JEFF STRAHAN - Double Live At Billy's Ice (2009)

If you aren’t familiar with Jeff, he is a native of Lamesa, Texas, near Lubbock where he grew up on a diet of edgy country, blues and rock ‘n’ roll. He eventually moved in the 80’s to Austin and played a variety of genres in a variety of bands. Frustrated with the “music business” Jeff pursued a “real job” with the hope of returning to music. He was actually a successful trial lawyer in Texas for 10 years before deciding to return to music in 2000. (We lose one lawyer and gain back a great musician all at once- that’s a good day!!) He moved to Durango, Colorado to gain musical inspiration. This must have worked as Jeff delivers a killer live performance that you do not want to miss. - cdbaby.com

JOHNNY WINTER - Blues In A Box (1998)

BLUES IN A BOX is a three CD box-set. Discs 1 and 2 contain tracks from 1959 to 1969 and from 1984 to 1985. Disc 3 is a bonus live disc that contains previously unreleased tracks.Personnel includes: Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer.Liner Note Author: Bo Svensson.Uneven sound quality aside there's no denying the historical interest of these recordings. Disc One is a motherlode of rare studio and live recordings from 1959 to 1969, when Johnny Winter made the progression from a pale 16-year-old kid from Beaumont, Texas, to one of the rising stars of the American blues-rock scene. Ranging from his rockabilly-style early years to the rise of the blues-rock power trio Winter, these tracks are utterly fascinating for the hardcore Johnny Winter fan.Highlights include a manic version of "Louie Louie" that doesn't sound a thing like either the Kingsmen or Richard Berry. Disc Two consists of 1984-85 rehearsal takes, and Disc Three contains a complete live concert of more recent vintage.

BUDDY WHITTINGTON - Buddy Whittington (2007)

Born in Fort Worth, Texas on the 28th December 1956, Buddy Whittington began playing guitar at the age of eight after being inspired by his sister's records of The Beatles, Rolling Stones and, in particular, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton. By the age of 14 he was already a part of the Dallas/Fort Worth music scene and playing regularly in the clubs along Jacksboro Highway. Although he became versatile enough to be able to play anything from the country music of Bob Wills to the rhythm and blues classics of Bill Doggett to rock 'n roll, his main love was, and is to this day, the blues. During the early 80's, he formed and sang with his own group "The Sidemen" who became well known to a large audience who loved their down home grooves. In 1991, "The Sidemen" were booked at a club called Dallas Alley to open up for none other than John Mayall. Apparently John was impressed enough to keep in touch and, when Coco Montoya left the Bluesbreakers in 1993, there was no doubt in John's mind who to call.

Buddy's self-titled solo CD appeared in 2007, and has garnered very favorable reviews and considerable airplay. The CD, recorded at Hurricane Sound in Garland, Texas by engineer / producer / drummer / 'ubertalentedmultiinstrumentalist' Mike Gage, features performances by Gage, longtime bassist Wayne Six, co-guitarist Michael 'Mouse' Mayes, and this configuration makes up the core of the current working band. 'We can play just about anything we need to between us, as we have all 'played in different bands together' for years, and really enjoy working with each other.' says Bud, who is currently writing songs for his second solo outing.

CHRIS FARLOWE - Out Of Time: The Immediate Anthology (1999)

Chris Farlowe is an English pop, R&B and soul singer. He is best known for his hit single "Out of Time", which rose to #1 in the UK in 1966, and his association with Colosseum and The Thunderbirds. As an English R&B star of the early 1960s, Farlowe released the single "Stormy Monday Blues" under the pseudonym Little Joe Cook, which helped perpetuate the myth that he was black. Farlowe's musical career began with a skiffle group, The John Henry Skiffle Group in 1957, before he joined The Johnny Burns Rhythm and Blues Quartet, in 1958. He met guitarist Bob Taylor in 1959 and through Taylor joined The Thunderbirds, who went onto record five singles for the Columbia label. Farlowe moved to Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label and recorded eleven singles, five of which were cover versions of Rolling Stones songs including ("Paint It, Black", "Think", "Ride On, Baby", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Out of Time"). Farlowe's single "Out of Time" reached #1 (1966) in the UK Singles Chart. He recorded four more singles, the best known of which is Mike d'Abo"'s Handbags and Gladrags". Farlowe sang vocals for the theme music written by Greenslade for the BBC TV series Gangsters. He began an association with the jazz rock group Colosseum in the 1970s, recording a live album and three studio albums including, Daughter of Time (1970). Later in the next millennium he would appear on two more Colosseum albums . In 1972 he joined Atomic Rooster and is featured on the albums Made in England (1972) and Nice 'n' Greasy (1973). He also sang on three tracks from Jimmy Page's Death Wish II soundtrack (1982), as well as the tracks "Hummingbird", "Prison Blues" and "Blues Anthem" on Page's album Outrider. - wikipedia

BEE GEES - Their Greatest Hits: The Record (2001)

As any '60s pop aficionado worth his/her salt can tell you, the oft-overlooked Bee Gees were musical visionaries on a par with the Beatles, but until the 2001 arrival of this two-disc anthology, their legacy has been ill-treated. Short of buying the box set, previous hits collections made you choose between the brothers Gibb's early pop-rock period and their subsequent reincarnation as R&B/disco gods. THE RECORD, which devotes a generously proportioned disc to each of these eras, shows that the Bee Gees' work in both was equally impressive. From the quirky, death-obsessed, but endlessly melodic invention of such '60s gems as "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," and "I Started a Joke," to the delicious falsetto-enlivened faux Philly Soul of "Too Much Heaven" and "Fanny," to infectious dance classics "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever," the band stands tall. Their limitless melodic imagination, distinctive three-part harmonies, and consistency of vision mark them as one of the greatest pop outfits of the 20th century, and THEIR GREATEST HITS is far and away the definitive Bee Gees collection.

Out of print in the U.S.! Most excellent two CD set from the Brothers Gibb featuring 40 tracks that span their entire career from the '60s straight up to the millennium. Features hits like 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart', 'Stayin' Alive', 'Jive Talkin'', 'I Started A Joke', 'You Win Again', 'Nights On Broadway' and many others. - cduniverse.com

SHAKURA S'AIDA - Brown Sugar (2010)

Ruf Records announces the signing of one of the hottest names in Canada's blues scene, singer Shakura S'Aida and the release of her label debut CD, "Brown Sugar", on April in the U.S. and Canada. "Brown Sugar" was produced and engineered by celebrated producer Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, Steve Miller) at Bessie Blue Studios in Tennessee, not far from the Tennessee River. Of the album's dozen tracks, 10 are originals co-written by S'Aida and her guitarist Donna Grantis - a dramatic departure from her 2006 CD, Blueprint, on which she only wrote two of the tracks. The rest of the players on the recording are Lance Anderson on organ, Rick Steff on keyboards, Steve Potts on drums and Dave Smith on bass. "Brown Sugar" showcases S'Aida's powerful, smoldering vocal style, which has made her an international favorite on the club and festival circuit throughout the world. Her dynamic stage presence never fails to ignite the crowds that experience her power-packed delivery in-person. Shakura S'Aida was born in Brooklyn, raised in Switzerland, and has been based in Toronto for many years. Also an accomplished actress and voice-over specialist, she's appeared in a number of stage productions, television series and films. - antimusic.com

CARRIE SMITH - Confessin' The Blues (1993)

