The hydrangea blooms by the front porch steps will be the next thing to prune. It seems a shame to cut back these favourite flowers of mine, but heavy fall rains will flatten the bush and crack the stems if I don't.
The fake wasp nest (from a recent uploaded photo) can be seen hanging by the front door.

Sunder Nursery

Sunder Nursery

Percy-Lancaster laid out the Sunder Nursery in Delhi, with Humayun's Tomb as its backdrop. Apart from seeds and saplings, the nursery delivered flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables, on order. As soon as Lutyens and Baker designed plans for the city of New Delhi with broad roads and avenues, he was commissioned to set up a nursery and select trees to be grown at their sides. He did this, by planting 15,000 trees and 150 miles of hedges.

This is where various species were brought for `field trials' to see if they would do well in Delhi's climate and soil conditions. At home in Sunder Nursery are species including Pink Cedar (the only species of its kind found in Delhi), Atalantia (a rare tree species), Khasi (the only one of its kind in the Capital) and West Indian Elm (the sole surviving specimen of its species), to name a few.

Even "desi babool", fast disappearing from the inner city, finds sanctuary in Sunder Nursery.

But all we saw on a very hot and humid August afternoon were .... Cannas!!

Technostorks: A Documentary on Infertility and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Technostorks documents the true life stories of three couples - Joann and Sean, Nora and Eric, and Wendy and Rodney - as they go through infertility and in-vitro fertilization. It is the first IVF cycle for Sean and Joann, the second for Wendy and Rodney, and the fourth, and most likely the last, cycle for Nora and Eric. Technostorks documents the couples' most private moments, showing images never before seen on the screen. We follow couples into the operating room to witness egg retrievals and embryo transfers, hear their views on living with infertility, spirituality, and parenthood, and learn with them the outcomes of their IVF cycles. Throughout the film, top experts explain the technological, psychological, and spiritual aspects of assisted reproduction. In the end, not all of our couples will achieve pregnancy, but they will all undergo a personal transformation.

Flower Felony

Flower Felony

Caught in the act! This giant, chubby carpenter bee is a nectar thief! It was perforating the crane flower to get at the nectar, without providing pollination. Its vibrating thorax made a loud buzzing sound. Perhaps you can make out the faint blur of its rapidly moving wings. I wish I could have captured them.

This 'felonius behavior' was reported by Charles Darwin in the late1800s.

"Therefore all plants must suffer in some degree when bees obtain their nectar in a felonious manner by biting holes through the corolla."
Darwin, C. R. (1876). The effects of cross and self fertilisation in the vegetable kingdom. London: John Murray.

Bee and flower. Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred in plants, thereby enabling fertilization and sexual reproduction. Pollen grains, which contain the male gametes (sperm) to where the female gamete(s) are contained within the carpel;in gymnosperms the pollen is directly applied to the ovule itself. The receptive part of the carpel is called a stigma in the flowers of angiosperms. The receptive part of the gymnosperm ovule is called the micropyle. Picture with focus on foreground. Fertilization Combo - Conception Support, His & Hers Bottles., (Maximum)

Fertilizer - Hers helps improve fertility by regulating the menstrual cycle and correcting hormone imbalance (corpus lustrum insufficiency) without the incidence of multiple births associated with drug therapy. Fertilizer - His is an herbal formula that contains a wide variety of antioxidants for improving overall reproductive health designed to increase sperm mobility, sperm count, and linearity. Fertilization Combo premium combination of amino acids, herbs, vitamins and minerals improves overall reproductive health and helps treat many of the deficiencies known to decrease fertility. Vitex agnus-castus (chasteberry herb) enhances hormone and ovulation frequency. The antioxidants green tea, vitamin E, and selenium improve overall reproductive health. Vitamins B6, and B12, folic acid, iron, magnesium, and zinc address specific deficiencies that are known to impact female fertility. L-arginine is an amino acid that stimulates the reproductive organs by improving circulation. Fertilizer - Hers is not a drug. It is a daily nutritional supplement. While it is not intended for the treatment of any disease, it may be used as a soft approach to optimize fertility in a natural manner, as an option prior to, or instead of, hard options such as in vitro fertilization or fertility drugs. Nutritional supplements take a more gradual, gentle, natural approach compared to drugs. The focus with supplements is the optimization of health and wellness, rather than the treatment of disease. D rugs are used for the treatment of specific conditions, often by altering biological pathways, sometimes in a very powerful or unnatural manner, and often with undesirable side effects. In the case of fertility drugs, multiple births are a common, undesirable side effect.

