THE ROLLING STONES - Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! The Rolling Stones In Concert [40th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set] (2009) 40 x thumbup

"GET YER YA-YA'S OUT!" - recorded in 1969 over two nights at Madison Square Garden - is the last official live document of the Rolling Stones in their swaggering Sixties prime; it's also one of the greatest live albums of all time. Expectations were high for the band on its 1969 tour, the Stones' first in the U.S. in three years, and their first outing without guitarist Brian Jones, who had died that summer. They delivered in spades. Keith Richards and new guitarist Mick Taylor combined for angry workouts on Ya-Ya's' "Midnight Rambler" - the album's bluesy nine-minute masterpiece - and a stark, rubbery "Sympathy For The Devil." Mick Jagger and Richards pull apart Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie" into a raunchy romp, as if to prove they had fully mastered the rock form. This three-disc remastered Ya-Ya's includes the original in all its gritty glory. Disc Two is a five-song EP from the same shows, with acoustic performances - "Prodigal Son" and "You Gotta Move" - from Richards (playing a resonator guitar) and Jagger. The third disc is an unexpected treat: blistering sets by openers B.B. King plus Ike and Tina Turner (doing an outrageously steamy take on Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long"). And serious rock geeks will enjoy the final flourish: the original ROLLING STONE. - amazon.com

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE ASBURY JUKES - The Best of Southside Johnny (1992)

Although Bruce Springsteen may be the best known and most successful New Jersey working class rocker, Southside Johnny has been responsible for some fine moments as well (although admittedly, Springsteen and his guitarist Little Steven wrote many a song for Johnny). Southside Johnny and his backing band, the Asbury Jukes, are more R&B influenced than the Boss, but still know how to get a party going with sing-along rockers and tender ballads. The 19-track 1992 compilation, BEST OF SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY, is fine place to start for the newcomer, as it focuses mainly on the Jukes' stronger '70s albums. Standouts include the soulful rockers "The Fever," "Love on the Wrong Side of Town," and "Without Love." - cduniverse.com HERE

ROGER GLOVER - Greatest Hits (1996)

Born in Brecon, South Wales, Great Britain in 1945. Roger Glover is a bass player, songwriter, producer, artist who has a fantastic career to his credit. He started his musical career in different local groups in the early sixties and it was one of those groups that later changed their name to Episode Six. Episode Six released a couple of singles and was a very popular band but the big breakthrough for Roger was still a few years away. In 1969 he and the singer in Episode Six, Ian Gillan, was asked to join Deep Purple and they both accepted the offer. In Rock, their first studio album with Purple became a huge success and they became one of the biggest if not The biggest rock band in the world. After a few years of massive success with Deep Purple he left after internal conflicts in 1973 and decided to launch a new career as a producer. The list of groups he's produced is long, artist such as Nazareth, Judas Priest, Status Quo and Rory Gallagher are just some of them. His first solo album was called Roger Glover and Guests - "The Butterfly Ball". The album was released in 1974 and was supposed to be the soundtrack to a cartoon movie but the film never did happen. The album itself had a long list of guest musicians and some of the more well know names are David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Tony Ashton and Ronnie James Dio. A few years later in 1978 he got the job as bass player and producer in his former Deep Purple colleague Ritchie Blackmore's band, Rainbow. In Rainbow he enjoyed some great success around the world and he stayed in the band up 'til 1984 when the famous Deep Purple Mk II lineup was about to reform. Today Roger Glover continues to make excellent music with Deep Purple and they are still playing concerts to sell out crowds all around the globe. Their fan base is growing bigger and bigger each year and live they are better than ever. RG himself is solid as a rock on stage and one of the highlights for me at every concert is to see him play with that incredibly tight groove. - home.swipnet.se/rogerglover/ HERE

RORY BLOCK - Lovin' Whiskey: A Colllection Of Songs From The Rounder Years (2009)

Aurora "Rory" Block has staked her claim to be one of America's top acoustic blues women, an interpreter of the great Delta blues singers, a slide guitarist par excellence, and also a talented songwriter on her own account. Born and raised in Manhattan by a family that had bohemian leanings, she spent her formative years hanging out with musicians like Peter Rowan, John Sebastian, and Geoff Muldaur, who hung out in her father's sandal shop, before picking up the guitar at the age of ten. Her record debut came two years later, backing her father on The Elektra String Band Project, a concept album. She met guitarist Stefan Grossman, who, like her, was in love with the blues. The pair would often travel to the Bronx to visit Reverend Gary Davis, one of the greatest living bluesmen. At the tender age of 15 Block left home, hitting the road in true '60s fashion and traveling through the South, where she learned her blues trade at the feet of Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt, her greatest influence, before ending up in Berkeley. It was there that she developed her slide technique (she uses a socket wrench as her slide), but she didn't record until 1975, when she released I'm in Love (a compilation of earlier material, The Early Tapes 1975-1976, appeared later). After two records for Chrysalis, she recorded the instructional How to Play Blues Guitar for Grossman's Kicking Mule label, and later moved to then-fledgling Rounder, with whom she enjoyed an ongoing relationship.... ~ All Music Guide

10. The Unspoken Quest

Featuring killer slide guitar, Mohan Veena and piano, Bread and Buddha is a timely reflection on the ephemeral nature of human existence. An intrepid traveler from the very beginning, Harry Manx’s ninth album is a culmination of thirty-five years of world exploration. Bread and Buddha is one man’s musical meditation on the ephemeral nature of the human experience. The songs inhabit "a rare musical place where blues, country, folk and Indian classical music co-exist as some spirit force". Harry has pulled out all the stops with the instrumentation on this outing, including ample use of piano, organ, and scored strings along with drums and bass. This gives the songs a lushness and maturity, much like a well-seasoned wine. Two years in the making, the album is self produced with help from Juno-award winning engineer John “Beetle” Bailey. - amazon.com