A blues belter in the classic tradition, Carrie Smith was born August 25, 1941, in Fort Gaines, GA. Despite making her debut at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival while a member of a New Jersey church choir, she did not truly emerge on the jazz circuit until the early '70s, in the company of Big "Tiny" Little. In November of 1974, Smith's riveting performance as Bessie Smith (no relation) in Dick Hyman's Carnegie Hall production of Satchmo Remembered brought her fame throughout the international musical community. Soon, she began touring as a solo act, and in a short time began recording as well; still, despite subsequent performances in conjunction with the New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Tyree Glenn, and the World's Greatest Jazz Band, Smith remained little more than a cult figure in the U.S., proving better received in Europe. While rooted firmly in the blues and gospel, she was a singer of considerable range and depth, as recordings like 1976's Do Your Duty and the following year's When You're Down and Out prove; despite never earning significant success, she remained an active figure both on-stage and in the studio through the 1990s. ~ All Music Guide

MARIE KNIGHT - Let Us Get Together (2007)

Marie Knight began singing at the Oakwood Baptist Church in Newark, NJ and made some early gospel singles for Brunswick and Mercury. Starting in 1952 she gained international fame as the duet partner of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She continued recording gospel and secular music in the '60s, '70s and '80s. In 2003, MC Records recruited her to sing on A Tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Shout Sister Shout. Her performance was so powerful, the label offered her a contract, and this album, her first full-length in 20 years, is the happy result. Reverend Gary Davis was discovered by folkies in the '60s and celebrated as one of the last living links between ragtime, blues and gospel music. His syncopated picking style made him an acoustic guitar legend and several of his compositions, including "Samson and Delilah" and "I'll Fly Away," became folk "hits." Davis died in 1972 and is today largely unknown, even in folk circles. Hopefully, this album will bring his music back into the spotlight. Knight, not unexpectedly, concentrates on Davis' gospel tunes, and infuses them with a sanctified power. She's lost a bit of her high end over the years, but her fervent delivery remains undiminished, polished by the experience she brings to her renditions. Super picker Larry Campbell produces and backs Knight with a credible version of Davis' syncopated and highly rhythmic style of guitar picking. "When I Die," a celebration of eternal salvation, bounces brightly along with Campbell's chiming guitar and Lincoln Schleifer's bass adding to Knight's blazing rendition. "Death Don't Have No Mercy" gets a swampy blues drenched reading with Campbell playing Pops Staples-style electric guitar and Kim Wilson blowing some fine harp. Knight shines throughout, bringing the spirit of Davis to life with performances full of her ardent, funky, playful soul. ~ All Music Guide

V.A. - Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye: A Tribute To Roky Erickson (1990)

WHERE THE PYRAMID MEETS THE EYE is a tribute album to Roky Erikson, lead singer/songwriter for 60's pyschedelic band The 13th Floor Elevators. Roky Erickson often seems to be better known in rock circles for his well publicized psychological maladies and his less-than-gentle treatment at the hands of Texas' judicial system than for his music - and that's a shame. While Roky's habit of informing anyone who asks that he's a Martian or is in contact with Satan makes for good fanzine copy, the best reason to be interested in Erickson is his songwriting - there's a graceful, vivid surrealism to his lyrical style that's endured far better than most of the noodlers who came out of the psychedelic rock movement, and his later bursts of horror film fancy conjure up a troubling tension that's laughed at only by the shallow or ignorant. When Erickson's legal problems came to a head in the late 1980s, longtime fan and Sire Records executive Bill Bentley assembled Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson to raise money for Erickson, as well as drawing attention to the unique beauty of his music. Like most multi-artist tribute albums, the results are a bit uneven; some of these artists seem to have appeared out of convenience rather than any great love of Roky's music, and a few of the interpretations are simple miscalculations (Thin White Rope's Guy Kyser really goes overboard on his version of "Burn the Flames"). But there are a several moments of very real beauty and power here, especially from the artists who share Erickson's Texas heritage -- Doug Sahm and ZZ Top rock out on their contributions, the Butthole Surfers' version of "Earthquake" is one of their finest moments on wax, and T-Bone Burnett's take on "Nothing in Return" is a heart-ting gem. The 13th Floor Elevators' first two albums are still the best place to sample Erickson's music (and the latter-day All That May Do My Rhyme is a fine album, for which Erickson actually receives royalties - hint, hint), but Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye is a sincere if inconsistent tribute to his work, and shows how well his songs can translate to the styles of other artists. ~ cduniverse.com

BILLY COX & BUDDY MILES - The Band Of Gypsys Return (2006)

During his brief yet legendary career, the albums released during Jimi Hendrix's lifetime could be broken down into two categories -- psychedelic hard rock and funk/soul rock. The latter style could be pinpointed to the 1970 release Band of Gypsys, a live recording which saw Hendrix hook up with old pals Billy Cox (guitar) and Buddy Miles (drums), and shy away from the pyrotechnics of his early days in favor of heavy jamming. Thirty-six years after the release of the Band of Gypsys' lone album comes a follow-up, Band of Gypsys Return, on which Hendrix's shoes are filled by such players as Eric Gales, Kid Rock's Kenny Olson, and Guitar World Magazine's Andy Aledort, among others. Comprised of both studio and live recordings, several Hendrix classics are revisited, as well as a pair of tunes penned by Cox for Jimmy Stewart (aka Buzzard), who was a musical influence on Hendrix and Cox (according to Cox's liner notes). For the most part, the renditions of the Hendrix classics follow the original versions closely -- especially Aledort's fine job of re-creating the long-and-winding solos of "Machine Gun," as well as Olson tackling "Stone Free." But elsewhere, tracks like "Manic Depression" get a significant overhauling, and the two aforementioned Stewart tribute tracks, "You've Got the Best in Town" and "Let Your Word Be Your Bond" fit in well. As evidenced by Band of Gypsys Return, Cox and Miles still make up one hell of a rhythm section. ~ All Music Guide

LUCINDA WILLIAMS - The last two albums (2007/08)

2007 - "West"
Though the arrangements stray from Lucinda Williams's motherlode blend of blues, country, and folk, West may well be her best album. It is easily her most musically adventurous, and often her most lyrically inspired. Williams's singing has never sounded better, from the aching tenderness of "Where Is My Love?" to the ravaged catharsis of "Unsuffer Me." New York producer Hal Willner, who has worked with artists such as Marianne Faithful and Lou Reed, enlists the support of eclectic progressives like guitarist Bill Frisell, keyboardist Bob Burger, and violinist Jenny Scheinman, along with harmonies from the Jayhawks' Gary Louris, to weave a subtly rich sonic tapestry. Much of the material was inspired by the death of Williams's beloved mother ("Mama You Sweet," "Fancy Funeral") and the bitter breakup of a relationship (the jagged-edged emasculation of "Come On," the repetitive incantation of "Wrap My Head Around That"), though "Are You Alright?," "Learning How to Live," and "Everything Has Changed" could reflect the aftermath of both. Other highlights include "Rescue," with a languid subtlety and ambient pulse reminiscent of Beth Orton, and the dreamy, wistful title track. Where Williams's music has long cut close to the bone, the best of West slices right through it. - amazon.com
TRACKS: 01. Are You Alright? 02. Mama You Sweet 03. Learning How To Live 04. Fancy Funeral 05. Unsuffer Me 06. Everything Has Changed 07. Come On 08. Where Is My Love? 09. Rescue 10. What If 11. Wrap My Head Around That 12. Words 13. West MULTIDOWNLOAD

