DEBORAH COLEMAN - Livin’ On Love (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Deborah Coleman detected a void in the music stratum and successfully filled it: A lead guitarist/vocalist playing the in the male dominated world of blues-rock. Others like Bonnie Raitt and Marie Muldaur have contributed to varying degrees in the contemporary blues scene (and other styles) but Coleman with her string of five consistently strong albums in only seven years demonstrates that she is serious about her craft and knows her calling as a blueswoman. Livin' on Love combines slow-grind blues pieces, R&B and gutsy rockers with a soulful voice and exemplary guitar playing proving that she's here to stay, not merely passing through.

SCOTT HENDERSON - Well To The Bone (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 256

Scott Henderson's Well To The Bone is a guitar masterpiece where the guitar does the talking. True, five tracks feature the guest vocals of Wade Durham and Thelma Houston, but with six tracks running over six minutes, one track over seven minutes and one track over eight minutes, the insturmental portions of even the five vocal tracks dominate the release. The five instrumentals include "Hillbilly In The Band" (complete with dog barks), "Ashes", "Sultan's Boogie", "That Hurts", and the eight-plus minute closer "Rituals". Running the gamut from slinky Texas blues to harmonically adventurous forays into uncharted musical terrain, Henderson delivers his most impressive blues-oriented recording to date.

ELTON JOHN - Tumbleweed Connection (1970)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"Tumbleweed Connection" is part of the early catalog of Elton John's work that Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose reportedly once said he would love to own the publishing rights to as a work of art. Indeed, it does contain some of John's most expressive work as an artist, but with the showy stage presence and pop melodicism still under construction. Tumbleweed is characterized by John's balladeer approach, with John at his storyteller best on songs like "Burn Down the Mission." Even if the lyrics were generally written by Bernie Taupin, John's voice and inflection made every song seem deeply personal. The beautiful "Come Down in Time" displays the subtleties and sophistication of his talent, with the piano not yet serving as the instrumental focal point it would later become. The album also features the favorite "Ballad of a Well-Known Gun" and "Where to Now St. Peter?"

VAN HALEN - The Best of Both Worlds (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS is a two-disc overview of more than 25 years of Van Halen recordings. The set contains a few of the now-standard new songs included in such offerings. Placed on the first disc, this trio of tunes finds VH's second singer, Sammy Hagar, back on board (he'd left in '96 when the band planned to record with Roth again). In fact, the compilation's title (taken from the Hagar-era song) is a reference to the band's two major eras, as demarcated by their distinctly different frontmen. The result is a collection that features raucous, hyperactive songs with Roth ("Hot for Teacher," "Jump," "Unchained") and soaring ballads and mid-tempo anthems with Hagar ("Dreams," "Right Now," "Finish What Ya Started").

CHICORY TIP - The Best of (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

First known as The Sonics. Reformed around 1969 as Chicory Tip. Signed with CBS Records. Band members: Peter Hewson (vocals), Rick Foster (guitar/moog), Barry Mayger (bass), Brian Shearer (drums), Rod Cloutt (guitar). The first few singles didn't do very well but their 1971 release "Excuse Me Baby" got them their first appearance on UK, BBC Top Of The Pops. In February 1972, studio manager, Roger Easterby secured their first hit song, "Son Of My Father", written by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. One of the first recordings to feature the moog synthesizer. The song made number one on the UK charts for 3 weeks and stayed in the charts for another 13 weeks. Two other hit singles followed, "What's Your Name" and "Good Grief Christina". Their fourth release "Cigarettes, Women and Wine" was a hit in Europe but failed to make the UK charts because of a BBC Radio 1 ban on the reference to smoking. They disbanded in 1975, but later reformed to play on the 1970's nostalgia revival circuit. They still perform in Kent, UK.

This mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time - nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").