08. Love

10. Hurricane Eye
11. Quiet

The disaster of Songs from the Capeman hit Paul Simon particularly hard, so he decided to quickly record a new album, his first proper collection of songs since 1990's The Rhythm of the Saints - his first album in ten years, really. Nevertheless, if this album has a relative, it's 1982's Hearts and Bones, since it's a deliberately low-key, insular record, especially when compared to the sweeping worldbeat explorations of Graceland and Rhythm. But where Hearts and Bones was a singer/songwriter album, no two ways about it, You're the One illustrates the influence of its predecessors, but it's not showy about it. The African and South American rhythms are as much a foundation of Simon's music as folk is, and his compositions reflect it, boasting surprisingly tricky rhythms that carry through to his melodies themselves. That, combined with Simon's determination to meet aging head-on, makes You're the One a bit of an acquired taste, especially since its compositions are never overtly accessible and melodic - they're all tone poems, driven as much by tone and lyric as song itself. This all results in a record that may be a little too deliberately low-key and elliptical for most tastes, especially since it demands full concentration even from serious fans. But this does reward close listening, and even if it doesn't shine as brilliantly as Hearts and Bones (his most underappreciated record), it does share some similarities in that it's an unassumingly intellectual record that feels like it was made without an audience in mind. Which means it's more interesting than successful, but interesting can have its own rewards. - All Music Guide HERE

LAURIE ANDERSON - Mister Heartbreak (1984)

01. Sharkey's Day
02. Langue d'Amour
03. Gravity's Angel
04. Kokoku
05. Excellent Birds
06. Blue Lagoon
07. Sharkey's Night

"Mister Heartbreak" is the second album by avant-garde artist, singer and composer Laurie Anderson, released in 1984. "Mister Heartbreak" features a number of stunning luminaries on the cutting edge of popular music at the time. Striking guitar work by King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew permeates this disc, notably on "Sharkey's Day", punchy and angular. The production and bass work from Bill Laswell is superb. Peter Gabriel, at the time still coming off the buzz of his departure from Genesis, is featured in a duet with Anderson on "Excellent Birds." There is a heavy reliance on early-'80s synthesizers which would normally be very off-putting, but here they are executed well. Nowhere does the music slip into irreparable '80s cliché; it is still an entertaining listen. Lyrics are typical of Anderson' work, complex, literate, provocative, difficult to fully comprehend. Haunting "Gravity's Angel" borrows imagery from Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow. Spoken word delivery on "Sharkey's Night" is given by the legendary William S. Burroughs. This is a very satisfying listen and a great intro for those unfamiliar with Anderson's work. HERE

ENYA - Only Time - The Collection (2002)

A wonderful gift, this handsomely packaged four-CD box set (purple velvet cover, gold-foil lettering) also serves as an inviting midcareer retrospective of an uncommon vocalist-sonic architect. Only Time: The Collection is a mix-and-match assortment of tracks spanning Enya's first five U.S. releases (including her 1987 debut, The Celts) and embellished with a half-dozen B-sides not found on her previous U.S.-released albums. Chief among them are "May It Be" (from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack); "Isobella," a hushed, slowly evolving beauty formerly available only in Japan; and "Oiche Chiun (Silent Night)." The set's fourth disc is an enhanced CD that includes 1996 video footage of Enya performing "Oiche Chiun" during a BBC special. Also included is a 44-page, tall-format booklet filled with regal artist photos, song lyrics, and commentary on each track written by lyricist Roma Ryan. Some notations are throwaway items. Others are insightful, such as the unfinished lyrics (about lost love) for the instrumental title track to A Day Without Rain. The order is a jumble, usually mixing tracks from two recordings onto one disc. The stylistic difference between her dated 1987 debut and the sophistication of 1988's Watermark makes for some occasionally jarring listening on disc one. On the other hand, the opening sequence on disc three ("After Ventus," "No Holly for Miss Quinn," "The Memory of Trees") is mesmerizing. Overall, nicely done. This Collection is the first career spanning collection of Enya's work, gracing 4CDs with 50 tracks. Featuring signature Enya favorites such as 'Orinoco Flow,' 'Only Time,' 'Caribbean Blue,' 'The Celts,' 'Book Of Days,' 'The Memory Of Trees' and much more. Also includes tracks not previously available on any domestic release such as 'Isobella,' 'Book Of Days' (Original Single Version) and 'May It Be' (Single Version). 48 page booklet features liner notes by lyricist Roma Ryan, a discography and archival photos. The 4th disc is enhanced with the previously unreleased performance of 'Silent Night'. - amazon.com

ROBERT PALMER - Best Of Both Worlds: The Robert Palmer Anthology (1974-2001) [2002]

Most pop stars are lucky if they can create one enduring piece of cultural iconography for themselves. Unfortunately for Robert Palmer, his MTV-forged persona as impeccably tailored ‘80s crooner backed by a band of leggy fashion models largely overshadowed a career that was as eclectic as it was accomplished. Those who know the singer only by his video for "Addicted to Love" arguably don't know Palmer at all. Indeed, during the previous decade his ostensibly blue-eyed soul sensibilities had actually encompassed funk, New Orleans R&B, reggae, rock, and pop both Euro ("Give Me an Inch") and synth Gary Numan's "I Dream of Wires"). But that creative restlessness also seems to be the reason his commercially promising stint in the all-star Power Station (represented here by "Some Like It Hot" and an infectious cover of T. Rex's "Bang A Gong") was so short-lived. And it's perhaps why, after "Simply Irresistible" and the surge of alternative rock essentially marked the end of his MTV prime, his ‘90s work variously retrenched Palmer in soul (including a rewarding medley of Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me"/"I Want You"), torch songs, Caribbean influences, and even Delta blues. This collection ably completes the musical circle Palmer began in the mid ‘70s, astutely chronicling pop's ongoing battle between style and substance along the way. - amazon.com

TOMMY BOLIN - The Ultimate: Redux (2008)

This budget-priced three-CD set collects a broad cross-section of recordings made by guitar ace Tommy Bolin during the 1970s. Though Bolin spent time in both the James Gang and Deep Purple, and also played with fusion drummer Billy Cobham, THE ULTIMATE focuses mainly on solo work, including low-key acoustic recordings and gritty demo and live performances. Not to worry though, sparks still fly throughout, particularly on the tunes from the 1972 Energy album. A rock-&-roll footnote to many, Tommy Bolin is a bona fide guitar hero to shredders in the know, and THE ULTIMATE displays not only his chops on guitar but his versatility as a songwriter and performer. This three-disc collection, Ultimate: Redux, of rare, demo, and live material is actually the compilation of compilations. Two earlier volumes that contain a lot of the same material appeared on Rhino in 1996 as two separate volumes titled From the Archives, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and more of this stuff appeared on the various issues of Live at Ebbetts Field. Hardcore fans already know that the sound on much of this is dodgy at best, bootleg quality (and we're talking old-school bootleg) in some cases. Some of the rest consists of working demos and even cassette demos. - cduniverse.com

