SHAWN PITTMAN - Somthing's Gotta Give (1999)thumbupthumbupthumbup

Shawn was born in Talahina, Oklahoma on October 13th,1974. He was raised in the Norman area just outside of Oklahoma City. "The first music I remember hearing was my Grandmother playing boogie piano and my dad's eight track tapes of Buddy Holly." When he was a teenager he was turned on to Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, Lightnin'Hopkins, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker."I started to listen to Anson Funderburgh and Mike Morgan and knew that I had to get to Texas if I wanted to be able to play that style." At age seventeen Pittman moved to Dallas with his aunt and uncle." I started to learn from Hash Brown and was able to watch guys like Tutu Jones and Jim Suhler." He played as a sideman with Cricket Taylor, Cold Blue Steel, Lou Hampton, The Bramhall Brothers, and Mike Morgan. A short lived band called the Icemen (which later became The Holy Moellers) brought about some unique relationships that have lasted for years. The drummer was Jason Moeller(The Fabulous Thunderbirds) and the other guitarist was Paul Size (The Red Devils). Shawn was able to learn a lot about deeper blues from the both of them. In 1997 he released his first record which was immediately picked up by the newly formed Cannonball Records. Shawn put out two CD'S on that label: 'Burnin' Up' and 'Somethings Gotta Give.' After the summer of 1999 Pittman migrated down to Austin where he has resided ever since. In 2001 Released his third album 'Full Circle' which featured the likes of Double Trouble, The Moeller Bros. and Preston Hubbard. SHAWN PITTMAN - Full Circle (2001)thumbupthumbupthumbup

Texas-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Shawn Pittman attended the Albert King / Jimmie Vaughan school of blues guitar playing. He's not flashy, and he realizes the spaces between the notes are as important as the notes themselves. Tone and melody are just as important, to Pittman's way of thinking, than fast and flashy runs up and down the guitar neck. By the time he was 28, Pittman had recorded and released three albums that showcase mostly his own original material, occasionally reinvigorating the work of others, such as his cover of Bob Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" on his 2001 release, "Full Circle." Her dad was the renowned blues giant John Lee Hooker. The youngest Hooker, Zakiya has gone on to perform with the likes of Etta James, Charles Brown, John Hammond, Taj Mahal and many others. Zakiya has performed internationally in Paris, Amsterdam, London and Switzerland. She has performed at the world famous Fillmore Auditorium, The San Francisco Blues Festival and The Monterey Jazz & Blues Festival. The Blues transcend the family hierarchy and given the honor of the name, Zakiya holds the Blues torch lit with a duet with her father John Lee on Rock These Blues Away. V.A. - 3rd Annual Delta Groove All-Stars Blues Revue: Live At Ground Zero Vol. 1 & 2 (2009)

Call it optimism or just a knack for seizing the day, but Delta Groove label head Randy Chortkoff seldom lets an opportunity pass by without finding a way to make the most of it. With Delta Groove artists figuring prominently in the nominations for the annual Blues Music Awards over the last few years, a large portion of his label roster has ended up in the same place at the same time for the awards ceremonies, so Chortkoff has used the opportunity to put on an annual Delta Groove Showcase. When the Blues Music Awards were moved to Tunica, Mississippi for 2008, the Delta Groove Showcase was moved, appropriately enough, to the heart of the Delta and the home of the blues, Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale. The amazing depth and breadth of the label’s talent was fully on display as Delta Groove took over Ground Zero for what turned out to be one of the biggest blues events in Clarksdale in years. With over twelve hours of world-class live music the result was a blues festival that rivaled many well-known annual events. There was something for just about anyone who loves blues, soul, Americana or any of its offshoots. For those who were fortunate enough to be in Clarksdale that day, it was truly a day to remember. For those who couldn’t be there, Delta Groove is pleased to bring the highlights to you on a two volume set. Take home the magic of the Delta Groove All-Star Blues Revue with two brand new recordings - “Live At Ground Zero, Vol. 1 & 2”, featuring highlights from last year’s 3rd Annual Delta Groove All-Star Blues Revue in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Tracks include fan favorites plus many new songs unavailable anywhere else by Los Fabulocos, The Insomniacs, Jackie Payne/Steve Edmonson Band, The Mannish Boys, Bobby Jones, Finis Tasby, Johnny Dyer, Kid Ramos, Kirk Fletcher, Phillip Walker, Mike Zito and Jason Ricci & New Blood

Little Sammy Davis is one of the last, great living Delta bluesmen. Born in 1928 in Wynona Mississippi, Sammy took up the harmonica by the age of 7. In no time he was entertaining on street corners and traveling medicine shows all over the south. Sammy left Mississippi on the back of a chicken truck and eventually ended up in Florida.