The Best of Van Morrison Volume Two is a compilation album by Van Morrison, released in 1993. He chose the tracks for this album himself. It is mostly drawn from his work during the period 1984-1991. "Real Real Gone" from the 1990 album Enlightenment was the only song included that was a fairly successful single. The other songs were not well-known except for among longtime fans. They were a good example of his more idiosyncratic material that had been prevelent during this period when his work was mostly about spiritual searches for fulfillment. But also included were a 1960s Them cover of John Lee Hooker's "Don't Look Back" and "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" a Bob Dylan cover.

The songs on the album were pulled from twenty-five years of material. One of the songs, "Wonderful Remark" had previously only been available on the soundtrack of the film, The King of Comedy.

ALBERT COLLINS - Frostbite (1980)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

"Frostbite" gives Collins fans more of what they've come to expect--raw, rootsy blues and unparalleled guitar playing. Collins's approach to the blues guitar is distinctive, and he alternates between high, singing leads and echoey, low-end motifs, manipulating space and drawing his phrases out with unusual rhythmic variation. His tone, too, is unique; it is heavy, dark, and somewhat cool (which gave rise to his "Iceman" moniker). All of these characteristics are on full display throughout "Frostbite".

BLACK SABBATH - Reunion (1998)

Rivaled only by Kiss' reunion of founding members, Black Sabbath's reformation was a long awaited and eagerly anticipated occurrence that had fans gnashing their teeth anytime rumors of reconciliation were proven false (such as the aftermath of the band's 1985 Live Aid appearance). The 2-CD REUNION puts all the hearsay to rest in the shape of a December 1997 show recorded in the band's hometown of Birmingham, England. V.A. - A Tribute To Tradition (1998)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"The best tribute albums take well-known material and reinvent it as new--albeit with care and respect for the original intent. On that level, Tribute to Tradition doesn't work, but that's not to say it's a bad album. Rather, it's (for the most part) a safe collection of some great country songs, recorded by some of the most talented young stars in Nashville today. Individually, these songs stand strong as ever, and the performances do reflect an obvious reverence. Still, a few more chances could have been taken with arrangements or vocal pairings. That said, highlights include Randy Travis's "Mama Tried" and Alison Krauss's "The Three Bells." Two new tracks are also included, nominally "to show that traditional country music is still alive and well," but that seems more like a hedge." - Amazon

LUTHER ALLISON - Luther's Blues (1974)

Blues Classics Remastered And Revisited marks the first individual CD release of 1974's Luther's Blues . The axeman's ascension to guitar royalty commenced with this modern masterpiece of electric blues, which followed his 1972 Motown major label debut Bad News Is Coming. The original tracks on Luther's Blues range from the title tune featured in the 1975 film Cooley High to the driving "Someday Pretty Baby" and tortured "Part Time Love," from his reprise of Magic Sam's "Easy Baby" to Roosevelt Sykes' "Driving Wheel" and Luther's staggering seven-minute epic of downbeat blues, "Let's Have A Little Talk." Now two previously unreleased 1973 studio bonus tracks have been added: "San-Ho-Zay," an incendiary takeoff on Freddy King's 1961 instrumental hit, and an early version of Luther's "Bloomington Closing." Also featured is the previously unreleased stage finale from his famed appearance at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival on September 9, 1973, the medley "I'm Gonna Miss My Baby/Bad News Is Coming/The Thrill Is Gone."

There have been Presley blues compilations, so it's only fitting that this co-founder of rock & roll should finally get his own. Ironically, Blues kicks off with a total rocker, "House of Blue Lights," which the Flamin' Groovies used as the blueprint for their classic cover, just as the Rolling Stones used this version of "Down the Road Apiece" as the mold for their own. "Route 66," however, is pure Nat King Cole, another Berry hero. Also imcluded are covers of Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love To You," Charles Brown's "Driftin' Blues," and several relatively obscure Berry originals, including "Wee Wee Hours," the B-side to his first single. Climaxed by a tribute to his beloved hometown via W.C. Handy's classic "St. Louis Blues," Blues stands out as one of the most unique Berry compilations, offering a glimpse of the artist's musical roots." - Amazon

NINA SIMONE - A Single Woman (1993)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

A SINGLE WOMAN is an appropriately titled, almost autobiographical testament to her life, a meditation on the joys and pains of a woman alone. Her rich, deep voice soars dramatically over lush orchestral arrangements. The album's high point is a superb reprise of her haunting tango arrangement of "Just Say I Love Him" with guitarist Al Shackman (whom she worked with during her early years) making a guest appearance. Also included are three Rod McKuen songs and a moving version of the standard "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" that is dedicated to the late Prime Minister of Barbados.

