MICHELLE WILLSON - Tryin' To Make A Little Love (1999)

Having previously established herself as a jump-blues chanteuse, Willson mixes the jaunty fanfares and talk-song sass of her native New England blues scene with the greasy syncopation of a New Orleans rhythm section for a "Roomful of Meters" hybrid on her third Bullseye release. Her bright, brassy vocals lack the subtlety to explore the emotional crevices of midtempo ballads from ace tunesmiths like Dan Penn and Doc Pomus, but her clarion lower register transforms "Someday" (by David Hidalgo and Louie Perez of Los Lobos) into a riveting gospel torch song. Good-time renditions of hard-luck narratives remain Willson's forte, however: when she's telling tales like "Half Past the Blues" and "In the Driver's Seat," her blue-collar panache encompasses both the campy theatrics of Bette Midler and the soulful integrity of Bonnie Raitt. - amazon.com

TAIL DRAGGER - Live At Rooster's Lounge (2009)

As a rule, blues artists seldom follow up a live album with another live album; there are usually some studio albums between their live albums (assuming they aren't recording studio albums exclusively). But Tail Dragger is an exception. The Arkansas native/Chicago resident's 2005 recording, My Head Is Bald: Live at Vern's Friendly Lounge, received such a favorable response that Delmark made his next release, Live at Rooster's Lounge, another live album. Recorded in a Chicago club in 2009, this 68-minute CD is every bit as engaging as My Head Is Bald. Live at Rooster's Lounge isn't engaging because Tail Dragger does anything groundbreaking; greatly influenced by Howlin' Wolf (and, to a lesser degree, Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters), Tail Dragger is unapologetically derivative. But he's derivative in the best sense of the word. Tail Dragger obviously lives and breathes the blues, and anyone who has a strong passion for the electric Chicago blues of the late '40s, '50s, and '60s couldn't help but be captivated by his inspired performances of original material as well as versions of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Keep It to Yourself," two Howlin' Wolf songs ("Louise" and "Ooh Baby, Hold Me"), and two Little Walter songs ("Blues with a Feeling" and "Everything Gonna Be Alright"). A lot of people who promote blues recordings or blues concerts have been much too quick to toss the term "low-down" around, but in the case of Tail Dragger, "low-down" really is applicable; throughout Live at Rooster's Lounge, he oozes grit and rawness - the sort of grit and rawness that so often characterized the Chess Records aesthetic in Chicago after WWII. Live at Rooster's Lounge is a consistently strong document of Tail Dragger on-stage.- All Music Guide

EDIE BRICKELL - Volcano (2003)

Most women sign up for university classes once they get the kids off to school. But not Edie Brickell. The quirky singer who led the Texas-based roots rock titans the New Bohemians to chart glory in 1990 with the slacker anthem "What I Am" is making another run at the charts with her first solo album in almost a decade. Married to Paul Simon for the past nine years, Brickell thankfully wasn't watching soap operas while raising her three children. Instead, she diligently studied acoustic guitar with Howard Morgen, penned more than a dozen new songs in the past two years, and then called up her Texas crony Charlie Sexton to produce her first album since her inconsistent, yet lyrically beautiful, Picture Perfect Morning back in 1994. Less frenetic and verbose than the stuff she did with the Bohemians, Volcano finds the singer collecting small, seemingly mundane moments and elevating them to a folksy profundity as she weaves her tales of restless, ill-starred, but proud women. The title track seethes with restlessness, and is underpinned with a gothic tension that recalls the young Bobbie Gentry on her smash hit "Ode to Billie Joe." Equally chilling, and just as poignant, is her sad tale of love and abandonment on "What Would You Do," showing Brickell's growing narrative talents. When she's not spinning her disturbing tales, Brickell is the consummate chanteuse as she recounts her courtship to Simon on the breathy and seductive "Once In A Blue Moon," or fogs up the windows in "More than Friends"--the thinking women's love song.

SHERYL CROW - Tuesday Night Music Club: Deluxe Edition (2009)

Tuesday Night Music Club is the debut album from American singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow, released in August 3, 1993. The lead single "Run, Baby, Run" was not particularly successful. However, the album gained attention after the success of the third single, "All I Wanna Do," based on the Wyn Cooper poem "Fun" and co-written by David Baerwald, Bill Bottrell, Sheryl Crow, and Kevin Gilbert. The single eventually reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, propelling the album to number three in the US Billboard 200 album charts, selling over 5.3 million units there as of January 2008. On the UK Album Chart, Tuesday Night Music Club reached #8. It is listed as one of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Before she became the omnipresent babe at grizzled-rock-star reunions, Sheryl Crow was a Missouri gal with a big voice, a mutable country-rock countenance and a lust for pop hooks. The loping "Leaving Las Vegas" launched her eclectic Grammy-sweeping 1993 debut, which also had L.A. folk funk, piano-bar blues, even a Dylan-cum-R.E.M. "rap" ("The Na-Na Song"). The bonus disc doesn't exhume her never-released 1992 album, but it has worthy takes on Eric Carmen's 1975 power ballad "All by Myself" and Led Zep's "D'yer Mak'er" — bold strokes from a singer swingin' for the bleachers.

ELTON JOHN - Rare Masters (1992)

In addition to the expected b-sides and previously unreleased outtakes, "Rare Masters" is notable for including in its entirely the soundtrack John and Bernie Taupin wrote in the late-'60s for the British movie "Friends". The soundtrack songs are early, unpolished John, but among them is the touching buddy song "Friends," (not the Bette Midler-popularized Buzzy Linhart composition) a minor hit in 1971. Among the many surprises elsewhere on "Rare Masters" is "Rock Me When He's Gone," a gospelly number from 1971 whose raw, stripped-down production emphasizes a feeling that the much better-known "Border Song" only hinted at. A nearly 9-minute-long alternate version of "Madman Across The Water" is similarly raw, and highlights its bluesy lead guitar in a way that John rarely did in those early days. You also get John blasting through the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" with John Lennon. - cduniverse.com

JOHN LENNON - The John Lennon Collection (1989)