He joined up with many blues greats, including Earl Hooker, Pine Top Perkins, Ike Turner, and Albert King. For awhile, Sammy played in a band with both Earl Hooker and Albert King. However as Sammy puts it, “Unfortunately the band didn’t last but a few weeks,” as the two mighty rivals, Hooker and King eventually came to blows, dissolving the band. All totaled, Sammy spent nine years on the road playing with Earl Hooker. When Sammy finally parted ways with Hooker, he headed to Chicago where he played constantly and shared the stage with many greats, including Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Jimmy Reed. During that time, Sammy would often be called to front Little Walter’s band, “The Mighty Aces” when Walter couldn’t show for a gig. Little Sammy Davis currently lives in Orange County, New York and continues to sing and play harmonica as a member of Levon Helm’s band. He also plays gigs with Fred and his own touring band. As his eightieth birthday approaches, Sammy is happy and healthy as ever and receiving the recognition he so rightfully deserves.

12. Willie Dixon – Outro

Alex Dixon is Willie's grandson, and if the young blues musician's pedigree isn't enough, his training certainly should impress even the hardest of cynics. Alex got his start in the music biz at an early age, playing piano with his grandfather in clubs and at festivals while still a teen, learning the instrument from folks like Lafayette Leake and his uncle Butch Dixon. Alex was taught the mechanics of songwriting by his granddad, and co-wrote some 40 songs with the elder bluesman, including several on the Grammy™ Award-winning, T-Bone Burnett produced 1988 album Hidden Charms. Rising From The Bushes is the debut album from the 33-year-old Dixon and his Alex Dixon Band. A collection of songs that mix blues, R&B, and rock music, Rising From The Bushes also features the vocal talents of Marcy Levy, who has sung behind Eric Clapton and Bob Seger; as well as a finely-tuned band of veteran players, including bassist Gerald Johnson and drummer James Gadsen, one of the most prolific beat-men ever who has played behind talents like Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, B.B. King, and many others. - blues.about.com

Jeff Dale was born and raised on the south side of Chicago and was taught how to play the blues by two itinerant blues musicians from the west side when he was 13 years old. Jeff soon turned to blues songwriting and performing and eventually his travels took him to southern California where he hooked up with the Blue Wave Band, playing with them and releasing two albums of Jeff's original songs until 1988 when Jeff disappeared. Resurfacing 20 years later with a new band of grown ass men called the South Woodlawners, Jeff's blues are more ferocious, thoughtful and fun than ever. Jeff has been blessed to have crossed paths with Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, B.B. King and Albert King and to have played with Lowell Fulson, Pee Wee Crayton, Long Gone Miles, Clifton Chenier and Etta James over the years. The South Woodlawners are an unruly, rag tag group of musicians who feel the less said about them, the better. HERE

Tas Cru is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Quebec, Canada. In Quebecois, Tas Cru means ‘raw potato’, the moniker recognising his ‘raw-edged vocals and peeled-bare slide guitar’. Grizzle n’ Bone is Tas Cru’s third album and comprises thirteen tracks, twelve of which are original compositions. He is backed by Chip Lamson on keyboards, The Slow Happy Boys (Jeremy Walz on guitars, Chris Wroblewski on bass and Andy Hearn on drums) and The Stacked Deck Singers (Jenny Macri, Meaghan Manor and Montana Rodriguez). In addition, Gretchen Koehler plays fiddle on one of the tracks (“The Prophet Of Lynchburg”). This is a very enjoyable, nicely varied album, which gives every indication that Tas Cru is a highy accomplished and entertaining blues performer.

PHIL MANZANERA - Diamond Head (1975)

Phil Manzanera's first post-Roxy foray into solo albums is a terrific all-star affair that still holds up enormously well. Calling on favors from Roxy members present and past, and those from the Cambridge/British art rock scene, Manzanera assembled a supergroup for every song. Robert Wyatt sings Spanish gibberish on the opener "Frontera," a rewrite of his own "Team Spirit." Brian Eno teams up for the sunny "Big Day" and the nonsensical "Miss Shapiro," both of which would not have been out of place on his own early solo albums. John Wetton (of several groups including Family and Asia) sings a duet with Doreen Chanter (of the Chanter Sisters and the Joe Cocker Band), and Bill MacCormick of Matching Mole and Quiet Sun sings his own "Alma," the album's closing ballad. Fans of any of the singers above, not to mention Manzanera, whose party this is, won't be disappointed. - allmusic.com HERE

RY COODER - Get Rhythm (1987)

05. Women Will Rule The World
06. All Shook Up
07. I Can Tell By The Way You Smell
08. Across The Borderline
09. Let's Have A Ball

Ry Cooder was originally best known for his Delta blues & Dust Bowl balladry, later better known for his movie soundtracks & exploration of ethnic music from Cuba, Africa & India. This one is none of the above. It is the closest Ry came to straight-ahead blues-based rock & roll. There are a few resurrected obscurities to be sure, but this shows the side of Ry that is probably the closest to his years as a Rolling Stones sideman. Fans of Ry's more acoustic offerings should like this as well, so long as they are open to his electric, louder side. It sounds little like Boomer's Story or other early works, but the songs & performances are up to the quality from his classic era. - amazon.com

Mike Oldfield shot to fame in the early 70s with his debut album"Tubular Bells"- the maiden release from Richard Branson's Virgin Records. Although no category could be found for this new type of music at that time (it comprised fairly long instrumentals - with thousands of overdubs played exclusively by Oldfield), the critics and public were hugely enthusiastic. Sales proved this: over 16 million copies sold worldwide making"Tubular Bells"Virgin's most successful album to date. Since then, Oldfield has returned to"Tubular Bells"at least twice with a measure of success, signalling that the public's perception of him as the progressive wizard remains strong.

