The Pssst! Tab

I found this Pssst! tab in the Options menu of Service Pack 4.1. That "Fix all PC problems" checkbox works like a charm, but a few other settings -- usually reserved for system administrators only -- are particularly tempting.

I made a short screencast tutorial for the staff at work today but wanted to at least share this image with all of you.

This Old Guitar

This Old Guitar

This old guitar taught me to sing a love song
it showed me how to laugh and how to cry.
It introduced me to some friends of mine
and brightened up some days
and helped me make it through some lonely nights. Oh
What a friend to have on a cold and lonely night

This old guitar gave me my lovely lady
it opened up her eyes and ears to me
it brought us close together
and I guess it broke her heart
it opened up the space for us to be
What a lovely place and a lovely space to be.

This old guitar gave me my life my living
all the things you know I love to do
to serenade the stars that shine
from a sunny mountainside
and most of all to sing my songs for you
I love to sing my songs for you.
Yes I do, you know
I love to sing my songs for you

jim unnamed pub dingle musicians

jim unnamed pub dingle musicians

A couple Irish musicians I met in a Dingle pub with no name (if I remember correctly). I'd never have known of it, but an older guy (60-70ish?) named Dan that I was chatting with in the rain outside the crowded "Dingle Pub" (a nice but touristy place with traditional music) said he'd take me up to a pub with music if I'd share my umbrella, so of course I did, and these guys were the best musicians I saw in Ireland :-). Thanks Dan!

The musicians (whose names I never got I don't think) were really good and were improvising on various Irish themes. At least one of the tunes they played was written by the accordian player (and it was a great tune, cool chords as played by the guitar player; it was almost like jazz). They look like they may be brothers now that I look at the picture but that didn't occur to me at the time. The guitar player was especially nice and we talked about gigs, guitars and music and such. He was using an Octaver on his guitar to sort of play bass and guitar simultaneously. He had a great right hand; an excellent rhythm player. He also said he played bodhran, which might explain why he was such a great rhythm player, the technique for bodhran (as shown to me by an artisan/musician I bought my bodhran from later in the trip) is somewhat similar to strumming a guitar. He told me that they needed a percussionist so I clapped along as best I could (in my attempt at the the style of a bodhran player) and it seemed he thought I was doing OK (for an American no doubt LOL) since he was smiling and nodding at me while we played.

The guitar player also helped me out when I had left the pub to go to the after hours disco and forgot my Guinness Storehouse souvenir umbrella in the pub. I went back for it and the pub had closed, but fortunately for me the guitar player was still outside in his car and saw me and jumped out of his car and got me back into the pub to get my umbrella saying he'd noticed I'd left it when I walked out. I thanked him profusely for helping me out and he simply said "Us musicians have to stick together." Slainte!

The history of Marshall Amplifiers has become a source of great fascination and interest over three decades. In 30 years of manufacturing we have made a vast number of different models using many materials and techniques. People like Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend of the Who, Tony Iommi, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore are just a few of the many Marshall Amps users.

Documentation from those Marshall amps early years is virtually non-existent. The pressure to build amplifiers was so great that detailed record keeping was impossible. This pressure also created anomalies in the products themselves as component and minor cosmetic changes could be phased in at any time where supplies ran out but production had to continue. The following information is a rough guide to the major changes in the most popular Marshall models since 1962.

Jim Marshall made his first amp back in 62 in order for the bass guitarists to be as loud as the drummer. This was mainly for Rock music and musicians as the drummers simply played louder than that of say a jazz drummer. In fact Jim was a drummer and I'm sure he wanted to be able to hear what they were playing. He had a music store in England and sold Fender amps. His favorite was the 59' Bassman (which is actually a great sounding guitar amp). The problem as Jim found it was these amps where too expensive.

He decided to make them as inexpensive as possible by limiting the 'features'. This ended up being an amp with a single speaker impedance, and very similar controls as found on the Bassman. The JTM45 was the first Marshall amp. It had 25 watts of power and a different sound than that of the Fender Bassman mainly because different output tubes where used, the KT66. It had a softer sound than that of the Bassman. Later the KT66 was replaced with the EL34 which further changed the sound of Marshalls. By adopting the EL34 meant different output transformers where used.

