NEIL YOUNG - Sugar Mountain:
Live At Canterbury House 1968 (2008)

Neil Young was just a few days shy of his 23rd birthday when he took the stage at the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Mich., for what would become a legendary performance. It was 1968, and Young was about to release his self-titled debut solo album. His old band, Buffalo Springfield, had split up six months earlier, and few people even knew who Young was. But to his own surprise, and to the surprise of the Canterbury House, Young drew a sold-out audience.

For many years "Sugar Mountain" was a coveted non-LP B side — a Neil Young ballad about childhood's end written before he was out of his teens and taped during this solo engagement shortly before the release of his first solo LP. The song was a rare flick of retrospect. Young charges forward here, playing half of the imminent Neil Young in pristine, tremulous-vocal form and reclaiming six of his Buffalo Springfield songs, including "Expecting to Fly," majestically scored for 1967's Buffalo Springfield Again yet as powerful here without a stitch of strings. 1, 2.

07. Gone Too Long
08. Garbage Man
09. Crawling King Snake
10. Louisiana Style
11. It Takes A Long Time
12. Hot Tamale Baby

This is by far the best album this Louisiana blues/swamp-rocker has come up with to date. Benoit is playing with basically a three-piece, with Doug Therrien on bass and Allyn Robinson on drums. The rest of the sound is filled in by various guests, some exceedingly strong Louisiana players. Therein lives both the problem and the strength of this disc the sound is a bit thin when there's no guest taking up some space. Only on the slow burner "Heart of Stone" and "Gone Too Long" does the basic band fill up the airwaves. The music is good, but without that fourth player, it doesn't have enough density. When there is another player, the sound is as gritty and raw as they come Cajun-based blues with a swampy sensuality. Benoit's singing and guitar playing have taken giant steps forward and are up there with the best. ~ All Music Guide

10. At Last

In 1959 producer Clyde Otis teamed his two favorite singers, the seasoned jazz star Dinah Washington and the young R&B crooner Brook Benton, in the studio and came up with two top-10 pop hits from the resulting album, The Two of Us. Washington is Diane Schuur's biggest hero, and the young jazz vocalist wanted to do her own version of The Two of Us. She found an unexpected but appropriate partner in B.B. King, who is best known for the blues, of course, but who also has experience with the kind of jazz, country, and R&B standards Schuur had in mind for the project. The result is Heart to Heart, a duet album that brings out the best of both singers. Schuur's tendency to oversing is held in check by the rootsy nature of the material and King's down-to-earth presence in the studio. And King gets a chance to stretch out beyond his usual repertoire and show how well he can croon on numbers like Irving Berlin's "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket" and Harry Warren's "At Last." - amazon.com

Throughout the years, rock music has been littered with talented musicians whose lives were cut short due to drug-related deaths. Free/Back Street Crawler guitarist Paul Kossoff was one such casualty. Kossoff died from a drug-induced heart attack while on a plane flight from Los Angeles to New York at the age of 25. A 2 CD set comprising the earliest known recordings of Paul Kossoff.Taped at rehearsals with Black Cat Bones in London in 1967, the raw lo-fi tracks find the teenager already a master of his instrument. Accompanied by musicians including Derek and Stuart Brooks, and featuring a guest appearance from Paul Rodgers.

THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND - Soul Serenade (2003)

01. Soul Serenade - Rasta Man Chant
02. Bock to Bock
03. Drown in My Own Tears
04. Afro Blue
05. Elvin
06. Oriental Folk Song
07. Sierra Leone

It would be wrong to pigeonhole Derek Trucks as a southern rocker despite his ongoing day gig as the Allman Brothers Band's second guitarist. On his fourth solo album (actually recorded before his third, 2002's Joyful Noise) the young slinger shows what he's made of, and it's not barbeque and bourbon. Instead Trucks caters more to the martini crowd, giving a sophisticated cast to his slide guitar, snaking it into elegant musical conversations with a rather frivolous flute, and some off time drumming that are reminiscent of the clean jazz fusion that Traffic used to conjure up. On the opening track, "Soul Serenade"/"Rasta Man Chant," Trucks inserts some of the languid licks and flirts with Miles Davis before devolving into Bob Marley. "Bock to Bock" is a more structured affair that recalls Henry Mancini. Gregg Allman sits in on "Drown in My Own Tears" and spits out the bitter words in his grizzled voice while Truck follows along in a perfect slow dance, punctuating each of the singer's phrases with his own mournful slide. Trucks ventures south of the border in "Afro Romp" and the band evokes the great jazz drummer Elvin Jones on "Elvin." - amazon.com

THE ROLLING STONES - Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! (1970)

01. Jumpin' Jack Flash
02. Carol
03. Stray Cat Blues
04. Love In Vain
05. Midnight Rambler
06. Sympathy For The Devil
07. Live With Me
08. Little Queenie
09. Honky Tonk Woman
10. Street Fighting Man

Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain." Having been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, new guitarist Mick Taylor parlayed his experience into some impressive slide guitar work. The pičce-de-resistance of what is arguably the best live Rolling Stones recording is the eight-minute-plus reading of "Midnight Rambler." Between Mick Jagger's unearthly harmonica playing and the tight interplay between Taylor and Keith Richards, the sinister vibe emanating from this song was eerie, foreshadowing the tragedy that would occur at Altamont less than two weeks later. Observant fans will catch the cover's subtle visual reference to a certain lyric from Bob Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" from BLONDE ON BLONDE. - amazon.com

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE BLUES (2005)

The Encyclopedia of the Blues provides a historical, musical, and cultural foundation for the study of blues music. It traces musical and cultural trends engendered by the blues and the aspects of the music industry and of American society that helped to nurture those trends. The blues is a uniquely American form, and thus the majority of the individuals discussed are American; however, as many entries will address, the blues has grown far beyond its regional origins to become a form of entertainment and self-expression for all races, classes, and nationalities.

KISS - Alive I & II

KISS is an American rock band formed in New York City in December 1972. Easily identified by its members' trademark face paint and stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid and late-1970s on the basis of their elaborate live performances, which featured fire breathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars, and pyrotechnics. Kiss has been awarded 24 gold albums to date. The group's worldwide sales easily exceed 80 million albums.

Alive! was Kiss' fourth album and is considered their breakthrough, as well as a landmark for live albums. Released on September 10, 1975, the double-disc set contained live versions of selected tracks from their first three studio albums, Kiss, Hotter Than Hell, and Dressed to Kill. It peaked at #9 on the album charts. The album charted for 110 weeks, by far the longest in the band's history. Approximately two years after the album's release, it was certified Platinum, and the band received their Platinum awards on stage at the Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI (the site of the album's recording). In 2003, the album was ranked number 159 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. 1, 2.

GOV'T MULE - Life Before Insanity (2000)

TRACKS:
01. Wandering Child 02. Life Before Insanity 03. Bad Little Doggie 04. Lay Your Burden Down 05. Fallen Down 06. World Gone Wild 07. Tastes Like Wine 08. I Think You Know What I Mean 09. Far Away 10. No Need To Suffer 11. In My Life - If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day

"Life Before Insanity" is their fifth record, but only their third studio effort, and it's their sharpest work even though they've always been the most focused of all the jam-oriented ensembles. They've managed to craft a diverse and hardy 74-minute album, using a variety of moods, structures, textures, and time signatures, without ever really straying from their robust core sound. One minute Warren Haynes is trading searing licks with Ben Harper, the next he's deep inside a beautiful acoustic ballad, then he's blistering through a Robert Johnson cover with steely slide guitar. As with any hard-rock band worth their weight, there's a bit of arena-rock drama, but it's inevitable when you match brains and muscle. It is the last album recorded with founding member Allen Woody, who died shortly after its release.

