A Little History...
This greek-gothic victorian home was built circa 1860 and previously sat where Burke Fortin Funeral home is presently in Rockville, Connecticut. It was moved between 1890-1892 to it's present location on Orchard Street. It was home to Dwight Loomis.
Dwight Loomis (July 27, 1821 - September 17, 1903) was a United States Representative from Connecticut in 1851, a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856 as well as a member of the Connecticut Senate from 1857-1859. He was later elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1859-March 3, 1863). While in Congress, he served as chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury (Thirty-sixth Congress). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1862. After Congress, he served as judge of the Superior Court of Connecticut 1864-1875 and a Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court 1875-1891. He moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1892 and was Connecticut referee from 1892 until his death in a train accident near Waterbury, Connecticut in 1903. He is buried in Grove Hill Cemetery, in Rockville, Connecticut. (Biographical information obtained from the "Biographical Directory of the United States Congress")
The current owner of the home decorates it for every seasonal holiday.
This home has not been recognized by the Vernon Historical Society.
Ettington Park detail

Ettington Park (now a rather posh hotel) is surely one of the most splendid Victorian Gothic stately homes in the country. It may not be a particularly large building but it more than makes up for this in terms of charm and detail.
What we currently see is mostly the work of John Prichard and J.P.Seddon from 1858-62, although it is actually a remodelling of a 1641 building (though nothing of this is visible outside)
On my first visit here some years ago I was offered the chance to look around inside and got to see many of the main rooms, which are very much in the style one would expect from seeing the exterior, although the grand staircase was somewhat more neo-classical in detail.