In the beginning Marshall Amps a number of amps where designed, each to be used for a different purpose: PA (Public Address), Organ, Bass and Guitar. The JTM 45 was often used with two column type speaker cabinets for PA systems. Later when the 100 watt Marshalls where developed, many variations of the amp were used for particular purposes. The PA versions had an extra 12AX7 to allow for extra input channels. They also added two more output tubes (EL34) and larger output transformers. The early Marshall amps didn't yet have a Master Volume control. For the bass amps usually the only difference was an added capacitor placed on one of the inputs that would filter out some of the high frequencies. It was the Bluesbreaker amp or Model 1962 combo amp which really put Marshall on the map. This amp was used by Eric Clapton in the legendary John Mayall Bluesbreakers.

The master volume actually came into being around 1975. With a master volume control you could overdrive the preamp tubes to get a more distorted sound without blowing down the walls. The sound wasn't like Eddie Van Halen but more of a bluesy fuzz sound. The only way to get a great distorted guitar tone was to turn up the amp to overdrive the output tubes and speakers. Celestion Speakers where used in most of these amps. They would of course vary depending upon the type of application. The Guitar amps use them in a number of different configurations, ie. 2 x 12" open backed cabinet to 8 x 12" speakers in a closed back cabinet.

Bought the LP 18.4.1968 24 mk

This was my 4th jazz LP, bought it in 1968, and it was just because of the guitar.
There wasn't many jazz guitarists at that time:
Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Herb Ellis and Barnie Kessel.

The playing technique of Byrd is a bit different form the other jazz guitarists. He played with his fingertips - the classical style and the sound of the guitar wasn't the sound of electric guitar.

Charlie Byrd (1925-1999) had success in the early 60's when he was on the Bossa Nova wave, when it was discovered by the American jazz musicians, specially Stan Getz who recorded the million seller album Jazz Samba (1963) and later
Getz - Guilberto (which I bouth later the same year).
Today this sounds very main stream entertainment, not jazz at all.

There's one interesting name in the list of the musicians: Teo Macero is playing saxophone! - He was the producer who worked with Miles Davis in Columbia in the 60's and 70's. Unfortunately he doesn't play any solo here, It would have been very interesting to hear him play something.

I know it's a cheap effect, but I like the picture. And without this cheap effect, it looked like crap. I took this picture last year during First Thursday in my neighborhood, then totally forgot about it.

"Mama's got a squeeze box
She wears on her chest
And when Daddy comes home

'Cause she's playing all night
And the music's all right

The Man Who Played God

The Man Who Played God

George Arliss turns to another old favorite in his latest picture, "The Man Who Played God," which was offered last night at the Warner Theatre before an enthusiastic audience. It is a charmingly poetic idea that has received tasteful and reverend attention from John Adolfi the director. Mr. Arliss delivers another of-his effective and meticulous portrayals as a celebrated pianist named Montgomery Royale, who is afflicted with deafness and subsequently finds joy in eavesdropping on distressed souls in Central Park by reading their lips through powerful field glasses as they talk to each other.

It is a neatly conceived story as it comes to the screen, with effervescent cheer in the introductory sequences, then a period of melancholy, and finally episodes of thankfulness and happiness. It was no wonder that this first night audience, after watching and listening in silence throughout the production, were stirred to applaud as Royale sat at a church organ and played "Onward Christian Soldiers."

This beguiling tale was written years ago by Gouverneur Morris and it was dramatized by Jules Eckert Goodman. A good deal has been added to it in transforming it into a film and while it seems a little lethargic at times, it has such a genuinely gentle and appealing touch that one would not wish it to be told any faster.

There are the glimpses of Paris, with Mr. Royale suffering from too much adulation from those who enjoy his piano playing. Grace, a young girl, is infatuated with this elderly musician and she watches his nimble fingers through her field glass as he plays. He discourages Grace from loving him, but she worships music and therefore adores this master of the piano.

In a beautifully staged series of scenes Royale is beheld ready to play before a kingowhich king is not stated. This monarch is delayed, and Royale decides that the concert must start. He plays and receives an ovation, and after the concert is over and Royale is holding a reception in a private room, in comes the king. He had been held up by a breakdown of his automobile. Through dark shadows one appreciates that something alarming is going to happen, and immediately after Royale sits at the piano to play especially for the king a bomb is thrown through the window of the room. Apparently nobody is hurt, but the shock of the explosion destroys the musician's hearing. He is dumfounded by the sudden stillness and there is an affecting glimpse when, after a valiant attempt to play again, he arises from the piano and realizes that he is deaf.

The once jolly Royale becomes sour and gloomy. He will not play another note and he returns to New York filled with bitterness against God. He countermands the order for an organ he was going to give to a church in memory of his mother and he smashes a violin. He even thinks of suicide, but he is stayed from this by his faithful servant, Battle, acted by Ivan Simpson. Royale keeps to his apartment, but one day an expert on lip-reading comes to him and the pianist turns out to be an apt pupil. As soon as Royale learns to understand what persons are saying he becomes more cheerful and then one day he chances to observe Grace's field glasses on a window seat.