This 15-song collection (expanded to 19 in 1989 for the CD), released just short of two years after Lennon's death, provided a very generous overview of his solo career on a single LP, drawing on most of the major singles and also on songs that were widely covered, and from all periods of his career, from his late-Beatles-era solo political explorations up to the release of Double Fantasy. The producers, obviously working in collaboration with his widow and seeking to put the very best face on his career, and showcase his strongest and most memorable songs, pass right over Sometime in New York and much of the partly successful works that followed, which is sort of a shame - "Woman Is the Nigger of the World" may not quite rate alongside the stuff that is here, but it was a song that he did care about and played live more than once (significant in a career that included barely any scheduled concerts), and "John Sinclair" showed him playing blues with a ferocious passion. One also misses "Cold Turkey," which is as powerful a song as he wrote in his early solo career, but at the time of its release this was the broadest overview of Lennon's career to be found, and even included (on its CD version) the otherwise unanthologized B-side "Move Over Ms. L." - All Music Guide

Three Dog Night are a rock band formed in late 60's by vocalists Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells. This didn't work out and they changed their name, added some musicians and became Three Dog Night. The band hit the ground running, releasing three albums in 1969, their debut Three Dog Night made it to the Billboard top 20, helped by the single "Try a Little Tenderness". They would go on to become one of the most successful bands of the early 70's with gold selling albums and a string of top 40 single hits including; "Mama Told Me Not To Come" written by Randy Newman and "One" by Harry Nilsson. The song "Easy To Be Hard" which appears on the 1969 Suitable For Framing album, was in the musical Hair and went on to be a gold selling single for them. 06. ...Intro To Rita...
07. Straight Brother

BONUS TRACKS:
12. Welcome To Hollywood
13. Death Of The Flowers
14. Icicle Star Tree
15. Mr. Henri The Clown
16. Soul Food

Of all Russell's early work as an artist, this record is perhaps the least essential; in particular, songs like "Tryin' to Stay Live" and "When You Wish Upon a Fag" feel dated. Nevertheless, Asylum Choir II is still a pretty nice record. Especially noteworthy is Russell's own version of "Hello, Little Friend"; Joe Cocker would later record the definitive version of the song. STUDEBAKER JOHN & THE HAWKS - Rockin' The Blues '85' (1992)

Taking his stage name from an automobile he once owned, Studebaker John Grimaldi was a product of the vibrant blues scene of Chicago's West Side. Born November 5, 1952, his father was himself an amateur musician, and as a youngster, Grimaldi began playing the many instruments lying about the house. Becoming a fixture at the open-air flea markets in the Maxwell Street area - a venue for countless blues buskers - he began focusing on harmonica after catching performances from the likes of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson; after taking in a Hound Dog Taylor club date, Grimaldi also turned to guitar. He formed the blues-rock band the Hawks during the early '70s as a showcase for his reedy vocals, primal harp sound, and blistering slide guitar skills, and in the years to follow also developed into a fine songwriter. While keeping his day job as a construction worker, Grimaldi began recording during the mid-'80s, issuing a live Netherlands set later re-released domestically as Rockin' the Blues '85. His next major release was 1994's Too Tough, followed in 1995 by Outside Lookin' In. He maintained a prolific recording schedule in the years to come, issuing Tremoluxe in 1996 and Time Will Tell in 1997. ~ All Music Guide

JASON & THE SCORCHERS - Midnight Roads & Stages Seen (1998)

Jason & the Scorchers, originally Jason & the Nashville Scorchers, were a Rock / Country rock band formed in 1981 and led by singer/songwriter Jason Ringenberg. With a sound that straddles hard rock, punk rock and country music, Jason and the Scorchers are noted for their energetic live performances, and have earned strong reviews from critics: Mark Deming, who declared they "blazed a trail for the cowpunk and alt-country movements that followed in their wake." Jason and the Scorchers continue to maintain a loyal cult following around the world. Jason and the Scorchers are releasing their new album "Halcyon Times" in February 2010. The new CD can be purchased on the band's official website and at their live concerts. - wikipedia

As Rudyard Kipling says, "He who rides the tiger finds it difficult to dismount," screams Jason Ringenberg as the band rips into "Self Sabotage," the first cut on a two-disc that captures this seminal band live in concert. Over the next 23 tracks, the Scorcher prove they're still on the beast's back, digging their spurs in its sides. Too country for punk, too punk for country, Jason & the Scorchers were stomping their dusty cowboy boots at a breakneck pace long before Uncle Tupelo discovered the Carter Family. With their brand of Rolling Stones meet Johnny Cash hard rock, the Scorchers kicked out the jams for most of the 80's to a largely indifferent audience. But anyone who happened to catch a live show was a fan for life. For this concert, Jason and band dig deep into the songbook, playing tunes they've never played live ("Somewhere Within"), tunes they haven't played in years ("Ocean of Doubt" - featuring BR5-49's Donnie Herron) and classic Scorcher cuts ("Gypsy," "Broken Whiskey Glass"). And best of all, a sizzling cover of Dylan's "Absolutely Sweet Marie." An essential document of a overlooked band. - amazon.com

MARQUISE KNOX - Man Child (2009)

Man Child is the title of Marquise Knox's national debut, and for good reason. Yes, he was just 16 years old when he made this recording, but no, this is not another of those guitar-hero, someday - my - vocals - may - mature, I - might - one - day - write - my - own - material records. This kid is flat-out for real! This is a man-sized offering of serious, mature blues. In fact, it's the maturity that provides the shock value here. Sixteen years old ?! Listen to that voice and you'll swear he's lying about his age. The guitar licks are tasty and restrained with none of this hyper-active, self-absorbed speed metal that somehow gets confused with the blues. Marquise has already won the approval of B.B. King, Henry Townsend, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Big George Brock, Bob Margolis, Sam Lay .... Read those names again. Do you really think we're talking about a novelty act here? And he's an original. All but one of the tracks on Man Child were penned by Marquise, and most of them were written in the studio, on-the-fly, a skill he learned at least partially by one of Marquise's main heroes, Henry Townsend. This is a 16-year-old, inner-city kid who somehow has decided to become a dead-serious bluesman of the old-school variety. That just doesn't happen anymore. - amazon.com

GIL SCOTT - HERON - I'm New Here (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Gil Scott-Heron is an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1970s and early 1980s work as a spoken word soul performer and his collaborative work with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably "Pieces of a Man" and "Winter in America" in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron's recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". On his influence, Allmusic wrote "Scott-Heron's unique proto-rap style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists" - wikipedia