Singer Cassandra Wilson is a master interpreter of American music. With her unmistakable honeyed husky voice and quaintly rustic aesthetic she has made intimate and personal statments with jazz, blues, R&B, country, and pop chestnuts- few artists can reveal the sensual earthiness of the Monkees tune "The Last Train to Clarksville." "Closer to You - The Pop Side" celebrates the finest pop moments from her seven album, decade plus legacy with Blue Note. In addition to the aforementioned 1960s net, this release features her stark and achingly vulnerable take on U2's "Love Is Blindness" as well as her transcendent take on Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" that evokes fireflies and shooting stars. Among its 11 tracks are favorites from Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and a tenderly romantic version of Sting's "Fragile". - amazon.com

KRAFTWERK - The Catalogue (2009)

Kraftwerk ("power plant" or "power station") is a highly influential electronic music band from Düsseldorf, Germany. The signature Kraftwerk sound combines driving, repetitive rhythms with catchy melodies, mainly following a Western classical style of harmony, with a minimalistic and strictly electronic instrumentation. The group's simplified lyrics are at times sung through a vocoder or generated by computer-speech software. In the early to late 1970s and the early 1980s, Kraftwerk's distinctive sound was revolutionary, and it has had a lasting impact across many genres of modern popular music.

The Catalogue (German title: Der Katalog) is a boxed set comprising eight albums by Kraftwerk that were released from 1974 to 2003. All albums are digitally remastered, with most of the cover art redesigned, including rare photographs in the liner notes that were not part of each album's original release.

The albums included in the boxed set are the following:
HERE
01 - Autobahn (1974)
02 - Radio-Activity - (German title: Radio-Aktivität) (1975)
03 - Trans-Europe Express - (German title: Trans-Europa Express) (1977)
04 - The Man-Machine - (German title: Die Mensch-Maschine) (1978)
05 - Computer World - (German title: Computerwelt) (1981)
06 - Electric Café (1986) - (here given its original name of Techno Pop)
07 - The Mix (1991)

ELVIS COSTELLO - The Very Best Of Elvis Costello (2001)

Elvis Costello seems to have an aversion to presenting his work in a logical, comprehensive fashion, if the double-disc The Very Best of Elvis Costello is any indication. Like its predecessor, Girls Girls Girls, it sprawls over two discs, with very little regard to chronology or style, baffling and enticing listeners in equal measure. Although there are certainly some terrific songs missing, it's hard to argue with much of what's here (with the notable exception of the cuts here to lure in collectors - the Charles Aznavour cover of "She," first heard in Notting Hill, and a version of "That Day Is Done," recorded with the Fairfield Four, featured on their 1997 album). So, as a reasonably thorough, albeit scattershot, overview, this works pretty well, since the music itself is good, even if it doesn't make sense when presented in this fashion (if it was intended to illustrate Costello's stylistic sweep, it winds up as counterproductive, since it's confusing in this fashion, not enticing). Still, the curious will prefer the single-disc sampler, The Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions, since it's not only more concise, it illustrates Costello's depth and range equally well. And if you want to dig deeper after hearing that, the original albums are worth any fan's time. ~ cduniverse.com - HERE

V.A. - A Twist Of Marley: A Tribute (2001)

Purists in the reggae community will be up in arms against producer Lee Ritenour for this 13-track star-studded effort, while the smooth-jazz world will rejoice over one of the year's best albums. While the former group cringes, the latter will marvel at how the guitar legend can take a well-known reggae anthem such as "Get Up, Stand Up," remove every ounce of reggae from it, add his buddy Dave Grusin to the mix, and make it sound like they wrote it for one of their duet albums. Even world-music purists should appreciate the same reggae-purifying process applied to "No Woman, No Cry" and "Redemption Song," with only the African elements left in, supplied in abundance by South African Jonathan Butler and Cameroonian Richard Bona, respectively. The results beat with the pulse of the continent more so than Marley's originals. Most other tracks maintain the reggae rhythms, with a definite commercial smooth-jazz lilt. There are no misses, but the bull's-eyes are both Maxi Priest tracks, and the inspired parings of Marc Antoine with Patti Austin and Rick Braun with Phil Perry. - amazon.com

KING CRIMSON - In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969) [40th Anniversary Edition 2009]

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

It was, quite simply, a sound that shook the music world. When King Crimson emerged from the dust of the considerably more oblique and largely absurd trio of Giles, Giles and Fripp—whose one release, The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp (Deram, 1968), was aptly titled—nobody could have anticipated that this group would literally change the face of the pop world, and almost single-handedly define a new musical genre: progressive rock. Crimson co-founder/guitarist Robert Fripp has, with a number of subsequent incarnations of Crimson, only partly been successful in distancing his flagship group from that stylistic marker, but in many ways it matters not. As labels become increasingly meaningless, revisiting this seminal album reveals far more than any reductionist categorization can. Never mind previous CD issues claiming to be "Definitive Editions," "Original Master Editions" and "30th Anniversary Editions." For the first time since its initial release, not just remixed but remastered as well in both stereo and 5.1 surround, the 40th Anniversary Series incarnation of In the Court of the Crimson King is the gold standard against which all previous editions will be measured—and, ultimately, fail. Crimson's entire original discography will, during 2009/2010, be reissued in truly definitive editions, and based on this title and the parallel-release of Red, it's going to be a grand period of rediscovery and just plain discovery, with previously unheard details now audible, and a bevy of bonus tracks, alternate versions and video content made available, in many cases for the first time. - allaboutjazz.com

