QuickPwn v2.25-2 for firmware 2.2.1

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 2.2.1 firmare from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Please note that the Windows version of QuickPwn has been updated to version 2.2.5-2

1.GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone running 2.2 firmware and you want to keep your ability to use yellowns0w (or the option to use it in the future) do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
2.Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update. If you want to use Yellownsn0w you will need to create and restore using a custom .ipsw that will allow you to update safely to 2.2.1 without applying the 02.30.03 baseband update. You’ll then have a 3G iPhone running 2.2.1 with an older baseband version that is still vulnerable to yellowsn0w, following these steps ensures that yellowsn0w will still operate.
3.Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
4.Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
5.At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.
6.These apps are suitable for the recent 2.2.1 release.
7.The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband). Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.
8.Users of OS X 10.5.6 will be unable to use DFU mode correctly, please see the note towards the end of this post to easily fix this issue.
Baseband 101

The ‘baseband’ is the name given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G
This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 2.2.1 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to Pwn and Jailbreak. This will add Cydia and Installer too.

Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband
This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2.1 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will ensure that you can still use “yellowsn0w” the iPhone 3G unlock application. To upgrade your phone to 2.2.1 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still give you any new stuff from 2.2.1

There are plenty of tutorials about this process on the web, but PwnageTool contains intuitive graphics and easy to follow prompts that should have you up and running in no time at all. Please note: PwnageTool is only available for Mac OS X.

Locked iPhone 3G
If you are using your iPhone with one carrier and have no interest in the possibility of an iPhone 3G unlock in the near future then just restore or upgrade to 2.2.1 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)
Update or Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then run QuickPwn to do the magic, ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything.

iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)
Update to 2.2.1 with iTunes and run QuickPwn.

iPod Touch 2G (New iPod Touch)
Sorry, no support at this time, but Redsn0w is being actively researched and developed.

Fixing DFU mode on 10.5.6
As noted previously OS X 10.5.6 introduced a bug that affected the use of DFU mode. with some Macs. There have been previously published hacks and techniques to fix this, but here is another method that can be used to temporarily restore DFU functionality in order to use QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
1.You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future - http://developer.apple.com/mac/
2.Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
3.Unplug non-vital USB equipment, such as external DVD writers, USB scanners, USB mass storage devices, at the most leave a Keyboard and Mouse connected.
4.Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
5.Reboot your system!
6.Perform necessary DFU activity with QuickPwn or PwnageTool.
7.Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55”
8.Intall IOUSBFamily-327.4.0.pkg from within the disk image
9.Reboot your system!
10.Reattach your USB peripherals.

Squiggles v1.3

Decent Paint App. One of the good ones.
Packed full of features that more expensize apps don't have and you can draw accurately on it.
One of the best paint programs for iPhone and its an absolute steal for the price.
There are much worse for alot more.
Got rid of 3 apps when I found this one
Well thought out... I can draw, futz w/photos, filter,clone, do cartoon captions, add text.
The offset finger cursor is really clever and handy. Love all the tool options such as opacity and paint
smoothing. Nice that layers stay editable. Be sure and go to the website, lots of info and things you can do that aren't
obvious at first. Works in silly or serious mode! Feels like the developer actually uses the app.

Not a bad return on a single dollar, except that the odds of being dealt a Royal Flush are 649,750 to 1. This is because the throttle governor automatically increases the engine power to maintain the desired rotor RPM as you increase the load on the rotor by increasing the rotor pitch. This is how the real helicopters work, and how we simulate them on the iPhone.

but, if you want to have manual tail-rotor control to yaw the craft, hold your finger down on the tail-rotor slider for a few moments

In addition to the new yaw-control system, we also now have a full EFIS panel on the BlackHawk.

TEST: Bluetooth on iPhone?

Here's a little public teaser of an unfinished project (yet!) called Bluesn0w.
This is little app for all supporters out there. Although it doesn't have a GUI yet and and can only be run though MobileTerminal, this pre-release is to show our work and that we are well on the way to fully functional iPhone Bluetooth.
This app will print the MAC address of any near by, discoverable Bluetooth devices after a 10 second scan, which is more then the Settings app achieves while scanning for devices! It does not yet set the iPhone device discoverable or pair devices to the iPhone, but we are well on the way to implementing those features and creating a GUI for our little sampler.
We just wanted to get something out to you guys before the year was up and let you all know we are working hard!
So get ready for BIG things to come!