On the Top of Maui

On the Top of Maui

Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakala ("house of the sun") to the summit area only, most likely because from the west side of the island, the sun could be seen rising up over the eastern side of the mountain. In Hawaiian folklore, the depression at the summit of Haleakala was home to the grandmother of the demigod Maui. According to the legend, Maui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day. In modern times, Haleakala has become synonymous with the entire East Maui volcano.

From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 11.25 km (7 mi) across, 3.2 km (2 mi) wide, and nearly 800 m (2,600 ft) deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones. The potentially active volcano has produced numerous eruptions in the last 30,000 years, including in the last 500 years. This volcanic activity has been along two rift zones, the southwest and east. These two rift zones together form an arc that extends from La Perouse Bay on the southwest, through the Haleakala Crater and to Hana, to the east. The east rift zone continues under the ocean beyond the east coast of Maui as Haleakala Ridge, making the combined rift zones one of the longest in the Hawaiian Islands chain.

Common name: Marijuana, Hemp, Gallow grass • Hindi: Ganja • Manipuri: ????? Ganja • Marathi: Ganja • Tamil: Bangi • Malayalam: Kanchavu • Telugu: Ganjari-Chettu • Bengali: Jia
Botanical name: Cannabis sativa Family: Cannabaceae (Marijuana family)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marijuana, is a coarse, rangy annual that grows 6-12 ft in height. The leaves are palmately divided into 3-7 narrow, toothed segments, most about 3-6 in long. The stems are rough and scabrous and the inner bark is fibrous. Hemp is normally a dioecious species, with male and female flowers on separate plants, but sometimes bisexual plants occur. The female flowers are in greenish leafy spikes a little less than 1 in long, borne on stem tips, and the male flowers are yellowish, tiny, and borne in axillary clusters. The flowers are inconspicuous and without scent; they are pollinated not by insects, but by the wind. The fruit is an achene, which is a hard, one-seeded fruit that remains closed at maturity. The subspecies, indica, has narrower leaves and generally grows taller than the nominate race. There is only one species of Cannabis, but numerous forms have been selected for various purposes. The hemp plant is not particularly attractive and has no ornamental qualities. The tough fiber of the plant, cultivated as hemp, has numerous textile uses. Its seed, chiefly used as caged-bird feed, is a valuable source of protein, energy, and psychoactive and physiologically active chemical compounds known as cannabinoids that are consumed for recreational, medicinal, and spiritual purposes. When so used, preparations of flowers and leaves, sometimes called marijuana, and preparations derived from resinous extract, sometimes called hashish, are usually consumed by inhaling a vapor released by smoking or heating, or by oral ingestion. Historically, tinctures, teas, and ointments were also common preparations.

i have sprayed a fine water mist so the cobweb becomes visible, if you look close.

there are also some birdseed hemp plants, starting to grow rather slowly.

in the picture it looks like the two plants are footlicking, not sure if they have feelings for each other. well maybe one is female, and the other is male? soon this will turn out: the females are growing much bigger, and the male plants will start to develope pollen. later the females will develope flower pistils.

these bird seeds plants are just planted for decoration.

Lowe's Lollypop Flowers 3/3

This set of three is a progression of the photo I was demonstrating to my wife as she became interested in the capabilities of Photoshop. Please look at the progression.

This is the final image as a result of my wife's curiosity on color. After landing at where we were in image 2, I called up the gradient map, and she was intrigued as to what it did to the color of the flowers (I still had the B&W mask of everything else on top). After reviewing the different choices of colors, she settled on this image as her favorite result. I can see why, with the sharp definition of the petals...

As always, I appreciate your views, your comments and your fave's... Thanks for stopping and viewing!

This is the late John A. Crow's classic study of the cultural history of Spain and its people, which he last updated in 1985 but which seems as fresh and pertinent as when he first wrote it. Crow devoted a lifetime to Hispanic studies and here provides a historical interpretation of Spanish civilization from its earliest beginnings to the present. The scope of this study is remarkable and includes chapters on Roman Spain, the Jews in Spain, the Moors, life in medieval towns, and the Golden Age of Spain, plus a view of Franco's legacy.

