BLAZE FOLEY - Live At The Austin Outhouse (1999)

12. Oooh Love

If you've ever pondered the identity of Lucinda Williams' "Drunken Angel," wondered who made even Townes Van Zandt feel blue, or what songwriter Merle Haggard would turn to in a moment of spiritual crisis, the answer is simple: Blaze Foley - all of the above.

Foley, a disparate voice even in the iconoclastic circles of Austin, wasn't much known outside of the handful of artists who remember him in their songs and deeds. But before his murder in 1989 at 39, Foley was embraced in Austin for a heart as large as his frame, a soul as deep as his voice and for a self-fulfilling poverty that led him to be remembered as much for his duct-taped shoes as his songs. It's no surprise that Foley died in another losing battle: gunned down while trying to protect an elderly friend's government pension checks.

Thanks to Lost Arts Records' release,"Live at the Austin Outhouse," the world can now hear the gift of this songwriter's soul. The first published recordings of Blaze Foley, taped just four weeks before his death, it captures the simplicity and honesty and of Foley's artistry. From the achingly simple "If I Could Fly" (which Haggard performed for Tammy Wynette's memorial service), to the haunting loneliness of "Picture Cards Can't Picture You," the 12 cuts on this CD capture the forsaken beauty of Foley's music - warts and all - as Foley would only want it. Performed with a "borrowed guitar" and recorded before an audience so sparse one can hear every aside, here's thanking Lost Art Records for finally allowing that audience to swell.

PETER GREEN - The Anthology (2008)

Peter Green is a British blues-rock guitarist and founder of the band Fleetwood Mac. A figurehead in the British blues movement, Green inspired B. B. King to say, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats." Apart from his solo work in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he contributed to "Rattlesnake Shake" and "Super Brains" on Mick Fleetwood's solo album, The Visitor, and recorded various sessions with a number of other musicians. Despite some attempts by Gibson at a German trade show to start talks about producing a Peter Green signature Les Paul, Peter's instrument of choice at this time was in fact a Gibson 'Howard Roberts' Fusion, very often seen accompanying him on stage in recent years. A 1990s comeback saw Green form the Peter Green Splinter Group, with the assistance of fellow musicians including Nigel Watson and Cozy Powell. The Splinter Group released nine albums between 1997 and 2004. It was in the latter part of this period that he picked up a black Gibson Les Paul again. Green signed and sold this Les Paul, which had been tweaked for Peter to sound like the famous 'green burst' and is now owned by a UK enthusiast. A tour was cancelled and recording of a new studio album stopped in early 2004, when Green left the band and moved to Sweden. Shortly thereafter he joined The British Blues All Stars, but their tour in 2005 was also cancelled. Green has said that the medication he takes to treat his psychological problems makes it hard for him to concentrate and saps his desire to pick up a guitar; whether there will be any more public ventures remains to be seen.

Peter Green - The Anthology is an exciting 4CD retrospective - set for UK release 27 October, 2008 - telling the story of a British guitar legend and blues institution. The set contains essential Peter Green music drawn from all stages of his career. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

RONNIE EARL AND THE BROADCASTERS - Now My Soul (2004)

Ronnie Earl is an oddity in the blues world - a skilled technician and passionate player equally conversant in several styles of blues and jazz instrumentation, but capable of rocking the house when the moment calls for such. Earl made his bones as a guitarist with the legendary Rhode Island outfit Roomful Of Blues, spending eight years on the road with the band and recording a pair of excellent albums during his tenure. The itch to record his own stuff led to a parallel career as a solo artist and as frontman for the largely instrumental Broadcasters. Twenty years after leaving Roomful of Blues, and almost as many albums later, Earl has delivered one of his best efforts with Now My Soul. The album features what I call "big band blues," the kind of one-size-fits-all R&B revue popularized by the Blues Brothers films. Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters easily blend Chicago-styled blues with swinging R&B, jump-blues, and red-hot jazz licks influenced more by John Coltrane than by Muddy Waters, creating a free-wheeling instant party atmosphere. 1, 2.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Alligator Records 35 X 35 (2006)

After 35 years and the release of over 2800 contemporary blues tracks, it's safe to say that Bruce Iglauer's Alligator Records is the world's premier blues label, particularly if sheer numbers are factored in, and while the label's releases tend to sound mind-numbingly similar sometimes, this two-disc overview of Alligator's history shows how much raw vitality the blues still has in its tank. Alligator Records 35X35, arranged chronologically and featuring a selection drawn from each of the artist's debut albums with Alligator, gets rolling right where it all began, with Hound Dog Taylor's "She's Gone" from 1971, and marches through to 2004, closing the second disc with a stunning version of "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" (here called "A Dying Man's Plea") by the great Mavis Staples, who makes clear the deep affinity of gospel to the blues, or vice versa, since the two forms philosophically complete each other, the way Saturday marches straight into Sunday. In between these two tracks are a whole lot of barnburning moments, including the bayou blues of Lonnie Brooks on "Voodoo Daddy" from 1979, a selection from Professor Longhair's final session (1980's "In the Wee Wee Hours"), Lonnie Mack and Stevie Ray Vaughan trading guitar solos on "Satisfy Suzie" from 1985, and Roy Buchanan's jaw-dropping electric guitar intro to "When a Guitar Plays the Blues," also from 1985. There is variety here, too, with C.J. Chenier's zydeco blues romp "Bad Luck" from 1995, Corey Harris' acoustic slide guitar reenactment of Blind Willie Johnson's classic "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning" (also from 1995) and the Holmes Brothers' wonderful blend of gospel, blues, and R&B on "Speaking in Tongues" from 2001. All of this adds up to a completely satisfying set, and makes a fitting testament to Alligator's decades-long devotion to the preservation of the modern blues form. - All Music Guide 1, 2, 3.

From 1969 to 1975 the Faces - Rod Stewart, Ian McLagan, Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones - played their loose and joyful blues and soul-inflected rock 'n' roll with reckless abandon, consummate skill, and immeasurable charm. For those few years they were arguably the greatest band on the planet, and their influence has resonated ever since through the music of countless acts, from the Sex Pistols to The Replacements to The Black Crowes, and on and on. After the Faces dissolved in 1975, Stewart went on to solo superstardom, Wood to the Stones, Jones to The Who, McLagan to world - class session work and his own recordings, and Lane to acclaimed solo projects before he succumbed to multiple sclerosis in 1997. Greater than the sum of its parts, the Faces made now - immortal music for which there will never, ever be a last call.

Collecting various songs and demo tapes that Willie Nelson had recorded since the early 1960s, FOREVER GOLD captures the outlaw country artist at his bleakest, featuring songs with titles like "No Tomorrow in Sight," "Suffer in Silence," and "You Wouldn't Cross the Street to Say Goodbye." "What Can You Do To Me Now," one of a batch of songs the artist wrote in just one drug and booze-sodden night in the early '70s, is particularly tortured, while "Wastin' Time" at least has the benefit of a halfway-jaunty traditional country backing, and "Home Is Where You're Happy" falls into the realm of conventional country tearjerker.