1999 album, his return to guitar-based stylings after the new age legend's recent dance-oriented releases. 10 tracks total including 'Muse', 'Embers' and 'Four Winds'. Every sound on this album, including the drum sounds, were made by live guitars, midi guitar and individual guitar samples.

Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) 20. Girls On The Beach

The Beach Boys were the very embodiment of the 1960s West Coast summer-sun-and-fun ethos, and the "Summer Love Songs" compilation strikes that point home with 20 sun-soaked tunes from the group's heyday. Most of the songs have either been remastered or given a new stereo remix, so even the most familiar tracks, like "California Girls" and "Help Me, Rhonda," have a fresh feel. But in addition to the ubiquitous hits, you also get less-iconic but no less ear-tingling cuts like "Please Let Me Wonder" and "Time to Get Alone," filling out the package nicely. - cduniverse.com

KEN HENSLEY - Running Blind (2002)

Ken Hensley is a keyboard player, guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer best known for his work with Uriah Heep during the 1970s. He wrote or cowrote the majority of Uriah Heep's songs during this period, including such hits as "Look at Yourself", "Lady in Black" (on both of which he also sang lead vocals), "Easy Livin'", "Stealin'" and "Free Me".

With "Running Blind", it's a contrasting and eclectic mix of styles. Ken has deliberately done it this way so as to widen the listeners perspective as to his creative endeavours. This is no more apparent than on the opening piano based stunner 'Overture: La Tristeza Secreta De Un Corazon Gitano'. A glorious ambient piece which the new-agers would drool over. When the melodic rock style is in full swing, the reference point is prime-time Praying Mantis, with that very English sound and approach. Songs like "Its Up To You", "The Final Solution", "Out Of My Control" and "You've Got It (The American Dream)" all veer in this direction. On the other hand, Ken turns full circle and gives us "Finneys Tale" which sounds like a throwback to the sixties folk scene! The lighter than lite "I Close My Eyes" and "A Little Piece Of Me (Julias Song)" continue along the acoustic course. He returns to form with the Uriah Heep flavored "Free Spirit", and a number of other faster paced rockers like "Tell Me", "Movin In" and "Let Me Be Me".

UFO - The Visitor (2009)

Like Saturday Night Live, UFO have had plenty of creative ups and downs over the years but have often demonstrated that one should never give up on them. The veteran hard rockers have recorded some superb albums along the way, and they have recorded some weak, lackluster albums, too. But even when they let their followers down on occasion, UFO have had a way of bouncing back and giving those followers new reasons to be optimistic. The Visitor, it turns out, is a respectable 40th anniversary present from UFO, who were formed in 1969 and remained active 40 years later in 2009. This 2009 release finds two members of the original 1969 lineup (lead singer Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker) joined by keyboardist/guitarist Paul Raymond (a 1976 arrival) and guitarist Vinnie Moore, who didn't come on board until the 2000s; regrettably, bassist Pete Way (another original member going back to 1969) was unable to participate due to health problems. Some Michael Schenker devotees will no doubt refuse to give this album a chance because the former Scorpions/MSG guitarist isn't on board, but truth be told, UFO made some valuable contributions to hard rock during their pre-Schenker days and continued to make them after his departure. The Visitor is perhaps a somewhat misleading title for this 42-minute CD because it has a bit of a space rock connotation despite the fact that there isn't a drop of space rock to be found here; regardless, The Visitor offers a worthwhile dose of '70s-minded hard rock - and even though "Hell Driver," "Stranger in Town," and other bluesy offerings aren't in a class with '70s favorites like "Doctor, Doctor," "Rock Bottom," and "Lights Out," they are enjoyable nonetheless. The Visitor won't go down in history as one of UFO's essential albums, but longtime fans - at least the ones who are open to the possibility of hearing a Schenker-less lineup - will find it to be a solid 40th anniversary present from these hard rock survivors. ~ All Music Guide HERE

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Doctors, Professors Kings & Queens: The Big Ol' Box of New Orleans (2004)