New York Botanical Garden Library Building, Fountain of Life, and Tulip Tree Allee

New York Botanical Garden Library Building, Fountain of Life, and Tulip Tree Allee

New York Botanical Garden, Fordham, The Bronx, New York City, New York, United States

The grand neo-Renaissance style New York Botanical Garden Museum Building, along with the Fountain of Life and Tulip Tree Allee, form a distinguished and monumental Beaux-Arts civic space within the largest and most renowned botanical garden in the country. Founded in 1891 and located within Bronx Park, the Botanical Garden showcases one of the world’s great collections of plants and serves as an educational center for gardening and horticulture.

The Museum (now Library) Building, designed in 1896 by architect Robert W. Gibson and constructed in 1898-1901, originally housed the Garden’s preserved botanical specimens and was the first American museum devoted solely to botany. The long four-story structure, clad in greyish-buff brick and buff terra cotta, features a symmetrical design and classically-inspired ornament characteristic of Beaux-Arts civic buildings at the turn of the century, with a rusticated and pedimented central pavilion with monumental columns and copper-clad saucer dome, flanked by sections and end pavilions with monumental pilasters. The energetic bronze sculptural group of the Fountain of Life (1903-05), designed by Carl (Charles) E. Tefft for Gibson’s marble plinth and basins, depicts a cherub astride a dolphin atop a globe and two web-footed plunging horses being restrained by a female and a boy, surprising a merman and mermaid in the basin below. The fountain was restored in 2005. The Tulip Tree Allee, consisting of trees lining both sides of the drives leading to the fountain, was planted in 1903-11 at the direction of Nathaniel Lord Britton, first director of the Garden.
New York Botanical Garden in Bronx Park

As early as 1888, the Torrey Botanical Club, the largest such American society, took on the mission of establishing a great botanical garden for New York City. The club was reportedly inspired by the description of Elizabeth Gertrude Knight Britton, and her husband, Nathaniel Lord Britton, both academics and botanists, of a recent visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, England. A committee of the club, and the Brittons, in particular, promoted the idea, gaining the support of newspapers and influential New Yorkers. By the following year, club members had selected Bronx Park in the Bronx as a favorable location; the park land had been acquired by New York City in 1884 in anticipation of Consolidation. This was part of the vast former land holdings (beginning in 1792 until 1870) of the Lorillard family of tobacco fortune fame. According to the censuses of 1800 and 1810, Peter Lorillard owned one slave. It is unknown whether or not slaves were used in their Bronx operations, but tobacco production in the South would have been based on slave labor.

After an act was drawn up by Addison Brown and Charles Daly, two federal judges with botanical/horticultural interests, the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) was established by the New York State Legislature in 1891 (with an amendment in 1894) for

the purpose of establishing and maintaining a botanical garden and museum and arboretum therein, for the collection and culture of plants, flowers, shrubs and trees, the advancement of botanical science and knowledge and the prosecution of original researches therein and in kindred subjects, for affording instruction in the same, for the prosecution and exhibition of ornamental and decorative horticulture and gardening, and for the entertainment, recreation and instruction of the people.

NYBG was to be managed by a Board of Directors, consisting of the president of Columbia College, and its professors of botany, geology, and chemistry; the president of the Torrey Botanical Club; the president of the New York City Board of Education; the mayor; and the president of the Board of Commissioners of the Dept. of Public Parks; along with nine elected members. The legislation stipulated that when sufficient funds (not less than $250,000) were raised within five years of its passage, the Board was authorized to appropriate a portion of Bronx Park, not to exceed 250 acres, as well as to construct “a suitable fireproof building for such botanical museum and herbarium, with lecture rooms and laboratories for instruction”4 and other necessary structures. The City was then to issue bonds for $500,000.

In June 1895, it was announced that the $250,000 goal had been met, with major contributions from such titans as Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, J.D. Rockefeller, and Cornelius Vanderbilt II (president of the Board). At that time it was noted that “the scientific Directors have appointed a committee to confer with the experts of the Park Board in regard to the location to be chosen for the garden in Bronx Park.”5 The Board of Directors thus referred the question of site selection to Calvert Vaux, one of the city’s most eminent landscape architects since his first collaboration with Frederick Law Olmsted in Cent

The Power of Place: How Our Surroundings Shape Our Thoughts, Emotions, and Actions (P.S.)