ROY BUCHANAN - A Street Called Straight (1976)

After an uneven four-year/five-LP deal with Polydor, Roy Buchanan (guitar/vocals) linked up with Atlantic Records for his next trio of long-players, commencing with A Street Called Straight (1976). Under the direction of Arif Mardin, and sporting the same combo that he had been using during his practically incessant touring, this disc is infinitely stronger than his previous non-live effort, In the Beginning (1974). The core unit of John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals), are augmented by a host of all-stars such as Andy Newmark (drums), Will Lee (bass), Billy Cobham (percussion), the Brecker Brothers horn section, and vocals from former Rascals' member Eddie Brigati. Perhaps Mardin's mid-'70s success, creating soul and funk-oriented platters, encouraged him to take the artist in a similar course. Buchanan definitely sounds not only in his element throughout this title , but he rises to the occasion, providing some of his most incendiary licks and aggressive instrumental interaction in a studio setting. This also manifests itself with a bounty of self-penned compositions. Rather than including one or two of his own pieces in an album consisting of primarily cover material, nine of the 11 cuts are, at the very least, co-written by Buchanan. As always however, it is his unmistakable, if not singular fretwork that truly coalesces A Street Called Straight. The frenetic opening whine of "Running Out" immediately sets the tone as Buchanan's guitar sings with a woozy fluid intonation, perfect for his expressive and emotive leads. The middle-eight solo is a prime example of his uncanny ability to switch from sharp, jagged, and sinister, to a string-stretching, bluesy intonation. This contrasts the backbeat-laden "Keep What You Got" funkfest, and the noir combination of acoustic and electric textures on Billy Roberts "Good God Have Mercy." The reading of Jimi Hendrix' "If Six Was Nine" is an almost natural extension of the original, with a brooding and slinky rhythm. While some purists may consider the overproduction slick, Mardin's creation is an undeniable improvement over his prior non-live outings. ~ All Music Guide *

SHANNON CURFMAN - Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions (1999)

What is it about Fargo, North Dakota? The town that gave us Jonny Lang, young guitar-slinger of the 1990s, now presents Shannon Curfman... young guitar-slinger of the 1990s. Rereleased on Arista Records, Curfman's debut, "Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions" was recorded when the guitarist was only 14. But you'd never guess it by listening to her play; although her style doesn't have the distinctive stamp that will come with experience, she's more than competent. And her singing voice sounds like it belongs to someone twice her age. Though the comparisons to Bonnie Raitt may be a bit premature, Curfman's got just as much potential as any of the other young blues-rockers littering the landscape these days, if not more. It'll be most worthwhile to hear how she develops; "Loud Guitars, Big Suspicions" may well be the debut of the next queen of blues guitar. *

Two singles were taken from it: "True Friends" and "Playing with Fire," both of which charted in the U.S. Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, the former peaking at #27, in 1999, and the latter only reaching #37, in 2000. As for the album, instead, it got to #3 in the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart, in 1999, also later reaching a lower #39 on the Heatseekers chart, in North America, in 2000.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - One Step Up-Two Steps Back: The Songs Of Bruce Springsteen (1997)

It's easy to think of Bruce Springsteen as that scruffy, over-rated songwriter from New Jersey who's had his day in the sun, but the truth is that he really does have an amazingly diverse and heartfelt body of work that includes strong output from recent years. Just the fact that artists ranging from David Bowie to Ben E. King to the Smithereens appear on this tribute disc is a testament to the respect he generates in all the hip music circles. Of the more familiar songs, Joe Cocker does a pleasant "Human Touch," Martin Zeller offers a moving "Darkness on the Edge of Town," while Ritchie Havens delivers a rather tepid acoustic version of "Streets of Philadelphia." But the lesser known compositions covered by lesser known artists are the ones that really stand out on this two-CD set. In particular, "All or Nothing at All" by Marshall Crenshaw, "Janey, Don't You Lose Heart" by Mrs. Fun/Tina & the B-Side Movement, and "Stolen Car" by Elliot Murphy are impressive treatments of Springsteen tunes that never climbed the charts. An effort seems to have been made to gather mostly obscure material to match with mostly obscure musicians, but the result is a compilation that is far more listenable than most of the tribute albums that have cropped up in the last while. 1, 2, 3.

ELVIS PRESLEY - Suspicious Minds - The Memphis 1969 Anthology (1999)

Elvis Presley never sounded better than he does on these recordings made in Memphis at Chip Moman's American Sound Studios in January 1969. The artist was still on an incredible high following the success of his legendary NBC-TV "comeback" special, which had aired a little over a month earlier. Eager to record some relevant music after a decade of horrible movie soundtracks, Presley decided to work with Moman's smash-making (122 hits in three years) Memphis house band. Indeed, four charting singles came from these sessions--"Suspicious Minds," "Don't Cry Daddy," "In the Ghetto," and "Kentucky Rain"--as well as two critically acclaimed albums, From Elvis in Memphis and Back in Memphis. This two-disc set includes all the music the King recorded during that stint at Moman's studio, ranging from Neil Diamond, Bobby Darin, and Beatles covers to current and old country hits ("Gentle on My Mind," Johnny Tillotson's "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'") to a cover of Chuck Willis's classic "Any Day Now" that tops the R&B original. Of special note is "Long Black Limousine," a song about a huge star returning to her small hometown in a hearse. All the originally released American recordings are available on the From Nashville to Memphis box set. RCA fleshes out this collection with previously unreleased alternate takes (including the in-between studio chatter), as well as the Darin tune ("I'll Be There," a hit for Gerry & the Pacemakers) and a snippet of one previously unheard tune, "Poor Man's Gold." There's been much debate about the mix, but these tracks sounded great on vinyl in the late 1960s, and they'll continue to sound great for years to come, no matter the format. - amazon.com 1, 2, 3, 4.

CHRIS HARWOOD - Nice To Meet Miss Christine (1972)

This is apparently one of UK folk music's most sought after records. It was originally released back in 1970 on a tiny label and quickly sank into obscurity, but since then the album has developed a pretty significant cult following - and rightly so. Featuring a rabble of pretty darn tootin' guest players - Peter Banks (Yes), Tommy Eyre (Rainbow), Ian McDonald (King Crimson), Pete York (The Spencer Davis Group) and renowned arranger Mike Maran, we have quite a stunning collection of tracks which utterly transcend usual folk expectations. In fact it's not really folk music at all, rather this pushes into the realms of psychedelia and at times even muted fusion (?) giving us something quite seriously unique. Of course it's all held together by Christine's incredible vocal chords, which gives the record its heart and the more you listen to her, the harder it is to believe that this is her only record. Apparently she went on to do sporadic session vocals and finds this whole album extremely embarrassing (since she was only 16 years old at the time...) but I think that's what makes her voice so interesting. There's something untrained and na?ve about it which sets it apart from so many other albums of the time, and twinned with the quite incredible musical accompaniments makes this an utterly essential listening experience. Recommended. *

INNES SIBUN - Tail Dragger (2007)