TUTORIAL: 3G Unlocker

The iPhone dev team’s 3g unlock, yellowsnow is out. There are some changes in how it works. The 3g unlock will require you to be on baseband 2.28.00 which comes with iPhone OS v2.2. This means that those of you that pwned your iPhone to 2.2 without a full restore will now need to restore to 2.2 directly in iTunes so that your baseband gets updated to 2.28. You can check your baseband version in settings, general, about menu. Look for modem firmware. Here is a brief set of steps for those that need a 3g unlock:

1) You must be on 2.2 with modem firmware 2.28.00. If you are on 2.2 firmware but used pwnage you probably have baseband modem firmware 2.11.07 (from 2.1) or something earlier. This will not work. SO first step is to check your modem firmware: settings, general, about, read modem firmware. If you are on 2.28.* then you are done and can skip to step 3.
2) Restore to 2.2 in iTunes and jailbreak with quickpwn. You cannot use pwnage for this. You must restore in iTunes stock. Pwnage disabled baseband update. It will not help you.
3) After you are jailbroken repeat step #1 to verify you are on 2.28.00 modem firmware. If so, fire up Cydia and go to sources and add the dev team’s cydia source. (Note: dev team asked for no one to link the source directly. Please visit this page: http://blog.iphone-dev.org ).
4) Install yellow snow app and reboot your iPhone with your new sim card installed. Wait 60 seconds or so for carrier lock. If it doesn’t connect, try pulling the sim and inserting again and waiting another 60 seconds.

Note this is an unobtrusive unlock. In the past, the baseband was flashed. There is no baseband flashing for this. It should be safer as nothing is being flashed so nothing can be bricked. The unlock installs an activate daemon that runs on boot. This actively injects necessary data to keep the device unlocked. If you uninstall the unlock you should be back to where you started without any harm.
This is still in beta stages and actively being developed. If it’s not working well for you check back in Cydia every few hours and see if there is an update.

Troubleshooting:
For those that cant get this to work, and don’t want to wait for dev team to stabilize it, you can try messing with it in the command line. Reboot iPhone with no sim card inserted. Pull up mobile term and type: yellowsn0w -s and then insert the sim card. Wait a bit and it should connect.
Also make sure your SIM PIN is disabled.

Quick question and answer:
Q: Will this risk ruining my baseband?
A: No, it does not flash your baseband. It is a program that stays running on your iPhone. It is safe.
Q: Does the daemon take up a lot of CPU or drain the battery?
A: Probably not. It seems to say 0% cpu and 600kb RAM used. I would not worry about it for now.
Q: How can I update my baseband to 2.2 without restoring in iTunes
A: Right now you cannot. Maybe later someone will release something with bbupdaterextreme and a fls image but no such package is available, has been developed or tested for you.
Q: Can I use pwnage instead of quickpwn?
A: No, pwnage disables baseband update. You must restore a stock firmware image.
Q: Where do I get the firmware image?
A: If you click restore in iTunes, iTunes will automatically download the latest firmware. Or you can get it from my firmware page.
Remember this is still beta software so if it is not working well, it is likely not something you did wrong. Check for updates.

Bugdom 2 v2.0

Bugdom 2 is a 3D action-adventure game. In this game you play Skip McFly, a grasshopper who explores the areas inside and around a house, and encounter both friends an enemies. You'll have to perform tasks to get help from the other critters, and the game is loaded with unique gameplay on every level! For example, you'll surf down the rain gutters, bomb anthills from a balsa airplane, rescue mice trapped in mousetraps, race in slot-cars, etc. etc.
The graphics in Bugdom 2 are absolutely stunning! Beautiful 3D animation and great characters from spear-throwing roaches to blood-sucking ticks. No other iPhone game is as diverse as Bugdom 2, and we believe this is the best iPhone game that we've done so far.

* MAJOR 2.0 UPDATE *
You can now choose between the original "accelerometer" based input or the new "virtual gamepad" controller. Many people had a hard time controlling Bugdom 2 with the accelerometer, so we've added an on-screen gamepad which makes it MUCH easier to control.
This new version will default to the new virtual gamepad, but if you want to switch back to the accelerometer then select it in the game's Settings dialog. Note, however, that some of the "specialty" levels such as the Gutter and Balsa Airplane levels still use the accelerometer for control since it works best on those levels.

3G Unlock ONLINE!

We have released the 0.9.1 beta yellowsn0w 3G unlock application. Please note the following:
BASICS
** The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
** The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).
** You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.
** yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.
DETAILS
** There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix.
** For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
** After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.
RANDOM
** The application is version 0.9 0.9.1. This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
** The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.
** Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.
** Happy 2009 and enjoy!
The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations. If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can :)

UPDATES
1.Soon you’ll see yellowsn0w 0.9.1 in the repos. It uses a much longer delay to let your SIM card initialize. If you have problems with 0.9.0, try this one and wait a full minute after you see homescreen, then reinsert sim card. We need both success and failure reports to tune this across the world, so please be patient (but please also report result!)
2.If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line -q right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it)
3.No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.
4.The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.