02. Lonesome Cities
03. If I Should Lose You
04. The Folks Who Live On The Hill

RORY BLOCK - Mama's Blues (1991)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Rory Block is a white country blues stylist whose singing and guitar playing teem with honest empathy for past masters such as Bessie Smith, Tommy Johnson, and Robert Johnson. As an interpretive singer, however, she conveys little sense of the pained emotionality of her mentors-her inflections are noticeably secondhand-and only when she handles unexceptional originals does her character begin to emerge. This 1991 album mixes well-chosen covers with lively original i compositions. Rory's soulful vocals and evocative acoustic i guitar command attention throughout, both on their own (Robert i Johnson's "Terraplane Blues") and with accompaniment (Jerry i Marotta's drum punctuations and Jorma Kaukonen's melancholy i electric guitar moans on the title track). The disc ends on an i upbeat note with an original gospel song, "Sing Good News," i powered by piano, hand claps, and choir vocals.

ETTA JAMES & THE ROOTS BAND - Burnin' Down The House (2002)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Just when it seems that the purr has left Etta James's estimable voice, about halfway through this live concert recorded in 2001 at L.A.'s House of Blues she begins her eternally romantic ballad "At Last," and the years tumble away. James's singing becomes flexible as a tenor saxophone, building to a lovely, serpentine diminuendo, which she caps with an arching phrase that dissipates in a misty exhalation of breath. It's such a beautiful, brilliantly executed performance that it's suddenly clear that for most of this show, the 64-year-old diva played dirty on purpose.

ROBERT WYATT - Rock Bottom (1974)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Robert Wyatt is an English musician, and a former member of the influential Canterbury scene band Soft Machine. His 1974 masterpiece Rock Bottom is among the most layered, lovely, and luscious pop records ever as well as a testament to survival. As Wyatt explains in the notes, "The night before the new group was to have its first rehearsal, I fell from a fourth floor window and broke my spine." Produced by Nick Mason, the cream of England's vital prog-rock scene contributed their most subtle, least-wanky efforts for their dear friend's solo recording. Ivor Cutler, Fred Frith, Hugh Hopper, and Mike Oldfield shine alongside ethereal singer/ songwriter/ keyboardist/percussionist Wyatt. The most touching of these playful drone-pop songs appear to detail Wyatt's relationship with his wife/collaborator, Alfreda Benge. "Your lunacy fits neatly with my own," he sings.

Personnel include: Robert Wyatt (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Ivor Cutler (vocals, concertina); Mike Oldfield thumbup(guitar); Fred Frith (viola); Gary Windo (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair (bass guitar); Laurie Allan (drums).

COOTIE STARK - Sugar Man (1999)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

One of the last real Piedmont blues guitarists, Cootie Stark was born as James Miller on December 27, 1927, in Abbeville, SC. He spent his childhood around Anderson County, receiving his first guitar when he was 14 years old. While still a teenager, Stark moved to nearby Greenville, SC, where, unable to find work because of extremely poor eyesight (he eventually went legally blind), he began singing and playing guitar on the street corners in the late '30s, learning the busking trade (and a large repertoire of songs) from the likes of Baby Tate, Pink Anderson, and Peg Leg Sam, soon acquiring the nickname "Sugar Man." He wasn't discovered by the outside world until he was in his seventies, when Music Maker Foundation founder Tim Duffy happened to hear Stark perform some Fats Domino songs. Music Maker released his first album, Sugar Man, in 1999, and a second release, Raw Sugar, which featured accompaniment by Taj Mahal, followed in 2003.