Innes Sibun wastes no time in getting to his point with the first assault from his 11(12)-track opus. Launching into Otis Rush’s “It Takes Time”, Sibun's high-energy fervor, blistering, no-nonsense guitar artistry and raggedly honest vocals recall Rory Gallagher. In recent years Sibun's been building momentum with a highly aggressive solo act that, of late, further fuels comparisons to Gallagher through his ability to shred his way through meat’n’potatoes blues. Like Gallagher, Sibun’s a guitarist first – one of exacting tone and impassioned playing. Sibun refines his craft with each release and his band's reputation as a dazzling live act is picking up steam across the UK. On "Tail Dragger" he seamlessly grafts well-crafted originals and wisely-chosen covers to create 48 minutes of smoldering blues-rock. *

Mark–Almond were an English band of the late 1960s and early 1970s, who worked in the territory between rock and jazz. In 1970 Jon Mark and Johnny Almond formed Mark-Almond (also occasionally referred to as The Mark-Almond Band). The melancholy tones of saxophonist Almond were an integral part of the group's sound, and Almond frequently played flutes as well, including the rarely-heard bass flute. Characterized by a blend of blues and jazz riffs, latin beats, and a mellow rock aesthetic, and in contrast the heavier guitar-driven rock of his contemporaries, composer and band leader Mark worked at producing warm and melodic works.

GOV'T MULE - Deja Voodoo (2004)

DEJA VOODOO serves as a comeback for Gov't Mule, who lost founding member Allen Woody in August 2000. Bandmates Warren Haynes and Matt Abts carried on with a search to fill Woody's shoes, and this led to live recordings featuring guest bassists on each cut. This studio outing welcomes the arrival of former Black Crowes bass player Andy Hess and keyboardist Danny Louis, whose entry transforms the Mule into a quartet, upping the creative potential for all involved. Being the consummate musician that he is, Haynes guides this potent ensemble down a wide-ranging path. Wielding his ever-present slide, the in-demand guitarist pours plenty of soulful playing into the country-tinged mellowness of "Wine and Blood," switching gears to plug a wah-wah pedal in for the muscular strut "Perfect Shelter." Louis's organ provides a neat foil for Haynes, be it the New Orleans-like funk fills that pepper "Bad Man Walking" or the subtle support provided on the soaring "Little Toy Brain." Hess also gets his licks in, holding the bottom down admirably with Abts, particularly on the rumbling "Mr. Man" and the thumping blues-rock of "Slackjaw Jezebel." DEJA VOODOO proves Gov't Mule still has plenty of kick left. Gov't Mule: Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar); Danny Louis (keyboards); Andy Hess (bass guitar); Matt Abts (drums). 1, 2.

TOTO - Past To Present 1977-1990 (1990)

Toto was a Grammy Award winning American rock band founded in 1977 by some of the most popular and experienced session musicians of the era. The band enjoyed great commercial success in the 1980s, beginning with the band's self-titled debut, released in 1978, which immediately brought the band into the mainstream rock spectrum of the time. Continuing with 1982's critically acclaimed and commercially successful Toto IV, Toto became one of the biggest selling music groups of their era. They also composed the theme music for the film Dune. Although their popularity in the United States diminished in the 1990s and 2000s, they continued to tour to sold out arenas, clubs, and theaters internationally. Toto was known for their technical prowess in the studio, as well as a musical style that combines elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B, and jazz, and although they were regularly associated with the soft rock genre, and particularly the neo-progressive rock genre, this broad array of musical styles helped them appeal to a variety of musicians and non-musician listeners. The band released 17 albums and have sold over 30 million records to date. 1, 2.

RUSSELL MORRIS - Retrospective (1978)

Russell Morris is an Australian singer-songwriter, who had five Australian top ten singles during the late 1960s and early 1970s. On 1 July 2008, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) recognised Russell Morris' iconic status when he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Morris' career started in September 1966 with the formation of the Melbourne group Somebody's Image, which rose to prominence with a local hit version of the Joe South song "Hush." Morris was convinced to leave Somebody's Image for a solo career. His manager/producer, local music identity Ian Meldrum, spent unprecedented hours and money to create a seven-minute production extravaganza around a song called "The Real Thing." Once the result was released to shocked radio programmers who had never been asked to play such a long Australian single before, it was up to Morris' personality, singing, and performing talents to make the record work. It reached Australia's number one spot in June 1969. Without any promotional support from Morris, "The Real Thing" reached number one in Chicago, Houston, and New York....All Music Guide 1, 2.

Chief songwriter and guitarist Mick Jones is the only member from back in the day and he has gotten together a competent band that plays the songs with respect to the originals and definitely given them a fresh sparkling sound. MICHAEL BURKS - Iron Man (2008)

Michael Burks is a guitar slinger with a brawny tone, deeply emotional singing and rompin', stompin' blues power. He was a nominee for "Best New Artist" in the 2000 Blues Foundation W.C. Handy Awards, but the truth is, Michael Burks already had a lifetime of blues under his belt when considered for that award. A relative newcomer to the form, Burks recorded his self-produced, critically-acclaimed debut in 1997, and released Make It Rain, his Alligator Records debut, in 2001. Produced by Burks and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer and fueled by Burks' hard-driving road band, IRON MAN (featuring seven of twelve songs written or co-written by Burks) is an electrifying slice of emotional, rocked-out blues. His fiery fretwork, gruff, fervent vocals and overwhelming intensity are captured here live in the studio. The album features some of the hottest guitar playing and most soulful singing Burks has ever recorded. Burks wields his axe like a man possessed, breathing fire into every track, whether it's the charging rocker "Quiet Little Town," the chilling blues of "Icepick Through My Heart" or his sizzling take on Free's "Fire And Water." IRON MAN is a potent dose of contemporary blues, almost crushing in its intensity. *

BACK DOOR SLAM - Roll Away (2007)

Back Door Slam (named for the Robert Cray classic) hails from the Isle of Man, an interesting little island in the UK that many people don’t know much about, unless you’re from that neck of the woods, of course. But the tiny island in the middle of the Irish Sea that was once home to the likes of the Bee Gees and the Mayflower's Captain Myles Standish is also home to Davy Knowles (vocals, lead guitar, mandolin, lap steel), Ross Doyle (drums) and Adam Jones (bass), a fabulous rock trio known as Back Door Slam. Their debut album, Roll Away is eleven exhilarating and melodious songs, all composed by Davy Knowles, the band’s talented lead guitarist and vocalist (all except for an excellent cover of Blind Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues”). Though much of the music falls easily into that classic category, or what some would merely call "rock," a few are quite bluesy as well. On the whole, there’s a fine mixture of rock and blues-rock on the album, all executed very tastefully and professionally. Fans of good ol' rock music in general, especially those who have a tendency to think that they don’t make music like this anymore, will be awestruck by the quality and the diversity of the songs on Roll Away. Don’t let this one pass you by. It’s an excellent rock album by a talented rock band. *

Juno Award winning keyboardist/singer/songwriter Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne’s "Can’t Stop Now", his third release on Toronto-based Electro-Fi Records, is abuzz with crackling Blues Boss originals, plus a pair of well-chosen covers, that embrace his elemental influences – high-energy boogie-woogie piano, rolling New Orleans blues and jazz, improv-heavy Kansas City swing and vibrant West Coast jump. Co-produced by the Isaak Brothers (owners of the Yukon studio) and Wayne himself, Can’t Stop Now features many of his regular crew, Russell Jackson (bass), Brandon Isaak (guitar), Dave “Hurricane” Hoerl (harmonica), Johnny Ferreira (sax), Theo Brown (drums) with a special guest appearance the late guitar great Jeff Healey. *