2008 - "Little Honey"
Lucinda Williams does anguish so well it’s easy to forget that Happy Woman Blues is not just the title of her 1980 album, but also the way she thinks of herself. That identity comes across full force in Little Honey, the follow-up to 2007’s heavily brooding West, where her melancholy voice seemed to creak with sadness. Here, a full-throated Williams revels in the rejuvenation of her engagement to her manager/co-producer Tom Overby, over whom she’s positively giddy on "Real Love." Her newfound bliss opens the floodgates to a musical revival, as well, since Little Honey, her ninth studio album, ranks as one of her most diverse, ranging from pounding rock ‘n’ roll (the raw sex of the title track) to the Hank Williams-ish country blues of "Well, Well, Well," to "Knowing"'s ‘60s soul. But some of the finest writing appears on "Plan to Marry," as thoughtful a meditation on love as any time-honored sonnet. Just when Williams seems to have run the gamut, she pulls out a Stones-y (via Louisiana) cover of AC/DC’s "It’s a Long Way to the Top" as the punctuation mark. It all makes for a rollicking ride with one of roots-rock's most unpredictable and passionate artists. - amazon.com

JUNE CARTER CASH - Keep On The Sunny Side: Her Life In Music (2005)

This two disc set is exactly what the title says, June Carter Cash - her life in music. As part of the Carter Family, she was onstage performing by the time she was 10 years old. This is a fairly comprehensive look at June Carter Cash's talents as a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and of course comedienne. For any fan of the old time country music, this album is a must have for your collection. There are some really great songs in this collection. You will find "Keep on the Sunny Side" three times on this album. The first is a version with a small June singing with the original Carter Family. Then, there is the version once June was married to Johnny Cash and he joins the Carter Family singing the song. Finally, the album concludes with the version June recorded for her last solo album, 'Wildwood Flower.' "He's Solid Gone" was another song as sung by the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle. "Juke Box Blues" was a single from June's first solo album in 1952. "Song to John" will bring tears to your eyes. Another tear-jerker is the duet with Johnny Cash, "Far Side Banks of Jordan." It talks about their deep love for each other and if one should die before the other, they will be waiting on the other side for their true love. - countrymusic.about.com

DONNA THE BUFFALO - Live From The American Ballroom (2001)

Donna the Buffalo--hard to categorize, but easy to love - are meant to be heard live. The six-member group thrives on jams and grooves, blending, bending, and veering from Appalachian country to Cajun, reggae, zydeco, folk, and roots rock often in the same song (check out the nearly 13-minute "Conscious Evolution"). Frequently compared to the Grateful Dead, DTB evoke Jerry Garcia and pals, both musically and with their rabid, nomadic fan base (the Herd). But in mixing tribal celebration with spiritual, social, and political issues, the band, which travels the country in a 1960 tour bus, recalls so many other hippie-era ensembles that this two-CD 2001 concert recording might as well have been cut at the Fillmore in '68. Jeb Puryear's electric guitar hearkens, at times, to the plaintive scorching of Big Brother & the Holding Company, and yet the group also knows the importance of melody, as on "Family Picture," where Tara Nevins anchors the lyrics and rides them over a driving beat and a riff so infectious you'll be reaching for the repeat button. Two discs might be stretching things a bit, but put on a tie-dyed T-shirt and light up a smoke, and you'll be clamoring for space on that bus. - amazon.com

Sue Foley's debut album, "Young Girl Blues", is an impressive effort. Not only is Foley a wild, adventurous guitarist, she can write songs that don't merely rehash standard blue clichés. Her songs have an intense passion that is heightened by her array of gutsy guitar textures, which are rooted in blues tradition but never tied down to it. ~ All Music Guide MULTIDOWNLOAD

DION - Bronx In Blue (2006)

The one-time doo-wop and rock-&-roll star Dion DiMucci has proved to be one of the most enduring of the genre's original pioneers, surviving numerous shifts in musical fashion over a career that has spanned six decades. "Bronx In Blue" is an all-acoustic blues outing highlighting the music that first inspired Dion as a child growing up in the Bronx. With songs by Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Jimmy Reed, the collection is a soulful tour de force for Dion, not only in his familiar role as a magnificently interpretive vocalist but, also, as a brilliantly innovative guitarist.

Dion notes, "When I was a kid, there was no Rock & Roll. In the early 50’s – late at night, I’d tune into Wheeling, West Virginia (WWVA), listening to the Blues – Howlin’ Wolf’s ‘How Many More Years,’ Jimmy Reed’s ‘Bright Lights, Big City.’ After school, I’d run home to catch the last half hour of the ‘Don Larkin Country Show’ coming out of Newark. I was a Hank Williams junkie; for me, putting country and blues together – that’s what I call Rock & Roll."

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD - Buffalo Springfield Box Set (2001)

"Buffalo Springfield Box Set" is a career retrospective of the late 60s folk rock band of the same name, released in 2001. Band member Neil Young assembled the tracks in chronological order to show how the band evolved and disintegrated in the span of two years. Of the four CDs, the first three represent the actual box set while the fourth CD contains the band's first two albums. It reached #194 on Billboard's Top 200 Album chart, and stayed on the chart for the single week. The set omits the stereo version of the Buffalo Springfield album, the mono version of Buffalo Springfield Again, the album version of "On The Way Home", "Pretty Girl Why", and "Four Days Gone" from Last Time Around, and the songs "Carefree Country Day" and "In The Hour Of Not Quite Rain" from Last Time Around. It also lacks the long version of "Bluebird", only ever issued on a 2-LP compilation. - wikipedia

JAMES WHILD LEA - Therapy (2009)

A brand new album of self-penned songs from Jim Whild Lea, legendary bassist and songwriter for Slade, one of the most popular and influential groups in pop history. Jim's immense skill as a songwriter is evident throughout, alongside his much overlooked musicianship. Also incuded is a bonus disc recorded live at the Robin R&B Club in 2002, featuring versions of Slade hits Cum On Feel The Noize and Mamma We're All Crazee Now alongside classic tracks such as Hey Joe, I Am The Walrus, You Really Got Me, Substitute and Wild Thing. - amazon.com

"Therapy" is Jim Lea’s first solo album since the early 90s, the man who was responsible for penning Slade’s hits back in the day, old enough to be your dad, but that is not immediately obvious from listening to the record. Wonderfully crafted songs, it is an album in the true sense. On "Therapy", James Whild Lea showcases his song-writing ability, by penning the kind of songs which are quite simply really well written. In a world of mediocre songwriters pushing albums on more style than substance this record harks back to the Paul McCartneys of song-writing, welding effective melodies to imaginative arrangements, and it is quite simply a joy.

As Blogcritic Josh Hathaway writes in the liner notes, 'Privileged represents a change in direction but not inspiration. Before Nick met Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Dawkins and Lurrie Bell, he met their musical offspring in the form of Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers, Free, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Cream and other legends who drew their inspiration from Mississippi's Delta and the immortal treasures that sprang from his beloved nearby Chicago.' Moss has written some of the finest songs of his career, and by stretching beyond the traditional blues idiom, he has expanded his sound without losing his identity. - amazon.com

ALEX CHILTON - 19 Years: A Collection of Alex Chilton (1991)

William Alexander "Alex" Chilton (1950 – 2010) was an American songwriter, guitarist, singer and producer best known for his work with the pop-music bands the Box Tops and Big Star. Chilton's early commercial sales success in the 1960s as a teen vocalist for the Box Tops was not repeated in later years with Big Star and in his indie music solo career on small labels, but he did draw a loyal following in the indie and alternative music fields.

For more than thirty year, Alex Chilton has made a lasting influence through Alternative rock with his work with the Box Tops, Big Star, and as a solo artist. With the 1991 compilation album 19 Years: A Collection of Alex Chilton, Chilton shows 19 years of his best work from Big Star and as a solo artist. The album starts with the fun and catchy country stylings track of Free Again which was made shortly after Chilton left the Box Tops. The next five tracks on the album are from the third album by Big Star. Big Star was a band formed by Chilton and singer/songwriter Chris Bell where they would record two albums that would make them cult faves. Bell left the band after the second album and Chilton and drummer Jody Stephens carried on as Big Star for a third album. Selections from the third album include the fun pop-rock tracks of You Can't Have Me and Kizza Me. Another cool selection from that album is the nice acoustic ballad of Nighttime and the two haunting ballads that were covered by the 4AD project This Mortal Coil, Kangaroo and Holocaust both filled with psychedelic and country musical stylings.