America's most musical city is a daunting topic for any collection, even a four-disc box set. From Dixieland, jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll, R&B, and funk to the Francophone world of swamp pop, Cajun, and zydeco to the folk musics of vodou and the Mardi Gras Indians, the Crescent City has a number of musical histories to tell. Fortunately, it also supplies a homegrown metaphor: gumbo. That savory stew of disparate ingredients is mirrored in the magpie assortment of music - old, new, Cajun, and very blue - on parade here. Any New Orleans cook will tell you that the secret to gumbo is the roux, the concentrated base of the dish, and compiler Chuck Taggart (who supplies enlightening track-by-track notes) gets that base just right. You couldn't have a New Orleans box without Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Professor Longhair, Ernie K. Doe, Fats Domino, and the Meters - and they're all here. Of course, they're mostly limited to a track or two a piece, but that's the nature of a set like this. Spice-wise, this set swings toward the jazzy sounds of black New Orleans, leaving more rural Cajun numbers as palate-cleansers, and this, too, is as it should be, popular conceptions of the Big Easy to the contrary. The Big Ol' Box endeavors to be something of a not-for-tourists guide - it hits the expected sites but also the names that fill the weekly listings of OffBeat, the local music bible. John Cleary, Galactic, the Iguanas, Anders Osborne, even Fredy Omar, the city's resident salsa bandleader, have their moment. The contrast between classic material from Alan Toussaint and Ernie K-Doe and some lighter-weight contemporary interpretations is more often than not felicitous, with only a few clunkers coming from the current generation (James Booker's "Classified" is NOLA blues at its most derivative). But there's so much love in the collection - a hilarious list of "why we love New Orleans" is a highlight of the liner notes - that it's easy to overlook even these. OTIS TAYLOR - Recapturing The Banjo (2008)

As the title indicates, this release attempts to "recapture the banjo" as an integral part of the African-American musical tradition from its more familiar associations with country radio appropriations of bluegrass and folk music. Far from an exercise in academic anachronism or nostalgic purity, the results bristle with vitality. Among the banjo buddies recruited by bluesman Taylor are kindred spirits Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Keb' Mo'--all of whom sing and write material for the album-along with virtuosic banjoist Don Vappie. Amid the inspired arrangements, the harmonious call-and-response vocals of Taylor's daughter, Cassie, and the judicious employment of Ron Miles' cornet contribute to a musical interplay that is rooted in time and place-the deep South, in general, and New Orleans in particular--but not confined by them. Taylor's rendition of "Hey Joe" evokes an aura of Jimi Hendrix, while "Five Hundred Roses" and "Ten Million Slaves" channel the spirit of John Lee Hooker. "Les Ognons" transforms a Haitian children's song into a communal romp, and "Absinthe" conjures musical madness that predates psychedelia. The rendition of "Walk Right In" restores the jug-band raucousness to a song that has been a pop hit and a commercial staple. - amazon.com

ERIC BIBB - Get Onboard (2008)

Eric Bibb resides right outside of the crossroads where blues, folk, and gospel meet. His songs are elevating but not preachy, gritty but not nasty. It's a congenial music, as if to say that it may be the blues but it doesn't have to be a bummer. And it's a moralistic music, but its meaningful message is never delivered in a saccharine manner. Slide guitars and harmonicas wail, choirs holler, horns blare, tambourines get shaken, steel guitars twang, strings soothe, Wurlitzers whirl, and Bibb, acoustic guitar in hand, keeps 'em all honest with his earthy, Everyman songs. Like Taj Mahal, who has guested on Bibb's recordings, Bibb is in love with the roots of Americana, but, again like Taj, there's nothing self-conscious or stylized about his approach. On the soul ballad "If Our Hearts Ain't in It," which features Bonnie Raitt on slide guitar, he castigates phony religiosity, but even then it's not a condemnation: "We can fall down on our knees, shout 'Hallelujah, my soul is saved!'/But if our hearts ain't in it, ain't nothin' much is gonna change." "Stayed on Freedom," just Bibb on vocal and acoustic with Grant Dermody blowing harp, is a traditional spiritual turned civil rights anthem that delivers the simplest truth in a simple package, and "Pockets" is a country blues love tune set to an easygoing shuffle. A particular highlight is the deep blues "Conversation," a duet with the vocalist Ruthie Foster. A slow builder, it begins sparsely but subtly intensifies as Dermody's harmonica and a trio of trombone, saxophone, and trumpet assert themselves into the tune. Best of all, perhaps, is the opener, "Spirit I Am," a rousing, thumping, oversized shout-out to all that is good and right in a world that, more and more, has us all wondering what's real and what isn't and where we all fit in. ~ All Music Guide HERE

Following up on his 2005 release Birthright, the CD that was embraced by the music world as one of the most important blues records of the year, James Blood Ulmer is releasing Bad Blood In The City on May 2007. Bad Blood In The City contains eleven songs, five of which are Ulmer originals. The sessions start with "Survivors of the Hurricane" performing a complex painting of the disaster that was Katrina. With a Clavinet grove and Vernon Reid's explosive guitar work matching Ulmer's biting lyrics "..they called themselves heroes for doing their jobs." This is a masterpiece! James Blood Ulmer has always been a critic’s dream: an avant-garde guitarist who is also an authentic blues man. He’s scorched a whole lot of strings in his time, and howled out so many imprecations against the Man that on uptempo numbers his voice pretty much doesn’t exist anymore.

