Blind Spot
Euan told me about an incredible thing that happened as he and Martha shared a couch in a coffee shop in Glasgow's City Centre.
Two men entered the shop and approached them holding pieces of card, on which Euan assumed would be written a plea for money. But the men brought the pieces of card right up to Martha's and Euan's faces, and there were no words written on them. One was so close to his face, Euan said, that he could see nothing but card.
Euan isn't the kind of person who will accept someone infringing his comfort, but before he had a chance to even register what was going on, the men turned around and walked swiftly out of the shop. It was some minutes later before Martha noticed that her phone, which had been sitting on the table in front of them, was gone.
Astonishing for its sheer audacity, it seems that keeping something where you can see it isn't enough when thieves can stop you from seeing for even a moment.