The album consisted entirely of songs composed by legendary blues artist Robert Johnson, and featured a guest appearance by Paul Rodgers, ex-lead vocalist of Free and Bad Company, who has lately been working with Queen. TINA TURNER - Tina Live In Europe (1988)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

A slick, well programmed document of Turner's 87-88 World Tour. Disc one mostly consists of hits from her comeback period, with particularly strong versions of signature songs like "Private Dancer," "What's Love Got to Do With It," and the unarguable "Better Be Good to Me." Disc two, however, has songs from her days with husband Ike (the autobiographical rocker "Nutbush City Limits"), '60s r&b classics ("Land of a Thousand Dances," Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour") and some celebrity duets. David Bowie drops by to co-croon his hit "Let's Dance," Eric Clapton and Robert Cray dispense hot guitar licks on, respectively, "Tearing Us Apart" and Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," and Bryan Adams nearly rips his lungs out trying to keep up with Tina on "It's Only Love." A very satisfying package.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS - Stampede (1975)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

With a former Steely Dan guitar wiz now a full time member of the band, the Doobie Brothers decided to branch out from their trademark West Coast pop/rock. This is a far more ambitious album than its predecessors. The album's centerpiece (and at over six minutes, the longest track) is "I Cheat the Hangman," which begins as a folkish harmony piece a la David Crosby's "Guinevere," and then goes off on an extended instrumental break. Other high points include a satisfying cover of Kim Weston's Motown classic "Take Me in Your Arms," the bluesy country of "Texas Lullabye," and "Star Key Sequel Rag," a lovely acoustic guitar instrumental with something of a Renaissance feel.

JIMMY D.LANE WITH DOUBLE TROUBLE - It's Time (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

You might call Jimmy D. Lane a natural born bluesman. His father was the legendary Jimmy Rogers, who Jimmy D. shared the stage with for many years before recording on his own. Lane can play it fifitesstyle, as he did with his father and on Eomot RaSun's album, but he can also turn it up and rock out with any of the finest guitar slingers. For It's Time, Lane tackles a program of original tunes (except for one), with the aid of Double Trouble, Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section. These guys bring decades of experience to their blues rhythms, and know exactly how to support a player like Lane.

OMAR KENT DYKES & JIMMIE VAUGHAN - On The Jimmy Reed Highway (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR
Album of the week...hmmm...month!?

"Big boss man is still the man today," growls Omar Dykes on one of just two non-Jimmy Reed covers from a rare release without his Howlers band. That handily sums up this roaring and impassioned tribute to one of the most vital, influential, yet often unheralded figures in blues. What was intended as a solo Dykes project took on a unique tinge as fellow Texan Jimmie Vaughan--also a huge Reed fan--swung by to add some solos and stayed to contribute his concise and taut guitar lines to nearly every track. The duo also brought in veteran harpists Kim Wilson (the Fabulous Thunderbirds), James Cotton (Muddy Waters), and local icon Gary Primich, as well as long time Vaughan associate Lou Ann Barton to upshift the groove with her sexy vocals. The resulting disc finds that slippery Reed pocket of sly, lazy, yet edgy shuffles that are deceptively difficult to recreate. Although Dykes's powerfully gruff, Howlin' Wolf-styled voice is nowhere near Reed's far less incisive approach, the bass-free instrumentation and Vaughan's guitar lines perfectly capture the essence of Reed's loping, low-key persona. Only a handful of these tracks ("Big Boss Man," "Baby What You Want Me to Do," "Bright Lights, Big City," and "Caress Me Baby") will be familiar to most, with others rescued from the deeper recesses of the bluesman's catalog. That makes this both a smooth drive and an immensely enjoyable learning experience for those wishing to take a field trip down Jimmy Reed's red highway.