DIRE STRAITS LIVE

Dire Straits were a British rock band, formed by Mark Knopfler (vocals and lead guitar), his younger brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and vocals), and Pick Withers (drums and percussion), and managed by Ed Bicknell, active between 1977 and 1995. Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock was at the forefront, Dire Straits played a more conventional style, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s.[citation needed] In their early days, Mark and David requested that pub owners turn down their sound so that patrons could converse while the band played, an indication of their unassuming demeanor. Despite this oddly self-effacing approach to rock and roll, Dire Straits soon became hugely successful, with their first album going multi-platinum globally.Throughout the band's career Mark Knopfler was the songwriter and driving force behind the group. The band's best-known songs include "Sultans of Swing", "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Private Investigations", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", "So Far Away", "Brothers in Arms", "On Every Street" and "Calling Elvis". Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date. - wikipedia

COLDPLAY - Greatest Hits (2008)

Coldplay are an English alternative rock band formed in London in 1998. The group comprises Chris Martin (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Guy Berryman (bass guitar), and Will Champion (drums, backing vocals, other instruments). Coldplay's early material was compared to acts such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, U2, and Travis. They achieved worldwide fame with the release of the single "Yellow", followed by their debut album, Parachutes (2000), which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), won multiple awards, including NME's Album of the Year. Their next release, X&Y (2005), received a slightly less enthusiastic yet still generally positive reception. The band's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), was produced by Brian Eno and released again to largely favourable reviews, earning several Grammy nominations and wins. Coldplay have sold over 50 million records worldwide. Since the release of Parachutes, Coldplay have drawn influence from other sources, including Echo & the Bunnymen, Kate Bush, George Harrison and Muse on A Rush of Blood to the Head, Johnny Cash and Kraftwerk for X&Y and Blur, Arcade Fire and My Bloody Valentine on Viva la Vida. Coldplay have been an active supporter of various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International. The group have also performed at various charity projects such as Band Aid 20, Live 8, Sound Relief, and the Teenage Cancer Trust. - wikipedia

GLENN HUGHES & FRIENDS - A Tribute To Tommy Bolin (1998) thumbup

After Tommy’s death, Glenn Hughes continued to make music on his own terms, playing with an astonishing variety of musicians from Black Sabbath to Earth, Wind, and Fire, as well as leading his own bands. He never forgot the Come Taste The Band era, however; that album’s haunting closer, “You Keep On Moving,” would appear in Glenn’s sets, and he offered some pointed words for the King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Deep Purple CD liner notes in 1995: “I didn’t really dig playing with Deep Purple, with the exception of the period with Tommy Bolin. That was a special version of the band.” 1997 Glenn made the pilgrimage to Colorado to pay tribute to his musical soulmate at the Bluebird Theater in Denver. The results - already bootlegged, but presented here in pristine quality - finally get to speak for themselves. - tbolin.com

Backed by a versatile 5 piece band, Waits departs from the songs' original incarnations. The songs instrumentation and rhythms are rearranged and reimagined. Swampy tribal rhythms, ominous hymns, gypsy flavored ballads, searing rhythmic r&b, and blues boogies. angular and surreal rock are all present. The songs, as expected, are about hanged men, woebegone sailors, sword swallowers, fugitives, shamans, ghosts, dance instructors and prison guards. - tomwaits.com HERE OR HERE

FRANK ZAPPA - Frank Zappa Plays the Music of Frank Zappa - A Memorial Tribute (1996)

07. Watermelon In Easter Hay (album version)

This 1996 CD compilation was the first one put out privately by the Zappa family following Frank Zappa's death in 1993. The music includes three new versions of familiar Zappa works, followed bytheir better-known counterparts that have previously appeared on both LPs and CDs. As Dweezil Zappa explains in his liner notes, this previously unreleased excerpt from "Black Napkins" is not yet fully formed; oddly enough, like the version that follows from Zoot Allures, the Napoleon Murphy Brock sax solo has been edited out. The new version of the next instrumental, "Zoot Allures," fares better in comparison to the well-known take from the Zoot Allures CD, in spite of some distortion inadvertently added by the Tokyo PA system during its recording. "Merely a Blues in A" marks the initial release of a gritty blues likely improvised during a 1974 Paris concert. Finally, two versions of Zappa's sensational blues "Watermelon in Easter Hay" close the CD. The early 1978 concert version features a slightly faster tempo with minimal accompaniment by his band, although Zappa's solo ideas are already well conceived. Zappa's solo on the studio version, originally heard on the release Joe's Garage Acts 2 & 3, was taken from a concert recording and mixed with a sparse yet effective studio backing; it remains one of Zappa's most fascinating guitar solos. Unlike the posthumous new Zappa CDs that have appeared on Rykodisc after 1993, this one carries a rather high price tag, although it consists of only four new recordings among its seven tracks. The fancy package includes a removable stick-on moustache and goatee like the late composer's own facial hair. JERRY GARCIA BAND - Let It Rock (2009) thumbup

The latest release to come from the Garcia vault is Let It Rock: Jerry Garcia Band 1975 a 2-CD set recorded November 17 and 18, 1975 at the Keystone Berkeley, featuring the very first version of the Jerry Garcia Band, with the magnificent British pianist Nicky Hopkins, drummer Ron Tutt and ol’ reliable—bassist John Kahn. This marks the first-ever full release of material from the brief but fruitful Garcia-Hopkins union (August through December ’75), and it shows the group at its best, rolling though a broad range of styles, from the churning opener, “Let It Rock,” to Dead favorites like “Sugaree,” “They Love Each Other” and a lively “Friend of the Devil,” to boppin’ R&B—“Tore Up Over You,” “Roadrunner”—a 19-minute workout (!) on the Stones’ “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” and Nicky’s exceptional instrumental track “Edward.” The sound on these discs is impeccable: They were mixed from 16-track master tapes by Jeffrey Norman, who has mixed and mastered countless Dead-related projects through the years. The clarity of the vocals and instruments is absolutely stunning—it’s practically like being at the legendary Keystone Berkeley, except without that distinctive smell of beer and popcorn, and the clacking of the foosball table in the back room. The icing on this particular slice of psychedelic cake is a fine essay by David Gans which probes the Jerry-Nicky dynamic and offers some needed historical context. In short, this one is a must for Jerry freaks (and doesn’t that include all of us?)! - dead.net