YVONNE ELLIMAN - The Collection (1999)

Yvonne Elliman had a brief moment in the spotlight during the middle of the '70s, yet she appeared on many of the decade's biggest hits as a backing singer. While she was in high school in Hawaii, Elliman sang in a group called We Folk. She moved to London in 1969 and began singing at the Pheasantry folk club, located on Kings Road in Chelsea. It was here that songwriters Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice discovered her. The duo offered her the role of Mary Magdalene in their new rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar; the role brought her instant fame. Elliman played the Magdalene character in the film version of Superstar, for which she won a Golden Globe award; it also gave her a hit with "I Don't Know How to Love Him." The hit single became the title of her debut album, which was released in 1972. Pete Townshend helped Elliman prepare her second album, 1973's Food of Love. During this time, she appeared in the American production of Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway, where she met Bill Oakes, the president of RSO Records; the two married soon afterward. Oakes introduced her to Eric Clapton, inviting her to sing backup vocals on "I Shot the Sheriff." Elliman became part of the guitarist's band afterward; she stayed with him for five years.

She joined RSO's roster in 1975, releasing the Steve Cropper-produced Rising Sun. Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb wrote the title song for Elliman's next album, 1976's Love Me; the song became a U.K. hit, paving the way for her greatest chart success, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The Bee Gees wrote several songs on the soundtrack specifically for Elliman, including the number one single "If I Can't Have You." She never followed through on the song's success -- she released two more albums before becoming solely a session musician. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2.

Hot Tuna is an American blues-rock band, formed by bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen as a spin-off of Jefferson Airplane. They play acoustic and electric versions of original and traditional blues songs. Hot Tuna began by opening Jefferson Airplane concerts, giving Kaukonen and Casady an opportunity to explore their love of traditional blues music. As Jefferson Airplane slowly wound down in the early 1970s, Hot Tuna for whom live performance was always of prime importance became an independent group. Their early repertoire was derived mainly from American country blues artists such as Rev. Gary Davis, Jelly Roll Morton, Bo Carter and Arthur Blake (Blind Blake). Originally a duo, Casady and Kaukonen added Will Scarlett on harmonica and released a live album in 1970, Hot Tuna. This album was recorded in the fall of 1969 at the New Orleans House in Berkeley and is affectionately known by Tunaphiles as the "breaking glass album", because of the sound of breaking beer glasses during the recording of "Uncle Sam Blues". This LP was followed by a long series of well received albums that played mostly to a small but devoted cult following. Aside from the six year breakup after 1978, Hot Tuna have continued to perform to the present day, and still performs much of the aforementioned country blues repertoire with which they began.

Francis Rossi is co-founder of the English rock band Status Quo, in which he sings lead vocals and plays lead guitar. Anyone who has had the privalege of seeing Francis Rossi playing live will know what a talented guitarist and vocalist the Status Quo frontman really is. King of the Doghouse is a throughly enjoyable diversion from mainstream Status Quo yet with all the riffs and influences evident for diehard fans to enjoy. From the jaunty 'Give myself to love' to the slower 'Wherever you Go' that will linger on the mind long after hearing the song, all of the tracks are recordings of the highest calibre. Just to remind the listener of his Status Quo loyalties, 'Someone show me home' covered from the 'If You Can't Stand The Heat' Album demonstrates what a talented musician Mr Rossi really is.

VAN HALEN I & II

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

Van Halen is a hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California in 1972. They enjoyed success from the release of their self titled debut album in 1978. As of 2007 Van Halen has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide and have had the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. During the 1980's they also had more Billboard Hot 100 hits than any other hard rock, heavy metal band of the decade. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Van Halen is the 19th best selling band/artist of all time with sales of over 56 million albums in the USA and is one of five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the USA.

"Van Halen" is the self-titled debut album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1978. It has sold over ten million copies in the United States alone and is one of the most successful debuts by a hard rock band, remaining on the Billboard charts for over three years- a total of 162 weeks. Along with 1984, it gives Van Halen two original (non-greatest hits) albums with Diamond status in sales. *

TRACKS: 01. Runnin' With The Devil 02. Eruption 03. You Really Got Me 04. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love 05. I'm The One 06. Jamie's Cryin' 07. Atomic Punk 08. Feel Your Love Tonight 09. Little Dreamer 10. Ice Cream Man 11. On Fire

"Van Halen II" is the second album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1979. The actual recording of the album took place less than a year after the release of the eponymous "I" album. Many of the songs on this album have been known to exist prior to the release of the first album, and are present (in various forms) on the demos recorded in 1975 by Gene Simmons and 1977 by Ted Templemann, including an early version of "Beautiful Girls" (then known as "Bring on the Girls") and "Somebody Get Me a Doctor." (The album version is only slightly different than the demo versions.) The black and yellow guitar on the back of the album is buried with Dimebag Darrell. Eddie Van Halen placed it in his casket at his funeral because Dimebag had said it was his favorite.[1] However, Eddie himself stated in interviews that the guitar itself was not actually used on the Van Halen II album; as it had only been completed just in time for the photo shoots for the second album. David Lee Roth is shown in a cast in the inner liner notes, as he allegedly broke his heel making the leap on the back cover. *

WISHBONE ASH

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

It’s a milestone year for Wishbone Ash as they tear up the highway and cut loose in the studio. In 2008, British twin-lead guitar band Wishbone Ash® celebrates 39 years of rock ’n’ roll in true Ash fashion: touring, touring and more touring – in Turkey, Germany, Holland the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Plans are also under way to record a new studio album and to release a live CD.

Wishbone Ash can trace its origins back to Torquay, Devon, England, a seaside resort in the southwest of the country. It was here that Martin Turner and Steve Upton first performed together; Turner on bass, Upton on drums, before moving to London in 1969 to seek fame and fortune. It was in the capital that the decision was made to place an advert for a keyboard player and a lead guitarist. The resulting audition threw up 2 guitar leads but nobody could decide who to choose and the trademark twin lead sound of Wishbone Ash was born. Ted (David) Turner and Andy Powell soon went through the poverty and growing pains of a new band but were fortunate that Miles Copeland was championing their cause and a fairly rapid progression was achieved. The first Album - Wishbone Ash was released in Dec 1970 and their second - Pilgrimage surfaced just 6 months later to reach no 6 in the NME charts. Great things were just 11 months away with the release of Argus - possibly the band’s best album - certainly their most commercially successful - reached number 2 in the UK charts and went gold. The next album Wishbone 4, again only 12 months on, went silver.

JOHN LODGE - Natural Avenue (1977)

This 1996 reissue of the Moody Blues' esteemed guitarist's 1977 solo effort reminds listeners of various important things. First, that he's a great rocker who enjoys an inspirational, jamming tune that can flash his electric prowess, as on the locomotive "Natural Avenue." Second, that once a Moody, always a Moody, as every song to a certain extent has that ethereal, orchestral flair to it, and incorporating this can be sappy or effective, depending on the strength of the tune ("Summer Breeze" is a bit on the melodramatic side). And finally, that Justin Hayward was and is the lead singer for a good reason. Lodge has a serviceable voice, and charms effectively on kindly ballads like "Carry Me," but there's an airy quality to his delivery that skims over the potentially deeper emotions of each tune. The album is best listened to as a nostalgia session because many of the cheesier '70s production techniques were employed, dating it pretty severely. Perhaps the fact that Lodge's solo career never fully took off is something we should be grateful for; had it, the Moody Blues might not have endured intact so many decades beyond their original heyday. ~ All Music Guide

JUSTIN HAYWARD - Live In San Juan Capistrano (1998)

Justin Hayward is an English musician, best known as a singer, guitarist and composer in the rock band, The Moody Blues. Hayward's career as a solo artist began in 1977 with the release of Songwriter, which displayed a somewhat leaner and more lively, acoustically textured sound than his work with the Moody Blues. He followed this up in 1980 with Night Flight, a major departure from his work with the group, with very much of a belated disco sound. During the next several years, Hayward devoted much of his attention to the revived Moody Blues, who had a full touring and recording schedule in front of them. His Moving Mountains (1985) was strongly reminiscent of his earlier work with the band from the start of the 1970s. Since then, when he is not working with the band and writing new material (his "Your Wildest Dreams" reached number nine in America in 1986), Hayward seems to devote his time to reviving older Moody Blues songs in solo settings, as on the 1994 release Classic Blue in which he sings Moody Blues songs with orchestral accompaniment. A guitarist of great skill and a unique sound, Hayward remained one of the few stars of the 1960s who retained a devoted international following into the 1990s, though most critics, as with the Moody Blues, had ceased to consider him a serious contemporary artist. ~ All Music Guide 1, 2.

JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT - No Quarter (1994)

The long awaited reunion between Page and Plant occurred on a 90 minute "UnLedded" MTV project, recorded in Morocco, Wales, and London, which rated highly on network television. It was not a reunion of Led Zeppelin, however, as former bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones was not present. In fact, Jones was not even told about the reunion by his former band members. He later commented that he was unhappy about Plant and Page naming the album after "No Quarter", a Led Zeppelin song which was largely his work. In addition to acoustic numbers, the album features a reworking of Led Zeppelin classics, along with four Middle-Eastern and Moroccan-influenced songs: "City Don't Cry," "Yallah," (or "The Truth Explodes") "Wonderful One," and "Wah Wah". 1, 2.

The album was #4 on debut on the Billboard's Pop Albums chart.

HUMBLE PIE - Live At The Whisky A-Go-Go '69 (2001)

01. For Your Love
02. Shakin' All Over
03. Hallelujah I Love Her So
04. The Sad Bag of Shakey Jake
05. I Walk On Gilded Splinters

This live 1969 performance from Humble Pie's first American tour features Greg Ridley ( ex-Spooky Tooth) on bass, Peter Frampton on guitar, Steve Marriot as frontman and Jerry Shirley on drums. Featuring five rock-a-boogie inspired jams, this UK Folk Rock super-group wound up its tour at LA's famed Whisky nightclub. The opening number is an all-acoustic reworking of Graham Gouldman's "For Your Love," a showcase for Peter Frampton's acoustic guitar and Steve Marriott's soul shouting, and about as different as one could imagine from the compact, punchy Yardbirds rendition. The drums and the harder playing kicks in for "Shakin' All Over," which is similarly bent out of its familiar shape and pushed Frampton and Marriott's guitars and vocals are all over the map on the song, which is just about recognizable despite the absence of the familiar central guitar riff. "Hallelujah I Love Her So" and "The Sad Bag of Shakey Jake" are intact and nicely played, and are what one would expect and hope for from an actual live album. The finale, "I Walk on Gilded Splinters," is an extended jam that goes through a few interesting changes, but it just doesn't have the energy or cohesion to sustain its 20-minute length. The overall audio quality is above average for a live recording of this vintage, and the multi-track tapes were mixed under the supervision of surviving bandmember Jerry Shirley. It's not a truly great moment in the band's history, alas, but it is a flawed artifact of an early chapter in that history. ~ All Music Guide

MOUNTAIN - Flowers Of Evil (1971)

Highlights of the studio side remain the album opening title track, as well as the Cream-like (and appropriately titled) blues rocker, "Crossroader." Mountain were always known for their larger than life concerts, and the live tracks capture the band in all its electrified boogie glory, a 25-minute medley centered around a cover of "Roll Over Beethoven," which weaves in and out of other jams, as well as a run through of their best known song, "Mississippi Queen." Mountain's second release of 1971 (and fourth release in only a two year span), FLOWERS OF EVIL, would turn out to be the band's final studio release before starting a cycle of splitting up and reuniting. Comprising equal amounts of all new studio material and live recordings, FLOWERS OF EVIL contains several Mountain gems.

Flowers of Evil is the third album by American hard rock band Mountain. It was their first live outing, with the second vinyl side consisting of material recorded at New York City's legendary Fillmore East in 1971. 1, 2.

Mountain: Leslie West (vocals, guitar); Felix Pappalardi (vocals, bass); Steve Knight (keyboards); Corky Laing (drums).

TRACKS:

FOCUS - In And Out Of Focus (1970)

Reissue of 1970 debut album for Dutch progressive rock act best known for their 1973 hit single 'Hocus Pocus'. We all have the power to change the future, and it starts with dreaming about a world different—better—than the one we presently live in. That was Focus's message in 1970 on "Why Dream." The rest of the album explores a variety of themes, some fanciful, some serious. The song "Black Beauty" is a majesty blend of progressive rock and classic romanticism; "Happy Nightmare" is a trippy journey through the downside of halucination; and "Sugar Island" takes another kind of trip, this time to Caribbean-flavored rock/pop. In and Out of Focus also introduces "House Of The King ," which would become one of Focus's best-loved tunes. Overall, the album is nice melodic progressive rock throughout and is one of the group's best albums. *

TRACKS:
01. Focus (Vocal) 02. Black Beauty 03. Sugar Island 04. Anonymus 05. House Of The King 06. Happy Nightmare (Mescaline) 07. Why Dream 08. Focus (Instrumental)

THE WHO - Live At Leeds (1970) DELUXE EDITION 2001

In addition to making some of the finest studio albums in rock history (ranging in approach from proto-pop-punk to the first rock operas), the Who, live, epitomized the brash, electrifying energy that put a new face on the music in the 1960s. The original LIVE AT LEEDS album, released in 1970, looked straight into the eye of this hurricane on a single disc featuring six tracks. A 1995 reissue doubled the number of songs. The DELUXE EDITION, however, released in 2001, is the first document to feature the Leeds concert in its entirety. Spread out over two discs, this most recent update is definitive, and includes a 28-page booklet, sections of band-audience banter, and most importantly a full performance of TOMMY. The sound, enhanced here in a new mix supervised by guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend, is crystalline, without losing any of the group's swirling chaos and bone-crushing sonic impact. Though the Who later began to abridge TOMMY live, disc two features the entire opera, while the first disc houses "Substitute," "My Generation," and a blood-pumping cover of "Summertime Blues," among other singles. For any Who fan, this edition is essential.

This 2-CD Deluxe Edition of LIVE AT LEEDS, recorded on February 14, 1970, contains the entire show including all of TOMMY which was previously unreleased. Recorded live at Leeds University, Leeds, England on February 14, 1970. Originally released on Decca in May 1970. 1, 2, 3.

Girlschool are a long-running British all-female heavy metal band originating out of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene. Girlschool had their greatest success in the early '80s, and instead of resting on their laurels and being content touring and playing their greatest hits, they've written some really strong new material. Several songs on Legacy are as catchy as any of their '80s hits. The album gets off to a really strong start with tracks that are simple, straightforward metal with great riffs and memorable hooks. There's a bit of a lull in the middle, but Girlschool finishes strong. "I Spy" is featured twice on the album, once with Girlschool's Kim McAuliffe singing, and then as a bonus track with Ronnie James Dio on vocals.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL - A Perfect Stranger - The Island Anthology (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Who could have predicted in the '60s that Marianne Faithfull, at the time Mick Jagger's beautiful and scandalous actress girlfriend, would one day emerge as our greatest interpretive singer? The evidence can be heard on this extensive two-disc retrospective. After a decade and a half of recording everything from '60s pop covers culled from the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, country music, and pensive singer-songwriters, Marianne Faithfull signed with Island Records as a reinvented new-wave punk queen. With sharpened edge at the ready, she cut 1978's Broken English, a harrowing purge of sexual jealousy and guilt, six cuts from which are featured here. Her voice, ravaged from years of excess, cracks with wasted beauty and lent tarnished experience to her tales of strle and hopeless nostalgia. After several albums of modern pop (a healthy selection from all are included in this essential anthology), Faithfull hooked up with producer Hal Willner to record 1987's Strange Weather, adopting a new role as an ageless, bluesy chanteuse. A Perfect Stranger follows through her latest collaboration with Angelo Badalamenti (1995's A Secret Life) and features six previously unreleased tracks, including a cover of John Lennon's "Isolation" and "A Waste of Time," a song she cowrote with Steve Winwood. 1, 2, 3, 4,

