hendrix and her own idol, Carlos Santana, on her 2009 sophomore album, Believe — re-released in 2010 as "Believe (II)" with four different songs than the original version, including a cover of John Waite's "Missing You." That said, her style hews closer to the more finger-frenetic pyrotechnics of such '70s and '80s icons as Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. Throw in her ability to sell a lyric and carry a strong melodic vocal phrase while also throwing down some devastating slabs of heavy metal riffage, and she starts to look a heckuvalot like the fantasy love child of Prince and Lita Ford. What's even more delicious is how, at face value, "Believe (II)" fits nicely next to studio-crafted — albeit stylistically successful - albums by Disney teen rock acts like Ashley Tisdale, Demi Lovato, and Miley Cyrus, the difference being that while those pretend-rock teen divas get backed by studio musicians, Orianthi IS the backing musician. She is the real rawk deal and "Believe (II)" soars on her mighty metal talents.

TRACKS:

JOHN MELLENCAMP - Life, Death, Love and Freedom & Life, Death, LIVE And Freedom

DOWNLOAD

2008 - Life, Death, Love and Freedom
After Freedom’s Road, his first album in five years, John Mellencamp made it clear why he had such loyal fans. He’s made a career out of making himself vulnerable, with lyrics that undeniably come from the heart, and aided by his guitar, he generates a mood that’s more Americana melancholy than pop. After a year of being somewhat of a recluse, Mellencamp is back with 14 tracks filled with anguish, pain, resentment, and frustration. In songs like "If I Die Sudden," "Don’t Need This Body," and "Troubled Land," the singer-songwriter seems to be more like the Americana equivalent to Damien Rice rather than Bob Dylan, to whom he’s been compared to before. It’s a disc that, as my friend says, you can listen to while kicking a can and walking the streets. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Longest Days 02. My Sweet Love 03. If I Die Sudden 04. Troubled Land 05. Young Without Lovers 06. John Cockers 07. Don't Need This Body 08. A Ride Back Home 09. Without a Shot 10. Jena 11. Mean 12. County Fair 13. For the Children 14. A Brand New Song

Newly recorded live performances of key songs from Mellencamp's highly successful 2008 release Life, Death, Love and Freedom. These live versions are presented here just as they were performed: no overdubs or studio enhancements of any kind were added.

GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (2010)

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, whose sultry, bluesy pop has garnered appreciation from hard-rockers and ballad lovers alike, are like a modern-day version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a spangled mini-dress while fronting the Rolling Stones circa 'Sticky Fingers'. The proof is there for all to hear on the band's third album for Hollywood Records and marks an artistic breakthrough for a vital young band caught in the act of fulfilling its immense promise. Little wonder that Grace and her cohorts have chosen to title it, directly and emphatically, 'Grace Potter & the Nocturnals'.

Rolling Stone magazine named the band as one of the Best New Bands of 2010 and had this say about them: "rowdy blues road warriors fronted by singer-organist Potter, who learned to appreciate the wonders of acid at the tender age of 12."

LIZ MANDEVILLE GREESON - Look At Me (1996)

Born in Wisconsin, Liz Mandeville grew up with the arts. Liz’s dad played & sang folk music for his family while taking classes at the Chicago Art Institute on the GI Bill after serving in Korea. He taught his daughter to paint & to sing. His work, always art related, exposed Liz to galleries, gardens & museums. Her mother, an actress who taught, took young Liz to musicals, plays & concerts. Their Hi-Fi was always playing, sometimes Stravinsky, sometimes Johnny Cash or Hank Williams, while the family read aloud to each other. Artists & musicians were frequent guests in their home. Liz was encouraged to entertain with plays, songs or dances she’d created. She published her first story at 3 & wrote her first songs soon after. Family auto trips through the South exposed young Liz to the many flavors of Roots music from Appalachian Bluegrass to New Orleans jazz & all points in between. Her first gigs were in coffee houses playing songs she’d learned at home. Liz still plays solo gigs. She has developed a guitar style that tips its hat to her oldest influences, Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters while blending in Jazz sensibilities from Jobim to Satchmo. With a sense of humor that shines through her impassioned performance, Liz is a polished, consummate entertainer, not to be missed! - lizmandeville.com

ERIC CLAPTON - Unreleased Live Album 1986-1987

A double album was part of Eric Clapton's contract with Warner's, so it seemed a good idea to record several shows with the new band. A total of eight shows were recorded in 1986 and 1987, and a track listening was worked out for the project's potential release in late 1987. It was never released, as two studio compilations were released which covered pretty much the same material ("The Cream Of Eric Clapton" and "Crossroads"). To release a further compilation of the same tracks in the live format would have been a bad commercial move.

Compilation of various Eric Clapton concerts, most of them have Mark Knopfler on second guitar!

VARIOUS ARTISTS - 1st Zagreb International Blues Festival (2010) [PROMO CD]

A promising debut of the Zagreb (Croatia) International Blues Festival!!!