RORY BLOCK

Aurora "Rory" Block has staked her claim to be one of America's top acoustic blues women, an interpreter of the great Delta blues singers, a slide guitarist par excellence, and also a talented songwriter on her own account. Born and raised in Manhattan by a family that had bohemian leanings, she spent her formative years hanging out with musicians like Peter Rowan, John Sebastian, and Geoff Muldaur, who hung out in her father's sandal shop, before picking up the guitar at the age of ten. Her record debut came two years later, backing her father on The Elektra String Band Project, a concept album. She met guitarist Stefan Grossman, who, like her, was in love with the blues. The pair would often travel to the Bronx to visit Reverend Gary Davis, one of the greatest living bluesmen. At the tender age of 15 Block left home, hitting the road in true '60s fashion and traveling through the South, where she learned her blues trade at the feet of Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt, her greatest influence, before ending up in Berkeley. It was there that she developed her slide technique (she uses a socket wrench as her slide), but she didn't record until 1975, when she released I'm in Love (a compilation of earlier material, The Early Tapes 1975-1976, appeared later). After two records for Chrysalis, she recorded the instructional How to Play Blues Guitar for Grossman's Kicking Mule label, and later moved to then-fledgling Rounder, with whom she enjoyed an ongoing relationship. She toured constantly, often playing as many as 250 dates in a year, which kept her away from her family -- she'd married and begun having children in the early '70s - but developed her reputation as a strong, vibrant live performer, and one of the best players of old country blues in America.

In 1988 the best of Block's Rounder cuts were compiled on Best Blues & Originals, which, as it said, featured her interpretations of blues classics and some of her own material. Two of the tracks, released as singles in Belgium and Holland, became gold record hits. In addition to her regular albums, Block made a series of instructional records and videos, as well as a children's record, Color Me Wild. Although she had been performing for a long time, the plaudits didn't really begin until 1992, when she won a NAIRD Award for Ain't I a Woman, a feat repeated in 1994 and 1997. In 1996 she began winning W.C. Handy Awards, first for Best Traditional Album (When a Woman Gets the Blues), and in 1997 and 1998 for Best Traditional Blues Female Artist. In 1997 she was elected to the CAMA Hall of Fame, and in 1999 she received yet another Handy Award, for Best Acoustic Blues Album (Confessions of a Blues Singer). Block continued to tour, although not as heavily as in earlier times, and she's often accompanied by her grown son Jordan Block, who also plays on her albums. She remained busy in the early part of the 2000s, releasing six albums, including a live recording. 2005's From the Dust drew raving critical reviews, as did 2006's The Lady and Mr. Johnson, an album that sees Block taking on select songs of her musical hero, idol, and biggest influence, Robert Johnson. A digital video disc, The Guitar Artistry of Rory Block, was issued in 2008. ~ All Music Guide

ALAN VEGA, ALEX CHILTON & BEN VAUGHN - Cubist Blues (1996)

In 1996, the fine Thirsty Ear label -- never motivated by commerce, always driven by the need to issue what was new, odd, and fresh, even if it is that rare freakish and fractured thing -- released Cubist Blues. It was the unholy union of future roots music wailer Alan Vega with a pair of terminal rock & roll outsiders in Ben Vaughn and Alex Chilton. Since almost everybody else in the indie and pop worlds were still wandering around in shock after the death of Kurt Cobain, almost no one took notice of this terrifyingly great record made in two consecutive dusk-to-dawn improvisational sessions at Dessau Studios on the Lower East Side of New York in December of 1994! Like the best of jazz when the cats in the '50s would just show up to see what would happen (more often than not, it did: check the Norman Granz Jam Session albums and the Prestige All-Stars). In any case, this set is now a double-disc which includes the studio album and a "Live at the Transmuicales" version in France made a few days later. What does it sound like? Crazy voodoo ghost music. It sounds like Eddie Cochrane, Gene Vincent, and Johnny Burnette fighting for a place at Elvis' table someplace between heaven and hell that isn't earth. Vega's a poet of the other side of rock & roll. In the grain of his voice is the cry, weep, and wail of the blues as it met speed, cars, rocket ships, and the inside of Papa Legba's drum. Forget for one moment he was in Suicide, if you can, and listen to these freaky, screwed-down guitars, ramshackle pianos bearing their low keys like a dog's teeth, basses that rumble instead of pop. It's messed up -- check tracks like "Fly Away," where Jim Morrison meets Jeffrey Lee Pierce in the rebel squall of the south wind; the steam-shovel rockabilly of "Fat City" that is as streetwise as any hip-hop crew's boast shop, or creates a roaring sound Dion would have loved to have heard in his head in the Bronx in the '50s. It is poetry, man. There's the noir-ish blues of "Sister" that stumbles, falls, and breaks its leg before it ever starts, and the post-nightmare retake on "Dream Baby," where nothing is as it seems in the mirror. The live disc howls even more primitively, with the crew trying to force the audience through the eye of the space needle with them. Brilliant, disturbing, obsessive, and addictive; Cubist Blues, - All Music Guide

BIG STAR - Keep An Eye On The Sky (2009)

Big Star is an American rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1971 by Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel. KEEP AN EYE ON THE SKY spans 1968 to 1975 and the collection uncovers a trove of unreleased demos, unused mixes, alternate versions of songs, and a 1973 concert recorded in Memphis. The lavish packaging includes extensive liner notes, rare and never-before-seen photos, and insightful essays about the cult of Big Star and the band's history. Spotlighting the band's roots, the box set opens with several songs recorded before Big Star formed, including 'Try Again,' one of the first songs Bell and Chilton wrote together. Big Star inspired a fevered allegiance among fans of power pop, giving rise to a cult of believers who spent decades spreading the gospel. Their enthusiasm turned this obscure Memphis pop band-one that got little airplay, sold few records, and only played a handful of times-into a remarkable rock and roll resurrection story. Big Star's trek from obscure Memphis band to standard bearers for an entire genre of music has never been fully mapped-until now.

Keep An Eye On The Sky is a four-CD collection that shows why Big Star influenced REM, The Replacements, Cheap Trick, the dBs and dozens more. Power pop doesn't get more powerful (nor as poppy) than this. Included are rarities, unreleased demos, unused mixes and a 1973 concert recorded in Memphis (the band's home base). There's even a track called Country Morn, which was originally issued as a flexi-disc(!) on Big Star's fanzine. Too cool. Pick it up for the music fan on your list. And why not treat yourself, too? Discover why Big Star deserved to be really big stars!

If you like blues and funky soul-jazz (with just a twist of the future), this is an album to enjoy. Hammond B-3 artist Ron Levy gathers some of the greatest groove players of all time for this steam session, including Melvin Sparks on guitar and the great Idris Muhammad on drums. Call it retro or acid-jazz if you want, but groove lover Levy never stops playing that funky soul-jazz long enough to look back. This album carries the groove tradition on, maintaining that integrity. Those who look for B-3 jams in the soul-jazz vein that are as funky as can be will not be disappointed. This is a great CD to own. - All Music Guide

V.A. - The Blues Roots Of The Rolling Stones (2008)

The Rolling Stones are notable in modern popular music for assimilating various musical genres into their recording and performance, ultimately making the styles their very own. The band's career is marked by a continual reference and reliance on musical styles like American blues, country, folk, reggae, dance; world music exemplified by the Master Musicians of Jajouka; as well as traditional English styles that use stringed instrumentation like harps. The band cut their musical teeth by covering early rock and roll and blues songs, and have never stopped playing live or recording cover songs.