MELANIE - Paled By Dimmer Light (2004)thumbupthumbupthumbup

This is a superb album by Melanie who is among America's finest singer/songwriters. She is much, much more than "Brand New Key" and this is her finest album in years. This is THE Melanie album to purchase! She is up-to-date and there is nothing on this album which will take you back to the Woodstock era. Every song is a highlight. She can sing up-beat songs such as "I Tried to Die Young", "Nothing is Real", "Smile" as well as heartfelt songs with power such as "Extraordinary"and "Elements". Perhaps the finest song is "The Ballad of Crazy Love". I love this album and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Forget all the compilations of her earlier material and meet Melanie for the first time by buying"Paled By Dimmer Light".Like all great artists, Melanie has evolved. She is an extraordinary talent and this album proves it. Time has not diminished the power and subtleties of her superb voice or her songwriting skills. I recommend to check out her website melaniemusic.net and itsaboutmusic.com for further information. In the meantime, meet Melanie for the First time with "Paled By Dimmer Light". - amazon.com

For three years Melanie, who became the voice of an era in one magical instant onstage at Woodstock, has been putting the pieces in order. This album is a kind of rebirth - an ignition of the creative energies with which she had first conquered the musical world. She has, in short, lived a rare life. But all of it was just a prelude to what's about to come. There's something new in "Paled by Dimmer Light".

"I feel like a person who's never been heard" she declares. "Maybe people think they've heard me, but they never really have. I'm a new artist. I'm having so much fun with my voice - a person shouldn't be allowed to have so much fun." Meet Melanie again - for the very first time.

CARLY SIMON - No Secrets (1972)

05. We Have No Secrets

08. It Was So Easy
09. Night Owl
10. When You Close Your Eyes

Carly Simon's third album, 1972's "No Secrets", was her best-selling release ever, thanks to the inclusion of the huge hit single "You're So Vain." Speculation persists over the identity of the person so deftly skewered in this song (Simon's been quoted as saying that while there's elements of various people in the lyrics, "there's nothing there that isn't true of Warren Beatty"), to such an extent that the excellence of the rest of the album is often overlooked. Besides the gospel-tinged hit "The Right Thing to Do" and a moving tribute to the Carter Family, "We Have No Secrets" is a confessional delight, and "Waited So Long" and James Taylor's "Night Owl" are two of the most rocking songs Simon ever recorded. Exquisitely produced and smartly sequenced, "No Secrets" has just the right balance of slick studio polish and soulful rough edges to make this a classic of '70s singer-songwriter pop.

10. The Power Of Dreams

For much of her 12th studio album, Joan Armatrading sounds like she is ending a bad relationship, but by the last two songs she sounds like she's beginning a good one. Still, she finds herself pledging herself to someone she worries may not have the same commitment she does. Thus, perhaps the album's signal song (and Armatrading's first UK chart single in five years) is "More Than One Kind Of Love," in which she touts the value of friendship over romance: "Good friendships seldom die," she sings, and we are painfully aware that, especially in Armatrading's world, even good love affairs seldom live. Still, this is less a revelation than an incremental development in the artist's work, and Hearts And Flowers doesn't contain any songs that rank among her best. - allmusic.com

This 1998 disc from Joni Mitchell harks back to the days when she heard the hissing of summer lawns and the jazzier essays of her Hejira days. The only difference between then and now is her use of a guitar synthesizer for her aural textures and melody templates. Always employing the best of musicians to help her out, Mitchell takes off on a trip through "Harlem in Havana" and ending up with "Tiger Bones" to show for it. Along the way, she puts forth "No Apologies" and rocks things up with "Lead Balloon" (which will remind one of "Big Yellow Taxi"), and contains one of her best opening one-liners ever. With "Taming the Tiger" dedicated to her newfound daughter and grandson, "Stay in Touch" could be about them, or almost anyone Mitchell's been close to. Either way, it's a great tune. Taming the Tiger is her most pleasing and consistent disc since the mid-'70s; even after all these years, Joni Mitchell continues to expand her music while keeping her integrity intact. This is definitely one of her best. ~ All Music Guide

Everything about Coverdale/Page, right down to the goofy copping of the Presence artwork, is an attempt to recapture the pompous majesty of Led Zeppelin. It doesn't succeed, of course, but it does leave all of the Zep clones in the dust. Although Jimmy Page plays better here than he has since 1979's In Through the Out Door, there is a conspicuous lack of solos. If you've never liked David Coverdale, his performance will not change your opinion. Both fare better on the rockers; the power ballads tend be slightly tedious. Essentially, Coverdale/Page never quite rivals the bold experimentation of Led Zeppelin, yet at its best moments, it's a guilty pleasure. ~ All Music Guide

ROXY PERRY - In My Own Sweet Time (2008)

A child prodigy, Roxy started out fronting swing bands at the famous Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, New York and performed her first major concert at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California at age 9. In her early teens, she began fronting her own bands. By her late teens, she was working six nights a week with her 10-piece soul band at the Peppermint Lounge on 45th Street and Times Square in New York City. It was there that she was discovered and did her first studio recording as a back-up vocalist. This led to her going on tour for four years with the pop-rock band, Dawn, representing their hits of the time. The band headlined concert tours with Kenny Rogers, The Carpenters, Rare Earth, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Iron Butterfly, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mike Nesmith, Mark Lindsay and many others. In the ‘80’s an EP was released on Personal Records, produced by Richie Cordell, which was high on the Billboard charts for two months. Roxy launched her blues career in the late ‘80’s, when she quickly became known for her exciting live performances at clubs, concert halls and festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad and won her reputation as “the real deal” through her riveting live performances and highly acclaimed CDs in blues and jazz circles worldwide. 1, 2.

BONUS TRACKS:
11. Blues Like Midnight
12. Hellbound Train

In his brief liner essay, Kim Simmonds whose name is synonymous with Savoy Brown, having founded the group and been its only constant member says that this record is a return to basics without artifice, gimmicks, or varnish. OK. Fair enough. But if this is back to the raw blues for Simmonds and company on his millionth album, then why does it sound so polished? Steel's sound is very clean, and its approach to songs is, too the Lowell Fulsom tune "Monday Morning Blues" that opens the set is all but unrecognizable, having had all of its tough R&B and soul taken away to create a guitar wanker's trio approach. There's plenty of wah-wah, speaking of no artifice. Savoy's rumbling slide guitar craziness of old is back on Simmonds' boogie "Long as I've Got You," with its stinging slide guitar and plenty of amplifier distortion. The guitarist, who also functions unfortunately as the band's vocalist (what one wouldn't give for a Chris Youlden or Lonesome Dave Peverett up front instead of this monotone monotony), wrote or co-wrote six of the ten cuts here. "You Don't Do Thing for Me" is more of a rock tune ŕ la Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane than a Savoy boogie. It's a great cut, though. The reading of Pee Wee Crayton's "Daybreak" is musically commendable for the soft-handed touch Simmonds took with the verse though the guitar screams elsewhere but the vocal is so drenched in drudgery that it feels more like the tune should be called "Hungover Daybreak." Ultimately, if you are a fan of Savoy Brown, and this means a die-hard fan since there have been so many changes with the band, this just may be the return to form you were looking for but Jack the Toad, Hellbound Train, or Getting to the Point this ain't. Everybody else will continue to celebrate Simmonds' ability with a guitar while longing for a real vocalist to recharge this blues-rock dinosaur.