"Love, Janis" is the companion CD to the stage of the same name. This unique compilation commemorates the theater production and reveals the real Janis Joplin by going beyond her music. "Love, Janis" captures the soul of Janis Joplin by combining her music with her private words. This is not a cast recording. There are the original recordings - performed by Janis - of 12 classic Janis Joplin songs. These spoken word passages have been excerped from Janis's letters to her family. NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS - Murder Ballads (1996) thumbup

05. Where the Wild Roses Grow
06. The Curse of Millhaven

10. Death Is Not the End PJ Harvey

Nick Cave's been writing songs about killing and other evil things since he first surfaced in 1980 as the Birthday Party's pale, skinny, goth-punk Jim Morrison. But the murder ballads that provide this set's title are different, tantalizingly deliberate. Sure, there's plenty of trademark Cave here, but Murder Ballads is a fascinating concept album that uses the narrative ballad form of the English folk tradition to tell of murder: random deaths, passion crimes, and killing sprees, all in one package. Cave clearly thrives in this genre, and he produces some of his sharpest and most facile writing to date. "Song of Joy," a genuinely scary campfire mystery of a murdered family and an unnamed killer, chillingly weaves clues into the lyrics, while "Where the Wild Roses Grow" is a narrative duet in which killer (Cave) and victim (pop star Kylie Minogue) reveal parallel tales. Cave even shows his knack for adaptation on Bob Dylan's "Death Is Not the End": he recontextualizes a song of heavenly comfort into a sort of zombie "We Are the World" (featuring K.Minoguekiss PJ Harveykiss Shane MacGowanheadbang and others) in which "death is not the end" of pain and suffering. Above all, Murder Ballads should be heard as a work of pulp fiction--as sensationally funny as it is harrowing. The already violent traditional song "Stagger Lee" becomes gangsta folk, so ridiculously packed with obscenity and brutality it would make the Geto Boys cringe. And Cave's (unintentional?) point to would-be censors - that bad-ass songs existed long before rappers polluted the airways - should not be missed. - amazon.com HERE

ROBERT PLANT - Sixty Six to Timbuktu (2003)

Despite Robert Plant's fame as Led Zeppelin's frontman, this Englishman has enjoyed a prolific solo career that's kept him moving forward, rather than clutching at the straws of nostalgia. "Sixty Six to Timbuktu", Plant's first solo anthology, spans nearly 40 years of his non-Zep music. Disc One features an overview of eight Plant albums (minus his debut, "Pictures At Eleven"). The material presented here reflects the West Midlands native's restless musical nature, which found him straying far from the heavy rock of his former band. Instead, the solo path found him delving into synth-drenched 1980s dance music (the previously unreleased "Upside Down"), atmospheric modern rock ("Big Log"), and flirtations with cut-and-paste sampling "Tall Cool One." TIMBUKTU is also up-front about Plant's influences, ranging from Tim Hardin ("If I Were a Carpenter") and Tim Buckley ("Song to the Siren") to Phil Phillips and the Twilights ("Sea of Love"). Disc Two is even more intriguing, as it focuses on both Plant's pre-Zep work with long-forgotten outfits like Listen and Band of Joy, along with songs that appeared on tribute albums to Rainer Ptacek, Elvis Presley, and Skip Spence.CD anthology features 35 songs including all the hits along with previously unreleased rarities. - cduniverse.com HERE

OTIS REDDING - The Ultimate Otis Redding (1986)

The title isn't exactly accurate; frankly, given the uniformly high quality of Redding's output before his tragic death at the age of 26--the ultimate Otis would have to be a box set of every single note he ever recorded. On the other hand, he already made an album called THE DICTIONARY OF SOUL (the only other title that seems apt), so let's not quibble. THE ULTIMATE OTIS REDDING is, in fact, an extremely well-chosen one-CD best-of by the greatest soul man of them all, highlighting his immense skills as a songwriter ("I Can't Turn You Loose," "Respect"), interpreter ("Try a Little Tenderness," "Satisfaction"), and singer ("That's How Strong My Love Is," "These Arms of Mine"). '60s R&B doesn't get any better.

Recorded between 1962 & 1967.

WILSON PICKETT - The Very Best Of Wilson Pickett (1993)

The 16-song set The Very Best of Wilson Pickett released in 1993 of course paled in comparison to 1992's two-CD set, A Man and a Half: Best of Wilson Pickett. But even with its short length and dubious song choices, this does put the emphasis back into Pickett's strong offerings. "Land of 1000 Dances" and "In the Midnight Hour" both sound better here than on some lame soundtrack. The propulsive and great "Funky Broadway" has the perfect melody that was well suited to his vocal timbre. The unabashedly loud and Southern "She's Looking Good" proves that so-so Pickett was often stronger than the better-known classics. Although Pickett continued to make hard efforts, this set concentrates on his softer pop side with mixed results. A calmed-down Pickett shows up for such lame covers as "Hey Jude," "Fire and Water," and the lethal "Sugar Sugar." Thankfully, this set includes later Atlantic gems "Engine Number 9," "Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You," and the obdurate and testy "Don't Knock My Love" that all have Pickett back to his senses. The CD version of The Very Best of Wilson Pickett also includes Bobby Womack's "I'm a Midnight Mover." Unlike many compilations of the type, the omissions make this set maddening. Great tracks, "Ninety Nine and a Half," "Soul Dance Number Three," and "She's So Good to Me," should have replaced the waste on here. Despite the often odd choices, this set works well. ~ All Music Guide

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL - The Singles Collection (2009) thumbup

Creedence Clearwater Revival was an American rock band that gained popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a number of successful singles drawn from various albums. The group consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary lyricist John Fogerty, his brother and rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. Their musical style encompassed rock and roll and swamp rock genres. Despite their San Francisco Bay Area origins, they are sometimes also cited as southern rock stylists. CCR's music is still a staple of American and worldwide radio airplay and often figures in various media. The band has sold 26 million albums in the United States alone. CCR was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. - wikipedia

JOE BONAMASSA - North Sea Jazz 2009 [DVD AUDIO RIP]