Gil Scott-Heron is one of the most influential and important singer/songwriters to have come out of America in the second half of the last century. Much can be said about why this Gil's lyrics are so original and powerful but ,it is important not to overlook his utterly singular voice which is so distinctive and rough and tender. It is a voice of experience. A new record from Gil Scott-Heron, forty years after his first solo album, is a cause for major celebration and something that the world needs now more than ever. - amazon.com

"I’m New Here" is a shock. It’s a wallop filled with big nasty beats, a wide range of sonic atmospheres, and more — sometimes unintentional - autobiographical intimacy than we’ve heard from Gil Scott - Heron than ever before. Produced by XL Recordings head Richard Russell, "I’m New Here" is his first record in 16 years. It is a scant 28 minutes and doesn’t need to be a second longer. It’s unlike anything he’s previously recorded, though there is metaphoric precedence in his earliest, largely spoken-word, albums. Its production pushes forcefully at the margins and Scott-Heron embraces it without a hint of nostalgia. - allmusic.com

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - The Fine Print: A Collection Of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008 (2009)

Drive-By Truckers (DBT) have been making music together for 13 years resulting in 7 critically acclaimed studio albums which could not contain all of the songs written by the band. DBT recently dug into the New West Records vaults and put finishing touches on a selection of songs that were never quite completed. The result of the collaboration is The Fine Print (A Collection Of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008), a 12-track album of previously unreleased and rare songs. The Fine Print features songs written by band members past and present, including Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell. 7 of the twelve songs come from The Dirty South era...a highly creative time for DBT. The record also contains four covers including Rebels by Tom Petty, which the band recorded originally for the TV show King Of The Hill and Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan which provided Shonna Tucker with her first ever lead vocal performance on a DBT recording.

RANDY BACHMAN - Any Road (1992)

Randy Bachman, prairie legend, writer and co-writer of some of the finest music Canada has put on the map now for four-plus decades, came out with this excellent CD in the early 90s, years after leaving Bachman-Turner Overdrive and before the REAL Guess Who would reunite. This album is full of great surprises, including one tune written by his son and future star Tal Bachman (who's just released his second album, by the way). This stuff is easily up there with BTO's best including the single Prairie Town, done as a straight-out rocker with a guest appearance from Neil Young, and as a ballad with Cowboy Junkies singer Margo Timmins. The rest of it is meat-and-potatoes rock & rool like "Underworked and Overpaid", the title track, and many other tracks. Enjoyable from start to finish. While Randy may not have a voice like his partners Messrs. Cummings or Turner, it suits the material just fine. Bachman has the chops and the ability to turn out stuff that just feels right the first time you hear it...one listen to this CD and you'll know why he's been around as long as he has. This is convertible-top-down, pedal-to-the-metal, takin'-care-of-business (sorry, couldn't resist) Canadian rock and roll the way it should be from one of its true masters. Don't pass this one by! - amazon.com

PETER GABRIEL - Scratch My Back: Special Edition (2010)

Peter Gabriel s Scratch My Back album project is the first part of a series of song exchanges in which Gabriel and other leading artists reinterpret each other s songs. To help craft his recording of the album s eclectic array of cult favorites and classic tracks, Gabriel enlisted former Durutti Column member John Metcalfe, composer, arranger and the expertise of producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd s The Wall , Lou Reed s Berlin ) and engineer, mixer and producer Tchad Blake (Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits). Gabriel describes this as a very personal record with twelve songs performed only with orchestral instruments and voice. He made the choice not to include guitar or drums. The album s richly diverse sounds include the sparse romance of Lou Reed's The Power of the Heart , the powerful musical journey of David Bowie s Heroes and an epic arrangement of Arcade Fire s My Body Is A Cage. Gabriel and his collaborators recorded the album at George Martin s Air Lyndhurst Studios and the Real World Temple with further editing and mixing at his own Real Worlds Studio in Wiltshire. The Scratch My Back release is one of the most creative and engaging records from an iconic artist in a long time. The marketing focus is to penetrate Peter Gabriel s core fan base as well as fans of all genres and in all demographics given the scope of artists being covered as well as its depth of composition. - amazon.com

SHANNON CURFMAN - What You're Getting Into (2010) thumbup

Despite a couple of Top 40 hits at rock radio and reviews that favorably compared her debut, 1999's "Loud Guitars, Big Suspcions", to early-era Bonnie Raitt, erstwhile blues-rock prodigy Shannon Curfman fell off the radar for the better part of a decade, finally reemerging with her sophomore album, "Fast Lane Addiction", in 2007. Thankfully, she hasn't taken nearly so long for her third effort, the fiery What You're Getting Into. While many contemporary blues records are undermined by too-slick engineering, Curfman and co-producer Jason Miller instead opt for more lo-fi, ragged arrangements, leaving often heavy reverb in the sound mixes to add texture to Curfman's guitar licks. Though the arrangements may not be particularly innovative, cuts like "The Core" and the aggressive "Curious" include some tremendous, powerful blues structures. There's something to be said for defying convention, but Curfman's mastery of tried-and-true blues forms is impressive in its own right.

Curfman's primary selling point, though, remains her enormous, versatile voice. At turns gritty and soulful, she wails a ferocious version of Eric Clapton's "The Core" and standout original "What Would Mama Say" with conviction. She plays coy on the sex-fuelled "Heaven Is on Your Mind," and conveys some real vulnerability beneath the bluster of "All I Have." But the highlight of the set is a cover Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well." It's the album's meatiest song, and Curfman simply belts the ever-living shit out of it. Other than Beth Hart, there isn't a female rock singer working today who's better or who could equal the tour-de-force performance she gives on What You're Getting Into. When her songwriting starts to match the maturity of her phenomenal voice and her arrangements reflect the same fearlessness as her performances, Curfman could emerge as a modern blues powerhouse. Still only in her mid-20s, she's well on her way. - slantmagazine.com

CAFE R&B - Very Live (2005)