A thundering roar coming from the Greg Koch's guitar worked well with the audience to mark a hot and sensational opening of the 1st Zagreb International Blues Festival. It seems this newborn festival has all it takes to reach stardome still as an infant, being raised and pampered by the city's blues and guitar lovers. The Sax! Club was too small to host everyone thirsty of the blend of blues, jazz, country, folk and hard rock which the eclectic virtuoso Greg Koch, supported by Thomas Good (bass guitar) and Del Bennett (drums), poured in abundance. The Croatia had its proud member in Nebo & the Downstrokes, winners of this year's International Blues Challenge in Memphis whose great performance was confirmed by Koch himself. The next day he taught some of his guitar expertise to students of the Fender's guitar workshop. The place was yet another great place to be - The Hard Place. Saturday's rain threatened to wash away the organiser's sanity but the dripping audience flooded the venue and enjoyed 10 hours of blues distributed from three stages, from one of which hey received a lecture in positive attitude from Ms. Candye Kane. This blues diva with a powerful voice and striking appearance (guarded by a mean band consisting of such as Laura Chavez on guitar) proved to be a great shooter as her every aim for the centre of pleasure was a success. This charming lady sustained all life's downfalls and answered all maltreatment with song and ever more positive attitude. With the positive attitude, good vibrations and guitar she overcame her illness and with her voice and energy she lifted the Zagreb audience to their feet to dance to the rhythm of her last album Superhero for which she was a triple nominee for 2010 National Blues Foundation. She thanked the audience for supporting live performances of living performers and wished all multiple orgasms and dashed to sign CDs and chat with the fans with doctor's order to go to the inside Swamp Unit (Močvara club) for more therapeutic treatments administered by Šinobus, Dudlaš and The Shoutin' Torpedoes. No side-effects taking this treatment since the organisers shrewdly omitted the alternate current in every other performer giving ears a break listening to the acoustic bands. Here are some names you should keep your eye (and ear) on:
Acoustic: Tomislav Goluban, Two for Blues, Ivan Vragolovich and Nuna Du
Electric: Ben Dover, Dudo Vorih Blues Band, Blues of Taste, Carl Reuter & The Harpoon's and Picksiebner.

To cut a long story short, this festival is facing a bright, starry and long lasting career. - croblues.com

Arthur Bulgin, also known as Arthur Louis is a singer, songwriter and guitarist. Arthur was born in Jamaica and moved to Brooklyn when he was four years old. Traces of both roots can be found in his music; on the one hand, the laid back natural rhythm of the Caribbean, and on the other, the vibrant energy of New York.

Before leaving for another long series of concerts, Clapton went into the studio and worked on an album by Arthur Louis, a Jamaican who had moved permanently to England and was currently making a name for himself as one of the country's few genuine reggae artists. One of the songs being recorded, a reggae interpretation of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," caught Clapton's attention - so much so that he would record it as his own single a few months later, using essentially the same arrangement..

NINE BELOW ZERO - Doing Their Homework (2004)

Nine Below Zero started life in South London during 1977, in the midst of the punk rock boom in England - but their sound and inspiration were so totally counterintuitive to what was going on in punk rock that they scarcely seemed to be part of that movement, apart from their extremely energetic attack on their instruments. Rather than noise for its own sake or auto-destruction, their inspiration lay in classic Chicago blues (though John Mayall's early music and that of the Who and the Kinks from early in their careers also figured into their sound). Dennis Greaves (lead vocals, guitar), Peter Clark (bass), and Kenny Bradley (drums) - soon joined by Mark Feltham (who actually replaced a teacher of theirs who had sat in on the early gigs) on vocals and harmonica - were schoolmates and friends who shared a love of blues; all had all come into the world in the early '60s, and might well have resigned themselves to having missed the boat for the British blues revival by virtue of having been born in the midst of it. Instead, they reached back to that era and found themselves pegged as part of the "mod revival" in the midst of the punk era. Originally billed as Stan's Blues Band, they made a name for themselves locally in South London, sounding a lot like the Who from their "maximum R&B" days and the Kinks from their early days, and arrived as younger rivals to Dr. Feelgood. A couple of years later, they acquired a manager and a new name, taken from a song by Sonny Boy Williamson II, and cut a debut record on their own label. By 1980, they'd been signed to A&M Records' British division and took the bold step of making their major-label debut a live album from the Marquee Club in London -- to judge from the results, one heartily wished that some of the earlier bands that inspired them had displayed similar daring. Live at the Marquee, recorded on June 16, 1980 - by which time Stix Burkey had replaced Bradley on the drums - was a success and led to their follow-up album. For their sophomore effort, Don't Point Your Finger, they were determined to translate their live energy into the studio and turned to no less a producer than Glyn Johns, who had worked with the Rolling Stones and the Who in their respective best years. The resulting record reached number 56 on the British charts. The band's upward momentum was slowed in the years that followed, with Clark's departure (replaced by Brian Berhall), though a third album, Third Degree, followed - but it seemed as though the moment had passed, as that record never got the attention or recognition it deserved from the press or the public. Greaves' involvement with an outfit called the Truth, who coalesced as a full-time band in 1984, seemed to bring an end to Nine Below Zero, and that might have been as far as the group got. But a 1990 reunion got them playing before sell-out audiences, and the group has been working ever since, with Greaves on lead guitar and Mark Feltham even returning to the fold in 2001. ~ All Music Guide