contributions to R&B and rock & roll (he claims his "Rocket 88" was the first rock-&-roll record) and his violence toward his former wife, the singer Tina Turner. But this set is evidence that, after more than six decades as a musician, he's still more than capable of producing a compelling collection of down-and-dirty blues and funk. Starting with the deep groove of "Gimme Back My Wig" and a nod to his roots on the jump blues of "Caledonia," Turner also revisits "A Love Like Yours," which he and Tina first recorded in 1966 with Phil Spector. And his unapologetic, gospel-tinged "Jesus Loves Me" points an accusing finger back at his unforgiving critics. On Risin’ with the Blues, the R&B icon and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer takes the intensity level up with typically slashing-stinging guitar work, rollicking boogie-woogie piano flourishes, and some of the nastiest, rawest, most potent vocals he’s ever summoned up in a fabled career that dates back more than fifty years.

JOAN ARMATRADING - Gold (2005)

Born on the island of St. Kitts but raised in England, singer/songwriter/guitarist Joan Armatrading was a unique presence in the 1970s British music. While Armatrading's bold, nuanced singing nodded to her West Indies background, her potent, often-restless folk-rock incorporated elements of funk, jazz, and chamber-pop. The two-disc GOLD collection offers up an excellent sampler of Armatrading's albums from '75 (BACK TO THE NIGHT) to '83 (THE KEY), including the chiming, suite-like "Cool Blue Stole My Heart;" the funky, soulful "Show Some Emotion;" and the rocked-out, New Wave-flavored "Me Myself I." (In fact, almost every track from ME MYSELF I, helmed by Blondie producer Richard Gottehrer, is presented here.) A direct link between Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, Armatrading is a fascinating, dynamic, and sorely underrated performer, who is well-served by this 43-track compilation. - CDUniverse.com HERE

05. Out of Touch
06. Are You Down

08. Reason to Cry
09. Get Right With God
10. Bus to Baton Rouge
11. Broken Butterflies

"Get Right With God" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

Few artists in recent memory have been able to wring more from less than Lucinda Williams. The hauntingly beautiful, wistful, and often breathtaking Essence is another case in point of how far raw emotion and honesty can carry an artist. Williams's singing is at its paralyzing best throughout 11 bare originals, an incredibly affecting vocal performance by a woman who was not blessed with exceptional tone, range, or pitch. Throughout, her voice is incredibly naked, vulnerable, and wrought with feeling. "Blue" and "Broken Butterflies" are gorgeous anti-lullabies whose simple melodies belie their poignant ruminations. The title track is a sultry and susceptible sex-as-drug come-on while "Reason to Cry" has all the hallmarks of a classic country lament. The only departure from the subdued mood is "Get Right with God," a rousing gospel tune that practically begs for salvation through punishment and is the rare acknowledgement of a world beyond Williams's own fears and desires. More meditative than the personal narratives found on Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Essence is ultimately more powerful. Williams wallows in sorrow and weakness, and the result is moving and disarming.

LEONARD COHEN - The Essential (2002)

The tracks on this two-CD, 31-song anthology, spanning Cohen's career from his 1967 debut album through 2002's Ten New Songs, were chosen by Cohen himself. It could thus be regarded as an accurate mirror of how Cohen sees his own career path and catalog highlights. And there are many of the songs you would expect from any decent Cohen retrospective: "Suzanne," "Sisters of Mercy," "So Long Marianne," "Bird on a Wire," "Famous Blue Raincoat," and "I'm You're Man," for instance. Still, the balance and selection isn't ideal. There's just one song ("Famous Blue Raincoat") from Songs of Love and Hate, and no songs at all from Death of a Ladies Man. Cohen's 1988-2002 period is arguably overrepresented, with about half of the package's tunes dating from that era. And because his later period is so prominently featured, most listeners won't be able to get around the fact that his voice declined in expressive range in the later years, and his material was less striking than his best early songs. Still, for those who've enjoyed Cohen all along, it's a good dose of much of his better work, and certainly doesn't skimp on the running time, with each of the discs lasting 78 minutes. - allmusic.com HERE

"Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?" is the debut album by Chris Rea, released in 1978.The first single lifted from the album, "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", is arguably Rea's best known song, and remains his biggest hit in the United States, peaking at number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching number one on the Adult Contemporary Singles chart. "Fool (If You Think It's Over)" was nominated for a "Song of the Year" Grammy, losing out to Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are". Unlike most of Rea's other singles, "Fool..." was not a great success on the UK Singles Chart, failing to chart on its first release and only reaching number thirty when re-released in early 1979 to capitalise on its U.S. success. This success was also helped by being played extensively by Radio Caroline, as it was dedicated to the British Home Office, who were trying to put the station off the air. The name in the album "Benny Santini" was rumoured to have been a stage name Rea considered before he settled on his own name.