Additional personnel: Lou Ann Barton kiss(vocals); Derek O'Brien (guitar); Delbert McClinton, Gary Primich, James Cotton , Kim Wilson (harmonica); Barry Bimh, Ronnie James (bass guitar); Jay Moeller, Wes Starr, George Rains (drums).

RONNIE EARL & DUKE ROBILLARD - The Duke Meets The Earl (2005)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl are among blues guitar's hottest pistols, but their first studio union is no showdown. Although Robillard is steeped in all aspects of technique and Earl is a pure "soul" player, their styles overlap in the Texas and Chicago schools, which grant both giants plenty of space for elegant and biting single-note solos, daredevil string-bending, and ching rhythms. Robillard sings two numbers and "Mighty" Sam McClain, whose red-clay voice is the perfect foil for their emotional fretwork, guests on Earl's heartbroken epic "A Soul That's Been Abused." The real mojo, however, is in the instrumentals, where these virtuosos who emerged from the New England scene to achieve worldwide acclaim maintain a beatific dialogue. They both swing like T-Bone Walker on "Two Bones and a Pick" and trade sliding chords and slide guitar licks on "Zeb's Thing," which dips into down-home Mississippi grit. The highlight is "My Tears," on which Robillard sings sad and dirty, Earl turns sustained notes into Zen koans, and both players stretch their flair for dynamics and brilliant, unhurried, lyrical playing to its limit. Fans of blues guitar need to hear this album.

JOHN FOGERTY - Deja Vu All Over Again (2004)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 192

"Attention rock & roll fans! Presenting John Fogerty - the name you know, the music you trust - in a new, improved 2004 version! DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN contains tunes that admirers of classic rock can appreciate, like the old-school, acoustic blues-rock of "Honey Do." The record features themes reminiscent of Fogerty's heyday, particularly the quasi-political title track. And, just when you thought it couldn't get any better, there's Mark Knopfler laying down those "Sultans of Swing" licks on "Nobody's Here Anymore." Owing a lot to Creedence Clearwater Revival circa PENDULUM, the DEJA VU of the album's title feels more like a summing up. The crispy riffs of "She's Got Baggage" and the Cream-y "In the Garden" may rock harder, leaner, and cleaner than anything Fogerty has ever done, but "Rhubarb Pie" and "I Will Walk with You" have a feel reminiscent of Fogerty's BLUE RIDGE RANGERS album. Elsewhere, the "Wicked Old Witch" could be the wife of Fogerty's earlier "The Old Man Down the Road." Fortunately, this all adds up to the kind of familiarity that breeds anything but contempt, making DÉJA VU a warm reminder of this rock & roll giant's gift."

LUTHER ALLISON - Live In Chicago (1999)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

The blues world lost a treasure when Luther Allison died in 1997, just as he was finally garnering the recognition he so richly deserved. If there's any question of that, this live album, recorded at the 1995 Chicago Blues Festival and at Buddy Guy's Legends, will dispel any such notion. A performer and songwriter of the first order, Allison had the sort of mastery of his instrument that comes from long experience; whether rolling off licks on the "Gambler's Blues/Sweet Little Angel" medley, or playing extended solos on "All the King's Horses," Allison's on the ball and in control at all times. This album contains mostly newer material previously recorded for Alligator Records, like "Soul Fixin' Man," "Bad Love," "All the King's Horses," and "What Have I Done Wrong?" Overall, this is an excellent memorial to a musician who should be remembered.

IAN HUNTER - Shrunken Heads (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

At 68 years old, the very notion that Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople ex frontman) is still making rock records is pretty impressive in itself. Shrunken Heads demonstrates that not only is Hunter making rock records, he’s making some very good rock records too. Good humored, honest, and still musically spry, Hunter will probably never receive the respect that’s due him, which becomes even more unfortunate once you hear how impressive Shrunken Heads actually is. Masterfully alternating between up and mid-tempo rockers along with a few of Hunter’s notoriously well conceived ballads, Shrunken Heads is the epitome of what constitutes a late-career highpoint. It rivals the revered records that his most obvious peer (Bob Dylan) has been doing on his last three releases. And to that point, I think Shrunken Heads is way better than "Modern Times".