THE NIGHTHAWKS - American Landscape (2009)

A hard-driving DC-based bar band with strong Chicago blues roots. Formed in 1972 by harpist and vocalist Mark Wenner and guitarist Jimmy Thackery, the band earned a reputation as a solid outfit through more than a decade of touring and recording projects with John Hammond and former members of Muddy Waters's band. Thackery left in 1986, but Wenner regrouped around longtime members Jan Zukowski on bass and Pete Ragusa on drums. Trouble, their 1991 release on Powerhouse, is a blend of blues, R&B, and rock influences, with a typically energetic sound born in thousands of one-night stands across the country. Subsequent efforts include 1993's live Rock This House, 1996's Pain & Paradise and 1999's Still Wild. A collection of live performances in 2001 saw release in the spring of 2002 as Live Tonight. In 1974, in the liner notes of their first release, the band set forth a mission statement to recreate Rock and Roll by going back to the sources and recombining them into truly American music. One need only to look at the sources for the material that makes up this "American Landscape" to realize The Nighthawks are still at it, choosing tunes from Lazy Lester and Ike Turner, Sam and Dave, Dan Penn and Marvin Gaye, as well as contemporaries like the Imperial Crowns and Tom Waits' theme from HBO's "The Wire", along with two Bob Dylan classics, and two Johnny Castle originals. The album is dedicated to David Simon, who not only included Nighthawks material in "The Wire", but had the band perform live in scenes in "Homicide: Life on the Street" on NBC and "The Wire" on HBO. *

V.A. - Across The Universe - Music From The Motion Picture (2007)

Given a track record littered by misfired oddities like the Bee Gees starring in the 1978 movie version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, successfully transforming The Beatles' epochal oeuvre into film musicals has been an elusive alchemy. Yet director Julie Taymor's 1968-centered, socio-political romance is more than just a stunning visual achievement. Its soundtrack brings a crucially intimate, emotionally engaging sensibility to its rich catalog of Beatles source material. Using an approach she rightly dubbed "organic," Taymor never gets too ambitious with the original arrangements, balancing the plaintive, often stark performances of central young stars Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood with equally compelling turns by supporting players Carol Woods and Joe Anderson. The stars successfully evoke early Beatlemania via the energetic charms of Sturgess' "All My Loving" and Wood's "It Won't Be Long," then get straight to the canon's often melancholy heart on his take of "In My Life," and her gentle cover of "Blackbird." Taymor's use of star turns--the entire point of too many Beatles-rooted projects--is as sparing as it is deft. Eddie Izzard's effusive "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" is the product of several edited improvisations, while U2's Bono and Edge re-imagine "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" by way of Pink Floyd. Joe Cocker's swamp-dirge "Come Together" shows why he's long been one of the best interpreters of the Lennon-McCartney catalog, and Dana Fuchs alternately evokes the heavenly and hellish via her tender "Dear Prudence," as well as her manic, Joplin-channeling burn through "Helter Skelter." Elsewhere on the CD, Bono teams with Secret Machine for the straightforward "I Am the Walrus," while the Dallas indie rockers also take dream-pop turns on the instrumental "Flying" and George Harrison's haunting "Blue Jay Way." Remarkably, Taymor claims the bulk of the performances here were not lip-synced, but recorded live as the cameras rolled. - amazon.com 1, 2, 3.

LAURA NYRO - Christmas And The Beads Of Sweat (1970)

Christmas and the Beads of Sweat is the fourth LP by New York-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro. The album was released on the Columbia Records label in November 1970 after Nyro had recorded it in the early summer with producers Felix Cavaliere and Arif Mardin. Whilst Nyro had handed over production reins, she was still in control of the project and arranged her compositions. The album is seen as the closing part of a Laura Nyro trilogy that also comprises 1968's Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and 1969's New York Tendaberry. Musically, the album is a bridge between the two, balancing the lighter and more joyful tones of Eli with the dark, sensual, and piano-dominated Tendaberry. Nyro had by this time built up a strong reputation as a songwriter, and the album features star turns from Duane Allman, who adds a guitar solo to the driving "Beads of Sweat," and Alice Coltrane, who adds harp to a number of the more mystical compositions. The album, buoyed by Nyro's popularity as a songwriter, became her second commercially successful album in succession, peaking at #51 on the Billboard 200, known as the Pop Albums chart. The album is also responsible for spawning Nyro's sole chart hit single, with a cover of Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Up on the Roof," which peaked at #92 on the Pop Singles chart, now known as the Hot 100. Christmas and the Beads of Sweat is regarded by many to be in the same league as its two predecessors, but is generally less favoured by rock critics. *

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Delmark - 55 Years Of Blues (2008)

Delmark Records, and the joined-at-the-hip Jazz Record Mart, are venerable Chicago musical institutions. Formed by Bob Koester better than half-a-century ago and specializing in jazz and blues music, Delmark is the longest-running independent record label in America. The label's back catalog is a veritable cultural treasure chest, representing some of the most influential and important recordings in both the blues and jazz genres

In March 2008, Delmark celebrated the label's 55th birthday with a party at Buddy Guy's Legends club in Chicago that featured most of Delmark's current blues roster. The two-disc CD/DVD set 55 Years of Blues is a further continuation of the label's anniversary celebration, a look back at Delmark's storied past with music from both well-known blues artists like Junior Wells, Otis Rush, Magic Sam, and Sleepy John Estes as well as lesser-known, but incredible singers and instrumentalists like Bonnie Lee, Willie Kent, Jimmy Dawkins, and Floyd McDaniel. 1, 2.

BONUS TRACKS:
12. I Go to Sleep
13. Both Sides of Goodbye (with Willie Nelson)

The first Pretenders album after the longest recording layoff in the band's history (six years), BREAK UP THE CONCRETE finds Chrissie Hynde re-energized, fronting a new bunch of musicians on a fresh, arresting batch of new songs released on a new label. Original drummer Martin Chambers, still part of the touring outfit, is replaced here by session-drummer king Jim Keltner. Perhaps even more significantly, new arrival Eric Heywood (pedal steel) boasts a lengthy Americana resume (Son Volt, Jayhawks, Ray LaMontagne) and brings with him the highest quotient of rootsiness ever to occupy a Pretenders album. While there are some driving rockers that recall the glory days of "Precious" and "Tattooed Love Boys," with Keltner employing ingeniously mutated New Orleans-cum-Bo Diddley beats, a striking number of tracks here roam a more roots-rock-oriented area. Warm, organic acoustic-guitar strumming and long, keening pedal steel lines frame Hynde's one-of-a-kind voice on the slow-burning country-soul waltz "Don't Lose Faith in Me," the rather Lucinda Williams-esque "Love's a Mystery," and other smartly conceived tunes, balancing out an album that's simultaneously earthy and urgent.