STEELY DAN - Aja (1977)

History gives Steely Dan's Walter Becker and Donald Fagen the last, hearty laugh on this, the crown jewel in their remarkable canon of '70s Mensa pop. Sneaking onto the charts a half-decade earlier with sinuous, jazz-inflected "rock," the dysfunctional duo's acerbic, anti-heroic visions had been critically lauded for their band identity and killer guitar riffs, then promptly challenged when the two songwriters retired from the road, dissolved any formal band lineup, and used the studio as laboratory. Aja carried the added indignity of its increased focus on sophisticated jazz models and musicianship, which carried the Dan's ambitions even further in terms of suave harmonies, intricate song structures, and brilliant playing. Time has proven them wiser than their rock crit detractors: These seven songs abound in knotty plots, sneaky imagery, and drop-dead brilliant performances from a blue chip studio repertory studded with first-call jazz players epitomized by Wayne Shorter's towering solo on the title song. From the hard-boiled jazz romance of "Deacon Blues" to the twisted Homeric vamp of "Home at Last," the veiled but ominous swing of "Peg" to the sci-fi eroticism of "Josie," Aja is a modern pop classic and the coolest fusion record no one ever thought to lump in that category.

Originally released in 1977, it became the group's best-selling album. Topping at #3 on the U.S. charts and #5 in the United Kingdom, it was the band's first platinum album, eventually going platinum twice. In July 1978, the album won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording. It has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. In 2003, the album was ranked number 145 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

THE DARKNESS - The Platinum Collection (2008)

The Darkness was a multi-BRIT Award-winning British hard rock/glam rock band. Their highly retro style of music was influenced by rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Queen, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, Sparks, Van Halen, T. Rex, .38 Special, Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy. They were best known for the soaring falsetto of their lead singer Justin Hawkins, whose departure in 2006 resulted in the dissolution of the band. Originally started in 1991 from Kirkley High School, Lowestoft in Suffolk, brothers Justin Hawkins (vocals and guitar) and Dan Hawkins (guitar and vocals) found themselves in London where they met up with childhood friends, Frankie Poullain (bass guitar and vocals) and Ed Graham (drums and percussion), and thus The Darkness was formed. Dan initially saw his brother's potential of being a frontman after Justin did an impressive recreation of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" at a New Year's Eve party in 1999, thrown by Justin and Dan's aunt in her pub The Swan at Gillingham just over the River Waveney in Norfolk, despite the fact that Justin was only miming to the original song. Playing at first only in pubs and bars, their pyrotechnic guitar solos and over the top performances soon brought them to public knowledge. - wiki 1, 2.

DIANA ROSS - Lady Sings The Blues - Soundtrack (1972)

Still, both the film and the resulting soundtrack album were huge hits, and it's safe to say that they introduced Holliday's work to a new audience, clearly a good thing. LADY SINGS THE BLUES features Ross performing songs either associated with Holliday ("Good Morning Heartache"), or written by her ("Fine and Mellow"). There are also snippets of dialogue, and excerpts from Michel Legrand's evocative orchestral score. Diana Ross delivered a devastating portrayal of Billie Holliday in her film debut, although jazz purists were mixed on her singing. Some felt she captured the essence of Lady Day, if not the exact sound, while others were less charitable. *

Personnel includes: Diana Ross (vocals); John Collins (guitar, banjo); Plas Johnson, Marshall Royal, Ernie Watts (saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison, Albert Aamons (trumpet); George Bohanon (trombone); Gerald Wiggins (piano); Red Callender (bass); Earl Palmer (drums).

HEART - These Dreams:
Heart's Greatest Hits (1997)

Heart is a rock band whose founding members came from Seattle, Washington in the early 1970s. Going through several lineup changes, the only constant members of the group are sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. The group rose to fame in the 1970s with their music being influenced by hard rock as well as folk music. After diminishing in popularity by the mid-1980s, the band created a major comeback in 1985 experiencing further success with their power ballads throughout the rest of the decade. By the mid-1990s, Heart left their 1980s' sound and went back to their hard rock roots which they continue to play today. They have sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

"These Dreams: Heart's Greatest Hits" is Heart's fifteenth album, as well as being their second greatest hits compilation. This compilation features all of Heart's greatest hits that were released through Capitol Records. Oddly, the tracks: "Crazy On You", "Magic Man", "Dreamboat Annie", & "Heartless" are featured on this album, despite the fact that all four tracks were originally released through Mushroom Records. The reason why they show up here, on a greatest hits album that only features Capitol Records released hits, is that by this time, the rights to Heart's albums Dreamboat Annie & Magazine had been sold to that of Capitol Records. 1, 2.

NAZZ - Nazz (1968)

Nazz was an early psychedelic garage rock band from the 1960s. Though sometimes mistakenly called "The Nazz", the group's official name on all records and press materials is simply "Nazz", without the definite article. The band was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1967 by Todd Rundgren (lead guitar) and Carson Van Osten (bass guitar). Thom Mooney (drums, formerly of the Munchkins) and Robert "Stewkey" Antoni (vocals, keyboard) joined before their first concert, opening for the Doors in 1967. Nazz took their name from the song "The Nazz are Blue" by The Yardbirds from their album Roger the Engineer. That song, in turn, took its title from Lord Buckley's comic monologue, "The Nazz," which is a re-telling of the tale of Jesus of Nazareth. It is also often erroneously said that the band took its name from a line in the David Bowie song "Ziggy Stardust" which goes: "He was the nazz, with god-given ass..." but that song appeared in 1972, long after the first Nazz album, which appeared in 1968. *

CEDRIC BURNSIDE & LIGHTNIN' MALCOLM - 2 Man Wrecking Crew (2008)

Cedric Burnside, the drummer whose grandfather was the northern Mississippi blues legend R.L. Burnside, and Lightnin' Malcolm, a guitarist equally informed by hill country and Texas blues, indeed make a formidable duo. Their stripped down sound the pair trade vocals and are accompanied only by an occasional harmonica and the vocal duo of Beka Bramlett and Etta Britt is true to the immediacy of the Clarksdale-area style, while displaying a virtuosity that's often missing from the average juke joint ensemble. You'd expect some primitive stomping from a guitar-and-drums duo, and the Wrecking Crew deliver, but they can bring across a bit of hoodoo like the slide-driven "She's Got Somethin' On Me" equally well. Their songs are page-from-a-diary direct, mostly detailing stormy relationships, and both men have impressive pipes. As in any duo, the third member of the band is the silence around the two, and the 2 Man Wrecking Crew keep the atmosphere of the Nashville studio charged with gritty blues. If anything, the comparatively high-tech recording casts the pair in a garish light: Malcolm's growling guitar sounds impressive enough, but Burnside's drums trade mid-range power for trebly clarity. Not a Saturday night at a hill country juke, but it's as close as many will get. - Barnes & Noble.com *

This is emotional, thinking-person’s music that overlays a contemporary singer/songwriter sensibility on to the Americana legacy of blues, soul and raucous rock’n roll.

Anyone who took a shine to the recent Moreland & Arbuckle album, “1861?, should check this out as the perfect companion piece - more kick-ass dirty blues, full of grungy guitar, booming bass drum and gritty vocals, from the trio GravelRoad - Stefan Zillioux (guitar and vocals), Jon Kirby Newman (bass and guitar) and Martin Reinsel (drums and percussion). Not for the faint-hearted, the band deliver tales of sex, murder, death, love and more - often coming over as a collision between ZZ Top and John Lee Hooker, with the Mississippi hill country greats such as RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough thrown in - certainly no bad place to be! The band, originally coming out of Seattle, have had a busy 2008 - touring extensively in the United States and playing festivals, including a stint backing Fat Possum legend, T-Model Ford. This, their first release for the Wichita, Kansas label, Uncle Larry’s Records, comes four years after their self-released debut, “GravelRoad”. The album is brim full of the aforementioned sound, as well as fuzzy, distorted slide guitar and kicking drums; the (nearly) title cut, “I Shot The Devil”, recalls classic ZZ Top, with guitar riff and vocals coming on like the band in their 70s’ blues days; “Call My Name” features that hypnotic guitar groove from the Mississippi giants like Burnside and Kimbrough.