V.A. - Hellhound On My Trail: Songs Of Robert Johnson (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

An interesting compilation of many of Robert Johnson's most famous songs, with wide variation in the quality of performance. The album is worth having if you're interested in blues, especially if you like to understand the roots of the music and its development over time. As a series of performances, however, the album is fairly weak. The album features some well known blues singers such as Taj Mahal, and Honeyboy Edwards, now a very old man, who actually played with Robert Johnson. Edwards' interpretation of of a Johnson song may well reflect Johnson's actual style quiteaccurately. Overall, this is an album that will interest committed blues fans, but probably won't appeal much outside that group.

ARGENT

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Eighteen months after keyboard virtuoso Rod ARGENT left the famous sixties band The ZOMBIES, their single "Time Of The Season" from their last album "Odyssey & Oracle" topped the US charts and sold one million copies! There was a hugh demand to re-group The ZOMBIES but Rod ARGENT preferred to form his own band to make more progressive music. He recruted bass player John Rodford, drummer Bob Henritt and guitarist Russ Ballard and called the quartet ARGENT. Under this name they released the eponymous debut album "Argent" in '70, the song "Liar" became a
USA hit and was covered by THREE DOG NIGHT. With the next albums "Ring Of Hands" ('71) and "All Together Now" ('72) ARGENT gained more appreciation and the single "Hold Your Head Up" became a smash hit all over the world. The following album "In Deep" and single "God gave Rock 'N' To You" charted good but the increasing musical problems between Rod ARGENT and Russ Ballard finally escalated after the next album "Nexus" ('74): Russ wasn't pleased at all with Rod's synthesizer escapades, he liked the shorter and more catchy rocksongs. In '74 Russ departure was a fact but without hard feelings. Later that year ARGENT released the double-live record "Encore". Russ was replaced by multi-instrumentalist John Grimaldi and guitarist/vocalist John Verity. Rod was so excited about this new ARGENT that he refused an offer to join YES after WAKEMAN's departure! In '75 ARGENT made the album "Circus" but despite good critics the sales were poor. In '76 ARGENT released the disappointing LP "Counterpoints", ARGENT took his conclusions and broke up his band.

WAYLON JENNINGS & THE WAYMORE BLUES BAND - Never Say Die: The Complete Final Concert (2007)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us VBR

Few performers, in any genre, have had as much sheer charisma as Waylon Jennings, and that comes through loud an clear on this poignant set, recorded live at the Ryman auditorium in January, 2000, when Waylon's health was starting to fade. He's backed by his hand-picked Waymore Blues Band, who put as much heart and soul into the performance as ol' Waylon himself. Waylon, who had to stay in a chair during the show, knew he was on the way out, but he had a great attitude about it, cracking jokes about being "a cripple" and even singing his on gentle epitaph on "Might Be A Good Time." He threw himself fully into each and every song, and graciously shared the limelight with buddies like John Anderson, Travis Tritt and Montgomery Gentry, as well as with his wife, Jessi Colter, who leads on a few tunes and sings some heart-rending duets with Waylon.

ALBERT COLLINS, ROBERT CRAY, JOHNNY COPELAND - Showdown! (1985)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Call it three for the price of one. Far from engaging in a guitar-playing shootout, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland work together incredibly well, achieving a kind of musical synergy that's rarely heard. Copeland and Cray handle most of the vocal duties, and Cray's smooth, soul-tinged voice complements Copeland's growl perfectly. Collins doesn't get to sing as much, but he more than makes up for it with his harmonica on the slow blues "Bring Your Fine Self Home." And of course, all three turn in stellar guitar work, trading solos and rhythm parts with the greatest of ease; Cray was a relative newcomer at the time of this recording, but he more than holds his own. One would be hard pressed to find a better blues collaboration anywhere.