GREG HOWE - Sound Proof (2008)

Guitarist Greg Howe is back with a new CD called Sound Proof on Mike Varney’s Tone Center label. Of all of Mike Varney’s Shrapnel alumni, Greg Howe is one of the most successful examples of players who've made the step up to fusion (or more precisely, heavy fusion), and this is an excellent CD for fans of the genre. Howe brought in some incredible players for Sound Proof: Jon Reshard on bass, Gianluca Palmieri on drums and David Cook (not the American Idol winner) on keyboards. Sound Proof consists of some amazing material, including a tasty instrumental cover of Rufus and Chaka Khan’s “Tell Me Something Good” that incorporates Greg’s brand of fast and funky fusion. There are 14 songs with a total run time ofapproximately 56 minutes, which includes a few short, introductory tracks clocking in at 30 seconds or less. 1, 2.

Helen Merrill “Sings the Beatles” is a dedication to the sound of the Beatles and was recorded in Japan and originally released in 1970. It was recorded live in the studio and arranged by Japanese pianist Masahiko Satoh. All the songs for this album were picked with the help of her son, Allan Merrill, writer of such Pop Hits as “I Love Rock & Roll” and “When the Night Comes”. - elusivedisc.com

DAVE GROSS - Crawling The Walls (2008)

Mixing Twenties Jazz, Swing, New Orleans Jazz, Early Rock & Roll, and Blues; this album is a myriad of America’s great lexicon of roots music. If you are a fan of big band arrangements and sounds, this album is clearly the front runner for Album of the Year in that category, hands down. Mixing the great horn work of Gerry Niewood (saxophones, clarinet), Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet), Doug Sasfai (tenor sax), and a few others; the album is a big band swinger, jazzer, and jumper’s oozing aural dream! Gross enlists some Little Richard/New Orleans Rock & Roll complete with horns on the fun “Rock In My Shoe.” Gross handles the early catalog Ike Turner romp “Cubano Jump” with a passion for originality and has a nice rhumba bounce on top of it. He gets up and jumps with the little-know T-Bone Walker side “Inspiration Blues.” The Jimmy Witherspoon-eque but Dave Gross penned original of “You’re Not the One”. This one comes straight out of a forties jazz and blues club complete with a martini and a cigar. Niewood’s sax smolders and the muted trumpet of Kellso is Gillespie-like blues. You’ll be transported back in time to long days gone by in the popular American music, where musicianship and craftsmanship mattered.

2007 Blues Music Award nominee for Best New Artist Debut.

GREGG ALLMAN - No Stranger To The Dark: The Best Of Gregg Allman (2002)

Even if you accept that a best-of for Gregg Allman can focus wholly on his solo career (as this one does) and not include any of his work with the Allman Brothers, this could not by any stretch be considered "the best of Gregg Allman." It's really the best of what he's recorded for Sony, which is really an entirely different animal. That means there's nothing from his three 1970s albums, which most listeners would view as containing his best solo work; the chronological stretch on this comp only covers the last half of the 1980s and the 1990s. Like, say, Rod Stewart, this was a time in which his recordings had really only a shadow of their old power, although (like Stewart) his voice was still in good shape and he didn't stoop to levels as low as Stewart did. Given the pool of what it has to work with, this disc is a reasonable selection, evenly spread between highlights of the I'm No Angel, Just Before the Bullets Fly, and Searching for Simplicity albums. And there are a few extras that might make this worth getting for Allman completists: previously unreleased live cuts from 1987 ("Melissa") and 1998 (his long-lived staple cover of Jackson Browne's "These Days"), a studio outtake from 1985, and "Brother to Brother," a duet with Lori Yates that was on the 1989 Next of Kin soundtrack. Overall, though, it's hardly a guide to even some of his best work, the 1980s tracks suffering from slick period production and unmemorable AOR material. His voice is certainly operating at a level above the quality of many of the songs, and is better served by the occasional cuts on which the blues-soul elements come more to the foreground, like "I've Got News for You" and the cover of "Dark End of the Street." ~ All Music Guide *

BOZ SCAGGS - But Beautiful (2003)

Apparently, old rock singers who have exhausted their commercial appeal and have sung all the pop and soul standards have but one place to turn the American popular songbook. Linda Ronstadt pioneered this move in the '80s, Rod Stewart picked it up at the turn of the century, and, now no longer at Virgin, Boz Scaggs picks up the torch with 2003's But Beautiful, a ten-track trawl through standards like "What's New?," "How Long Has This Been Going On?," and "Sophisticated Lady." It should be no surprise that Scaggs is not deliberately following Stewart's footsteps in his liner notes, he says his old friend Jimmy Pierre initiated the project years ago with a list of songs he thought Boz should sing, and then pianist/arranger Paul Nagel later encouraged him to begin this project but it can't help but feel that way, given the number of old rockers turning to the music their parents loved. Scaggs, thankfully, doesn't take the lush, orchestrated route, choosing to record with a small quartet featuring Nagel, saxophonist Eric Crystal, bassist John Shifflett, and drummer Jason Lewis. They have a nice, late-night feel nothing adventurous, but well-done and Scaggs is appropriately laid-back, which doesn't necessarily mean that he's well-suited for this material. His off-hand phrasing sometimes is too casual and he delivers the tunes predictably, never finding a way to make these much-heard songs sound fresh. That doesn't mean this sounds bad, because it doesn't; it's an entirely pleasant listen. But even longtime Boz Scaggs fans may not find a reason to spin this more than once. ~ All Music Guide *

"Live in Europe" is an album released by Irish Blues guitarist Rory Gallagher in 1972. As the title sests, it is a series of live recordings made by Gallagher during his European tour. Live In Europe broke into the Top 10 of the UK albums chart, consolidating the success of his first two studio offerings. Rory's high-octane blues-rock was well suited for the stage, a fact to which anyone who saw him in concert or has heard this or other live albums like Irish Tour '74 and Stage Struck can attest. The set kicks off with two rockers, Junior Wells' "Messin' With the Kid" and the original "Laundromat," before Gallagher slows down for "I Could've Had Religion" and Blind Boy Fuller's "Pistol Slapper Blues." The pace quickens for "Going to My Home Town," a showcase for some fierce mandolin playing with enthusiastic audience participation, and the rocking boogie of "In Your Town." "Bullfrog Blues" provides the finale during which the other two thirds of the power trio--bassist Gerry McAvoy and drummer Wilgar Campbell get to solo for the appreciative crowd. Live In Europe became Rory's first gold album, and his second chart album success in the States.

On Time is Grand Funk Railroad's first studio album, and was released in August 1969 by Capitol Records. It was produced by Terry Knight. "Time Machine", the band's first single release, barely broke the top 50 in the singles charts. However, after the success of their second album "Grand Funk" (aka the Red Album) "On Time" went gold shortly thereafter in 1970, one of four RIAA Gold Record Awards for the band that year. The other two albums reaching gold status in 1970 for GFR were Closer to Home and Live Album. A notable characteristic of the album's production - quite rare for hard rock bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s - is that the guitars are mixed rather low in comparison to the bass guitar, which is louder than any other instrument. The normal practice at the time was to turn the guitar up in the mix higher than any other instrument. Some fans have claimed this was because Mel Schacher was usually considered to be the band's best musician, but why this was done is unknown. While the Terry Knight-produced Grand Funk Railroad albums tend to feature the bass as prominent in the mix, Mark Farner's guitar was mixed higher on subsequent albums.