A unique, historic festival! The first edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival took place in 1976 in the Nederlands Congresgebouw in The Hague. Some numbers in those early days: six venues, three hundred artists and about nine thousand visitors. In this very first festival year internationally renowned jazz legends performed, such as Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, as well as most Dutch avant-garde artists. In the intervening years, the North Sea Jazz Festival has developed into a major international jazz event. Over the years the numbers have increased to: fifteen venues, approximately thirteen hundred artists and a visitors number that varies between sixty-five thousand and seventy thousand every year. Since 2006 the festival has found a new and more spacious location: Ahoy Rotterdam. North Sea Jazz is known all over the world because of the many musical genres it has to offer, ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz, swing, bop, free jazz, fusion, avant-garde jazz and electronic jazz; to blues, gospel, funk, soul, R&B, hip hop, world beat and Latin. All of which are presented during a single weekend: 9, 10 and 11 July 2010. Besides familiar names like Nat Adderley, Erykah Badu, Paul Anka, Steve Coleman, Miles Davis, Candy Dulfer, Ibrahim Ferrer, Ella Fitzgerald, Alicia Keys, Lionel Hampton, Al Jarreau, B.B. King, Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Jamiroquai and The Zawinul Syndicate, the North Sea Jazz Festival also gives young talent a chance to make it on a major stage. Some names of artists who were introduced to a European audience: Shirley Horn, Tania Maria, Roy Hargrove and Rachelle Ferrell. This is what makes North Sea Jazz so unique – a festival where for three days the past, the present and the future of jazz music are presented, all under one roof. - northseajazz.com HERE

BRIAN WILSON - Smile (2004)

The Greatest Album That Never Was finally is. The Beach Boys' uncompleted 1967 album "Smile" has remained the elusive touchstone of Brian Wilson's brilliant, star-crossed career for decades. Artistic Holy Grail and troubling professional Waterloo for Wilson, a tantalizing prism of unfulfilled promise to his loyal cadre of fans, its story has become pop music's Rashomon. Finally completed via spring 2004 recordings with his stellar, longtime touring band (none of the original '60s sessions were used, though they've been recreated here with often stunning authenticity), it's arguably as alien to contemporary pop as it might have seemed in its intended '67 context - even to ears freshly primed by the glories of Pet Sounds. Collaborator Van Dyke Parks's impressionistic, often mischievous lyrics conjure a collage of arcane 19th-century Americana that's equal parts artful ellipse and aloof nostalgia. But wed to Wilson's innovative composition and recording techniques (echoing beat author William Burroughs's fabled cut 'n' paste methodology and exemplified by the modular "Good Vibrations"), the resulting semisuite confections challenge the boundaries of both song and album form, but with an insouciant charm that's as different from Pet Sounds as that landmark was from "I Get Around." Turns out those hypothetical comparisons to Sgt. Pepper's weren't so far off the mark. - amazon.com HERE

SLADE - The Slade Box: A 4 CD Anthology 1969-1991 (2006)

Noddy Holder (guitar and vocals) Jim Lea (bass, violin and keyboards) Dave Hill (lead guitar and glitter) and Don Powell (drums) sold an incredible 50 million records in the seventies, scoring 17 top 20 hits, six number one singles (they were the first group since The Beatles to score three straight number ones on the day of release) and notched 33 top 30 hits from 'Get Down And Get With It' in 1971 to 'Radio Wall of Sound' in l991, based upon their own compositions and a successful live formula of "stomp and deliver". Yet they also remain one of the most astonishingly underestimated rock bands of all time as much of Slade's musical depth and performance was masked by their flamboyant image. It is time now to not just look "wot they dun" but to give credit for what you can hear they "dun" on this comprehensive retrospective and see with your own ears how significant they really were.

NICK LOWE - Party Of One (1990) thumbup

After ending a seven-album association with CBS that was artistically if not commercially fruitful, Nick Lowe is revving his engines for a new start on Reprise. Party of One falls more on the blues-rock than the power-pop side of the ledger, and for good reason: Lowe has reunited with Dave Edmunds, his erstwhile partner in Rockpile, who has always been a roots champion. While the album isn't all serious business, the commitment of Lowe and company to digging in and rocking out isn't frivolous at all. The talented interplay of Lowe's ensemble, which includes guitarist Ry Cooder and keyboardist Paul Carrack, shines brightly on "What's Shakin' on the Hill," a model of tasteful restraint and team playing. This same group of veterans rocks out with abandon in the salty, Rockpile-style blowout "I Ioneygun." All in all, Party of One puts Nick Lowe, the pub rocker with a pure pop heart, back on track. PJ HARVEY - To Bring You My Love (1995) thumbup

To Bring You My Love is a 1995 album by British singer-songwriter PJ Harvey. The album received huge critical acclaim. It was voted as the best album of the year in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll, and was also voted the year's number-one album by publications such as Rolling Stone, The New York Times, People, USA Today, Hot Press and, in "the biggest landslide victory in 15 years", the Los Angeles Times. It featured in Top Ten lists for magazines like Spin, NME, Melody Maker and Mojo, though a contrarian Time list dubbed it the "Worst Album of 1995". The album received two Grammy Award nominations as Best Alternative Music Performance and Best Female Rock Vocal for the single "Down by the Water", and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. SPIN magazine later ranked it at number 3 in a list of the best albums of the 90s. In 2003, the album was ranked number 435 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. AC/DC - Backtracks (2009) thumbup

Throughout their 35 years of recording, AC/DC has had several tracks that have appeared in a myriad of places besides their official studio albums. From singles to soundtracks to promo samplers, their stray songs have been sought after by fans and highly collectible. Now, for the first time, Backtracks collects 12 of the band’s studio rarities and 15 live rarities and presents them in full remastered form to take their place along side the rest of the band’s canon (pun intended…). Includes the highly sought-after “Cold Hearted Man,” “Rock In Peace” and “Borrowed Time”. Also features “Big Gun” – never before on any AC/DC album! - amazon.com

The first disc consists primarily of singles and tracks (not on the U.S. release) starting with the band's first album,"High Voltage". These tracks show the band from their formative (1974) period, and are presented in chronological order, which is helpful,as it shows the growth of this band into the r&r jernaut they became. Not all the tracks are full-on r&r("Love Song" as an example),but by the time listeners hear track four, "R.I.P.(Rock in Peace)",this is the AC/DC familiar to everyone who likes primal,full-on r&r. Even the slower songs (like "Crabsody in Blue") have that dirty, primal sound that the band was so famous for. There are many listeners who feel that the (late) Bon Scott era was a high water mark for the band, and listening to the tracks with Scott, its hard to disagree. Scott's voice is pure, visceral r&r at its best. However, with the addition of Brian Johnson, replacing Scott, the band seemed to solidify into the overwhelming, powerful group that went on to define what r&r is all about.

