P1140042 The Bells of Shoreditch

P1140042 The Bells of Shoreditch

London E2, Shoreditch
Promenades & Streetscapes,
St Leonard's Shoreditch
St Leonard's, Shoreditch is the ancient parish church of Shoreditch, often known simply as Shoreditch Church. It is located at the intersection of Shoreditch High Street with Hackney Road, within the London Borough of Hackney. The current building dates from about 1740. The church is mentioned in the line "When I grow rich, say the bells of Shoreditch" from the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons[1] and is noted as being the resting place of many actors from the Tudor period.
For the civil and ecclesiastical history of the parish, see Shoreditch (parish).

The original church is possibly Saxon in origin, though the first historical reference to it occurs in the 12th century.
Memorial to Tudor actors buried in the church

The church was situated near The Theatre, England's first purpose built playhouse, built in Shoreditch in 1576, and the nearly contemporary Curtain Theatre (built in 1577).[2] Several members of the theatrical profession, from the Elizabethan period are buried in the church including:

* James Burbage, the founder of The Theatre, England's first playhouse.
* His son Richard, who was the leading man in many of Shakespeare's plays, which were first performed in the contemporary Shoreditch theatres.
* The comedian Richard Tarlton, who was a stalwart of the pre-Shakespearian stage.

These, with others of their profession from the period, are commemorated by a large classical memorial erected by the London Shakespeare League in 1913, inside the church, which serves as a reminder of Shoreditch's Shakespearian heritage.

In 1774, the Shoreditch Vestry levied a special poor rate for the purpose of setting up a workhouse for the parish of St Leonard's which highlights the level of poverty in the area.[2]
[edit] Current building
One of the bells, removed for maintenance

Following the partial collapse of the tower in 1716 the medieval church was rebuilt in Palladian style built by George Dance the Elder in 1736 - 1740,[1] with a soaring steeple 192 feet tall, an imitation of Christopher Wren's magnificent steeple on St Mary-le-Bow in Cheapside,[1] and a giant four columned, pedimented Tuscan portico. Inside the church the entablature is supported by giant Doric columns. The new church was designed by George Dance, architect of the Mansion House. Many original 18th century fixtures and fittings remain, including the font, the pulpit, the communion table, clock, organ case, bread cupboards and commandment boards. It was lit with gaslight in 1817, the first in London.
The Rev'd Paul Turp, Vicar of Shoreditch

The parish stocks and whipping post stand in the porch of the church and in the churchyard is the Shoreditch parish pump.

Iron Builder 2.0 SlyOwl vs Karf Oohlu

Iron Builder 2.0 SlyOwl vs Karf Oohlu

Super Action Battle Poster!

A new round of Iron Builder has started at Builder's Lounge.

Just waiting for fantastic MOCs to fill the ? marks!

Good Luck Sly and Karf!

This latest round is being hosted by Tadashistate:

From his official announcement -

tadashistate says:
Hear ye, hear ye, the next Iron Builder Challenge is upon us. I, this round's guest host, am here to atone for the lack of merriment in the last round by making sure that we get some serious excitement out of these two contestants. With new rules in place, parts already in hand, and men ready to show the world that they’ve got skill.

The brick, with which our contestants will shape their fates, is none other than the sand green robot body!

Without further adieu I present the Iron Builder himself, the thunder from down under, the monkey master, Karf Oohlu!
And challenging him, the knight in shining armour, the king of the seven seas, SlyOwl! Will Karf, the veteran of the arena, be able to hold his throne against our young contender? What will triumph, SlyOwl's hilarious scenes or Karf's fantastic world of craziness. Only time will tell as both builders have demonstrated serious proficiency with the brick so there is no doubt in my mind that our mystery piece will see some love!

Keep in mind though, each contender must complete two entries, one at the half way mark and the other before the end of the month. This in no way means that you may only submit two. On the contrary, we encourage as many entries as possible!

There you go gentlemen, have at ‘er!

Iron pillar at Qutb Minar, Delhi, India

Iron pillar at Qutb Minar, Delhi, India

Iron pillar of Delhi

The iron pillar is one of the world’s foremost metallurgical curiosities. The pillar, almost seven metres high and weighing more than six tonnes, was erected by Chandragupta II Vikramaditya (375–414 CE). It is the only piece of the Jain temple remaining, which stood there before being destroyed by Qutb-ud-din Aibak. A fence was erected around the pillar due to the popularity of a tradition that considered it good luck if you could stand with your back to the pillar and make your hands meet behind it.

The Qutab complex, also spelled Qutb or Qutub, is an array of monuments and buildings at Mehrauli in Delhi, India, the most famous of which is the Qutb Minar. This complex was first constructed by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, the first ruler of the Slave Dynasty, and his successor Iltutmish (aka Altmash) in his new city called the Qila-Rai-Pithora near Prithivraj Chauhan's older city. The complex was added to by many subsequent rulers, including Iltutmish and Ala ud din Khilji as well as the British.[1]

The most famous monument situated in the complex is the Qutub Minar; other important constructions in the complex are the Quwwat ul-Islam Mosque, the Alai Gate, the Alai Minar and the Iron pillar. Twenty-seven previous Jain temples were destroyed and their materials reused to construct the minar and other monuments of the complex.

