ormai vuoto

Come legno
scoloro
e conto i solchi aumentare
tra viso e vita

e materia
e si restringe sotto colpi
di giorni sempre uguali
ma non ti abitui, no

quando dissolve altra certezza
attendi ancora
nell'immagine che sfuoca
un aiuto

che solo il cuore
ormai vuoto
non osa sperare.

now empty
(my translation is only a faint attempt to render in English an Italian born text)

As wood
I'm fading
and counting the grooves increase
between face and life

is matter
and contracts under blows
of always the same days
but you won't get used, no

when other certainty dissolves
you're still waiting
in the image that blurs
for an aid

that only this heart
now empty
not dare hope.

Tree on Lawrence Field

Tree on Lawrence Field

I am still experimenting with lensless images. This was made during a workshop on Lawrence Field in Derbyshire.

The effect you get with a pinhole adaptor on a DSLR gives a specific effect. This is different in feel to pinhole images made on film and won't be to many peoples taste, but I like it.

The downside is dust. If you think you have a clean sensor, try shooting at f138 with a pinhole 'lens'. The dust is staggering and takes an age to remove.

The images has a softness and a feel of having been taken a hundred years ago. You have no ability to focus, you can only control your ISO and shutter speed. It is rare, unless you go to high ISO's to get a shutter speed of less than 1 second and this image was a 2 second shot so if you want any degree of 'sharpness' you do need to use a tripod. For more creative 'blur' or 'ICM' type images you can handhold in bright light with no ND filters and still get plenty of movement in the image.

I have been amazed by Steve Goslings images made with lensless cameras and have made the decision to invest in a pinhole film camera to experiment myself.

As a dedicated digital user, it feels weird to be considering film. Worrying too, due to the costs. Having been so used to getting instant feedback from the histogram on a digital camera, to now face having to use a handheld lightmeter properly, bracket shots and then send the film off for processing and scanning, I am daunted to say the least.

But now I have made the decision, it has prompted me to consider taking this further. I guess this is a case of making a commitment. Now I have mentally crossed the line and decided to make the leap into film, I have decided to also try a medium format camera.

Like many others, Michael Kenna is one of my favorite photographers. He works much of the time on 6 x 6cm film. I love square format images and so have decided to try and get hold of an ancient Hassleblad film camera and one lens, if the price is right, to learn how to use it.

Of course, I will still be working digitally and adding this film work to my portfolio. I am in complete ignorance when it comes to working in film. My experience only goes as far as having used various film cameras up to my teens which just involved a lot of guess work with settings followed by posting a roll off to Bonusprint and being disappointed on the films return! I am going to have to get studying and practising.

So, if I can get hold of the cameras I need I will blog away on my exploits, failures, triumphs and lessons learned over the coming months.

You never know, it may even lead me to stepping up to large format photography at some point.

My first paid shot (203/365)

My first paid shot (203/365)

A goal I set at the beginning of the year was to make sure I had at least one shot published and paid for, it was sort of the step where you know you're doing something right. Anyway, story is, I got approached during a gig and they asked for my contact details which I happily supplied them with my moo card, the next day I was contacted by the folks at NME telling me they want my photo for their next issue. The process was quick and I was squee'ing most of the time, of course I didn't say anything just in case things didn't go through but it's published and here's my cheque, so yeah! It feels nice to not only get paid for a shot, but to have it published on a major magazine as the main live gig feature.

So yeah, will probably invest this in a new flash gun, though I already spent ?31 on a pretty darn good haircut, now I'm 70% lighter with all that hair out of the way.