DR. JOHN - The Anthology (2006)

Here is yet another reissue of Dr. John material from the late '60s and early '70s, some of it apocryphal in origin, some of it showing up on his early recordings. This batch, from the Master Classics label, has a few things going for it over the other various versions of the music circulating out there. For starters, it has liner notes approaching some sense of coherence. Nothing exhaustive, mind you, or even lengthy, but it's a bio essay that actually addresses some of the tracks. Next, the package is very nice looking in its gold embossed digipack. And there are a full 20 cuts here — most collections of this material only feature ten to 12. Finally, and most important, is the sound. These cuts have all been digitally remastered and sound better than ever. Some of the true classics here — in terms of well-known tunes — are "Mama Roux," "Wash Mama Wash," "Tipitina," and "What Comes Around (Goes Around)." Less well known but no less engaging are "Woman Is the Root of All Evil," Roy Byrd's "Bald Head," "Just Like a Mirror," and "Bring Your Love." For the price, this comp can't be beat.

TRACKS:
01. In The Night 02. Tipitina 03. Woman Is The Root Of All Evil 04. Mean Cheatin' Woman 05. Bald Head 06. Qualified 07. Just Like A Mirror 08. Wash, Mama, Wash 09. What Comes Around (Goes Around) 10. On March 5-7, 1971, the one and only Queen of Soul headlined Bill Graham's world-famous rock venue Fillmore West. FREE - Songs Of Yesterday (2000)

SONGS OF YESTERDAY features five discs worth of Free tracks originally recorded between 1968 and 1972. The release contains 80 tracks in all and includes many rarities featuring Paul Kossoff, Paul Rogers, Simon Kirke, and John "Rabbit" Bundrick. It's strange that a band with a song as immediate as "All Right Now" is a bit of an acquired taste, but it's the truth. Free was a powerful, majestic hard rock band at their peak, but they were also a little obtuse; a lot of their power came from their playing, and their songwriting was epic, but often elliptical. As such, they're for hard rock connoisseurs -- a band who gained a spirited, dedicated following largely because they took devotion to unlock their treasures, especially in the years following their breakup. For those fans, the five-disc Songs of Yesterday is a godsend. This is not a box for listeners with less than a consuming interest in the band (even if you think you want total immersion in Free, this will not be as effective as purchasing each of their albums) since this contains a wealth of unreleased material. Very few of the tracks are actual album tracks, most are alternate mixes or alternate versions, plus there are a lot of live tracks in the mix, as well. As long as you know what you're getting into, this isn't bad, especially since it refurbishes the band's canon for the dedicated, giving them fresh insights to familiar songs (even if the new mixes aren't necessarily better than the originals they just sound a bit brighter and more modern). For anyone else, it's a bit much, and it doesn't quite tell the story in the right fashion, since it really offers a mirror image, alternate version rather than the real thing. ~ cduniverse.com

SCORPIONS - Sting In The Tail (2010)

"Sting in the Tail" is the Scorpions' 17th and final studio album, set to release in North America on March 23. The album - recorded in Hannover, Germany with co-producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen - goes back to the band's party anthem roots, in contrast to their previous 2007 politically-driven concept album 'Humanity - Hour 1.' Track highlights include new anthem single 'Raised on Rock,' the reverbed gutiar-driven title track and the duet-highlighted 'The Good Die Young,' featuring vocals by Finnish symphonic singer-songwriter Tarja Turunen. Although we are sad to hear that "Sting in the Tail" will be Scorpions' last album, lead vocalist Kalus Meine optomistically adds: "We want to end the Scorpions' extraordinary career on a high note. We are extremely gracious for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we've always had since the beginning." And there's no slowing down in the midst of their finale: To coincide with their final release, the band will embark on a three-year mammoth tour, debuting in May, which will take the band across five continents - starting with Europe in the band's home country Germany, followed by North America in June...

JOE BONAMASSA - Black Rock (2010)

Just awarded the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the UK's prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards, blues-rock guitar hero and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa is set to release his tenth full-length solo album, BLACK ROCK. This album was recorded at, and named for, Black Rock Studios in Santorini, Greece. With this album, we wanted to explore a world feeling, and this was the inspiration behind going to record in Greece and using some of the best Greek musicians to add a little flavor to a couple of the tracks. But it s by no means a world album. We wanted Joe s usual youthful and energetic tones to play alongside the worldly vibes of the Greek bouzouki and clarino, said producer Kevin Shirley. Bonamassa says, It was the kind of record Kevin and I wanted to make. We needed to rock again a bit like on my first album. I wrote the whole thing there. Also Joe signed up Blues legend B.B. King for a duet on his new album. The song they perform together is a rendition of the Willie Nelson-penned song, Night Life, which appeared on King s 1967 album BLUES IS KING. Shirley says about the experience, This is a rollicking Stonesy-vibe version of the Willie Nelson song on which B.B. King duets with Joe, both vocally and on his famous Lucille guitar. What a joy and an honor to work with the legend who is possibly the pivot point and unifying musician between Blues and Rock. Other tracks appearing on BLACK ROCK include Jeff Beck s Spanish Boots, Leonard Cohen s poetic Bird On A Wire, Otis Rush's Three Times A Fool, Bobby Parker's Steal Your Heart Away, Blind Boy Fuller's Baby, You Gotta Change Your Mind, John Hiatt's I Know A Place, and James Clark's Look Over Yonders Wall, as well as the originals When The Fire Hits The Sea, Quarryman's Lament, Wandering Earth, Athens To Athens and Blue and Evil. - amazon.com

THE CHIEFTAINS featuring RY COODER - San Patricio (2010)

The musical souls of two nations, Ireland and Mexico, are movingly brought to life in San Patricio, the latest international collaboration by six-time Grammy winners The Chieftains - the leading practitioners of Irish traditional music for the past four decades. The album features multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Ry Cooder, another multiple-Grammy winner, who co-produced with The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney. It tells the nearly forgotten story of the brave San Patricio battalion - a downtrodden group of Irish immigrant conscripts who deserted the U.S. Army in 1846 to fight on the Mexican side against the invading Yankees in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). - amazon.com

The Chieftains have enjoyed an extraordinary career for the best part of five decades, partly because of adventurous, high-profile projects like this. They have matched their rousing Irish traditional playing with styles from across the world, recording with Spanish musicians, Chinese folk bands or country, bluegrass and rock celebrities from Alison Krauss to Van Morrison or the Rolling Stones. Now comes arguably their most original album, an Irish-Latin concept piece that involves an impressive array of Mexican musicians and a handful of Americans, including Ry Cooder, who co-produced this intriguingly varied set with the Chieftains' Paddy Moloney. It tells the story of the San Patricio (Spanish for St Patrick) Battalion of Irishmen who fled to America to escape the potato famine, were conscripted into the American army, but found themselves fighting against fellow Catholics in the Mexican-American War – and so changed sides to fight for the Mexicans. The music blends Irish uilleann pipes, whistle and fiddles with Mexican guitars, banjo and trumpets, and the cast of singers ranges from Lila Downs and Linda Ronstadt to the extraordinary, passionate 90-year-old ranchero star, Chavela Vargas. Then there's moody guitar instrumental work and a fine, sturdy ballad (in English) from Cooder. Grammy nominations are a certainty.