MEM SHANNON - Live -
A Night At Tipitina's (2007)

When taxi driver-turned-bluesman Mem Shannon released "A Cab Driver's Blues" in 1995, he earned a reputation as a songwriter who told stories by carefully observing the lives of others. On "Live: A Night at Tipitina's," the New Orleans-based singer-songwriter turns the spotlight on himself with a powerful new song called, "All I Have," a first-person account of dealing with the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. According to record company information, Shannon left town before the hurricane for a pragmatic reason: he can't swim. His return to the decimated city apparently inspired "All I Have," which has him sifting through the rubble of his old home and telling an unnamed female companion about the significance of each item. The matter-of-fact realism of the piece is underscored by his band, The Membership, which back him with a melancholy, minor key groove. There are other highlights on this CD, which was recorded live during Mardi Gras 2007 at the legendary Crescent City club. On "Payin' My Dues," Shannon gets to show off his spindly guitar style; "Forget About Me" shows his jazzy side. And the 13-minute reworking of the title track of Shannon's "I'm From Phunkville" CD really brings the funk. The problem with having a song as intense as "All I Have" on a CD is that it can't help but overshadow the other songs. Listeners won't be able to easily shake off their first listen of "All I Have," but with repeated listenings, all of "Live: A Night at Tipitina's" will start to shine. 1, 2.

"Smokin'" is a good electric blues album, but it's hard to divorce an assessment of it from the knowledge that singer/guitarist Jonny Lang was a mere 14 years old when he recorded it. Would one consider it such an achievement if the bandleader were twice that age? Probably not. Without Lang's precocity as a draw, the album is a competent work in a hidebound form. The guitar playing is fluid and professional in a style reminiscent of many other players, notably B.B. King. The singing is fine, but unremarkable. The backup band maintains a groove and gives Lang something to play off of. If you saw a band playing like this in a local club, you'd have a good time. And if you could tell that the guitar player was underage, you'd be far more impressed. But then, that's the point, isn't it? - All Music Guide

"Live at the El Mocambo" is the second live album by the Canadian rock band April Wine, released in 1977. It was recorded during a performance at Toronto's El Mocambo club[1] when April Wine opened for the Rolling Stones during one of the surprise club appearances for which the Stones are renowned, and during which they recorded part of their own live album Love You Live (1977). Live at the El Mocambo was produced and engineered by Eddie Kramer, best known for his work with the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin.[2][3] Partly owing to Kramer's input, the album features a somewhat more raw-sounding April Wine than most fans are used to from the band's more conventionally-produced studio albums. Among April Wine's many albums, Live at the El Mocambo has tended to be overshadowed by the more commercially-successful Harder, Faster (1979) and The Nature of the Beast (1981). *

RYAN ADAMS - Heartbreaker (2000)

Whiskeytown were one the mid-'90s wave of bands who approached American roots music, country, folk, singer/songwriter, and combinations thereof from an alternative rock standpoint. They were apt to be as influenced by Nick Drake and Superchunk as by Johnny Cash and Neil Young. Ryan Adams performs vocal duties for Whiskeytown, and HEARTBREAKER is his first solo album. It's primarily a singer/songwriter affair, with lots of acoustic guitars, gentle drums, subtle keyboards, and back-porch harmony vocals, but there's also a lot of variety and kick. "To Be Young" tears out of the gate like a rollicking out-take from Dylan's HIGHWAY 61 sessions, and the gentle, shimmering, baroque-tinged "Amy" recalls both the Left Banke, and the Beatles in their "Eleanor Rigby" mode. Many tunes like "To Be the One" have a bare-bones, dusty, story-telling quality that recalls Dylan, John Prine, Woody Guthrie, and Steve Earle (who Adams slightly resembles vocally) without ever sounding like Adams is aping them. As a bonus, Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch supply heavenly harmonies.

DELANEY & BONNIE AND FRIENDS - D & B Together (Remastered & Expanded) (1972)

"D & B Together" is a 1972 album by Delaney & Bonnie and Friends. It was their last album of new material, as Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett would divorce soon after its release. Although released by Columbia/CBS "D & B Together" was actually recorded for the Atco/Atlantic label, under the working title Country Life. According to his autobiography Rhythm and the Blues, Atlantic executive Jerry Wexler was dissatisfied with the album's quality, and, upon investigating the situation and discovering Delaney and Bonnie were splitting up, sold their contract - including this album's master tapes - to CBS. CBS reordered the running sequence of the album as shown below. Guest musicians on the album include Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Duane Allman, Dave Mason, John Hartford, Billy Preston, Tina Turner, and Steve Cropper.

GARY BROOKER - Within Our House (1997) thumbupthumbupthumbup

When Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wanted to organize a concert to help raise money for the beautiful 13th Century church of St. Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England, he not only chose some of his finest musician friends to help out with the cause, but he also went on to record the event and release it on a fan club cd in a very limited run of 1000 units. This rare release Within Our House went on to become a highly collectable recording when the obvious happened as it sold out in a matter of days. However, with Gary Brooker's blessings, Friday Music is now releasing this fine live recording for the first time in North America, to go along with the extensive Procol Harum Remasters series. Procol Harum classics like "A Salty Dog" and "Holding On" get the five star treatment from this eclectic group of musicians. Brooker's vocals and piano work are stellar throughout the recording and his emotional readings of the gospel and religious material is second to none, as his interpretation of the classic Elvis Presley hit "Peace in the Valley" really conveys the true meaning of this charitable event. Other Procol Harum favorites like "The Long Goodbye" and the classic "Nothing but the Truth" are truly inspiring in the church environment, as the album closes with a heart rendering version of their number one classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale." The applause you will hear from this lucky audience will attest that this was a successful night for everyone involved with this wonderful event. Procol Harum fans rejoice! - amazon.com 1, 2.

RISING SONS - Rising Sons Featuring Taj Mahal & Ry Cooder (1992)

Rising Sons was a Los Angeles, California-based band found in 1964. The original lineup was Ry Cooder (vocals, six and 12-string guitar, mandolin, slide and bottleneck guitar, dobro), Taj Mahal (vocals, harmonica, guitar, piano), Gary Marker (bass), Jesse Lee Kincaid (vocals and guitar) and Ed Cassidy (drums). Cassidy left the band after he broke his hand and was replaced by Kevin Kelley. The group was signed to Columbia Records but their album was never issued. One single, "Candy Man"/"The Devil's Got My Woman", did surface, but the group disbanded in 1966. Mahal became a prominent blues/folk performer and Cooder made his name playing sessions and later recorded successfully under his own name. Cassidy founded the band Spirit and Kelley became a member of his cousin Chris Hillman's band the Byrds in 1968, and played on their seminal Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. Rising Sons' languid, bluesy/folksy sound anticipated future recordings by outfits like Moby Grape, Buffalo Springfield, the Grateful Dead, and the Byrds. The session became widely bootlegged and nearly three decades later were finally given an official release by Columbia Records.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Beg, Scream & Shout: The Big Ol' Box Of '60s Soul (1997)