Creativity
My life of creativity has lived with the difference between control and chaos; discipline and spontainity; and, planned and improvisation. In art, architecture, interior decoration, hanging drapes, disc jockeying, puppeteering, drafting and sketching I have always walked a tightrope but was at my best when I was loose, improvised, sketch and sing my way through. Even my drafting precision is best when left to my whim and whiles of intuition and spontaneity. I can work for many hours continuously and without eating or sleeping. As my art, design and writing is best when I write and not pre-plan nor compose but let God’s spirit guide. When I prepare sermons I plan, compose and make notes. I mark the bible with sticky backs at every page. But, when I preach it all goes away and I am led by the Holy Spirit to preach God’s word based on the research and prayer that has gone before. I pour my heart out in art, design, writing, conversation, and management. It is all the same creativity to me. Even public speaking and managing meetings. It is all-intuitive. I love gypsy and jazz music because it best reflects my spirit. I love open and creative mnemonic conversation, rhetoric, and singing words to make up melodies given from intuition. Rapp, Calypso, street gypsy, folk, and classic chant are like this. I can do this easily. In a Puerto Rico club a performer stood and took any sestion given by the audience and immediately composed song and rhyme to perform. This is what I can do and to me it is the ultimate in creativity. It is also so tuned into mind and utterances given by God and keeps one’s ego out of the way. I take pleasure in the creative process and enjoy its seconds, moments, hours, and days. At Yale we discussed this issue and I came down strong ON process to which Professor Charles brewer and the class agreed I was abnormal. My products were so prolific and imaginative they could not conceive these done in an unplanned disciplined was and especially not appreciating the process rather than the product. I love the process and the moments I am living within my creation while creating the creation. When it ends I am now separated from it and it has its own life. Others may now possess and experience the creation. Perhaps they may enjoy and relive what I did to create the product. I have enjoyed other creations by other creators who I sensed created in this way but it is very rare. Most that I have known who do create do not have this experience. It is where I live and where I understand craft.

When I went to Saudi I knew how to deal with harshness from USA led Arabs. TCN (third country nationals) were tricky. My work ethic and morality was always surprising and disarming. Having labored in menial jobs for tips and crumbs I knew where they were comming from.

In ''Toward a Sociological Theory of Income Differences'' Mark Granovetter says that socioeconomic background affects mental ability; background and ability affect educational attainment; background, ability, and education affect occupational achievement; and all of the preceding variables affect earnings. This particularly resonates with my own experience. God has used these phenomena to His purposes, to win souls and bring comfort to the lost and suffering. God and His will did not guide by a concept, family or father but my career.

Labor is infinitely divisible into homogeneous units, as well-behaved neoclassical commodities are supposed to be. Labor, or course, is not well behaved and comes instead in inconvenient lumps called workers.
I had to leave the class of workers and “be” the class of master, manager, leader, and source of worker’s directions.
I had to behave and beleive differently.
My parents pictured themselves as labor and victums of a system. They had no ability to affect change.
Granovetter says that it is only important to know what the individual brings to the labor market in terms of educational credentials and training, etc. to understand income differences. It is the only thing a person can do who has no other connections, leverage, capital, assets, and ownership.
I believed that I could make a difference if I were to possess these attributes of educational credentials and training.
Granovetter rightly points out that the difficulty is that whether one's investment pays off depends on whether there is demand for what one's acquired skills can produce (characteristics of available jobs) and on whether one will be in a position to help meet that demand (the matching process). And, when I graduated Pratt and Yale demand was down for my skills and profession. It wasn’t until the early nineties that demand increased for these skills. By 1993 I was fifty-six and out of range to learn computer aided design.
I applied for civil service works in the same building I applied and received my FCC forth class broadcaster’s license in about 1955. At my interview I was told that I could apply for the civil service test and af

MAXINE WATERS ANOTHER COMMUNIST LIAR, CHEAT AND THIEF (HEH HEH ALLEGED)

SHE'S BEEN CHEATIN' CALIFORNIA FOR YEARS AND A BIG OBAMA BACKER--- WHAT A SHOCK SH'ES BEING INVESTIGATED
Last week, the House ethics panel annouced that it was investigating Representative Maxine Waters (D), California. Waters allegedly helped a bank that she had ties with arrange a meeting with the Department of the Treasury officals to obtain bailout funds.