Are New Yorkers and Californians so different because they live in such different settings? Why do some of us prefer the city to the country? How do urban settings increase crime? Why do we feel better after an experience in nature?
In this fascinating and enormously entertaining book, Winifred Gallagher explores the complex relationships between people and the places in which they live, love, and work. Drawing on the latest research on behavioral and environmental science, THE POWER OF PLACE examines our reactions to light, temperatiure, the seasons, and other natural phenomena, and explores the interactions between our external and internal worlds.
Gallagher's broad and dynamic definition of place includes mountaintops and the womb, Alaska's hinterlands and Manhattan's subways, and she relates these settings to everything from creativity to PMS, jet lag to tales of UFOs.
Full of complex information made totally accessible, THE POWER OF PLACE offers the latest insights into the many ways we can change our lives by changing the places we live.

There are reasons why most humans love the mountains and why the great outdoors can do so much to soothe the urban jitters. Winifred Gallagher explains the inner workings of environmental psychology in The Power of Place. Traveling from northernmost Alaska, where the need to stay indoors for so much of the year takes a heavy mental and physical toll on the locals, to the artificial canyons of Manhattan, Gallagher strips off one civilizing layer after another to reveal the human animal within us, the creature that requires open spaces and clear air to function as it should. If you ever wondered why mountaineers take the risks they do or why Michael Jackson spent all that money on a hyperbaric chamber, Gallagher has the answer.

weeds are flowers too once you get to know them - Weeds: Season

Weeds: Season Six

Weeds: Season Six

Season 6 of this highly acclaimed series turns over a new leaf when pot-selling soccer mom Nancy Botwin (Golden Globe® winner Mary- Louise Parker) tries to leave behind her illegal operations. Includes the complete Season 6 with all 13 episodes on 3 discs.

After a family member eliminates a competitor with a croquet mallet, the Weeds family hits the road again in the sixth season of the Showtime dramedy. With his relationship in tatters, Andy (Justin Kirk) joins up with Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) and the boys. On the way to Seattle, the Botwins become the Newmans, who aim to lead a non-drug dealing existence. Promises Nancy: "It's a whole new life." All the while, her husband, Esteban (Demian Bichir), is on their trail.
In the Jet City, they find work at a hotel, where they tangle with a no-nonsense manager (Mad Men's Patrick Fischler) and a sadistic chef (Fargo's Peter Stormare). Soon, Nancy soon adds "herbal relaxation therapy" to the maid service she provides (Linda Hamilton plays her supplier), Silas (Hunter Parrish) gives college life a try, and babysitter Shane (Alexander Gould) falls in with a trio of soccer moms. (The show re-creates Washington in California.) After Esteban's men kidnap Doug (Kevin Nealon), they head towards the Midwest, where Nancy has a fling with a hunky bartender (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) on her way to visit a figure from her past (Richard Dreyfuss). In Michigan, Silas uncovers a family secret and one fugitive stops running.
If the year gets off to a bumpy start, Weeds finds its footing once the cast leaves Ren Mar (except for Elizabeth Perkins's Celia, who doesn't show up at all). As ever, Parker holds the scenario together by finding the likability in a character who often does unlikable things. Extras include a gag reel, three featurettes (including one in which Kirk and Nealon interview each other), and eight commentaries with cast and crew, plus guest stars Hemky Madera (Ignacio) and Enrique Castillo (Cesar), director Tate Donovan, and creator Jenji Kohan, who describes season six as "a sort of road movie." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

THIS should have been my motto when i was in middle school and high school! There were so many people that either did not like me, or never even knew i existed! i was once told that it was because i was "aloof and seemed as tho i felt superior"..........nothing could have been farther from the truth, and i was stunned. i was painfully shy.
i stayed out of the limelight and drama, because i was so shy and quiet. i kept to myself and spent most of my time reading or doing my artwork....in retrospect, i was not unhappy.....just puzzled why people would treat me that way without attempting to get to know me. Because of how i was treated and perceived, i have always tried to befriend the quiet and shy kids at school....just to let them know that i see them, and i appreciate them for who they are. They are flowers too....perhaps in a paler shade of pink or purple, just like i was...and i want them to know that they are valued for who they are, no matter what. Being valued is an important thing....if by no one else, than by yourself....