DISC 1 - Studio Rarities:

01. Stick Around
(Released on Australian-only LP "High Voltage")
02. Love Song
(Released on Australian-only LP "High Voltage")
03. Fling Thing

04. R.I.P. [Rock In Peace]
(Released on Australian-only LP "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap")
05. Carry Me Home
(Released on Australian 7” single “Dog Eat Dog”)
06. Crabsody In Blue
(Released on Australian LP Let There Be Rock)
07. Cold Hearted Man
(First released on Australian 7” single “Rock ‘N’ Roll Damnation”)
08. Snake Eye
(Released on Australian 12” single “Heatseeker”)
09. Borrowed Time
(First released on Australian 12” single “That’s The Way I Wanna Rock ‘N’ Roll”)
10. Down On The Borderline
(Released on Australian “Moneytalks” 7”, 12” and CD single)
11. Big Gun
(First released on World-Wide CD soundtrack “Last Action Hero”)
12. Cyberspace
(First released on Australian CD single “Safe In New York City”)

DISC 2 is filled with what AC/DC was/is all about-live in front of an ecstatic audience. Starting with "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap",the band shows what real deal r&r is all about. The vocals are over the top yet spot on. The sound of the guitars will leave marks in your head. And the rhythm section (the bands secret weapon) keeps everything moving-seemingly propelling the rest of the band to greater heights. This is a band that had not one,but two great vocalists. Never mind which one listeners feel is better-on this collection it doesn't really matter. The pounding, exciting groove laid down by the band,as a whole,is simply devastating. Everyone will have their own favorites from this ("Live Wire","Let There Be Rock",just two examples) collection. Suffice to say,if you don't know what AC/DC is all about-give this a listen. This collection will tell you all you need to know. For fans of the band-pick this up soon-you won't be disappointed. In this day and age of limp reformations of old bands, and new imitators,AC/DC clearly defines what makes great rock & roll. This is timeless music, laid down with no thoughts except to pump out the best music possible.

RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOTT - A Stranger Here (2009)

02. Death Don't Have No Mercy
03. Rambler's Blues
04. Soul Of A Man
05. Richland Women Blues
06. Grinnin' In Your Face
07. New Stranger Blues
08. Falling Down Blues
09. How Long Blues
10. Please Remember Me

Ramblin' Jack Elliott is one of folk music's most enduring legends. An influence on everyone from Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger to the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead, Elliott used his charismatic cowboy image to bring his love of folk music to one generation after another. On "A Stranger Here", Elliott takes on depression era blues songs that have a particular resonance in these turbulent times. With his world scarred voice wrapped around these dark songs of dark days, Elliott has made his masterpiece, an album at once elegiac and defiant, that can stand beside great late career recordings by master singers like Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. With the fantastically sympathetic producer Joe Henry at the board, Ramblin Jack delivers the album his legend has always deserved, and finally proves not just that he is a great folk singer, but a great American singer. - amazon.com

11. Lather
12. Plastic Fantastic Lover
13. Good Shepherd
14. We Can Be Together
15. Volunteers

Its smirky title notwithstanding, The Worst of Jefferson Airplane provides a fine recap of the band's first six albums. Released in 1970 shortly before Marty Balin's initial departure from the band, the album marked not only the end of the decade but, unwittingly, the end of the group's most stable phase in terms of membership. The track selections are evenly divided among the first-generation albums; only the live Bless Its Pointed Little Head is represented by a single entry. Pains were also taken to include songs featuring lead vocalists Balin, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. A few omissions are striking, most notably the chart single "Greasy Heart" and the signature Kantner track, "Wooden Ships." Nevertheless, the songs chosen for this album accurately summarize the distinct feel of each Jefferson Airplane album of the '60s, and thus the disc represents an ideal way to introduce oneself to the band's early, most psychedelic material. - allmusic.com HERE

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD - The Ultimate Collection (1988)

Britain's greatest pop diva, Dusty Springfield was also the finest white soul singer of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries; though a camp icon of glamorous excess in her towering beehive hairdo and panda-eye black mascara, the sultry intimacy and heartbreaking urgency of Springfield's voice transcended image and fashion, embracing everything from lushly orchestrated pop to gritty R&B to disco with unparalleled sophistication and depth. Of all the female British pop artists of the 1960s, she made one of the biggest impressions on the American market. Owing to her distinctive sensual sound, she was one of the most notable white soul artists. HERE

11. Chicago 1987

Throughout Cassandra Wilson's career, jazz critics have been presuming to tell her what to do. Instead, she maintains her own impressive balance among jazz standards, other popular songs, and originals, and among a "jazz" approach, a guitar-based country blues spareness, and art-pop inspired by one of her greatest influences, Joni Mitchell. Here she reminds us that she can bring tremendous freshness to standards. Star pianist Jacky Terrasson makes it almost easy for her. His standout contribution, though, is a tinkling, decidedly late-autumnal solo "Autumn Leaves." Bassist Lonnie Plaxico and percussionist Mino Cinelu contribute impressively on a trap-setless disc, on such numbers as a sad-soul "Tea for Two," and a slowed, bluesy rendition of "Tennessee Waltz". - amazon.com

