Log Cabin Wall Decor

Log cabin quilt "straight furrows"
This is a very traditional pattern.
The symbolism of the Log Cabin square is the red centre square represents the hearth, with half the block in the light and half in the shadows. When the blocks are put together in this diagonal way it represents a plowed field.
In the years up to the US civil war, a log cabin quilt hanging on the line outside indicated that this was a safe house for slaves escaping from the south who were heading up to Canada.
I made this about 15 years ago after collecting lots of beige, brown and green fabrics. It's all 2 inch strips, just sew on a strip, square up the edges, sew on the next one...
Log Cabin Quilt is done (piecing, at least!)
At 8:05 p.m. tonight, April 1, (No foolin'!) I finished the queen-sized Log Cabin Quilt. It is such a relief to have this done. I started it in September 08 and I am donating it to a local childrens home for their raffle. It will be quilted soon, bound and then off to Kemmerer Village. It has 72 log blocks and 9 cabin blocks and is done in civil war reproduction fabrics.