Sidney Williams who is Waters husband was on the board of directors of the OneUnited Bank of Boston and the congresswoman’s 2008 disclosure form shows that her husband has at least $350,000 in investments with the bank. Well it seems that with Rep. Waters help, the bank was able to secure a $12 million bailout. Of course that should have been easy for her, since she serves on the finacncial-services committee that oversees financial institutions. One other thing, OneUnited is among 3% of banks in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) that has missed a dividend payment to the Treasury Department.

My hat’s off to both Maxine Waters and Charlie Rangel. Rangel has tried to cheat the country by not paying his taxes and Waters has used her elected position to obtain special treatment for a bank that she has a financial interest and if anyone tries to discipline them they just have to shout “RACISM”.

Isle of Wight Island Line Class 483

Isle of Wight Island Line Class 483

Standard National Rail vehicle types cannot be used by Island Line Trains, due to the low ceiling of Ryde Tunnel.[5] Instead, services are operated using Class 483 units, which are refurbished ex-London Underground tube trains originally built in 1938. These replaced the older Class 485 and Class 486 units, which dated from 1923 and were introduced to the island in 1967 when the line was electrified.

When the Class 483 trains were introduced, they were painted in the standard Network SouthEast livery. In 2000, several years after the start of the original franchise, the stock was painted into a blue livery with large pictures of dinosaurs, aiming to entice tourists in the summer months when passenger numbers are high. Two units were later painted into London Transport colours, which the units would have had when operating on the London Underground. There are yellow warning panels on the front ends of the units, a modern feature for the benefit of track workers and a change compared with the original red. The entire fleet was repainted into this livery by the end of 2008.

Following its successful bid for the new integrated franchise, South West Trains announced that there were no plans to replace the current rolling stock, instead they would invest "to ensure the continued viability of the existing Island Line rolling stock and infrastructure".[6] By 2016, when the current franchise is due to end, the rolling stock will be almost 80 years old.

The Solent has a complex tidal system at Ryde ..the pier is half a mile long , used to have horse drawn tramway running alongside the railway and a Ballroom for the dancers.

As a cost-cutting exercise, South West Trains bought the rolling stock from the leasing company HSBC Rail in March 2007.[7] This means the leasing costs, which were reimbursed by the government, are now eliminated, thereby lowering the line's tax burden.

I used to use other types of toothpaste. Then I began to feel some pain in my teeth. I told my dentist, and he told me to use Sensodyne. He said that it could be caused by the whitening agents in the other toothpaste. I wish my teeth were white, but I don't like pain. I have 2 options. When I take a photo of myself, go to Picnik and use the "whitening" tool and/or ask the dentist to give me "whitening treatments." Don't tell me to buy those strips and put them on my teeth. I bought them, but I've not used them.

Beyond the Crisis: Shared Prosperity and Future of Progressive Politics

Monday, December 13, 5:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M.

Progressive politics succeeds best when it offers citizens an optimistic vision for their future, one based on the values of freedom, opportunity and fairness. Today, we are confronted by the most profound economic crisis in decades, fear and anxiety are on the rise and a politics of pessimism is taking hold. To counter the conservative politics of austerity and pain, progressive must define and defend an innovative and forward looking economic agenda that combines fiscal responsibility with investment in our citizens and the industries of the future.

Renewing a progressive agenda that sparks job growth and engenders a resurgence and expansion of the middle-class has become an urgent priority.
How can progressive successes of the past shed light on the challenges of today, and help a new generation of progressive leaders build a more hopeful economic agenda? Are progressive principles still the most appropriate ones for today’s challenges? How should they be applied to today’s challenges?

12-14 West 130th Street Houses

12-14 West 130th Street Houses

West 130th Street, Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The group of buildings known as Astor Row is comprised of 28 houses, effectively grouped in pairs, extending along most of the south side of 130th Street between Fifth ,Avenue and Lenox Avenue. They were bull t as a speculative development in the 1800s at a time when William Astor owned this land. Their architectural details are unusual for their place and time and their coherent style sets them apart from other remaining 19th-century rowhouses In the Harlem area. As a group, they create a pleasant streetfront, recalling a period when Harlem was changing from a country town to an urbanized area.