He looks down into Central Park and reads the lips of a young man who has been told that he has consumption and must go away. The girl with him is willing to sell herself to her employer to raise the money to help cure the man she loves. Royale hurries Battle out after the couple, and just after they have finished praying Royale's servant appears with an envelope and they read the note it contains. It asks for their address so that the writer can send the money needed to make them happy.

Royale mocks God even at this stage, saying that he is himself answering their prayers. But subsequent events change his demeanor. He does not confine himself to aiding grown-ups, but also sends toys to poor little children, and during one scene Royale and Battle are perceived having a rollicking time while trying out and packing the presents.

Besides Mr. Arliss's masterful acting, there is an excellent performance by Violet Heming, who appears as Royale's sincere and sympathetic friend. Bette Davis, who plays Grace, often speaks too rapidly for the microphone. Mr. Simpson and Louise Closser Hale do splendidly in their respective roles.

It was a pity that the print screened last night was often extremely noisy in the first stages. The undertones sounded as though a thunderstorm were going on in the distance.

The Abrams Brothers 02

The Abrams Brothers 02

Fourth-generation musicians with musical roots reaching back to their great-grandparents, The Abrams Brothers grew up playing music in an atmosphere where generation-spanning family musical collaborations are practically tradition. Comprised of John (vocals, guitar), James (vocals, fiddle), and cousin Elijah (bass), this young, Ontario-based Americana/Bluegrass band pairs a rich musical background with a youthful exuberance. Live performance veterans dating back to the ages of 11 and 9, The Abrams Brothers show is augmented by banjo and drums.

Though young, the band has already racked up some impressive credits, including being the youngest Canadians to appear on Nashville’s iconic Grand Ole Opry in 2005. The Abrams Brothers has performed overseas, touring Europe in 2006 and playing the European World of Bluegrass Festival, as well as performing at the 2007 and 2008 Jacob’s Ladder Folk Festival in Israel.

In 2005, the group was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the Canadian Bluegrass Music Awards, and in 2006, it received the Daniel Pearl Memorial violin, given to especially gifted young musicians. The band has been featured in publications like Bluegrass Unlimited, Bluegrass Now and Maverick Magazine and has appeared on CBC Radio, PBS Virginia and CKWS Television.

In 2008 The Abrams Brothers recorded Blue on Brown, a tribute to folk legends Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie. The album of bluegrass and gospel covers features an all-star cast of Canadian artists such as Bruce Cockburn and Amy Milan (Broken Social Scene) and demonstrates the groups deft musicianship as they keep up with Dylan and Guthrie’s fast rhythms and intricate guitar finger-work. They even got the nod of approval from Arlo Guthrie himself when the man heard them playing his songs and said, “these guys are way too young to be that good.”

The Abrams Brothers were recently featured on the Canadian national TV show CBC “The National” and also appeared on the renowned radio show Acoustic Cafe. Look for them on CMT with a new video for “Mermaid Town,” the first single off their new album Northern Redemption.

Day 278/365 - Jump For Joy

Day 278/365 - Jump For Joy

[3:01pm]

Well.. I got up this morning to Callie and Jones trying to sneak into my room to put shaving cream on my hands and then tickle me face with a feather. So I waited until they got within a few feet of the bed, now remember they thought I was still asleep, and jumped up and yelled. It scared the crap out of them and they ran downstairs as fast as they possibly could.

I thought it was pretty funny personally.

Anyway then I got up and went to guitar, which was alot of fun. We had an hour lesson today which at first I thought was gonna kill my fingers but I'm starting to get used to playing for long periods of time. We're doing christmas music which is pretty cool. I'm not a huge fan of it but Louie's making it fun. I'm getting good at it to. It's kinda odd really that some people have been in the group for upwards of 6 years and their still in the intermediate group, I was in the group for a month and a half before I got moved up to the Advanced group. And 7 months into it Louie has started giving me and one other girl private lessons learning how to fingerpick , something that I absolutly love. And all of this is with very little prior knowledge of the guitar. I guess I just catch on quick...

Anyway, after guitar we picked up Peanut (Brisson) and headed home. I found out that some of my stuff was missing, courtesy of Jones and Callie (My mouse and the cable that runs between my keyboard and my amp). So I promptly stole a few of her things, including her lifesized free standing cardboard poster of Orlando Bloom and her prized iPod Touch. Needless to say she wasn't too pleased about all of that.