2005 - Duchess of Coolsville - An Anthology @320
Plenty of Jones's best songs are here, including her only true "hit," the poppy "Chuck E's in Love," and "The Horses," a beautiful ode to her daughter, co-written with Steely Dan's Walter Becker. For the Jones faithful, the third disc is the real revelation, since it includes a slew of previously unreleased live tracks and demos, in addition to collaborations with Dr. John, Bill Frisell, the Blue Nile, and others. Ideal for fans and newcomers alike, DUCHESS OF COOLSVILLE represents the full breadth of Jones's artistry. While it's baffling that there was no Rickie Lee Jones anthology before 2005's DUCHESS OF COOLSVILLE, this remarkable box set more than makes up for the absence. Co-produced by Jones herself, the three-disc Rhino compilation remains in line with the singer/songwriter's idiosyncratic aesthetic in the way it cleverly careens through her career. The first disc alone shifts from 2003's THE EVENING OF MY BEST DAY to 1993's TRAFFIC FROM PARADISE, then later presents a trio of songs from Jones's acclaimed self-titled '79 debut, before landing briefly on her 1997 trip-hop album, GHOSTYHEAD. Yet the set flows wonderfully, revealing the consistent quality of Jones's ever-changing musical vision. - cduniverse.com HERE

2009 - Balm In Gilead @VBR FANTASTIC NEW ALBUM!
When she started work on this album, Rickie Lee Jones was faced with the problem of how to progress from her last, The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard, a highly praised collection in which she reinterpreted Jesus's words. Her solution was to go back to old songs she had never quite finished, such as 1989's Wildgirl. Joined by Ben Harper, Vic Chesnutt and Alison Krauss, Jones opts for an enchanted, breathy delivery that hovers between country and jazz. It's roughly an album of two halves, the first warm and folky, the second soft and shimmering. While the latter section gets a bit droopy, the album as a whole rarely fails to beguile. A sweet duet with Harper, Old Enough, is worth the price of admission alone.

This highly anticipated new release features all-new material by the highly regarded and 2-time Grammy Award winning cult heroine Rickie Lee Jones. Includes guest artists Allison Krauss, Ben Harper, Victoria Williams, Bill Frisell, Jon Brion and Vic Chestnut! HERE

This releases contents was very much a surprise. In that it isn't a continuation of the laidback style Peter Green pursued on his mid- period wilderness solo releases such as "In The Skies". This is more akin in style of early Captain Beefheart "Safe As Milk", and "Mirror Man" era, (not quite as adventurous as the Captain though) Green is singing in a funky/gruff throaty voice which "seems" to be stream of consciousness type lyrics. Fans of swamp rock blues, early Beefheart should enjoy this. Nice, tasty "subtle" guitar interplay by Peter & Mick Green (no relation) throughout. Pleasantly surprised being a fan of all the aforementioned.

NORAH JONES - The Fall (2009)

"The Fall" is the new studio album by American singer-songwriter Norah Jones. Jones' official website has stated that she "has taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris. King also helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer)". Jones has also revealed the cover artwork for the album, which features a portrait by photographer Autumn de Wilde. HERE

THE BIRDS - Collectors' Guide To Rare British Birds (1999)

This is an astonishingly lively and exciting collection, coming from a band that scarcely sold any records in their own time and are known today for their name and their lineup, but not their music. The stuff here is as crunchy and grinding as the early Who material, and if the band's own songwriting isn't as distinctive, the style of the performing is more appealing. The songs range from some hot Ron Wood originals ("You're on My Mind," "Next in Line," "That's All I Need") to covers of obscure Motown songs and Pete Townshend material. Think of the Kinks from "Long Tall Sally," the Yardbirds from "A Certain Girl," or the Who from "The Good's Gone" and that's the dominant sound here - curiously, their cover of Townshend's "Run Run Run" starts out as though it's going to turn into "My Generation." Ali MacKenzie sounded like a punkier Roger Daltrey, and Ron Wood's playing was a delightful compendium of rhythm fills and angular lues licks that must've been devastating on-stage. There's also an unlisted bonus track on the CD - at the risk of spoiling the surprise, it's their number from the 1966 horror film The Deadly Bees, which seems not to have survived as a formal, free-standing studio master.

ROADBLOCK - Live Vibe at BB King's (2009) thumbup

“Classic Licks with a Fresh Vibe” is not just RoadBlock’s mantra – it’s their reality! With their ages spanning more than three generations, or 36 years to be exact, it’s not hard to see how each of them contribute a unique musical imprint that makes them an act you don’t want to miss. When guitar player, JJ “The Hat” Jensen, was born in Marion, North Carolina, Steve G was already married, raising two sons and pounding the keys with a New Wave band on Long Island. Tom-Tom was a young session drummer in Nashville performing at Opryland. Jerry P was still in high school thumping the bass for a hard rock band in east Texas while Rachael, the lead singer, was tinkering away on a toy piano at her pre-school in Croton–on-the-Hudson, New York. Just over 20 years and many musical miles later, RoadBlock converged in Orlando, and became known as one of Central Florida’s favorite jam bands. They began to establish their unique sound by rejuvenating Blues, Motown and Rock hits while hosting open jam sessions throughout the city. The airy resonance of Steve’s "Hammondesque" keys coupled with JJ’s “tasty” slide guitar was breathing new life into those classic songs, but with a new feel. Soon they began to develop their unique sound with collaborations that were driven by Tom-Tom’s synchronous percussion and Jerry P’s silky smooth bass groove. This combination of creative instrumentation was blended with Rachael’s soulful vocal harmonies giving a new twist to the meaning of fresh. RoadBlock - “Classic Licks ~ Fresh Vibe” – don’t miss it! STEVE HACKETT - Out of the Tunnel's Mouth (2009) thumbup

One of the great things about being a fan of Genesis is that each member or former member of the band has a deep solo career to explore. For whatever mood you feel, there is new music to explore. Steve Hackett's latest work, 'Out of the Tunnel's Mouth' on his own Wolfworks label is the newest addition to this ever expanding discography. This album runs through a full gamut of moods, with a lot of darkness and reflections, but yet to these ears the album feels hopeful at its conclusion. The turns that life takes can be unexpected, and can make the reality of life seem paper thin, as Steve sings in 'Fire on the Moon,' but by the end of the disc, you feel as if you are on a voyage somewhere different, exotic, and at its core, resolved to move forward, to take life on your own terms... Are these songs autobiographical? They may be, but to the listener, it is almost irrelevant, as with the best autobiographical, personal songs, the music takes the listener on a trip to reflect on their own experiences and lives, as reflected to them in the music, the experience of another person. The personal experience of the artist, becomes general in the mind of the listener. This creating of these moods, based on Steve's own experiences, then generalize to the hearts and minds of the audience. HERE