Cafe R&B is a five-piece band from the Los Angeles area consisting of female singer Roach, guitarist Byl Carruthers, keyboardists John "JT" Thomas, Harry Cohen and Stevie Utstein, bassist Bobby Pickett, and drummer Stephen Klong. Longtime music fans may remember lead singer "Roach" from her days fronting Los Angeles' "Roach and the White Boys" in the early 80s. Critics in the U.S. and Europe have compared her hard-rocking vocals to the likes of Etta James, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. HITS Magazine declared: "Imagine Etta James riding a Harley out of an active volcano, and you'll have some vague inkling as to the vocal power..." Her producer/husband, Byl Carruthers, does amazing guitar work and writes the band's original material. When not producing music, he also produces and directs television shows - his credits include "Oprah," "Spy TV," and others. He’s also known as a walking encyclopedia of the blues, and has written liner notes for several blues compilations. Cafe R&B has passion for gritty, hard-hitting early blues and R&B. For the past ten years, Cafe R&B has honed their legendary live performance skills at venues and blues clubs throughout the U.S., such as the House of Blues and "Buddy Guy's Legends," the legendary San Francisco Blues Festival in 2005, Fire on the Mountain Blues Festival in '05, 06, and '07, and the Long Beach Blues Festival, just to name a few. In Europe, they have performed at jam-packed and sold-out residences in London, Barcelona and Paris. - wikipedia

Cafe R&B are gaining a reputation as one of the greatest live bands there is. Their first two studio albums are critically acclaimed masterpieces of modern Blues, Soul, and Rock. With "Very Live" the band presents their first ever official live release. The double CD set features the incomperable vocals of 'ROACH' and her devistatingly tight band; Byl Carruthers, Stephen Klong , John Thomas, and Bobby Pickett. SANTANA – Supernatural - Legacy Edition (2010)

The Legacy Edition of Supernatural expands Santana’s blockbuster 1999 album with a full disc of bonus material, mostly unreleased cuts from the recording sessions. Many of these feature the Santana band alone, departing from the superstar-collaboration blueprint of the album and, in turn, sesting what the record could have been without the guidance of Clive Davis - namely, a perfectly fine latter-day Santana album with the group doing what they’ve always done, only without the pop songs and flair that brought them a wider audience. That pop bent is heard elsewhere on these tracks, including the unreleased Dave Matthews & Carter Beauford collaboration “Rain Down on Me,” but more evident on dance remixes of “Corazon Espinado” and “Maria Maria.” There's also bait for guitar geeks, too, in the form of unreleased solos from Santana and Clapton on “The Calling.” All of this is fairly solid stuff, particularly for those looking for more of Carlos’ peerless playing, but all of it only illustrates how well Supernatural was crafted in the first place, as none of it should have taken the place of what wound up on the album. - allmusic.com

JOHNNY CASH - American VI: Ain't No Grave (2010)

American VI: Ain't No Grave, is the sixth and final installment of Johnny Cash's critically-acclaimed American Recordings album series. As with the previous five albums in the American Recordings series, American VI was produced by Rick Rubin. American VI is deeply elegiac and spiritual, with each song its own piece of the puzzle of life's mysteries and challenges - the pursuit of salvation, the importance of friendships, the dream of peace, the power of faith, and the joys and adversities that entail simple survival. It is an achingly personal and intimate statement, as, from the end of the line, Johnny Cash looks back on a most extraordinary life. - amazon.com

JUDY COLLINS - The Very Best Of Judy Collins (2001)

Performers are known because of different qualities, like the ability to craft songs or sing with emotion. With folksingers like Judy Collins, there was never any question. In the '60s, her voice could always be counted on to amaze and astonish listeners. Collins also had the good taste to choose good songs by great writers like Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell. The only weak spot in this otherwise rosy scenario centered on occasional lapses in judgment when it came to arrangements. Early material like "Turn Turn Turn" and "Suzanne" features little more than guitar and bass backup. These cuts still sound honest and fresh. Because Collins' vocals were so commanding, though, it was also easy to add busier arrangements to good effect. One of the best cuts on this album is Ian Tyson's "Someday Soon," featuring Buddy Emmons on pedal steel and James Burton on guitar. The band lays down a perfect country western cushion for her emotive vocal and the results sound as lovely today as th...ey did 30 years ago. For every song that she nails perfectly, however, there is another one that goes just as badly astray. The slish "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," complete with flute, sounds like a bizarre companion piece to "Suzanne." The harpsichord, rock drums, and orchestra of "Both Sides Now" seems a bit overblown -- though it certainly made a big splash on the radio at the time. Many of these songs misfire due to the odd mixtures of styles, attempting to marry folk and country to pop, and add out-of-place instruments. Oddly, the pop arrangement of "Send in the Clowns" works surprisingly well because it doesn't try to mix styles. The Very Best of Judy Collins is a good overview of Collins' journey from folksinger to singer/songwriter to pop diva. - All Music Guide

The fact that he never quite broken through to stardom, except in his native England and parts of Europe, and in professional music circles, is more a result of bad timing and worse luck than any lack of talent or commitment on his part." - wikipedia

VAN MORRISON - The Philosopher's Stone (1998)

For an artist's most devout fans, a peek at the sketches can speak volumes about the final canvas, and that's the merit behind this two-CD compilation of shelf tracks and alternate takes from Van Morrison's 1971-1988 studio output. The Philosopher's Stone favors his core instincts as a blues-based writer and arranger, its 30 songs dominated by shuffles and slow-burning blues with excursions into more gospel-lined melodies and some ripe experiments in funk. Collectors will welcome pristine versions of "Crazy Jane on God," the churning "Naked in the Jungle," an ebullient "Madame Joy," and several pieces exploring extended falsetto vocals, including "Twilight Zone" and "Try for Sleep," the latter being one of four tracks featuring Mark Isham on trumpet. New versions of "Real Real Gone" and "Wonderful Remark," however, confirm the wisdom of the artist's original release choices. It's a more-than-welcome blast from the past: 30 outtakes and first drafts (26 of them previously unheard) from 1971 to '88, when the R&B shouter-cum-Celtic seer could summon magic with a single growl. There are a few false starts and toss-offs, but not many; The Philosopher's Stone evokes Dylan, many of whose best songs have dribbled out years after they were cut. God knows why Morrison held some of this stuff back. - amazon.com

SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS - Voodoo Jive: The Best Of Screamin' Jay Hawkins (1990)