PETER FRAMPTON - Shine On - A Collection (1992)

Peter Frampton is a British musician, best known today for his multi-platinum selling solo work in the mid-1970s when he was an “arena rocker”. He originally became famous, however, as a young member of psychedelic era band The Herd and became a teen idol in Britain. Steve Marriott reportedly wanted to bring the 18 year old Frampton into the Small Faces lineup but when rebuffed, started Humble Pie with Frampton instead. After touring the US and Europe for two years, he left Humble Pie as the group was gaining popularity because of disdain for Marriott’s hard living lifestyle and screaming boogie rock direction. Aside from his work with Humble Pie, other recordings of this era that feature Frampton include albums by Harry Nilsson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and George Harrison. His solo debut was 1972’s Wind Of Change, which did not fare well on the charts, and neither did two more efforts, one under the moniker Frampton’s Camel. Constant touring though began to create awareness of his talents and 1974’s Frampton LP went gold. He gained lasting international fame by 1976 when his much-loved live album, Frampton Comes Alive! was released. Having built up his reputation on the road, the LP debuted at No. 1 on the charts in January 1976. It was long considered the best-selling live album of all time, moving over 16 million copies worldwide.

THE INFORMANTS - Crime Scene Queen... (2009)

Crime Scene Queen from The Informants, has a rich, flavorful 1950s style. Rock-a-billy, jump blues and swing the way they were meant to be done. The CD looks like an old vinyl record and the twelve tracks are divided into "Side A" and "Side B." Thankfully we don;t have to flip the disc over, but this is just one of the least important details that show you where, or really, when the band was aiming. The album was produced, mixed and mastered by Jeremy Lawton, one of the best studio guys in the region. Anchored by Kerry Pastine's sexy vocals, the whole band is so talented it almost hurts. Certainly one of the most talented acts in the region. There are eleven original tracks and one cover, "Please Mr. Jailer," by Wynona Carr, that fits right in the the originals. The title track "Crime Scene Queen" has just the right mix of excitement, in your face rebellion and cool. "Get Twisted" sounds just right for a sock hop. "Salvation" is a kind of gospel blues with a cool backing vocal chorus. "Marilon" has a cajun/New Orleans feel, probably due to the squeeze box. "Don't Talk Betty" rocks a little faster and is perfect for swing dancing. Overall, this album is a delightful blend of retro influences and top quality performances combined into a well produced package that everyone can enjoy.

ZOLA MOON - Wildcats Under My Skin (2007)

Female blues singer and songwriter Zola Moon was born in San Jose, CA, but her powerful song stylings might mislead listeners to guess that she was raised in the Deep South of Louisiana or Mississippi on grounds better known for producing great blues artists. She is self-taught, though she does mention numerous musical influences, ranging from B. B. King and Muddy Waters to Hank Williams and Tina Turner. Even with all of those wonderful influences, Zola Moon has worked hard to keep her sound all her own. Zola Moon began her career in blues about 1983, in the San Francisco area. After seven years of performing, which helped her grow a large fan base, she finally released a debut album in 1990. It was titled Dangerous Love and recorded under the BareMoon Records label. Five years later, and with a new label, she finished work on an enjoyable sophomore offering, Lost in the Blues. It was followed in 1998 by Almost Crazy and then in 2000 by Earthquakes, Thunder, and Smiling Lighting. Some of the original blues tunes fans can sample on Zola Moon's albums are "Doll House," "Lucky Me," "I Look at the Fool," "Imagination," "Alley Cat," "Hollywood to the Hood," and "I Don't Think So." Over the years Zola Moon has performed at concerts, festivals, and nightclubs, appearing with many artists, including Etta James, Junior Wells, Al Kooper, Albert Collins, and Elvin Bishop. Her band consists of longtime drummer Jerry Olson, guitarist Vince "the Silver Fox" Joy, and bassist Ron Battle. ~ All Music Guide

SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN - Valley Of Fire (2008)

Southern Gentlemen's 2008 CD "Valley of Fire" features the same lineup as the band's previous release "Third Time Is The Charm." Vocalist Eric Johns, bassist Dave Swart and drummer Mike Haid join guitarist David T. Chastain. Southern Gentlemen's sound has been described by critics as Rock, Metal, Blues, 80s, 70s, Hard Rock and everything in between. "Valley of Fire" continues the band's mission of incorporating Hard Rock, Blues and Metal into the Southern Gentlemen Sound. A sound that is growing in acceptance and appreciation for its uniqueness in today's scene. The band continued its style of keeping the recording as "bare bones" and "live" sounding as possible. The Cd was mixed and mastered by engineer extraordinaire Christian Schmid in Germany. "Valley of Fire" is definitely the band's heaviest to date with a few tracks "flirting" with traditional metal more so than any of the band's previous 3 Cds.

ARC ANGELS

The release of the ARC Angels' self-titled debut album in 1992 signaled a promising rebirth for some of Texas' most talented musicians. Singer/guitarist Charlie Sexton, a child prodigy who had released his major-label debut album in 1985 when he was still in his teens, had been the unwilling recipient of a ridiculously overinflated hype campaign by his label that led to an equally vicious backlash, both of which had seemingly all but ended his career. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton had, of course, made up Double Trouble, the stellar backing band that played with legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan until his tragic death in a helicopter crash in 1990, which left both musicians seriously traumatized. As for singer/guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, he was, like Sexton, another former child prodigy who had been kicking around Texas music scene for a while but had only recently been able to interest people in his music. When the four musicians joined forces as ARC Angels (named after the Austin Rehearsal Complex, where they started playing together), their resulting album, produced by Little Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen's band, showed considerable potential. Sales were decent and the band embarked on a tour that showed that they weren't a contrived supergroup—they were a real band that worked together. Unfortunately, the tour would also lead to the dissolution of the band. Bramhall and Sexton, the band's talented but stubborn leaders, butted heads constantly over every decision. Even worse, Bramhall later admitted that he had become increasingly ensnared in a nasty heroin addiction which the other band members wanted nothing to do with. By the time the tour ended in 1993, the ARC Angels were finished with each other, and the band members went their separate ways.

That's not the end of the story, however. As the years passed, the scars from the band's acrimonious end slowly healed. Bramhall kicked drugs and he and Sexton gradually began to work together again in various combinations with Shannon and Layton. Finally, in 2004, the band reunited for a series of one-off concerts around Austin, deciding in 2005 that the time had come for an official reunion. ARC Angels: Living in a Dream is the result.

ERIC CLAPTON & FRIENDS - Strictly The Blues (2000)

A bunch of early Eric Clapton recordings are circulated endlessly through budget-line collections, primarily consisting of live Yardbirds cuts and a live 1965 jam session credited to the Immediate All-Stars and featuring Jimmy Page, Bill Wyman, Mick Jagger, and Ian Stewart. These show up again on Strictly the Blues, along with three tracks he cut with John Mayall (none from the Bluesbreakers album) and a handful of cuts that Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page did with the Immediate All-Stars (separately, not together), and the difference here is that this is not a budget-line release; everything is presented coherently and with annotation and pretty good sound. So for hardcore Clapton fans who have to hear everything he did, this is the choice among the plethora of comps to get this early, mildly interesting marginalia. ~ All Music Guide

Toshi Reagon was born in Atlanta, grew up in Washington, D.C., and has been living in Brooklyn, NY, for the past 20 years. Her parents were part of the Freedom Singers, who fought for Civil Rights in the '60s. Her mother was also a founding member of Sweet Honey in the Rock. Her music is powerfully soulful and clearly rooted in folk, gospel and the blues. Her presence on stage is electrifying and unignorable, and it's no wonder—she's been performing for much of her life. Reagon dropped out of college when she was invited to open for Lenny Kravitz on tour. Since then, she's performed with everyone from Pete Seeger to Chaka Kahn, Dar Williams, Elvis Costello, and Ani DiFranco. She's also worked on several projects with her mother and Sweet Honey In the Rock.