Practically all the houses that stand in Harlem today were built in the period beginning in the 1870s through the first decade of the 20th century. Exclusive homes such as those on Striver's Row in the St. Nicholas Historic District, helped establish Harlem as a center of fashion and elegance. The area also boasted rows of more modest brownstones, the popular Polo Grounds, and the distinguished Harlem Opera House. Some speculators made tremendous profits by Buying and re-selling land.

Prices increased so dramatically that one old-timer complained In 1839, ''When I see the prices real estate Is now bringing In Harlem, It makes me feel that I was a fool for not making investments years ago when property was so cheap." One canny Investor was John Jacob Astor. Adhering to his own principles of buying land In outlying areas of New York on the certain conviction that the city would eventually grow to meet them, he hea purchased a number of lots In Harlem at an auction in 1844.

Astor's creed was to pay less than premium price because the land was uninhabited or farmland. lie was content to hold onto his lots for long periods, allowing them to remain empty until someone came along who was Interested In Improving them.

The block of West 130th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues was purchased by Astor In 1844 for $10,000. When Astor died in 1848, the block passed with the rest of his estate to his son William Backhouse Astor. William B. Astor's holdings were In turn bequeathed in 1375 to his sons John Jacob Astor III and William Astor.

These two created a partition agreement in 1878, dividing the Inherl.ted real estate between themselves. On this block In Harlem, John Jacob Astor III received the southern half of the block which faces 129th Street (Jots 1-36), while William Astor held title to the northern half, facing 130th Street (lots 37-12). Astor Row was constructed on part of this latter section in the early 1880s, during the tremendous Harlem building boom. In 189), as part of William Astor's will, the houses were divided among his grandchildren, Mary, James and Sarah Van Alen. They maintained ownership until the second and third decade of the 20th century. During their ownership these were single family dwellings, housing middle-and upper-middle-class whites. "people of taste and wealth") from downtown Manhattan.

In 1920, the houses were described by a New York Times reporter "as one of the most attractive and exclusive home centres" in Harlem, presenting "a picture of domestic tranquility and comfort which few other blocks in the city possess." Sarah Van Alen was the first of the Astor Row land holders to sell, divesting herself of nos. 42-62 (lots 59-103) in 1912. The rest of Astor Row was held by Mary and James Van Alen until 1920 and 1921, respectively. An all-white enclave until that time, Astor Row was described in Claude Clay's novel, Home to Harlem (New York, 1928) as "the block beautiful." By the time these lots were sold, Harlem was predominately populated by African-Americans. During the next ten years, Harlem changed from a promising black community to a deplorable slum. A tremendous need for housing due to the influx of blacks from the South and from the West Indies, as well as exorbitant rents for the living spaces that existed led to the subdIvision of houses like those on Astor Row.

Although built for single families, within a short time they were carved up into boarding houses and single-room- ,. occupancy dwellings. Their ownership changed often during these years, as did the tenants and the modifications to the interiors. These buildings on Astor Row provide an excellent study in the development and change of the community of Harlem. Today, most of these buildings remain divided into single room or small apartments. The only exception is no. 62 which is owned by and serves the Pentecostal Faith Church.

The 28 buildings of Astor Row were constructed in three groups.

Nos. 8-22 were built first, in 1880-1881, the architect was Charles Buek.

The second group of houses, nos. 24-30, was built in 1882-1883, while the final section, nos. 40-62, was erected later in 1883. The design of the last twenty houses, created without benefit of an architect, was almost identi

Philip and Carrie Lehman House 7 West 54th Street House

Philip and Carrie Lehman House 7 West 54th Street House

This elegant residence was built in 1899-1900 for Philip Lehman, a prominent New York banker. Designed int the French Beaux- Arts style by architect John H. Duncan, it is a distinguished example of the fashionable town houses that once characterized the West Fifties between Fifth and Sixth Avenues and is one of an ensemble of five town houses on West 54th Street.