Back in the day, Screamin' Jay Hawkins put the show in show business. His voodoo-inspired stage act included fireworks, flash powder, snakes, shrunken heads, and his faithful companion, a skull named Henry. To start his concerts, he was carried on in a coffin, from which he leaped, as if risen from the dead, often sending a good portion of his audience scampering for the exits. All of that sounds quaint by current standards, but at the time it was as controversial, perhaps more so, than Marilyn Manson is today. So was Screamin' Jay's music, which was marked with wild, wordless exhortations and orgasmic screams. "Voodoo Jive" contains Hawkins's best cuts, including the essential "I Put a Spell on You" plus "Little Demon," "Frenzy," "Alligator Wine," and "Person to Person," among others. In the grand scheme of things, Hawkins's schtick made him a legend, but in the short run, he was limited by what some saw as a mere novelty act. Still, he recorded some fine, honking R&B and proto-rock & roll that still sounds great (and completely out of control). The closing cut here, "Constipation Blues," is not for the faint of heart, but then neither is anything else Hawkins ever recorded. - amazon.com

THE BRITISH BLUES QUINTET feat. MAGGIE BELL - Live In Glasgow (2007)

The British Blues Quintet is a British band, formed in London in 2006 by five veteran UK blues musicians. Its members are Zoot Money (keyboards and vocals), Colin Allen (drums), Maggie Bell (vocals), Colin Hodgkinson (bass and vocals) and Miller Anderson (guitar and vocals). They recorded a live album in 2007 Live In Glasgow (Recorded At The Ferry).

Maggie Bell from Scotland, is one of the world's greatest soul and blues singers. Maggie and drummer Colin Allen were both members of the legendary Stone The Crows. Zoot Money is one of the best 'good time' performers in the business. He not only plays great keyboards but also sings with guts and emotion. The other members of the quintet are Miller Anderson, who has played guitar with many top bands since the 1960s including the Keef Hartley Band, Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Mountain, T-Rex, and Donovan's band, and Colin Hodgkinson who was in Alexis Corner's band for almost 20 years, and has played with Whitesnake. This terrific quintet covers a great part of the British blues territory. The band go for the throat a great collection of blues standards and their own songs, and here, not knowing their engineers is recording the concert, the BBC are as natural as is gets

The CD contains 7 original songs and 6 Rockgrass re-interpretations of previously known works (by everyone from Mozart to Queen to The Prodigy), all of which focus on themes of killing and death hence the title, Killer Grass. "There's still plenty of drinking, cheating and hell in there too, as them 4 elements all go together like stink on poop," remarks front-maniac Barley Scotch. Killer Grass is either their absolute greatest musical achievement or absolute worst offence yet, depending on your personal perspective, but it is absolutely nothing in between.

ROY ROGERS + SHANA MORRISON - Everybody's Angel (1999)

Here is a surprise pairing: Roy Rogers, one of the greatest slide guitarists in the world, John Lee Hooker producer and sometime band member, and Shana Morrison, Van Morrison's daughter and new emerging songwriter talent. Together they have released an excellent album. Sassy-voiced Shana's jazzy blues delivery and Roy's country-edged vocals work warmly together - and those arrangement, Wow! The darkly laid-back opening track 'Molly O & Dog Boy' with it's steel guitar touches and acoustic percussion leads you into an album which demonstrates the incredible versatility of Rogers' guitar and confirm what many know - that Roy is a superb producer. Previous albums from Roy can flay you alive with their slide riffs. Here he is never bludgeoning, never subservient, just scarily perfect in his discretion and appropriateness. Tight musicianship: drums and percussion from Jimmy Sanchez, accordion and keyboards from Phil Aalberg, bass from Scoop McGuire, Dana Pandey's tabla and Robert Powell's pedal steel, underpin a great collection of songs and a must-have album.

LUCKY PETERSON - Beyond Cool (1993)

Here Lucky goes to Memphis. Several years into a solo career, the former blues whiz kid plays good keyboards and guitar, and sings stirringly on originals and covers from all over the black music map (Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Les McCann & Eddie Harris, blues piano master Roosevelt Sykes, etc.) His modern soul-cum-blues is hot, sweaty, and aggressive, and he gets the job done in busy arrangements shared with the Memphis Horns, honey-throated back-up singers, and muscular hired guns like bassist Willie Weeks and drummer Crusher Green. Peterson had the good sense to collaborate with New Yorker Jim Payne when writing five songs for the album, including the killer slow blues instrumental that doubles as the album title. - amazon.com

MEENA - Try Me (2010) thumbup

As she was fifteen, Meena founded her first band in company with Chris Fillmore. "We were a psychedelic rock band in those days and we were lucky to play many wild shows." She worked on stage with locals and musicians of international reputation as well, she played low paid and well played gigs. She met producers and managers, booking agents, co-producers, publishers and label bosses. And at the end, then Thomas Ruf entered the place. He decided - against the regulations of the mainstream music bizniz - to take me under his wings. Me, a rough bluessinger. A singer just sledded down from the mountains on to the shaky ground of the record industry." Ruf flew Meena across the pond right into the Mecca of the blues - Memphis, Tennessee. "He brought me and my guitar player Chris Fillmore to Jim Gaines in Memphis for recording our first official CD. From that moment on it felt for me like coming home. As if my life in 1977 could have begun right here in Stantonville." - rufrecords

RICK DERRINGER - Knighted By The Blues (2009)

Rick Derringer tried a variety of different things in the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s. The singer/guitarist recorded his share of middle of the road pop/rock and adult contemporary albums, and he even recorded an instrumental jazz-pop/smooth jazz album that had George Benson-ish leanings (2002's Free Ride). But Derringer, who turned 61 in 2008, has a way of going back to blues-rock and hard rock - which is exactly what he does on Knighted by the Blues. Granted, this 2009 release wasn't recorded with blues purists in mind; not everything on Knighted by the Blues adheres to the traditional 12-bar format. But the feeling of the blues is quite strong throughout this 51-minute CD; that feeling is as strong on Derringer's own songs as it is on enjoyable performances of Jimi Hendrix's "If 6 Was Nine" and Ray Charles' "Funny, I Still Love You." Knighted by the Blues is definitely one of Derringer's grittier, tougher, more ballsy efforts - and given his history, it isn't surprising that he would return to this type of approach. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - We Are Only Riders – The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Session Project (2010)