AGNES STRANGE - Strange Flavour (1975)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

Britain in the pre-punk 1970s - most of the Supergroups of Rock have become too vast and trunk less to mean much to the average music fans in their hearts. An odd time, when the secret master beloved by all was Alex Harvey, and up and down the country, every night, small-time bands kept the spirit alive; playing R&B, Prog, Folk Rock, you name it, they didn't give up the music they loved, but record labels didn't really get it - giving rise to the phenomenon nowadays loved by collectors - the Private Press record. Agnes Strange was one of the best and most unusual (and at the same time archetypal) of these bands. Their private press label was a bizarre joint venture between a major label and a chain of Real Ale pubs. With producer and well-known scholar of 1950s rock' n' roll - Dave Travis at the recording controls, it was never going to be ordinary! Much bootlegged, pirated and faked by collectors' labels, here for the first time, with the full involvement of Dave Travis and the band, is the REAL story of Agnes Strange. 1, 2.

Primarily known as an interpreter of artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan to Townes Van Zandt and David Olney, for RED DIRT GIRL Emmylou Harris composed most of the material herself, the first time she'd done this since 1985's BALLAD OF SALLY ROSE. This follow-up to 1995's splendid Daniel Lanois-produced WRECKING BALL finds her applying that album's same ethereal touch, thanks to Lanois protege Malcom Burn who helms this project's production. Harris' inspiration ranges far and wide, and includes her late father (the aching "Bang the Drum Slowly"), the poet Carl Sandberg (a shimmering "Michelangelo"), and the film BOYS DON'T CRY (the folky title track). Although famous guests pop up throughout, their appearances are of an organic nature rather than some crass marketing ploy. The wah-wah guitar of Luscious Jackson's Jill Cuniff adds heft to the undulating electro beats of "I Don't Wanna Talk About It Now," while the harmonies provided by husband-and-wife team Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa add another dimension to the love lament "Tragedy." Elsewhere, Dave Matthews' vocals provide a hand-in-glove fit with Harris' angelic timbre on the swirling "My Antonia."

On her 29th album, Emmylou Harris continues the evolution from innocent folkie to present day renaissance woman. Guests include Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa, Buddy and Julie Miller, Guy Clark, Kate McGarrigle, and even alt-rock upstarts Dave Matthews and Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff. RED DIRT GIRL won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

She made a number of albums with organist Brian Auger and the Brian Auger Trinity, including a 1968 hit cover of Dylan's "This Wheel's on Fire." This debut inaugurated her solo career and saw her supported by a crack crew of 'Canterbury' - associated musicians, almost all of whom would show up again several years down the road to support her next solo release, Sunset Glow. It was on this recording that she was introduced to pianist Keith Tippett, and by the time of this album's eventual release in 1971, she was Mrs. Julie Tippett (and later "Tippetts"). This record draws upon the influences in her stylistic repertoire, primarily folk and brass-arranged R&B sporting the great British blues-rock guitarist Chris Spedding on lead.

CAROLE KING - Tapestry - Legacy Edition (2008)

Tapestry is a ground-breaking pop album by singer-songwriter Carole King, released in 1971. It features minimal production by Lou Adler. It has earned a spot as one of the quintessential recordings of the rock era. Tapestry was ranked US number 1 for 15 weeks and remained on the charts for over six years. The album also garnered four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, Record of the Year ("It's Too Late"); and Song of the Year ("You've Got a Friend").

On April 22, 2008, Sony/BMG, Epic, and Ode released the 2-disc Legacy Edition of Tapestry, featuring the original album fully remastered, and a bonus disc of live vocal/piano renditions of 11 of the 12 songs on the album recorded between 1973 (in Boston, Massachusetts; Columbia, Maryland; and Central Park, New York City, New York) and in 1976 (at the San Francisco Opera House, San Francisco, California). 1, 2.

DISC 1:
01. I Feel The Earth Move 02. So Far Away 03. It's Too Late 04. Home Again 05. Beautiful 06. Way Over Yonder 07. You've Got A Friend 08. Where You Lead 09. Will You Love Me Tomorrow? 10. Smackwater Jack 11. Tapestry 12. (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

DISC 2 (live):

HANK WILLIAMS JR. - Lone Wolf (1990)

01. Good Friends, Good Whiskey, Good Lovin'
02. U.S.A. Today
03. Hot To Trot
04. Big Mamou
05. I Mean I Love You
06. Man To Man
07. Almost Persuaded
08. Stoned At The Jukebox
09. Ain't Nobody's Business
10. Lone Wolf

Hank Junior's blend of country with raw rock'n'roll is not unique of itself, but nobody else ever did it quite this way. This album contains plenty of hard rocking music, even including his incredible cover of Almost persuaded. If you are familiar with David Houston's original, or with any of the faithful covers, you will be taken by surprise on first hearing Hank's cover. I love the original version but I also enjoy Hank's very different interpretation of this classic country song but I can well understand why some people can't stand it. Hank includes a slice of Cajun music in the form of Big Mamou, which features Jimmy C Newman. Hank likes to include a political song on each of his albums, so here you get USA today. Stoned at the jukebox is a re-recording of a song that Hank originally recorded in the seventies. Lone wolf is a moody, bluesy song that nicely rounds off a great album from the king of rowdy country music. *

ROD STEWART - The Definitive (2008)

Anyone who has charted Stewart’s career can tell you the best years were from 1969, when his self-titled debut came out, to the mid-seventies, at which point it became clear he was more responsive to simply moving his hips than using his soulful voice and lyrical skills. That trajectory basically runs briskly through the first eight to ten tracks on disc one of The Definitive Rod Stewart, from seduction narrative “Maggie May” to lascivious “Tonight’s The Night,” where Stewart professes his lust for a young virgin. Who might be interested in this 23-track, 14-video compendium? Causal fans who only know Stewart’s blockbuster hits could just as easily hunt down the 2001 single-disc The Very Best of Rod Stewart. The sixteen cuts provide much the same viewpoint that The Definitive Rod Stewart covers. That best-of is leaner, but that doesn’t mean it won’t disappoint. For anyone who needs the depth that Stewart’s storied discography requires, listeners could search out the still in print, four-CD Storyteller: The Complete Anthology. While it stops in the eighties, it’s a compilation worth owning.

The Definitive Rod Stewart has plenty of favorites and certainly Stewart fans will find quite a lot to like. But a top-40 singles collection does not reveal Stewart at his finest, nor does it supply a coherent journey of his changing public persona. Many of Stewart’s album cuts present a wider and deeper perspective on his ability to pen poignant ballads, or to put his unique stamp on other people’s songs, and that doesn’t even mention the brashly sloppy rock he did with Faces. “Stay with Me” is the only Faces tune included on The Definitive Rod Stewart, which is a shame since the band created some of the foremost seventies-era, hard-rocking stuff this side of the Rolling Stones. 1, 2, 3.