Six CDs, and 144 songs, of classic '60s soul, including selections by every major performer in the idiom (except for Sam Cooke and Sly Stone, who were unavailable for licensing reasons), as well as numerous influential minor performers, one-shot artists, and just plain unknowns. The music is classic, and the packaging is an event in itself, with the discs enclosed in a mock briefcase for carrying 45 singles, and trading cards for each song on the volume that have photos and trivia questions on front, and mini-essays on the back. Yet it ultimately occupies a rather perplexing space on the collector's shelf. Anyone who's enough of a soul lover to fork over the dough for this production will no doubt have a good many of the tunes already, particularly the Hall of Fame hits like "Sweet Soul Music," "(I Know) I'm Losing You," "Don't Make Me Over," and "La-La-Means I Love You." There are numerous great rarities here -- Jay Wiggins' magnificent melancholy ballad "Sad Girl," and the rare original versions of "Shake a Tail Feather" (the Five Du-Tones), "Tainted Love" (Gloria Jones), "Mustang Sally" (Sir Mack Rice), and "Piece of My Heart" (Erma Franklin). Yet the tracks used to represent some superstars -- "You've Been in Love Too Long" for Martha the Vandellas, or "Fly Me to the Moon" for Bobby Womack -- seem almost deliberately idiosyncratic, even though this method also yields underrated off-the-beaten-tracks by Ray Charles ("In the Heat of the Night"), Al Green ("Back Up Train"), and others. It's almost as if some guys stayed up several nights running trying to make the ultimate '60s soul party tape -- one which demonstrated both their impeccable taste and the depth of their record collection -- and got so carried away with the idea that a box set resulted. Like all well-made party tapes, the content is excellent, but the sum is neither a definitive '60s soul box (an impossible task in any case), nor one which offers quite enough lost classics to justify its hefty price tag for those who already have half or more of the tunes. - All Music Guide

JONNY LANG
- Lie To Me (1996)

Nipping at the heels of wiz-kid blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who debuted at age 18, comes 16-year-old Jonny Lang, the most soulful guitar slinger ever to make it out of junior high school. Lang's debut, much like Shepherd's LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, features a mix of choice covers and co-written originals. But whereas HEIGHTS leans in a Delta-blues direction, Lang's blues has more of an R&B flavor. The Clavinet and Hammond B-3 organ on the title track and "Hit The Ground Running" help give LIE TO ME a funky swagger. As for influences, Lang's choices of Ike Turner's "Matchbox" and Syl Johnson's "Back For A Taste Of Your Love" show a taste for rousing shuffles and Memphis soul. Lang shows his commercial instincts by wrapping up the album with "When I Come To You" and the acoustic "Missing Your Love," two songs that wouldn't sound out of place on a recent Eric Clapton album. 1, 2.

TRACKS:
01. Lie to Me 02. Darker Side 03. Good Morning Little School Girl 04. Still Wonder 05. Matchbox 06. Back For A Taste of Your Love 07. A Quitter Never Wins 08. Hit the Ground Running 09. Rack 'em Up 10. When I Come to You 11. There's Gotta Be a Change 12. Missing Your Love

08. Ooh La La
09. Night At The Wheel
10. True Love (Don't Leave Me Blue)
11. Lovin' When They Can
12. Waiting For You

Certainly one of the most exciting musicians to come out of Acadiana is Wayne Toups. From the moment he bursts on-stage with his accordion, Toups is going full blast and the show is only going up from there. In short, Toups will blow your dance socks off. His electrifying stage presence is due somewhat to his persona; often sporting a Hawaiian shirt, head band, and ponytail, he is a man in constant motion. It is also because he is a fantastic musician on his accordion, performing a brand of music he calls Zydecajun. As the name sests, his style fuses the traditional Cajun country sound with the bluesier sound of zydeco, with a definite rock & roll twist and Cajun roots rock is what it is.

BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO

10. Buck's Going Downtown headbang
11. Buck's Going Uptown headbang
12. Buck's Going To Trenchtown headbang

Buckwheat Zydeco's first studio album since 1997's Trouble doesn't break away from the proven upbeat party groove that the band has perfected since the late '70s, but in a way it does break some new ground with the album's "encore," three tracks during which Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural, Jr. sets aside his accordion and returns to his first professional instrument, the Hammond B-3 organ. Dural got his start on the zydeco circuit playing the B-3 in Clifton Chenier's Red Hot Louisiana Band in the mid-'70s, and he's no slouch at the instrument, showing some smooth soul-jazz moves and even paying homage to the great Jimmy Smith on the extended "Buck's Going Uptown" encore track. He also tackles some light reggae on the album's closer, "Buck's Going to Trenchtown," so while Jackpot! is pretty much what you'd expect from Buckwheat Zydeco at this point upbeat zydeco dance numbers it also has some new and interesting wrinkles. The rocking opener, "I'm Gonna Love You Anyway," sets the party vibe, while the ragged, angular title tune shows how easily Dural walks the line between soulful R&B and zydeco, but it is the jazzy B-3 "encore" tracks that steal the show here. ~ All Music Guide

DAVID BYRNE &thumbup BRIAN ENO - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (2008)

David Byrne and Brian Eno retreated to pop's periphery years ago, but their influence is suddenly front and center. There are echoes of Byrne's old band, Talking Heads, in the avant-funk of LCD Soundsystem and other dance-rock bands, and you can hear the singer's workaday hysteria in the cadences of Arcade Fire's Win Butler and Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock. Coldplay sought producer Eno to help them make Viva la Vida, a record that recalls another album with Eno's mark, U2's The Joshua Tree. You can also hear Byrne and Eno's world-music fusions reflected in polyglot indie bands like Vampire Weekend.

With their new album, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, the pair rejoin the rock conversation as if they'd never left. The last record Byrne and Eno made together was the groundbreaking 1981 dance-rock tape collage project, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, but the duo go back further — Everything recalls the three Talking Heads records that Eno produced, played on and/or wrote: 1978's More Songs About Buildings and Food, 1979's Fear of Music and 1980's Remain in Light. For those records, Eno was essentially a band member, bringing a darker, more layered and atmospheric sound to the group. *

THE CYRKLE

The Cyrkle was a 1960's American rock and roll band. The band was formed by guitarists and lead singers Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes (bass guitar), who met while studying at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. The other members were Earl Pickens on keyboards and Marty Fried on drums. They were originally a "frat rock" band called The Rhondells, but were later discovered and managed by Brian Epstein, who was better known as manager of The Beatles. Epstein's partner was New York attorney Nathan Weiss, who heard the band in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Labor Day in 1965. He became their manager and renamed them. John Lennon provided the unique spelling of their new name. They were produced by John Simon. In the summer of 1966, they opened on fourteen dates for the Beatles during their U.S. tour. On August 28, they headed the opening acts performing prior to The Beatles at Dodger Stadium. The other artists who appeared were Bobby Hebb, The Ronettes, and The Remains. Before touring with The Beatles, The Cyrkle had a successful engagement at the Downtown Discotheque in New York City.

The Cyrkle is best known for their 1966 song "Red Rubber Ball," which went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was co-written by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel and Bruce Woodley of The Seekers. The band had one more Top 20 hit, "Turn-Down Day" later in 1966. After the release of the debut album, Red Rubber Ball, they recorded a second album, Neon, in late 1966, and a movie soundtrack, The Minx, in 1967. They followed that with various singles and then disbanded in late 1967. *

EAGLES - The Very Best Of The Eagles (2003)

This double-disc collection paints a more focused portrait of one of the biggest-selling American rock acts of all time than the Eagles' exhaustive box set, Selected Works: 1972-1999, but one with finer detail than the band's two mega-platinum selling greatest hits packages. Very Best includes all 20 songs found on those two albums from the easygoing rock of "Take It Easy" through the live "Seven Bridges Road," recorded in 1980 and spotlighting the group's rich, four-part harmonies and much more. Deeper album tracks, such as the soaring Tom Waits cover "Ol' 55," the Don Henley-sung, Philly soul-influenced "Wasted Time," and the Joe Walsh rocker "In the City," offer a richer appreciation of a band always game to stretch their stylistic reach. The set is fleshed out by the Eagles' more-soul-than-blues version of Charles Brown's holiday ballad "Please Come Home for Christmas," originally released in '78, and two studio cuts from the 1994 reunion album, Hell Freezes Over and brings fans up to date with Henley and Glenn Frey's 9/11 think piece "Hole in the World," a fittingly subdued ballad with intertwining vocals. 1, 2, 3, 4.