A band project of a stellar cast of musicians to honour the late great frontman of The Gun Club, Jeffrey Lee Pierce. Cypress Grove, his former bass player, worked his way through his private archive, finding lost songs, lost tapes, lost lyrics and over the past 13 years he got together with a lot of musicians who were friends with JLP, influenced by him or simply fans. He was able to get them working on the fragments he had and over the years an album came together which will drive you to tears of its sheer beauty and intenseness. Nick Cave duets with Blondie's Debbie Harry on 'Free To Walk'. Both singers also contribute solo tracks to the collection & Cave also plays piano on Harry's track 'Lucky Jim'. SHEMEKIA COPELAND - Talking To Strangers (2002)

This disc, which has Dr. John at the controls as a producer, brings together a mix that brings out the best for all those concerned and involved with this project. There is no weakness here, it is a straight-ahead use of all the strengths of Shemekia Copeland, daughter of Johnny Copeland. The songs were well selected to effectively show off all her potency as a vocalist. There are some many good writers that are also players on this disc that the tunes fit like gloves. There are strong contributions by John "Fingers" Hahn, Mac Rebennack, and Shemekia Copeland herself. The tunes, varied in style, are all based in the deep blues, and were selected for their capability to push her vocal talents to constant new personal pinnacles. She keeps it interesting by varying the pace and on "The Push I Need," she sounds right at home singing this funky tune as a duet with Dr. John. She stays with the good Dr. through the tune as if she were doing this everyday. Then she turns around and seems just as comfortable singing "Happy Valentine's Day," as a slow bluesy torch-burner, with minimal accompaniment. This disc shows us some new sides of this fine singer, while she stretches her limits and she more than holds her own while being in the company of such luminous musicians as accompany her on this disc. This disc seems a return to the blues burner she is capable of being. She does her daddy proud on this stellar disc. ~ cduniverse.com

IAN GILLAN - Rock Profile (1995)

Former vocalist for the Javelins and Episode Six, Ian Gillan joined Deep Purple in 1969. They recorded the legendary albums "Deep Purple In Rock", "Fireball", "Machine Head" and "Who Do We Think We Are", as well as a number of live albums. He left Deep Purple in 1973 due to differences with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, as well as exhaustion for excessive touring with Purple. He then formed The Ian Gillan Band around late 1975/early '76. They released two studio albums: "Child in Time" (1976), which included a "jazzy" version of the Purple classic, "Clear Air Turbulence" (1977), and a live album, recorded at the Budokan. He then disbanded "The Ian Gillan Band", and formed "Gillan". They released five albums: "Mr. Universe" (1979), "Future Shock" (1980), "Glory Road" (1980), "Double Trouble" (1981) and "Magic" (1982) before disbanding due to Ian's throat problems. Ian then met Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler and joined Black Sabbath in 1983. They did one album, "Born Again" that same year and toured in 1984. In that time, Ian got a call from Ritchie Blackmore, asking him to reform Purple MKII, along with band mates Jon Lord, Roger Glover and Ian Paice. Ian leaves Sabbath and rejoins Purple. They record "Perfect Strangers" (1984) and "The House of Blue Light" (1987), before his problems with Blackmore made him quit Purple yet again.

CHICAGO BLUES REUNION - Buried Alive In The Blues (2005)

A warm nostalgic document of second-generation Second City blues, the Chicago Blues Reunion brings together the core alumni (minus the late great Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield, of course) of the incredible blues scene in the city back in the ‘60s – keyboardist Barry Goldberg, who played with Bloomfield behind Dylan at Newport; Nick Gravenites, who wrote the title track that Janis Joplin made famous on Pearl; Corky Siegel, of the seminal Siegel-Schwall Band; and other names with great stories, from blues belter Tracy Nelson (Mother Earth) to Sam Lay (Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Dylan) to Harvey Mandel (Canned Heat), and the list goes on. The album begins with "Born in Chicago," the perfect opening number to get the feet moving and the blood pumping. It is followed by Gravenites’ aforementioned "Buried Alive in the Blues," before Tracy Nelson takes the commanding lead vocal on "Walk Away.” In addition to Gravenites and Nelson, there are two other vocalists on this album. Sam Lay provides the vocals for "Find My Baby" and "Hound Dog," while Corky Siegel lays down the vocals on "King Bee."

TONY FURTADO AND THE AMERICAN GYPSIES - Live Gypsy (2003)

Tony Furtado started out as a banjo prodigy and quickly became an up-and-coming player on the bluegrass scene, most notably with Laurie Lewis's band Grant Street. More recently, he has gone solo, picked up the slide guitar and started creating difficult-to-categorize music. This CD, a collection of live cuts from his 2002 tour, shows the current state of his art. Half of the tracks are live versions of pieces from his most recent studio album, American Gypsy. Furtado and company mix up folk, blues, bluegrass, rock and jazz and come out leaning toward the jazz end of the spectrum, albeit with some instruments not often found in jazz. Furtado's co-conspirators include Tom Brechtlein on drums and backing vocals, Myron Dove on bass, Paul McCandless on horns, flute and whistles, and John R. Burr on keyboards. (The concluding track, "Waiting for Guiteau," has a different lineup from the rest of the album.) The material combines pieces composed by Furtado and songs that are either traditional or written by others.

MUDDY WATERS - Muddy 'Mississippi' Waters Live - Legacy Edition (2003)

In its original edition as a 1979 live album, Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live was a pleasing addition to the great bluesman's catalog. The first CD here is a straight reissue of the 1979 LP, the second disc including no less than an hour of additional music. All of the music on disc two was previously unreleased, and all of it was recorded at the same August 1978 shows that yielded the bulk of the original LP. It's the second disc, naturally, that will hold the most interest for Waters fans. These are good performances with good backup musicians, including Johnny Winter, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, and Bob Margolin on guitars, James Cotton on harmonica, and Pinetop Perkins on piano. Most of the songs are old chestnuts and include "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Got My Mojo Workin'," and "Mannish Boy." There are a few songs that aren't as commonly available by Waters in live variations, like "Champagne and Reefer," performed here prior to its release on King Bee (with Waters stumbling on some of the lyrics); the traditional "Corrina, Corrina"; an "After Hours"/"Stormy Monday Blues" medley; "Kansas City," on which vocals are shared by Waters and Perkins; and "Trouble No More," which according to Margolin's liner notes "is one of the very few live versions of this song." - amazon.com