Throughout his career, Johnny Cash recorded many gospel albums as well as including gospel numbers on his mainstream releases. This album has taken some of the best music from that collection and put it into one spot for the enjoyment of all. Much of the music included is out of print and very hard to find. If you are a Cash fan and/or a fan of really good reflective gospel music this is an album you have to have.

This is a Legacy and Sony BMG release of a collection of gospel tunes recorded by Johnny Cash over the span of his career. Much of it was on albums that are no longer in print and very hard to find. There are also three songs on the 24 track album that were previously unreleased. "It Is No Secret (What God Can Do)," "My Ship Will Sail" and "How Great Thou Art." In many of the songs you can hear what appears to be The Carter Family doing background vocals, but that is only confirmed in the liner notes for a few of the songs, but speculated on others.

Rita Chiarelli is a Canadian blues singer. She has been dubbed "the goddess of Canadian blues" by CBC Radio One's Shelagh Rogers. Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Chiarelli began performing in Ronnie Hawkins' band in the early 1980s. She subsequently spent several years in Italy. When she returned to Canada, she quickly attracted the attention of film director Bruce McDonald, who included her "Have You Seen My Shoes?" on the soundtrack to his 1989 film Roadkill. Chiarelli and Colin Linden subsequently recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" for McDonald's 1991 film Highway 61, and Chiarelli released her debut album the following year on Stony Plain Records.

"Last Train To San Antone" and "Got To See Her Tonight" are the best tracks, followed by "Bullet In The Sky" and "Like A Hot Tomato". Also "Lost My Love" and "Promised Land" are good songs. This album has a good balance between blues and rock. Definitely recommended. - amazon.com

UFO - Headstone: The Best Of UFO (1983)

The double LP Headstone: The Best of UFO (Chrysalis CTY 1437), issued in 1983, is a curious collection of tracks from UFO, that also includes songs from other bands that members of UFO also participated in. Issued as a tribute, at a time when the once high flyin' group was considered grounded for good, Headstone merely serves as a place-in-time compilation, as Phil Mogg has held the UFO ship together despite more ups and downs than Spinal Tap could ever dream of. While several stellar studio tracks from UFO are included on the two album set, such as the galloping "Doctor Doctor", the raging "Rock Bottom", and "Shoot Shoot", plus a pair of big seventie's arena rock anthems, "Only You Can Rock Me" and "Too Hot to Handle", the prime source of hot action is plastered on side four of the collection. Five previously unreleased UFO live numbers are featured, which were recorded at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon. The concert material is pulled from the Making Contact tour, during April of 1983. Included is a hot version of the pulsating "Electric Phase", as well as the built-for-the-stage "We Belong to the Night".

The album's title refers to the impromptu, sometimes late-night, jam sessions pursued by touring musicians when on the road. In the liner notes, Delaney dedicates the album to "My mom who sang alto." Bonnie wrote "If this album can make one person feel half of what I felt on this session, then I am happy. It is to all of you with love." The album reached #65 on the Billboard album chart, and includes Delaney and Bonnie's biggest chart single, "Never Ending Song of Love," which peaked at #13. Other standout tracks include "Long Road Ahead," "Sing My Way Home," and "Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad."

01. Lay Me Down
02. You Make Me Feel So Good

"Child In Time" is an album by British jazz-rock fusion band Ian Gillan Band, released in 1976. The album took its title from the Deep Purple song "Child in Time", a version of which appears on side two of the LP. This was Ian Gillan's first release after leaving Deep Purple, and also features his former Deep Purple colleague Roger Glover. Although not credited with playing on the album, Dave Wintour (bass player), Andy Steele (drummer) and Bernie Holland (guitarist), are listed among the songs' composers. In fact, Gillan had been recording demo tapes with non-Deep Purple material as early as 1972, and much of the Child In Time material was taken from the period September 1972 to April 1974. The album was recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich between December 1975 and January 1976 and mixed at Mountain Studio in Montreux. One single was released from the album, "You Make Me Feel So Good"/"Shame" in the UK in July 1976, on the Oyster label. Although Ian Gillan Band went on to produce material more suited to their jazz-rock label, this first album has much more of a harder rhythm and blues style.

Recorded live at John Jay College Of Criminal Justice, Brooklyn, New York on December 14, 2000.

K.D. Lang's first live album finds this amazingly talented artist and her eight-piece band taking a career-spanning tour through her genre-bending repertoire. Lang isn't shy about paying tribute to her heroes as she delivers an impressive range of covers by Roy Orbison ("Crying"), Patsy Cline ("Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray"), Peggy Lee ("Don't Smoke in Bed"), and Ella Fitzgerald ("Black Coffee"). When this Canadian chanteuse isn't deftly handling these interpretations, she's knee-deep in original material that's just as moving, particularly when rendered by such a crack band. Among the many highlights are the delicate vulnerability of "Wash Me Clean" (highlighted by Greg Leisz's crying pedal steel), the loping humor of the semi-autobiographical "Big Boned Gal," and the irresistible hit "Miss Chatelaine" with its exuberant squeezebox and trilling guitar bringing to mind images of a romantic bistro. LIVE is a gem by a performer whose meandering creative path continues to yield gold.