CALVIN RUSSELL - Crossroad (2000)

Calvin Russell is the real deal, an authentic Texas-born cowboy whose face is a trail of hard-earned lines, proof of the rough mileage he's put on his body since his birth in 1948 in Austin. For someone who likes Texas and Russell's brand of country music, the act of researching his life and misadventures could be fun if it weren't for one thing: all the juicy stuff, including Russell's stint in jail, that's been printed about the singing American cowboy is in French. Sometimes it's in another European language. Far less often will you find any significant write-ups in the language of his birthplace, and that's because Russell found his greatest success, professionally and personally, far from home. He is a business owner; the proprietor of a Swiss nightclub. His wife is Swiss. A good percentage of his albums were recorded in Europe. Everybody that loves the music of Townes Van Zandt and Texas music lovers in general should buy this record, unfortunatelly only released in Europe. This is "Americana" in its best, a mix of blues, country, folk and rock, that explodes in a couple of great songs. The fact that Calvin Russell is better known in France and Germany then in Texas, is a tremendous injustice. - amazon.com

ELVIS PRESLEY - Love Me Tender (1989)

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolour 60s through the liberalising effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young adults, but Elvis attracted teenagers who had money for the first time because of the post-war economic boom. In doing so, the 'teenager' became a real concept for music-makers, a market to aim for that revolutionised the dominant style of music from the easy-listening croons of Sinatra and Bing Crosby to the new varied styles of rock'n'roll. His on-stage hip-shaking was hugely controversial among worried parents, who labelled him a danger to American society while their teenage daughters swooned at such flagrant sexuality. Meanwhile, his rockabilly musical sound borrowed liberally from the rhythm & blues style strongly associated with black American communities. Elvis' teenage fans ignored that old-fashioned concept of racially segregating musical styles, a crucial first-step towards acceptance of blacks by young white America that enabled the civil rights movement of the 60s to succeed. The teenagers who were inspired by Elvis in the 50s grew into the young adults of the liberal 60s, and the pop, rock and film stars who effected further cultural progress in that decade. More so than any other individual person, Elvis was a catalyst to the social changes that put light-years between today's broad-minded attitudes and the conservative social norms of five decades ago. - amazon.com

MAGIC SLIM - The Essential Magic Slim (2007)

Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers. It's no wonder that Magic Slim and the Teardrops, considered by many to be "the last real Chicago blues band," have become one of the busiest and best-loved blues bands around. As Blues Revue wrote, "Whoever the house band in blues heaven may be, even money says they're wearing out Magic Slim albums trying to get that Teardrops sound down cold." Slim's live performances have become legendary. Standing well over six feet, Slim cuts a commanding figure on stage, prowling the boards in his large cowboy hat, filling the room with his slash and burn guitar and booming vocals, commenting on the action throughout, slipping occasionally into a feral, Howlin' Wolf-like voice. Slim has an encyclopedic repertoire of hundreds of blues songs in his head, giving the live shows a charming impromptu quality. This essential collection spans Slim's eighteen year relationship with Blind Pig and includes his best known and most requested tunes. - amazon.com

THE DOORS - Legacy: The Absolute Best (2003)

With an intoxicating, genre-blending sound, provocative and uncompromising songs, and the mesmerizing power of singer Jim Morrison's poetry and presence, the Doors had a transformative impact not only on popular music but on popular culture. The Doors' arrival on the rock scene in 1967 marked not only the start of a string of hit singles and albums that would become stone classics, but also of something much bigger - a new and deeper relationship between creators and audience. Refusing to be mere entertainers, the Los Angeles quartet relentlessly challenged, confronted and inspired their fans, leaping headfirst into the heart of darkness while other bands warbled about peace and love. Though they've had scores of imitators, there's never been another band quite like them. And more than 40 years after their debut album, the Doors' music and legacy are more influential than ever before. - amazon.com

"Legacy: The Absolute Best" is a two-disc compilation album by The Doors released in 2003. This compilation includes the uncensored versions of both "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" (the lyrics "she gets high" are restored) and "The End" (with Morrison's liberal use of the word "fuck" during the song's interlude). Also included is an unreleased 1969 studio version of Morrison's epic stagepiece "Celebration of the Lizard" in its entirety.