TINA SCHLIESKE - Evil Gal Blues (2008)

Tina Schlieske was born in Chicago and raised in the music hub of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her mother - herself the daughter of a Russian Opera diva, adored music and passed her passion along to her children. Tina was weaned on 70's FM radio and the music her Mother blasted from her stereo. Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, the Beatles, and Elvis were all early inspirations. But then an Aretha Franklin tape her sister Laura gave to her sealed Tina's musical fate. She had her first guitar at 13, and her first electric guitar at 16 and taught herself out of the chord books she found in her sister's piano bench. As a teenager with an independent streak, Tina formed a band, Tina & the B-Sides, a rock/soul/blues concoction that went on to become one of the most popular bands in the Midwest. Starting her own independent label Movement Records along with an aggressive touring schedule of back-to-back two hour plus shows and an onstage energy that ignited the crowds earned Tina a reputation that was hard to ignore. Seymour Stein from Sire records went to see a Tina and the B-Sides show at the famed CBGB's in New York and she was signed the next day.....tinaschlieske.com

Recorded with old pal Chris Layton (drummer for Double Trouble), Sheldon Gomberg (bass), Jeff Young (keys - Sting, Bonnie Raitt) and David Kalish (gtr). It's a collection of old blues songs by women artists like Big Momma Thornton, Memphis Minnie, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Etta James, Aretha and more.

10. It's All About You
11. Headed South

Brothers Johnny (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Donnie (.38 Special) Van Zant have made a home for themselves at the intersection of Southern rock and contemporary country, all but blurring the boundary. Between the roaring road song that opens the album ("Train") and the weary road song that closes it ("Headed South"), Van Zant balance down-home party rockers such as "Goes Down Easy" and "It's Only Money" with the more serious balladry of "We Can't Do It Alone" (a spiritual sequel of sorts to "Get Right With the Man"), "That Scares Me," and "The Hardest Thing." Though the title song is little more than a banjo-laced string of country clichés and "These Colors Don't Run" is a patriotic bumper sticker, this solid sophomore effort should win the brotherly duo more country fans. - amazon.com

In February, 2005 the Cowboy Junkies gathered together for five days of music making at their Clubhouse studio in Toronto. Each band member brought along a handful of their favorite songs by other writers -- songs which focused on the themes of war, violence, fear, greed, ignorance and loss. The atmosphere that week was so magical that the band decided to simply roll tape and document the sessions. The result is Early 21st Century Blues, an album filled with a very special intimacy unmatched since the Junkies released their landmark The Trinity Session album 18 years ago. Early 21st Century Blues features interpretations of songs from artists such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon, plus two new Junkies originals, and is the Junkies' own "small document of hope" for the times we live in. - amazon.com

ERIC BIBB - Booker's Guitar (2010)

The story is as legendary as Robert Johnson at the crossroads, as old as the blues itself. A traveling musician has a chance encounter in the most unlikely of places with something mystical and powerful, and everything changes. Suddenly, everything is up for grabs, and the music - already rich and historically resonant - takes a whole new direction. So it was for itinerant troubadour Eric Bibb one night in a London hotel after a gig just a few years ago, when he was approached by a fan carrying a guitar case. Inside the case was a relic from the past that made the hair on the back of Bibb's neck stand on end: a 1930s vintage Resophonic National steel-body guitar that had belonged to Delta blues legend Booker White. In a moment that could only be described as intoxicating, Bibb found himself holding Booker's guitar, and catching a brief but revealing glimpse of all the stories locked within it.

Booker's Guitar inspired a song, and the song became an entire album - one that captures the spirit of the original Delta blues of the early 20th century and reinterprets it for a new era. The title track, Bibb recorded in England using White's guitar. The remaining tracks, although recorded in rural Ohio on Bibb's own guitars, sprang from the same well of inspiration. "Once I had written that song, I really wanted to make a complete statement and document my connection to the Delta blues tradition," says Bibb. "I really wanted to put myself in the position of my heroes, but in a contemporary context, and create songs that I feel could have been part of their repertoire and could have come from their own experience." That journey is one that crosses generations as much distances on any map. In the end, Booker's Guitar - mystical and powerful - is the instrument that connects Eric Bibb to another era, and at the same time connects the blues of another era to the human experience of the modern day. "Writing a country blues song that draws on the traditions but is not rehashing old material from another era - writing something that's both connected to that tradition but is contemporary as well - is hugely challenging," says Bibb. "It's tricky, but I was so happy that I was able to do it for a whole album, and really feel like I could stay focused on that whole sound and that whole culture. It was an achievement that I had been wanting to pull off, but hadn't been able to do until now." - amazon.com

SADE - Soldier of Love (2010)

After a 10-year hiatus, Sade Adu has re-emerged on the music scene with a remarkable opus entitled Soldier of Love. Upon review, one will find that when the sacred and secular combine, therein, at the crux, lies Sade. The 10 tracks on Soldier flow seamlessly together—showcasing the harmonious spiritual connection between Paul Spencer Denman, Andrew Hale, Stuart Matthewman and lead singer, Sade Adu. And according to the band’s electronic press kit, they never enter the studio with a set agenda or prepared lyrics. They just let the music create itself organically. Such a natural, free-flowing process is a rare occurrence in the contemporary landscape—especially over a thirty-year time period. The band originally formed in 1982, but has only released five studio albums to date. So when Sade’s musical history is kept in mind, the 10-year wait for Solider of Love was not intentional, because the group ultimately believes that music should only be created when one has something to say.

As “soldiers of love,” the members of Sade know (and trust) that love has the power to conquer all—pain, tragedy and confusion. Thus, the opening track, “The Moon and the Sky,” addresses an unknown lover saying: “you always know the reason why / why this love ain’t gonna let you go.” The final notes segue into military cadence of “Soldier of Love” where Adu finds herself at the “borderline of [her] faith” and the “hinterland of [her] devotion.” In spite of all the drama, there is ray of a sunshine at the fringes of despair. On the following track, “Morning Bird,” the delicate piano notes rise softly like the morning sun.