CEPHAS & WIGGINS - Richmond Blues (2008)

TRACKS:
01. Richmond Blues 02. Going to the River 03. Keep Your Hands Off My Baby 04. Black Rat Swing 05. Mamie 06. Crow Jane 07. Dog Days of August 08. John Henry 09. Pigmeat Crave 10. Prison Bound Blues 11. Key to the Highway 12. Going Down the Road Feeling Bad 13. Careless Love 14. Great Change 15. Reno Factor 16. Step It Up and Go

In Richmond Blues, guitarist-singer John Cephas and his harmonica-player partner Phil Wiggins personify the century-old blues sound of the Piedmont, the Appalachian foothills running from Richmond to Atlanta. Drawing from roots of ragtime, ballads, country, old-time string band, rhythm and blues, and more, Richmond Blues is a musical roadmap of the Virginia Piedmont tradition. While Cephas calls it "part of my heritage, part of my soul," their sound is at the same time distinctly modern, a kind of "urban acoustic blues." - amazon.com HERE

GUY DAVIS - Skunkmello (2006) & Sweetheart Like You (2009) thumbupthumbupthumbup

21st Century acoustic bluesman Guy Davis' "Sweetheart Like You" is the highly anticipated follow-up to the much-lauded "Skunkmello", which earned him 3 Blues Award nominations and a rare 5-star review in the jazz/blues magazine DownBeat. Produced by long-time collaborator John Platania (Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Chip Taylor), it is a classic mix of acoustic blues and soulful originals and his most personal album yet. Starting off with his unique take on the Bob Dylan classic "Sweetheart Like You," Davis takes us back to his home with songs about love, family and the hard paths life takes. He includes unique takes on blues classics like Muddy Waters' "Can't Be Satisfied" and Lead Belly's "Follow Me Down." Displaying more than his blues roots, "Sweetheart Like You" features some of Guy's finest songwriting with tunes that are alternately humorous and heartbreaking, from the playful "Slo Motion Daddy," to the powerful "Angels Are Calling." Deeply personal, "Words to My Mama's Song" was inspired by his own mother, activist and actress Ruby Dee. "My mother is a remarkable woman. So much of this song is her voice inside of my head," Guy says. "There's also a little bit of her brother Edward's spirit in that composition." Certainly a familial number, "Words to My Mama's Song" features Guy's son Martial contributing spoken word and funky vocal percussion. It captures the album's theme of hope and resilience despite heartache and hard times. That spirit is never more present than on the album's final moving number "Ain't Goin' Down."

Cuby & the Blizzards are a Dutch blues group that started in 1964. Right from the start they were a big hit in the Netherlands. In 1967 they toured with Van Morrison (in lieu of his band Them), played with Eddie Boyd, scored a hit with Window of my Eyes and received an Edison award. That year, John Mayall stayed at their farm and the next year they regularly played with the 'king of British blues' Alexis Korner. The line-up of the band changed regularly, but founders Harry Muskee (vocals) and Eelco Gelling (guitar) remained at the core of the band, despite regular unsuccessful attempts to form other bands. Herman Brood was the pianist shortly in 1967 (which kick-started his career) and again in 1976. The spelling of the name varies, with 'Cuby' also written as 'QB' and the ampersand (&) also written as 'and' or '+' and the 'and sometimes left out. The spelling 'Cuby + Blizzards' was used on the first albums.

With "Heartless", their 4th independent release, BJ Allen & Blue Voodoo keep on rockin’ the blues, featuring more new music with 8 original tunes written by either JP Hurd or Jerry Fuller, and 3 cover tunes that are favorites from the band’s live set. Laying the foundation are David Daniels on drums and JP Hurd on bass. This rhythm section is tighter than a tick on a hound-dog’s you-know-what! With bold bass lines and a steady groove, these boys will rock ya all night long! JP also blows harp and writes some of the band’s original material. Jerry Fuller handles the guitar licks with flair. Also contributing as a writer and doing double duty on the keyboards, Jerry brings the zing to all the band’s arrangements, whether covers of blues favorites or the band’s original tunes. Fronting this group is vocalist, BJ Allen, who employs a dynamic range of styles. At once sweet, sultry, sassin', sexy – and always right on the money - BJ puts her heart and soul into every song and you can take that to the bank!