The eight original tracks include On The Road, Charlie’s Blues, Hard To Be A Man and the title track, all demonstrating the critically acclaimed strength of the band’s songwriting. TERRY REID - Seed Of Memory (1976)thumbup

03. Brave Awakening
04. To Be Treated Rite
05. Ooh Baby (Make Me Feel So Young)
06. The Way You Walk
07. The Frame
08. Fooling You

Terry Reid moved to California in the mid-'70s, befriending a number of musicians from those parts and broadening his sound in the process. One result was this album, produced by Graham Nash and featuring David Lindley on acoustic and slide guitars. Seed of Memory isn't as heavy as his earlier work, and not remotely the bold, strident virtuoso rock production of his first LP most of it, apart from the vaguely Led Zeppelin-ish "The Way You Walk," is fairly laid-back by Reid's standards. "Ooh Baby" tries for a kind of meld of funk and British blues. But several numbers, like "Brave Awakening," with its relaxed beat, high harmonies, and understated backing orchestration, or the ominous acoustic-textured "To Be Treated Rite," seem more like outtakes from Nash's Songs for Beginners or his subsequent albums, or one of Neil Young's mid-'70s albums, than they do like the work of one of England's most promising '60s bluesmen. The album ends on a disjointed note, with the ambitious but not wholly successful "Fooling You," which makes extensive use of the saxophone. It all just might not be what fans look for in Reid's work, and lacks some of the excitement of his other albums. ~ All Music Guide

A perfect mix of power and finesse American style, they blend Southern boogie with lots of prog goodies thrown in such as funk-driven licks, fun country-style pickin' fusion, baroque acoustic classical bits, rockabilly metal, bluegrass and jazz – think of them as a more complex, instrumental version of KANSAS. They split up in 1982 but made a successful reunion again in 1992, gracing us with a total of seven studio albums, four live cd's and one standard 'greatest hits'

Live Yardbirds: Featuring Jimmy Page is a live album released by English blues rock band The Yardbirds in 1971 of their live performance at the Anderson Theatre in New York City on March 30, 1968. It quickly went out of print, though it was reissued once by Columbia Special Products in the late seventies (this quickly went out of print as well). Counterfeit copies in black & white covers do exist, which are sometimes labeled as being Promotional Copies. Jimmy Page has obtained legal injunctions against companies who have planned to reissue it on compact disc. For this reason, it is the rarest Yardbirds album.

KEVIN COSTNER & MODERN WEST - Untold Truth (2008)

Though best known for his acting career, Costner is no stranger to the art of making music and songwriting. The band's history goes back some 20 years when Kevin first met band mate John Coinman in Los Angeles during an acting workshop. The two began playing and writing music together and soon after started a band called "Roving Boy." As Kevin's star began to rise, he was unable to devote much time to the band. However, he and some of the band members continued behind-the-scenes playing, writing, and recording anytime they could throughout the years. A few years back the itch became stronger for Costner to start performing on a more regular basis. Costner recalls a performance back in August 2005 and remarks, "I remember looking out into the crowd, thinking `this just feels right'." And with that, his passion continued to grow with the end product of that passion being the debut album, Untold Truths. Radio programmer, Scott Lindy was one of the first people to hear the new album and had this to say, "I know what you're thinking about when you hear Kevin's gonna put out an album of country music. I thought it too. But then I heard it, and I got it. He's not chasing fame here (do you really think he needs to?), he's following a passion. I couldn't keep this music off of the air." The album is comprised of 12 original tracks all written or co-written by Kevin Costner & Modern West (Modern West is John Coinman, Blair Forward, Teddy Morgan, Larry Cobb and Park Chisolm). A 4-song sampler will be shipped to Country radio October 1 and will include tracks "Long Hot Night", "Hey Man What About You", "90 Miles An Hour" and "Superman 14." The track "Long Hot Night" will be available for download wherever digital music is sold starting 9/30. See below for album's complete track listing. The band will tour later this year and into early 2009 in support of the release. *

Guitarist Mick Taylor was neither an original member of the Rolling Stones nor still in the band when it began selling out sports stadiums in the late-'80s and '90s. But the sophisticated jazz- and blues-influenced guitar licks Taylor added to such classic albums as Sticky Fingers gave the Stones an added dimension they lacked before and after him. As a preliminary matter, of the albums selected as representing Mick Taylor's solo work, this one, sporting "Gerry Groom, Mick Taylor and Friends" on the spine, could arguably be seen as Mick doing a supporting guest spot with Groom.

JOHN LEE HOOKER - Face To Face (2003)

In June 2001, at the time of his death at the ripe old age of 83, John Lee Hooker had been recording material for a new album. Much like his 1989 comeback outing The Healer — as well as everything he released in the intervening years — the collection, which appropriately is titled Face to Face, was designed to pair Hooker with a plethora of special guests. Still, it was far from complete, and after his passing it took over two years to put the finishing touches upon the project. It’s certainly true that most posthumously completed albums of this sort wind up sounding forced, and the "collaborations" frequently feel disconnected and out of place. In other words, there are plenty of places where Face to Face seriously could have gone astray, but credit must be given to his daughter Zakiya Hooker and producer Ollan Christopher Bell, who took painstaking efforts to keep the late bluesman’s voice and vision intact, turning the song cycle into what undoubtedly is the must-have blues album. 1, 2.

"Beautiful Loser" was the last album Bob Seger recorded before hooking up with the Silver Bullet Band and finally breaking through to mass popularity after spending the better part of a decade laboring as a relative unknown. Five songs from this 1975 release would appear on "Live Bullet" a year later, the album that was the springboard from Seger's leap to the big time.

THE BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND - Live [2 CDs] (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Though largely forgotten by the public at large today, this was a very influential and highly accomplished band back in the mid-'60s. For one thing, they were one of the first racially integrated bands, and they were a blues band who played with a force and amplification that greatly appealed to rock audiences, making them one of the first American blues bands to “cross over.” Anyone who’s ever said that “white guys can’t play the blues” obviously never heard Paul Butterfield, the autocratic leader of the band whose passionate but unremarkable vocal talents paled in comparison to his virtuoso harmonica skills. The other “star” in the band was lead guitarist Michael Bloomfield, who rivaled Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck as the guitarist of the mid-'60s.

In 1967, inspired by his idol Junior Parker, Butterfield formed a "big band" that featured a Gene Dinwiddie-arranged horn section and by the late '60s included Ralph Walsh (guitar), Rod Hicks (bass), Ted Harris (piano), and George Davidson (drums). Seasoned in blues, jazz, and R&B, the group assembled at L.A.'s Troubadour club in March of 1970 to play the gigs recorded for this release.

In addition to the material from the original 1971 Todd Rundgren-produced double LP, this expanded release contains a second disc of previously unreleased performances from the same series of shows at The Troubadour.

The Butterfield Blues Band Live is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 2,500 copies. 1, 2, 3.