INDIGO GIRLS - 4.5 - The Best of the Indigo Girls (1995)

The Indigo Girls are Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, the folk rock singer-songwriters who got together in 1980. They are known for their socially and politically conscious lyrics. Ray and Saliers met at while they were at high school and have been playing together since the early 80s, originally as the B-Band and then the Indigo Girls. After a couple of low key releases, they came to the attention of Epic records, who signed them up. Their self-titled debut for Epic made the Top 30, and they earned the Best Folk Recording Grammy for “Closer to Fine”. The same year, they lost out to Milli Vanilli for the Best New Artist title. They received Grammy nominations for their next two albums, and their subsequent releases have sold well, with Become You considered a fan favourite.

4.5 is a 15-track import collection covering the Indigo Girls' career from their self-titled Epic Records debut to Swamp Ophelia. While it certainly does the job of introducing the band to the foreign market, its lack of rarities and prohibitive import price make it unnecessary for the U.S. - the self-titled album is still the best place to start. ~ All Music Guide

ANNI PIPER - Chasin' Tail (2010)

Anni Piper began playing electric guitar at 12 years old, but became a devoted musician when she was given her first bass at age 14. She quickly discovered an affinity with the instrument, preferring to lay down a groove rather than scream out a solo. Anni’s musical ability and strong focus led her to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Contemporary Music) at Southern Cross University, Lismore NSW, at only 19 years of age. Piper's latest album is a bold departure from her earlier work. From the first bars of 'Amazon', a nod to SRV's 'Scuttlebuttin', there's clearly a new energy and passion from her virtuosic backing band. This allows Piper's musicianship and skills as a vocalist, bassist and composer to shine. From the funky slapping and popping on 'Dreamcatcher', 70s-rock inspired classic riffs on 'Highway Time' (her sardonic tribute to life on the road), and the driving rhythms of 'The Whistleblower', Piper fulfils the promise she displayed in her earlier recordings. Inspired by the blues rock idols she enjoyed in her youth, she states 'this is the album I always wanted to make'.

SUNNY AND HER JOY BOYS - Introducing Sunny and Her Joy Boys (2009)

This is a completely delightful disc, one that celebrates the Great American Songbook without adding any heavy interpretive or historical baggage to it. The arrangements are interesting: the project was put together by the legendary guitarist Duke Robillard, and he leads a quartet that also features guitarist Paul Kolesnikow, bassist Jesse Williams, and the brilliant clarinetist Billy Novick. All of the instruments are acoustic and the guitarists tend to play with an on-the-beat rhythmic chop that lends the whole proceedings a faint flavor of the Hot Club of Paris, while at the same time evoking the Freddie Green-era Duke Ellington band -- especially when one or more of the guitarists plays single-note horn lines in harmony with Novick's clarinet. But while all of this fun stuff is happening in the background, the focus is on Sunny Crownover's sweetly pure voice. On songs like "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)," and a very gently torchy "That's My Desire," her voice is a thing of crystalline beauty even as she sings with the kind of straightforward simplicity that keeps the focus on the song itself -- an exceptionally rare trait in a jazz singer. She's a bit less convincing in blues mode; her rendition of "Today I Sing the Blues" is just a bit too nice and doesn't communicate much of the song's intensity. But it's still a very pleasant performance and does nothing to detract from the overall brilliance of this gem of an album. ~ cduniverse.com

JOHN HIATT - The Open Road (2010)

John Hiatt's music has frequently had issues of family at or near the core. That's true of his latest album, but the perspective reaches beyond primary relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, to take on bigger questions of heritage and legacy. That's a big chunk to bite off, but as one of rock's most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years, Hiatt brings considerable insight and his characteristic wry humor to the task. At 57, Hiatt doesn't have much time for boy-meets/loses-girl scenarios. He's sharing the explorations of a man recognizing his weaknesses ("Like a Freight Train") and acknowledging his debt to those who've come before ("Homeland") on the way to discovering his core values ("Go Down Swingin' "). Not that he bypasses the four-letter word that is "love." In "What Kind of Man," as he's been throughout his estimable career, he's far more interested in plumbing his own nefarious attitudes than finding someone else on whom to affix blame for his troubles: "You see the man who loves you/You see the man you love/But I have hidden claws/Inside these gloves." This bluesy, heartland-soaked musical excursion features meaty support from guitarist Doug Lancio, bassist Patrick O' Hearn and drummer Kenneth Blevins, wittily informed nods to such influences as Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones and Willie Dixon and plenty of the rock soulfulness that's integral to the sound he's been honing for decades. - latimesblogs.latimes.com

IAN TYSON - All The Good 'uns (1996)

Half of the early-'60s folk group Ian & Sylvia, Ian Tyson retreated from performing and recording after the duo disbanded in the mid-'70s to become a rancher in the foothills of Southern Alberta, Canada. He quietly returned to music-making in the 1980s, releasing a series of albums that focused on detailed songs about the concerns of the working cowboy. Tyson was born in Victoria, British Columbia. As a child he was involved in rodeo, not music -- he didn't learn to play the guitar until he was recovering from rodeo-related injuries. In the late '50s, he began performing as a folk singer. In 1961, he met singer/songwriter Sylvia Fricker and the two musicians began performing together; they also married three years later. Ian & Sylvia and their band, Great Speckled Bird, became popular on the folk scene and released their self-titled debut album in 1962. In 1963, they released Four Strong Winds; the title track, written by Tyson, became a folk standard. Ian & Sylvia successfully recorded together through the mid-'70s. The duo also began hosting a television show, Nashville North, which became the Ian Tyson Show when the couple split up in the middle of the decade...... - All Music Guide

INGA RUMPF - The Best Of All My Years So Far... (1997)

Inga Rumpf is one of the best-known German R&B singers. Her voice often drew comparisons to Janis Joplin, but Inga Rumpf was able to develop her own unique vocal style. Catapulted to stardom in the ‘70s with her band Frumpy, she released a number of highly acclaimed solo works in the ‘80s and ‘90s and has now to be regarded as the grand old lady of R&B made in Germany. Whereas other German female vocalists such as Nina Hagen faded away over time, she consequently followed her path and never compromised herself artistically (unlike her ex-bandmate Udo Lindenberg whose creativity died down by the end of the ‘80s and who now outputs nothing more than lightweight pop).

Born on Aug. 2nd, 1946 in Hamburg (Germany), Inga Rumpf started performing as a teenager with different blues bands in the Hamburg entertainment district of St. Pauli. In 1965, she founded the folk band City Preachers and recorded three albums with them. After a creative crisis in 1969, the band changed styles from folk to a mix of beat and soul. A new line-up reflected this: Jean-Jacques Kravetz (keyb), Karl-Heinz Schott (b) and Udo Lindenberg (dr) formed the core of the new band which one year later was to become Frumpy when Udo Lindenberg left to start a solo career and was replaced by Carsten Bohn. Frumpy recorded only two albums, All Will Be Changed (1970) and Frumpy 2 (1971) -- the latter containing the hit single How The Gipsy Was Born -- but these two LPs rewrote German rock history. The band was praised as the best German rock act, and Inga Rumpf was declared to be the greatest individual vocal talent of the German rock scene so far....~ All Music Guide

It's easy to read Hurricane Katrina metaphors into everything New Orleans musicians record, but that tragedy runs deep through this set of understated piano-based songs by Crescent City's long-reigning queen of soul. Take "Cold Rain": On the surface, it's a spare, jazzy ballad about a doomed relationship, but when Thomas sings, "Here it comes/No place to run/Nowhere to hide/From this cold rain," her husky voice effectively transforms those simple lyrics into a haunting lament for a city she loved and lost. Piano greats, old and young — Ellis Marsalis, Dr. John, Henry Butler, Randy Newman, John Medeski, Norah Jones — accompany Thomas on these all-acoustic tracks, accentuating the forceful gospel of John Fogerty's "River Is Waiting" and Thomas' sublime take on the Dinah Washington staple "This Bitter Earth." The practice of presenting legends in the raw has become predictable ever since Rick Rubin revived the late Johnny Cash's career, but aside from a few slight missteps here — a bland Burt Bacharach number ("What Can I Do") and a tune that comes off like quiet storm unpled ("Overrated") — Thomas' versions of these stark, powerful tunes help Simply Grand live up to its title. - rollingstone.com