Anyway after all of the theiving took place Mom took us all out to lunch at Sharkey's. The food wasn't nearly as good as the conversation. I finally manage to get Callie, Peanut and Jones to start complaining about some of the people in her class, namely McKayla and Nicole, A.K.A Porkchop and Ugly. It was pretty funny actually.

When we got home we all managed to get mad at each other while we sorted out the whole "Who stole what" situation. I got all of my stuff back, Simply by threatening to mess up her iPod. Which of course I wouldn't do but she didn't know that.

I talked to sarah a little, well ok not a little, more like a few hours with before I went down stairs and did a bit of filming with my Canon Xh A1. I havent used it in a while so I figured I'd break it out and do a little work with it.

Well I ended up filming a bunch of stuff for Callie and the rest of them. It was really funny actually. I may actually post it all up on Youtube but I doubt I'll get around to it. Who knows.

Anyway so now i'm talking to sarah again and doing a bit of photoshopping.

God I never stop doing those two things. I need a life.

Giant Guitar Neck

Giant Guitar Neck

Each year as night falls on Christmas Eve in Woodstock, New York, much of the town gathers on and around the village green to await the arrival of Santa Claus. The time of his arrival is known (5:30 p.m.); what is a secret is the manner of his arrival. He has arrived by elephant, on top of a giant Frosty the Snowman, out of the sky, and by numerous other means over the years. People sing Christmas carols as they await his arrival, and stop into the nearby shops that provide free refreshments for this event.

For Christmas 2005, as a nod to Woodstock’s reputation as a haven of peace and music (though the Woodstock concert was actually located nearly an hour’s drive away), Santa arrived on the back of a giant dove that dangled from a purple crane that had been parked at the edge of the green (and had provided the only clue as to Santa’s possible means of arrival—though I had told my six-year-old nephew that perhaps it had nothing to do with Santa at all, that maybe a purple construction company had come to town, and it would henceforth build only purple buildings…). The dove set him down on the neck of an enormous mock-up of a peace-symbol-emblazoned guitar; he had brought his own guitar, and jammed (Hendrix I think, and some other song that evoked the Woodstock era), then descended to hand out goodies to the kids, along with his team of elves and reindeer. The giant guitar and dove remained on the green for a couple of days, until they were hauled away.

Trumpet Sauce

Trumpet Sauce

Monkfish with Spinach and Black Trumpet Sauce
(recipe from the New York Times)
Serves 4, 45 minutes
1 1/2 pounds monkfish, approximately
1/4 pound fresh black trumpet mushrooms
1 1/2 pounds fresh spinach, tough stems removed
3 Tbsp. butter
1 shallot, minced
1/4 cup Scotch
1/2 cup heavy cream
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 Tbsp. olive oil

Trim purplish membrane off fish. Cut crosswise into fillets about 1/2 inch thick. Set aside. Plunge mushrooms into cold water to remove any grit. Drain well, then squeeze dry in paper towels. Cut large mushrooms in half lengthwise. Wash spinach in several changes of cold water to remove all grit. Transfer to a colander but do not dry.
Melt butter in a large saute pan over medium-high heat. Add shallot, and saute 1 to 2 minutes, then add mushrooms. Cook stirring often, until wilted and tender, about 10 minutes. Add Scotch and cook until reduced to a glaze; add cream and cook until it coats mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat but keep warm.
Place spinach in a large pot over medium high heat, cover and steam until wilted. Remove from heat, squeeze dry and keep warm.
In a second large saute pan, heat oil over high heat until almost smoking. Season fish on both sides with salt and pepper, and lay into hot oil. Cook 4-5 minutes on each side, until very tender. Season spinach, and divide among 4 serving plates; lay monkfish fillets over each. Spoon mushrooms and liquid over each serving (there will be just enough sauce to lightly cover fish.) Serve.

Apparently, this cool-looking glass trumpet can actually be played!

From the explanatory text:

Hunting Trumpet in F

Belgium, second half 19th century

The Crosby Brown Collection of Musical Instruments, 1889 (89.4.1116)

Blown of clear glass and decorated with spiral pinstripes of alternating blue and red, instruments of this kind were produced by glass blowers in Lodelinsart and Che?ne?e in Wallonia (southern Belgium). This instrument imitates smaller versions of brass hunting horns of the sixteenth to eighteenth century and the
tromba da caccia (hunting trumpet) used in orchestral music in the eighteenth century.