ROGER DALTREY - Martyrs & Madmen: The Best Of Roger Daltrey (1997)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Roger Daltrey's solo albums were often inconsistent and frequently filled with sub-par material, which makes Martyrs Madmen: The Best of Roger Daltrey a welcome addition to his catalog. Culling 20 tracks from all seven of his solo albums (including the McVicar soundtrack), the collection contains nearly every worthwhile song he ever recorded, from "Giving It All Away" and "Free Me" to "After the Fire." Any casual fan - namely, any curious Who fan - will find Martyrs Madmen to be more than a sufficient summary of Daltrey's career, since it not only showcases him at his best, it also sests with its uneven material (even though this just contains highlights, there's still a few dogs scattered throughout the compilation) why he never became a solo star in his own right.

NOTTING HILLBILLIES - Missing... Presumed Having A Good Time (1990)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

On hiatus from Dire Straits, guitarist Mark Knopfler joined with Brendan Croker, Steve Phillips, and Guy Fletcher for 1990's Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time. The result is a low-key, joyous run-through of mostly traditional, blues-based songs with a handful of originals. Despite the high-profile presence of Knopfler, The Notting Hillbillies succeed in sounding like a band with Knopfler often taking a backseat to his bandmates, although he does sing lead on the lovely "Your Own Sweet Way." The styles range from the gorgeous harmonies of "Railroad Worksong" with some mournful guitar from Knopfler, to the '50s-style rock ballad "Bewildered," to the breezy, tropical-flavored "One Way Gal." Missing: Presumed Having a Good Time is a delightful record that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Rocker revamps the Stray Cats' "Rock This Town" as a minor-key tour-de-force, while "Running From the Hounds," featuring Dale's masterly slide guitar, is a good-time, bluesy romp.

JEFF BECK - Jeff (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

For JEFF, legendary guitar god Jeff Beck reunited with Andy Wright, the producer for Beck's prior effort, 2001's YOU HAD IT COMING. In keeping with the creative theme of his last album, the Wallington native avoids being hidebound to the kind of classic-rock rut into which so many of his peers have fallen. Instead, he maintains his edge as an innovative string-bender by embracing new sounds and technological advances at the risk of alienating traditionalist fans. For this particular go-round, collaborators include experimental guitar/electronics cat David Torn of Splattercell fame, and Liverpudlian electronic trio Apollo 440. Bashing rhythms provide the impetus for much of Beck's high-energy guitar work, with Apollo 440 doing the biggest degree of pushing on the crash-and-bang of "Grease Monkey" and equally intriguing "Hot Rod Honeymoon," both alluding to Beck's well-known love of muscle cars. The first song finds Beck's guitar screaming and singing over the cacophony of Chemical Brothers-sized beats while the latter tune features bluesy riffs, clattering rhythms, and occasional Beach Boys-like harmonies. The former Yardbird also shines on calmer fare including the ethereal "JB's Blues" and "Bulgaria," a majestic folk song featuring accompaniment by a 40-piece orchestra and some of Beck's most poignant playing.

DUKE ROBILLARD - Blue Mood (2003)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Duke Robillard's command of guitarist T-Bone Walker's flashy but fluid style - full of rich passing chords, rippling melodies, sweetly sculpted bends, and elegant jazz-influenced phrasing-anchors this 12-song tribute to the pioneering electric bluesman from Texas. But it's obvious that Robillard has absorbed every detail of Walker's music. The horn arrangements are lush and, when muted trumpet and clarinet enter the mix on "I'm Still in Love With You" and "Born to Be No Good," downright sensual. Every track swings, from the revved-up guitar showcase "T-Bone Boogie" to the slow, simmering heartbreak ballads "Blue Mood" and "Love Is a Gamble." And Robillard emulates the bold, declamatory side of Walker's singing style with husky power and authority. Although no substitute for T-Bone's own high-voltage recordings, these tracks are a winning testimonial to the durability of Walker's creative genius.