Midtown Manhattan remained open farmland until the first half of the 19th century when shanty towns, rubbish dumps, stockyards, and factories began to appear above West 40th Street. The landscaping of Central Park, commenced in 1857, helped spur the development of Midtown, and during the building boom that followed the Civil War, the West Forties and Fifties became lined with brick and stone residences. These new houses ranged from lavish Fifth Avenue mansions commissioned by such individual clients as the Vanderbilts to middle-class dwellings erected on a speculative basis.

The house at 7 West 54th Street occupies part of the original site of St. Luke's Hospital (1858) which fronted on West 55th Street at the southwest corner of Fifth. Avenue. The hospital dominated the east end of the block until new quarters were erected on Amsterdam Avenue at 113th Street in 1896. That same year, construction began on the University Club, designed by the firm of McKim, Mead & White and located on the northwest corner of West 54th Street and Fifth Avenue. During the next few years, several fashionable residences were constructed on the north side of West 54th Street.

Together with the University Club, a designated New York City Landmark, they typify the fine turn-of-the-century residences and private clubs that transformed the Fifties near Fifth Avenue and Fifth Avenue itself into an exclusive neighborhood— part of the continuing northward residential trend in Manhattan. Many of the buildings were designed by New York's leading architects for the city's most affluent and prominent citizens, such as Philip Lehman.

Philip Lehman (1861-1947), the cousin of New York Governor Herbert H. Lehman, was the son of Emanuel Lehman, a founder of Lehman Brothers. This successful firm began in the 1850s as a cotton brokerage and developed after the Civil War into one of the world's leading investment banking houses. Philip Lehman became a partner in the firm in 1887. He served as first chairman of the board of directors from 1929 to 1941 and was also a director of the F.W. Woolworth Company from 1912 to 1947.

Philip Lehman is perhaps best known, however, for his fabulous private art collection, enlarged after his death by his son Robert.

Philip Lehman commission his splendid Beaux-Arts style town-house from the architect John H. Duncan in 1899. Duncan (1855-1929) was well known as the designer of two of New York's most imposing monuments, the General Grant National Memorial (1891-97) in Manhattan and the Soldiers and Sailors' Memorial Arch (1892) on Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, both designated New York City Landmarks. In both cases his designs were chosen in competition with many others and his success must have helped Duncan establish a clientele of notable New Yorkers for his residential and commercial work.

The architect designed many fine residences in New York, often using the neo-French Classical style; examples of his work may be seen at 8-10 West 76th Street in the Central Park West-76th Street Historic district and at 11 East 70th Street, a designated New York City Landmark. In designing the Lehman residence, Duncan was able to show his adeptness in the Beaux-Arts style.

The handsome exterior of the Lehman residence is faced with rusticated limestone that provides a background for a profusion of luxuriant relief carving. The four-and-one-half story, two-bay residence is symmetrically massed and distinguished by an elaborately designed two-story mansard roof.

A central front entrance is located at ground floor level, approached by a low stoop. The arched entry frames double glass doors and is flanked by a pair of windows crisply recessed into the facade and ornamented with decorative iron grilles. Ornate console brackets with carved garlands and fruit appear above the windows and entrance, supporting a bowed balcony at second story level. The balcony fronts two pairs of French windows that are crowned by richly carved, extremely ornate cartouches.

Double-hung windows with eared architraves and fronted by decorative iron balcony grilles light the third story. The third story is crowned by an impressive cornice designed with heavy console brackets and foliate ornament that marks the beginning of the steep, slate mansard roof. Two dormer windows with egg-and-dart moldings and heavy crowning cartouches, pierce the roof at fourth-story level, while the attic above is lit by three oval lucames, also surmounted by copper foliate cartouches.

Even the limestone roof coping bears carved foliate detailing, and it terminates in console brackets. The original d