Frozen Turkey for Thanksgiving & a True Short Story by Me

Frozen Turkey for Thanksgiving & a True Short Story by Me

"How Things Appeared in Albuquerque, New Mexico" or "Life in the Fat Lane"

It was Thanksgiving Day in 1979, and as a single mom, my two little children and I were moving from Tulsa, Oklahoma back to Eugene, Oregon, where we had lived years before. It was a long drive. My son got the front seat, as he was the older child. They didn’t have car seat regulations back then; so my daughter was in the back seat, being a great sport, piled on a bunch of quilts, and one last minute skillet that the movers didn’t take on the van. My children could not have behaved any better.

I was recovering from a major stomach operation. I had my stomach surgically stapled in hopes of weight loss. Back then, it meant a long scar right down my middle and an 8 day stay in the hospital. I was 313 pounds when I had it done, and hadn’t yet lost much weight. So to say I still looked pretty heavy would not have been a lie. My son was eight years old, and my little girl was almost four and a half. Neither one was overweight, and neither one was a big eater.

It was afternoon as we drove through Albuquerque, New Mexico. I decided we should stop to eat. I saw one of those great big signs with changeable letters. It said All-You-Can-Eat-Buffet, includes Drink & Dessert for $6.95. Remember, this was 1979. That would have been a lot for me to pay if I had to pay for each of us, and none of us would be able to eat much; so I asked for the manager when I got to the little stand where I was supposed to buy my tickets. I explained to him that I had just had my stomach stapled, and could not eat much more than 4 ounces of food. I showed him my children in line with me, and said they couldn’t eat much either. I asked him, that if I promised the three of us combined would eat no more than one average adult, could we just pay for one $6.95 dinner? He said yes that would be fine, and he told the hostess to just charge me for one dinner, and he told me how very appreciative he was that I asked first and got an OK. And he wished us a Happy Thanksgiving.

So we headed into the dining room, which was a big one, because this was some sort of large motel/hotel. I don't recall if it was the Thunderbird, or a Holiday Inn. I discovered that a waitress would take our drink orders, and dessert orders, but we would take a plate up to the buffet and choose our meal, or meals, as the waitress thought. She asked me what everyone would have to drink. My son said Pepsi or something like that. My daughter said chocolate milk. I told the waitress that we were sharing, as we only paid for one meal. I say we will have plain milk, as that is something both of my kids could share. I didn’t need nor want anything but water and probably not much of that either.

We had gone up to the buffet, and I had filled one plate with turkey and fixings, and took no more than an average adult might have taken. It certainly wasn’t a gluttonous platter of food. I got a little salad plate and then I knew I would have the saucer for the coffee cup I didn’t use. I took the plate back to our table. I had the plate of food in front of me, and planned to divide it up, with the coffee cup saucer for my portion, salad plate for my little girl‘s portion, and let my boy have the dinner plate of what was left.

The waitress brought one milk back to the table. She only knew what she saw, and that was a three hundred plus pound woman with a big plate of food in front of her, and nothing in front of my children. I was in the process of cutting some turkey for my kids and myself. She was not privy to me giving them more than I got, only that I had a knife and fork in hand and looked as if I were about to eat a big plate of food. The waitress checked me out, noting my girth, and probably thought the children wouldn’t end up with so much as a bite of food, or a sip of the milk. The milk was also in front of me; but she didn’t know it didn’t stay there long. She sort of left with a harrumph, and went to wait on other diners.

We each ate our food, and had a good meal, when the waitress arrived again to take our pie order. My son wanted mince and my daughter wanted pumpkin or vice versa. Anyway, I settled it. I told the waitress, once again, that we were only entitled to one dessert, and we would have pumpkin, something easy to split for the 3 of us, and that all of us liked. She left in a huff, perhaps even harrumphier than she was before

I distinctly told her one piece of pumpkin pie. She came back with 2 pieces of pie, one pumpkin, one mince, and a dollop of whipped cream on top of each. With a final flair of hurrumphyness, she slams them down a bit, one in front of each child, not to scare the children, but to be sure I noticed. She gave them each a fork, and then looked me right in the eye and said, “YOU can starve these little children on Thanksgiving Day if you want to, but I am not going to have any part of it!”

She could not have been more mistaken, but I can se

Christmas Candy buffet bar - invite

Christmas Candy buffet bar - invite

this is the invite I did, printed & cut up, then stapled to a small plastic bowl and left on each staff's desk for them to fill as they wanted throughout the day.... and they kept coming back for more:)

From all the inspiration gathered here on Flickr, I suggested to my manager that I'd create a Christmas Candy buffet bar for our in-house Xmas office party... I set up the night before and when the office opened the next morning, staff were greeted with this table in Reception... I also left a small bowl and invite on everyone's desk (80+ ppl)... the Receptionist rang me to especially tell me people were very impressed, taking photos, asking about who did it, standing around and discussing it all, taking food :) she said that it really lifted morale and put everyone in the spirit for the xmas lunch :)
I was very happy with how it turned out, but it was a lot of work to make all the food, buy all the jar-ware, 'lug' it all into the office and hide it over a few days, then make the fresh food on the morning before work ... staff made so many compliments that it was definitely worthwhile though :)

Surviving buildings include the farmhouse, cartshed, bathhouse, smokehouse, a well and a beautiful cottage garden.