MUDDY WATERS - Authorized Bootleg - Live at the Fillmore Auditorium - San Francisco Nov 04-06 1966 (2009)

Part of Universal's Authorized Bootleg series, this disc combines 15 highlights from Muddy Waters' multi-night stint at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium in November 1966. These shows may have been held at a famous rock venue but these recordings have more in common with the performances Muddy gave on the blues and folk festival circuit in the mid-'60s. Muddy and the band are tight and professional, running through numbers they've played many times - of the 15 tracks, "Forty Days and Forty Nights," "Hoochie Coochie Man," "Rock Me," "Baby Please Don't Go" are all repeated - and they don't push, they're so relaxed they even let the tempo almost drag at times. This means there's not much kinetic energy here, but it's not bland either: Muddy is always a powerful, compelling center and there's some prickly ice-pick thin guitar popping up in unexpected places. The professionalism keeps the two sets here enjoyable but it's those slight surprises that make this worthwhile. ~ All Music Guide

Her 2005 acclaimed release, "I've Got My Own Hell To Raise", brought well-deserved recognition to this R&B maverick who's been recording since the early 60s. Now comes the almost autobiographical "Scene Of The Crime". To make music this raw and direct, Bettye enlisted "dirty south" rockers The Drive By Truckers as her backup band. With swampy guitars, slippery Wurlitzer piano, and a driving backline, this record conjures up the spirit of great loose 70s bands like the Faces while offering Bettye an urgent, vital setting for her razor-sharp vocals. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL, where she recorded "Child Of The Seventies" in 1972 - a masterpiece that was shelved then released 30 years later. Returning to Muscle Shoals was like returning to the scene of a crime; thus the album title, and the intense, personal music within. - amazon.com HERE

Mia Vermillion, emerging Pacific Northwest blues singer, songwriter and musician, has released her debut CD titled Alone Together With the Blues. The record features dobro and slide guitar great Orville Johnson. Orville has recorded several of his own albums, including the critically acclaimed “Slide and Joy.” Their music together highlights a well-matched styling between Mia’s sultry, earthy vocal sway and Johnson’s emotive guitar mastery. An independent artist, Mia has put together a truly unmarked sound. As Mia will characterize her style, it’s all about experiences and the path one walks. "My songs and song choices come from my personal knowledge and life’s experiences: the inner and outer workings of relationships, the joy of music and life, and the huge satisfaction of recognizing and providing feminine value and perspective in it all.” HERE

The latest CD "Grace & Grit" was released in September of 2008 and was produced by Philadelphia's Chris Arms. The CD features Deb's original music, a cover of "Hallelujah I love him so" one of her favorite Ray Charles songs and a few a capella snippets by Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin who have all been strong musical influences. One of the goals of this record was to go for a more live sound and capture the energy and spontaneity that live performance can bring. Thus all the vocal tracks were recorded live in the studio. "Grace and Grit" has a strong blues base but encoporates gospel, soul, rock and jazz elements and thematically the material ranges widely from songs about being a single mother trying to make it America on "Food on the Table" to the humorous "No Taxi Driver" about receiving too many wrong number phone calls from people looking for a taxi. YUSUF CAT STEVENS - Roadsinger (To Warm You Through The Night) [2009]

01. Welcome Home
02. Thinking 'Bout You
03. Everytime I Dream
04. The Rain
05. World O' Darkness
06. To Be What You Must
07. This Glass World
08. Roadsinger
09. All Kinds Of Roses
10. Dream On (Until...)
11. Shamsia

The man born Steven Georgiou sounds here more like his old showbiz self, Cat Stevens. The vocal pipes are rustier, but the twisting melodies and earnest vocals are cut from the same mould as Tea For the Tillerman. To confirm a sense of a circle completed comes a 1974 song, The Rain, that melds easily into a well-produced mix, rich in guitars, discreet strings and the occasional sax toot. It's all a long stride on from the hesitant return of 2006's An Other Cup. But if you're hoping for romantic, joyous 1970's Cat, forget it. Instead, we are obliged to trudge through heavy-handed allegories in which the humble pilgrim Yusuf is on the road, beset by stern guards, while the world about him rumbles into menacing darkness – that word is everywhere – against which the frail light of faith falteringly holds. Moments of delight, such as Thinking About You, are few, though Boots and Sand, about Yusuf being refused entry to the US, labours hard to inject levity.

Some of his beleaguered mood can be explained by his projected musical, Moonshadow, where the world lies in permanent darkness. To Be What You Are and This Glass World clearly belong to the project. Will Moonshadow include the simple joy of Morning Has Broken or the lusty Mona Bone Jakon ? You'll get long odds. Frown on. - guardian.co.uk

Delaney Bramlett (1939– 2008) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. Delaney Bramlett's musical history spans three decades making it difficult to pinpoint in such a short space his contributions to the world of music. Known as a great songwriter, singer and musician, he has also been a mentor to some of the very best: Eric Clapton, George Harrison, J.J. Cale and Bobby Whitlock to name just a few.

A tremendous collection of self-penned and co-written songs (plus Sam Cooke's "Change Gonna Come") that make a worthy album to mark the end of a life spent making truely great music. Delaney goes back close to the roots for his interpretaion of the blues, with the distinctive gospel ingredient that helped make his sound so special.