Even my good friends find it hard to believe that i was THAT shy.....and often tell me so.....but it is the truth. i did not begin to shed my shyness until after i had my kids....and suddenly the world seemed to be less threatening and more fun to me. Believe it or not i am still very shy in new situations and only really open up after i begin to feel a comfort with the situation and those in it. Suffice it to say i do not do well in a big room full of strangers....Humor is my coping mechanism and these days i am really only serious when i need to be.... life is much too short not to have fun! (i do tend to laugh sometimes when i absolutely should be VERY serious....but, i attribute that to an overactive humor gene, and it usually involves children’s antics that should be nipped in the bud!) i do LOVE to laugh.

Soooo, as you go through your HAPPY BOKEH WEDNESDAY/ HAPPY HUMP DAY, remember to be nice to all the weeds out there! Make one of them LOL!! :D

Weeds: Season One

In order to care for her children and maintain her standard of living, a young woman becomes her wealthy neighborhood's pot dealer after her husband's sudden death.
Genre: Television
Rating: NR
Release Date: 9-JAN-2007
Media Type: DVD

With its fantastic comedy series Weeds, cable network Showtime finally gave up its also-ran status to HBO and found itself with a controversial, buzz-worthy show that was as hilarious as it was dark, one about a truly desperate housewife. A recent widow with two growing sons, Nancy Botwin (Golden Globe winner Mary-Louise Parker) looks like a typical resident of the affluent Southern California suburb of Agrestic. She keeps a clean, upscale house (with the help of a live-in maid), attends PTA meetings, goes to her kids' soccer games, makes frequent stops at the local coffee franchise.... and sells marijuana in order to make it all possible. Left with no way to support herself after her beloved husband's fatal heart attack, Nancy turns herself into the "suburban baroness of bud," dealing to her neighbors in the area, with the help of her supplier Heylia (Tonye Patano) and point man Conrad (Romany Malco). Nancy's clients run from the local councilman (Kevin Nealon) to the just-barely-legal students at the local community college, but many in Agrestic are still in the dark as to how she keeps her family afloat, including her best friend, the sardonic Celia (Elizabeth Perkins), a wife and mother whose blistering, withering put-downs could make Dorothy Parker cringe in fear. But like many small-business owners, Nancy yearns for more success and cash, and like her workaholic neighbors, finds keeping a balance between work life and home life to be extremely precarious at best.
While Desperate Housewives yearned to be a suburban satire with bite, Weeds was the real deal, skewering upper-middle class mores with a sharp eye, a keen wit, and a mostly forgiving heart. In episode after episode, the show's creative team (led by creator Jenji Kohan) pulled back the layers of Agrestic's superficiality to show what lies beneath the squeaky-clean exteriors and smiling faces; it turns out that hunger, fear, desire, and, yes, desperation aren't that far down. However, Weeds forsakes pulpiness and florid drama for biting yet affectionate humor--its heroine is a woman with sliding morals, but one you'll root for to the very end. The effervescent Parker, the only actress who can mix perkiness with morbidity in just the right amounts, anchored the show with her amazing turn as Nancy, who by the end of the first season had become a kind of soccer-mom version of Michael Corleone, entering a corrupt world with both trepidation and fascination--and totally enamored of the power it brought her. Also perfectly cast, Perkins found the role of a lifetime as the bitterly hilarious Celia, and entering the show in its fourth episode, Justin Kirk (Parker's co-star in Angels in America) proved to be a potent secret weapon as Nancy's brother-in-law Andy, a slacker who wasn't above peddling t-shirts to elementary school kids. As icky as these characters might appear on the surface, Weeds made them all immensely appealing and great company to be around. Don't say we didn't warn you: one hit and you'll be hooked on this show. The DVDs feature six episode commentaries with cast and crew, outtakes, original featurettes, a music video, and most enjoyably, Agrestic Herbal Recipes (for entertainment value only, we assume) and the "Smoke and Mirrors" marijuana mockumentary. --Mark Englehart

The White Rose: Munich, 1942-1943

The White Rose tells the story of Hans Scholl and Sophie Scholl, who in 1942 led a small underground organization of German students and professors to oppose the atrocities committed by Hitler and the Nazi Party. They named their group the White Rose, and they distributed leaflets denouncing the Nazi regime. Sophie, Hans, and a third student were caught and executed.

Written by Inge Scholl (Han's and Sophie's sister), The White Rose features letters, diary excerpts, photographs of Hans and Sophie, transcriptions of the leaflets, and accounts of the trial and execution. This is a gripping account of courage and morality.