ALBERT COLLINS - Live At Montreux 1992 (2008)

01. Iceman
02. Honey Hush
03. Lights Are on (But Nobody's Home)
04. If You Love Me Like You Say
05. Too Many Dirty Dishes
06. Put The Shoe On The Other Foot
07. Frosty

Albert Collins was an electric blues guitarist and singer (and occasional harmonica player) whose recording career began in the 1960s in Houston and whose fame eventually took him to stages across the U.S.A., Europe, Japan and Australia. He had many nicknames, such as "The Ice Man", "The Master of the Telecaster" and "The Razor Blade". The Iceman is in remarkable form on this 1992 live date, offering proof positive that his smoldering Texas-style electric blues is ageless. With a set list that spans from his early hit "Frosty" to tracks from his 1991 release, ICEMAN, Albert Collins's stinging technique makes his Telecaster sing out over his no-holds-barred full electric band. A deeply satisfying blues excursion, LIVE AT MONTREAUX was recorded merely a year before Collins's death from cancer, making it a fitting tribute as well as a fine concert recording.

2010 release from the legendary Rock guitarist containing 12 previously unreleased studio recordings. Ten of these recordings were made between February and May 1969 as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create their sequel to the groundbreaking 1968 double album Electric Ladyland. Features 'Valleys Of Neptune,' one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix's commercially unavailable recordings. Includes exciting 1969 arrangements of classic signature songs 'Red House', 'Fire' and 'Stone Free'. Also includes unheard studio versions of Hendrix's inspired interpretations of 'Bleeding Heart' by Elmore James and Cream's 'Sunshine Of Your Love'. Mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix's albums throughout the guitarist's lifetime. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott - the team behind all of the acclaimed Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD releases since 1996.

01. Stone Free

The original 1966 recording by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience is best known as one of Jimi’s signature songs. The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) featured a new remake by the original group. Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Billy Cox recorded this version in May 1969. It is a different recording entirely.
02. Valleys Of Neptune
This track was recorded in September, 1969, and May, 1970. This full-band version has never been released. An extract of a demo Hendrix made of this song -- featuring just Mitchell on drums and percussionist Juma Sultan -- was part of the short-lived Reprise/Polydor album Lifelines, which was in the marketplace between 1990 to 1992.
03. Bleeding Heart
This cover of the classic blues song by Elmore James is different entirely from the versions featured on South Saturn Delta and (originally) on War Heroes. This recording has never been issued and features Jimi, Billy Cox, and drummer Rocky Isaac. It was recorded in April, 1969.
04. Hear My Train A Comin'
This electric, full-band version is different from the famous 12-string acoustic version that was featured in the 1973 documentary Jimi Hendrix and subsequently on the album Jimi Hendrix: Blues.
05. Mr. Bad Luck
Like “Valleys of Neptune”, a different version of this song was part of Lifelines in (1990). Jimi would later develop this song as “Look Over Yonder,” issued as part of South Saturn Delta.
06. Sunshine Of Your Love
A stage favorite for the group during the 1969 period which has never been released.
07. Lover Man
Jimi recorded many different arrangements of this song, including the versions on both the Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) and South Saturn Delta. This is an entirely different recording made in February, 1969.
08. Ships Passing In The Night
A never-before-released track taken from the last recording session by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience on 4/14/69.
09. Fire
10. Red House

Both of these songs by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience were recorded at the same February, 1969, session. They feature the expanded stage arrangements Jimi had developed and are not alternate takes of the original 1967 recordings.
11. Lullaby For The Summer
12. Crying Blue Rain

These April, 1969, recordings by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience have never been released.

CAROLYN WONDERLAND - Bloodless Revolution (2003)

Not since the mid-Eighties when local singer Karen Kraft made critics' hair stand on end and then gargled "Stormy Weather" on Letterman has a set of pipes as big as Carolyn Wonderland's let loose here. Wonderland's voice is as muscular as her name is evocative, and after collecting nearly every award the Houston music scene has to offer, she's released her first solo album in Austin. Produced by Stephen Doster, Bloodless Revolution strives to demonstrate Wonderland's stylistic and songwriting diversity and succeeds without question. Wonderland does rock ("Driving Into the Sun"), ballads ("Unbroken"), jazz ("Homelessness in Austin"), country ("This Land"), and gawd, can she sing gut-wrenching blues ("Judgement Day Blues"). So why does Bloodless Revolution feel like an audition? Her compositions likewise run the gamut and are musically and lyrically solid ("Annie's Scarlet Letter," "From a Waffle Booth Six"). Wonderland's voice is at its absolute best paired with another, as on "He Said, She Said" playing Merry Clayton to bandmate Scott Daniels' Mick Jagger. Yet Bloodless Revolution never really comes together. Perhaps it's just the effect of trying to cultivate a wildflower in a hothouse, but Wonderland's growth doesn't seem anywhere near complete. One of these days very soon, Carolyn Wonderland will totally deliver, and we'll all be standing with our hair on end. - austinchronicle.com

JOHN HIATT - Crossing Muddy Waters (2000)

Hiatt retrenched and recorded his first drummer-less, predominantly acoustic record for Vanguard. It's a sympathetic match and a smart move, since the company has a long, rich history working in the unpled medium before it became trendy. The result is the most natural and relaxed John Hiatt album in years, and a welcome addition to his extensive catalog. With just a duo of acoustic multi-instrumentalists, Davey Faragher and David Immergluck (both longtime associates), Hiatt pulls out some of the most earnest, down-to-earth songs of his career. He sings like a man rejuvenated, totally at ease with his surroundings, and plays with the laid-back, homespun honesty that has infused his best work. Although some comical lyrical touches remain, the majority of the album is a sober reflection on lost love ("What Do We Do Now," the title track) and the resulting psychological scars. Hiatt's voice has never sounded better; its coarse edges sometimes straining for high notes works perfectly with this craggy, unpolished music. The mandolin is the most distinctive instrument here, and its brittle, trebly, crisp tone gives the disc an underlying tension, especially on the ballads that comprise the majority of the album. Heart-rending, sincere, stripped down yet multi-faceted, John Hiatt has taken a step forward by taking a small step back. Although not quite in a class with career highlights like Bring the Family or Slow Turning, Crossing Muddy Waters is a subtle treat and an album whose watercolor brush strokes paint a vibrant picture of stirring delicacy. ~ All Music Guide

LILA DOWNS - Una Sangre (One Blood) (2004)

There’s no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Frida and on the accompanying soundtrack, which led to a performance at the 2003 Academy Awards. The dividing lines between cultures and classes are major themes throughout the Mexican-American singer's decade-long career; but whereas 2001’s Border is more angry about the disparities, One Blood: Una Sangre is more inclusive, if only for the hopeful note of unity sounded in the English-language version of the title cut (the album has two distinctly different readings of the song sung, respectively, in English and Spanish). While much of the cumbia-based, genre-breaking material here is original, Downs and her band completely revamp two covers: Ritchie Valens classic "La Bamba" features techno beats and African drumming; the folk song "La Cucaracha" opens with wailing guitar before settling into a gentle reggae groove. Stylistically restless and lyrically didactic, One Blood: Una Sangre is as ambitious as it is beautiful. - amazon.com