Recorded with returning producer, Ethan Johns in Box, England, and touching upon a range of styles and musical settings- spanning pastoral folk, railroad blues, front porch country, and plangent balladry - Gossip In The Grain proves to be his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date. Whereas LaMontagne's two previous albums, 'Trouble' and 'Till The Sun Turns Black', were largely solo affairs, with Johns serving as multi-tasking instrumentalist, Gossip In The Grain sees him joined by members of his touring band, bassist Jennifer Condos and guitarist Eric Heywood (with Johns largely handling drum duties). Well the lady is back, almost 20 years since her last studio album, but is this worth the wait? Listening to the tracks that have been released teasingly I would say yes. The title track has been around for a few years but it has been given a Tricky revamp making it sound epic and relevant. The first single release, Corporate Cannibal, is a slab of moody beats with Grace speaking through the song making you shiver with anticipation. She has been receiving rave reviews recently for her live performances and she is doing a short tour next year - if you get the chance to see her live then you will see what a strong performer she is. Forget the diva attitude and stories, just listen to the music and enjoy the return of one of the most enigmatic entertainers there is.

VLATKO STEFANOVSKI TRIO feat. JAN AKKERMAN and DAMIR IMERI - Thunder From the Blue Sky (2008)

Macedonian guitarist/composer Vlatko Stefanovski began playing guitar when he was 11. As a teenager studying English language and literature, he formed Macedonia's biggest rock group, Leb I Sol. The band fused rock, jazz, and traditional Macedonian music, elements that inspired all of Stefanovski's music. He played with the band throughout the '70s and '80s, while also pursuing a solo career. Starting in the late '70s, Stefanovski began scoring animated features like 1979's Cirkus, films like 1985's Smeker, and ballets such as 1989's Zodiac. After Leb I Sol faded away in the late '80s, Stefanovski focused his efforts on his solo career and on collaborating with other artists and musicians. His solo debut, Cowboys & Indians, was released in 1994 and showcased his diverse, emotional guitar style. 1996's Sarajevo benefited UNICEF's fund for children in need, and 1999's primarily acoustic Krushevo was recorded with Miroslav Tadic, a Macedonian-American guitarist. Stefanovski also plays with the Balkan Impressions, a Balkan-jazz fusion, and continues to score film, theater, and ballet productions, including the score for Gipsy Magic, a 1997 film by Stole Popov that won a Grand Prix at the Montpellier Film Festival in France.

His latest blues album titled "Thunder from the Blue Sky" has been inspired by blues and jazz roots. The CD includes 15 songs, 13 whereof are remixes, whereas two are compositions written by Vlatko himself, among which is the title theme. Dutch Ian Ackerman, one of most influential rock-guitar player in the history of music, appears as album guest. 1, 2.

DIDO - Safe Trip Home (2008)

06. Look No Further

It's five years since Life for Rent, Dido's nine-million selling follow-up to 2001's 12-million selling debut No Angel, so you might wonder what's been taking so long. The answer, judging by her third studio album Safe Trip Home, is that Dido has been taking some time to mature, both musically and emotionally. Where Life For Rent was a series of snapshots from the life of a newly single girl (one reviewer called it the musical equivalent of Bridget Jones's Diary), Safe Trip Home is overwhelmingly coloured by the death at the end of 2006 of her father. Not that it's a gloomy album, but these songs are noticeably more reflective, their themes of longing and absence rooted deeper than the caprices of romantic love, and consequently it feels more serious than her previous work. The outstanding song of the album is the piercingly beautiful, Celtic-flavoured 'Grafton Street', a six-minute hymn to loss co-written with Brian Eno and featuring Mick Fleetwood on drums. Listen to it once and it will catch at your heart as a wrenching lament for a lover who will not return. Listen to it again knowing it's an account of visiting her father during his last illness and death ('My love, I know you're leaving, but I will stay here with you') and I guarantee you will be bawling your eyes out uncontrollably long after the album has finished. There's an honesty and depth to this song that you can't fake, even if you tend to the opinion that Dido's distinctive cracked falsetto generally has a limited emotional range. - guardian.co.uk

LUCINDA WILLIAMS - Essence (2001)

Few artists in recent memory have been able to wring more from less than Lucinda Williams. The hauntingly beautiful, wistful, and often breathtaking Essence is another case in point of how far raw emotion and honesty can carry an artist. Williams's singing is at its paralyzing best throughout 11 bare originals, an incredibly affecting vocal performance by a woman who was not blessed with exceptional tone, range, or pitch. Throughout, her voice is incredibly naked, vulnerable, and wrought with feeling. "Blue" and "Broken Butterflies" are gorgeous anti-lullabies whose simple melodies belie their poignant ruminations. The title track is a sultry and susceptible sex-as-drug come-on while "Reason to Cry" has all the hallmarks of a classic country lament. The only departure from the subdued mood is "Get Right with God," a rousing gospel tune that practically begs for salvation through punishment and is the rare acknowledgement of a world beyond Williams's own fears and desires. More meditative than the personal narratives found on Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Essence is ultimately more powerful. Williams wallows in sorrow and weakness, and the result is moving and disarming. *

"Get Right With God" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

MARIA MULDAUR - Richland Woman Blues (2001)

Known best for her offbeat 1974 pop hit "Midnight at the Oasis," Maria Muldaur finally puts that camel to bed with a crisply produced, impudent album of stripped-down acoustic blues songs from the 1920s and 1930s. Her twenty-fifth recording in four decades of an eclectic music career is authoritative yet uncomplicated - sometimes sassy (Bessie Smith's "My Man Blues," with Dave Matthews skating the ivories like they were deep-blue ice) and often stirring (Mississippi Fred McDowell's "It's a Blessing," featuring Bonnie Raitt and her torrid slide guitar). She revisits the ribald "Me and My Chauffeur Blues," a song she performed in the Sixties with Jim Kweskin's Jug Band and a favorite of Memphis Minnie, whose swaggering style inspired this authentic, impressive project - one of Muldaur's best. Her journey, which began under the Rev. Gary Davis' tutelage and peaked in the arid pop desert, has landed back in the fertile blues delta - where she's a natural.

THE BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND - Live (1970)

Though largely forgotten by the public at large today, this was a very influential and highly accomplished band back in the mid-'60s. For one thing, they were one of the first racially integrated bands, and they were a blues band who played with a force and amplification that greatly appealed to rock audiences, making them one of the first American blues bands to “cross over.” Anyone who’s ever said that “white guys can’t play the blues” obviously never heard Paul Butterfield, the autocratic leader of the band whose passionate but unremarkable vocal talents paled in comparison to his virtuoso harmonica skills. The other “star” in the band was lead guitarist Michael Bloomfield, who rivaled Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck as the guitarist of the mid-'60s.

In 1967, inspired by his idol Junior Parker, Butterfield formed a "big band" that featured a Gene Dinwiddie-arranged horn section and by the late '60s included Ralph Walsh (guitar), Rod Hicks (bass), Ted Harris (piano), and George Davidson (drums). Seasoned in blues, jazz, and R&B, the group assembled at L.A.'s Troubadour club in March of 1970 to play the gigs recorded for this release. 1, 2.

MIKE BLOOMFIELD
- Prescription For The Blues (2005)

The celebrated blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield performs a variety of blues, R&B, and ragtime classics, including "Cherry Red," "Don't You Lie to Me," and "Walking the Floor Over You," on this accomplished and wide-ranging set. He's accompanied by the pianist Mark Naftalin and a skilful rhythm section, and though singing was never his strong point, his consummate guitar playing carries him through. Barrelhouse Chuck's blues piano playing is filled with soul, high energy, and low down greasy blues. His loyalty to carry on the works of legendary players, like his mentors Little Brother Montgomery and Sunnyland Slim, contribute to his style. This disc also includes three duets with Erwin Helfer, another Chicago blues piano master. Erwin and Chuckąs duets are spontaneous and thrilling like a live performance. Barrelhouse Chuck is keeping the blues piano tradition alive and has earned his own place among the masters. *