Shannon brilliantly combines elements of funk, jazz, and rock & roll into his guitar playing, and his soulful vocals are not your run-of-the-mill stylings. TOM WAITS & CRYSTAL GAYLE - One From the Heart (1982)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Tom Waits's first full foray into the movie business would have been much more widely praised at the time, and the soundtrack would played today, if the film had not met with bewilderment and accusations that Francis Ford Coppola's ego had created a monstrous, expensive folly. To be sure, One from the Heart is a curate's egg of a movie, but the songs, production, (by Waits's early studio mentor, Bones Howe), and the performances capture pure romance far better than the gauche visuals of the movie. Set over the course of one night, the soundtrack essays the thoughts of a pair of lovers--Waits and Crystal Gayle. Although working in an unfamiliar idiom, Gayle is a fine singer who is well suited to the material. Lush string and smoky jazz-club arrangements adorn these torch songs. There are a few hints of the weird and surreal Waits, particularly on the splendid "You Can't Unring a Bell." For Waits's fans that love his romantic sides, this album contains as many reasons to be cheerful as Blue Valentine and Closing Time.

BIG BILL MORGANFIELD - Ramblin' Mind (2001)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

With his debut, Rising Son, Big Bill Morganfield firmly established himself as following in the footsteps of his famous father (that's Muddy Waters, in case you hadn't heard). The album, an impressively performed collection of original songs and lesser-known Waters compositions, was notable for simultaneously staying true to the electric blues style Waters helped pioneer, while also showcasing Morganfield's distinctive voice. True, his music sounds a lot like his father's; however, that's due not to slavish imitation, but to a desire to master a very traditional style of music to which the rules are well understood, if not always followed to such great result.

Not a day goes by without Schenker picking up one of his beloved guitars, preferably a white Gibson Flying V, and letting his apparently inexhaustible creativity run wild. Schenker: “I play the guitar every day, and I record most of my ideas on a small recording machine so I can develop the best of them into proper songs later. That’s how I’ve always created my numbers, everything is spontaneous and natural. My compositions are always authentic, they’re an accurate reflection of what I happen to be feeling at the moment.”

THE MOODY BLUES - To Our Children's Children's Children (1969)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

Recorded in 1969 and released in 1970, this Moody Blues album captures the band in all of their glorious excess. With intellectualized lyrics, overblown arrangements, and rampant experimentation, the Moody Blues still manage to create an evocative, psychedelic musical experience. The recurring "Eyes Of A Child" is a tender ballad with glorious vocal harmonies. All of the moody men provide compositions; between the five of them and a variety of instruments, they emulate a much larger ensemble. Mellotrons meld with electric guitars and various woodwinds for a grandiose, orchestral-rock approach. Very English sounding and very ambitious, this record catches the band just before they collapsed under their own weight. A representative period piece, there are several worthwhile moments here amidst all the grandeur.

With musical muscle from his road-tested band (guitarists Brophy Dale and Buzz Campbell, and drummer Jimmy Sage) BLACK CAT BONE is an amazing collection of ten Rocker originals (with one co-written with guitarist Brophy Dale), one song by guitarist Buzz Campbell, and reinvented covers from Bob Dylan (One More Night) and Leon Payne (Lost Highway, made famous by Hank Williams). The CD's scorching rockabilly, roadhouse romps and straight-ahead, old-school rock `n' roll, create by far the strongest set of songs of Rocker's solo career.

ALBERT COLLINS & THE ICE BREAKERS - Live '92 - '93 (1995)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us 320

These performances were recorded shortly before Collins' death in late 1993, but rather than sounding tired, they offer proof that the "Master of the Telecaster" remained a commanding stage presence until the end. Albert Collins' highly original, percussive guitar playing is still sharp, and his vocals are strong and soulful. He is backed by an excellent band which includes two sax players and a trumpet, and they offer solid backing and the occational soul-revue riff without overwhelming the 60-year old guitarist.