TRACKS:
01. The Moon and the Sky 02. Soldier of Love 03. Morning Bird 04. Babyfather 05. Long Hard Road 06. Be That Easy 07. Bring Me Home 08. In Another Time 09. Skin 10. The Safest Place

SUPER CHIKAN - Chikadelic (2009)

The Blues Foundation (www.Blues.org) announced the 2010 Blues Music Award nominations, and Super Chikan received four nominations: BB King Entertainer of the Year, Song of the Year for "Fred's Dollar Store", Traditional Blues Album for Chikadelic, and Traditional Blues Male Artist.

James "Super Chikan" Johnson is an American blues musician, artist and guitar maker based in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He is the nephew of fellow blues musician Big Jack Johnson. As an adult, “Super Chikan” began driving a truck for a living. During the long stretches on the road, he began composing his own songs. When he showed some of the songs to his friends, they convinced him to go a studio and record them. He then started playing with some renowned local musicians, but he decided he would rather perform on his own than try to conform his style to that of his band-mates. He did so, and in 1997 “Super Chikan” released his debut album, Blues Come Home to Roost, influenced by such musicians as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Chuck Berry. He went on to release What You See in 2000, Shoot That Thang in 2001, and Chikan Supe in 2005, and Sum Mo Chikan in 2008. Chikadelic, Super Chikan's latest CD, was released at the Notodden Blues festival on July 31, 2009. Backed by Spoonful of Blues, Super Chikan once again dives head first into his creative and inventive blues that will have you up dancing - even to the slow songs!

B.B. KING - Reflections (2003)

01. Exactly Like You
02. On My Word of Honor
03. I Want a Little Girl
04. I'll String Along with You
05. I Need You
06. A Mother's Love
07. (I Love You) for Sentimental Reasons
08. Neighbourhood Affair
09. Tomorrow Night
10. There I've Said it Again
11. Always on My Mind
12. Cross My Heart
13. What a Wonderful World

B.B. King unleashes his inner crooner on this collection of 13 of his sentimental favorites. With a five-piece studio band rather than his usual orchestra, the arrangements stay spare throughout, allowing King to exercise his classic vocal chops--although some fans may be disappointed by his low-key guitar playing, as King's beloved axe Lucille plays second fiddle to Texas guitarist Doyle Bramhall II's six-string. Still, King's in excellent voice, whether revisiting early inspiration Lonnie Johnson's romantic "Tomorrow Night," embracing buddy Willie Nelson's golden "Always on My Mind," or tackling numbers recorded by Sam Cooke and Nat "King" Cole ("(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons"), Louis Armstrong ("What a Wonderful World"), and Frank Sinatra ("I'll String Along with You"). Fans will recognize "On My Word of Honor" and the King original "Neighborhood Affair" from previous recordings and "I Want a Little Girl" from his live performances. Although King does justice to all these numbers, his most heartfelt selection may be "A Mother's Love," a performance that seems to draw on the heartache he still carries from the loss of his own mother when he was a child, nearly 70 years ago. - amazon.com

THE NIGHTHAWKS - Jacks & Kings Vol. I & II (1979)

The Nighthawks were playing with Muddy Waters at the Cellar Door at the time, so they invited his band to come into the studio after hours to record some classic Chicago blues tunes, including Jimmy Rogers “Walking By Myself,” John Lee Hooker’s “Sugar Mama,” and Elmore James “Dust My Broom” and “The Sky is Crying.” The result was a classic—a showcase of inspired playing of outstanding blues, titled “Jacks & Kings.” The band to this day regards this as one of their finest moments, and it became probably their best selling album.

In 1979, Adelphi created “Jacks & Kings, Volume 2: Full House.” This featured some quality, previously unreleased material from Side Pocket Shot and the Jacks & Kings sessions. The musical highlights included Paul Butterfield’s “Born in Chicago,” Robert Nighthawk’s “Anna Lee,” and Earl Hooker’s “Two Bugs and a Roach.” It was another solid showcase of classic blues mixed with rock and roll, and has been re-released as the combined CD “Jacks & Kings Volume I & II.”

SANTANA - Greatest Hits (2008)

Carlos Augusto Alves Santana is a Mexican rock musician and guitarist. Santana became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which pioneered a blend of rock, salsa and jazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin percussion such as timbales and congas. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a sudden resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone also named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. Considering (at least) the albums Santana, Abraxas, Zebop!, Supernatural and Shaman, Carlos Santana is the only musician to reach the top ten on Billboard 200 for four consecutive decades with non-compilation albums. - wikipedia

LANGHORNE SLIM - Be Set Free (2009)

2009 release, the third album from the mighty Langhorne Slim. One of the most endearing and standout qualities of Slim's live shows is the sureness that one is always entering a genuine Gospel-like musical experience full of little miracles. Be Set Free has captured this charisma and spirit -the "hold your heart" moments and "raise a drink" dance vibes shine throughout with lush string arrangements and the fine sonic talents of drummer Malachi DeLorenzo and new bassist Jeff Ratner. Langhorne's stronger than ever vocals lead the journey blending his poetry through the beautiful chaos and bearing a wisdom that reflects a broken heart battling the perils of true hope. Be Set Free is also one of Langhorne's most cinematic and cohesive efforts to date. Slim has truly reached a point of light where these songs come from wide-eyed maturity and mastered craft. - amazon.com

CHARLIE SEYLES - I Got Something To Say (1995)

Harmonica player Charlie Sayles is starting to carve out a hard-fought niche for himself in U.S. blues circles, thanks to some help from the London-based JSP Records. Sayles has two excellent albums out on the JSP label, Night Ain't Right (1990) and I Got Something to Say, a 1995 release.

Although life hasn't been easy for Sayles, he seems to have come through the traumas okay. They started in his childhood, when he was shifted from his broken home to a long procession of foster homes. He ended up joining the Army in the late 1960s and was promptly shipped to South Vietnam. His tour of duty ended in 1971, and he came back to Massachusetts for a time. Sayles picked up the blues harp while he was in Vietnam and made a slow adjustment back to civilized society upon his return from three years in the infantry. He discovered the music of Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller) after he returned home and learned all he could from those recordings. Sayles began to make trips to New York City, Atlanta, St. Louis and other cities, playing on the streets for tips from passersby in 1974 and for several years thereafter. He worked when he needed money as a day laborer. He hasn't had a real day job since then, patiently plying his craft in clubs, on street corners and more recently, at blues festivals...... ~ All Music Guide