ASH GRUNWALD - Fish Out Of Water (2008)

Aussie singer Ash Grunwald first came into the limelight in 2002 when his first solo album, Introducing Ash Grunwald, was released to critical acclaim. Two years later, Grunwald released his sophomore album, I Don't Believe, (HERE: 1, 2.) which garnered an ARIA award nomination for Best Blues and Roots Album and various other accolades including the Victorian Blues award for Male Vocalist Of The Year. The release cemented his place as one of the country's most popular Blues and Roots singer with a formidable fan base desperately looking forward to a new release while the singer tried his hand as a radio DJ with Triple J from mid 2005 to late 2006. Well, the wait for a brand new album is finally over with the highly anticipated full length studio release, Fish Out Of Water - arguably Grunwald's most adventurous, exciting and accessible album yet. *

McCOY TYNER - Guitars (2008)

Alfred McCoy Tyner is a jazz pianist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet and a long solo career. It's amazing that the concept of McCoy Tyner recording with a guitarist has never come up before. After all, the legendary piano man has done just about everything else, with and without former employer, saxophonist John Coltrane. Now we have "Guitars", which mixes Tyner and a Hall of Fame rhythm section with a truly diverse group of string-driven all-stars. The result is an engrossing chronicle of the artist's process. In many respects, "Guitars" is a study in fearlessness. Other than the fact that they play stringed instruments, there is little that links the session's five guest players, and this theoretically puts Tyner in a different creative space with each new arrival. Also, while some of the tracks are either written by Tyner or associated with him, all the music was sested by Tyner's guests. Again in theory, those conditions should give the guest artists the advantage in the session. Unfortunately for the guests, that theory falls to the ground in the face of Tyner's aforementioned rhythm section—bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette.

Michael Katon is the heaviest practitioner of true American roadhouse rock ’n’ roll and blues working today. His sound is raw, mean and spirited, combining lowdown blues and boogie with the amped-up approach of the highest energy rock ’n’ roll band you’d care to name. Katon’s guitar playing is informed with the nastiest and tastiest tones imaginable with torrential slide work and astonishing string bending capabilities. His relentless energy and dedication to pouring every ounce of soul into the music is perhaps best described by an astounded fellow guitarist who said, ”Katon won’t stop beating on a guitar until he’s squeezed every last thing he can possibly get out of it. That guitar is glad to go back in the case at the end of the night, believe me.” *

“Pure rock-n-roll beating from a blues heart as earnest as they come--a place where roots run deep and the roadhouse is always open.” - from his official site

SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK & BNOIS KING - Roadhouse Research (2003)

08. Make It Right
09. I Need More
10. Standing In My Door

If the 10 years these Texas guitarists have spent as a team exploring the world bar by bar has been "research," what they've learned is how to please a crowd. The formula's simple: no-frills songs about women and working for a livin', set to meat-and-potatoes arrangements that leave plenty of room for their guitars to roam. Kubek's six-string snarls the loudest, hitting Albert Collins-style sustains and grinding out beefy chords. King skirts around the fringes with his sweet-toned, jazz-informed fills or works at groove-level, anchoring things with his basic, chopping, R&B-style chording. King's vocals are really his trump card. They're smooth and slinky when he's romancing in "Make It Right" or gravelly as Kubek's fluid guitar when he's a driven man in numbers like "Runnin' Blind." The album ends with the kind of guitar grand finale that sets a crowd on fire just after last call. The tune, "Standing in My Door," lets both six-stringers sting. Bnois King lays down a red carpet of sliding chords and Smokin' Joe struts through, doing his own dirty take on B.B. King's vibrato-laden style, bending notes and letting them sing. Then Bnois take the lead, his cleaner fretboard diction cutting even closer to B.B.'s lines before he returns to the microphone to sing the closing chorus. Fans of the Lone Star State's blues guitar tradition need to check these guys out. *

Joe Kubek and Bnois King have been tearing it up on the blues circuit since they first got together in 1989. Roadhouse Research brilliantly contrasts Joe's blazing blues/rock guitar with Bnois' jazz-inflected playing and soulful vocals.

CANDYE KANE - Swango (1998)

Candye Kane's sole major-label release, 1998's Swango, isn't one of her best albums. Producer Mike Vernon (who had run the famous U.K. blues-rock label Blue Horizon in the '60s) uses the then-current swing revival to reduce the more authentic jump blues elements of Kane's earlier records. The result is a kind of hipsterrific cocktail-nation cloyingness that makes Kane seem like a novelty act. Kane is singing better than ever, especially on the opening statement of intent, "200 Pounds of Fun," and a terrific version of the standard "Dream a Little Dream of Me," and her songwriting is growing increasingly sharper as well. The title track's a particular gem. (Longtime fans will be disappointed to find, however, that this is by far Kane's least-bawdy record.) So really, the fault comes down to the stiff arrangements and inappropriate production; look past those and Swango is an appealing, entertaining record. It may take a few listens to get to that point, however. ~ All Music Guide *

Rita Engedalen is an amazing blues artist from Norway. Rita’s influences are mostly American folk music from districts and areas not very familiar to the mainstream audiences. Dusty roads, back and forth from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi Delta are areas she travels musically. Her intense nerve, her strong and rich voice mixed with deeply rooted soul form her personal musical expression. Many songs rooted in Rita’s musical landscape are often formed upon a simple, repetitive chord progression with intensely felt emotions and the raw power of trance. Making songs in these musical terms is for Rita very natural; she’s actually a natural born master.

ERIC BIBB - Friends (2004)

Friends is the accurate and revealing title for New York bluesman Eric Bibb's tenth album since 1997. There are 15 cuts here, each of them featuring rootsy folk and blues collaborations with different "friends" in differing small group settings. The set starts with a killer acoustic slide duet between Bibb and Guy Davis on the net "99 ˝ Won't Do." The contrast between Davis' sweet and smoky delivery and Bibb's husky wail akin to Blind Willie Johnson's in places -- offers a double-sided dimension in interpretation for the listener, as well. Elsewhere, Charlie Musselwhite gives a killer snaky harmonica performance on "Six O' Clock Blues." Taj Mahal makes two appearances; one in a duet on "Goin' Down Slow," and one in a trio with Bibb and Malian guitarist Djelimady Tounkara on a medley of the traditional "Kulanjan" and Bibb's own "Sebastian's Tune." Speaking of Mali, and Mahal, Bibb also covers the elder bluesman's classic "Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes," with the great kora player Mamadou Diabate that rivals the original. There's also a gorgeous version of Guy and Susanna Clark's "The Cape," with guitarist Martin Simpson, Bibb's moving "For You" with Ruthie Foster, and "Tain't No Such Thing," a bright new folk song written and sung with legendary folksinger Odetta. Mohan Veena ace Harry Manx performs with Bibb on the high lonesome, droning blues of "Needed Time," and with Kristina Olsen on her "If I Stayed." The set closes with the tender "Dance Me to the End of Love," (an original, not the Leonard Cohen tune) with the Lovin' Spoonful's Jerry Yester playing piano. In addition to the many performers on this collection, there are 15 different engineers! Given that most records of this type are mixed bags at best, with "star-studded" collabs serving to muck up or water down rather than enhance performances, Friends is an anomaly. There is nothing that's obvious or overblown here, everything is subtly shaded, and the performers serve the songs and not themselves. The listener gets no sense of back-patting or self-congratulation, only the great pleasure of hearing this music in a revealing, emotionally honest way. Bravo. ~ All Music Guide
