Winter storage area for begonias
During the winter 2009/10 the outside temperature fell as low as minus 10C however these crates of begonia tubers were quite happy and are now starting to sprout....so out they come!
The tubers are stored in crates of dry compost. The plastic green house is lined with thick polystyrene sheets. Despite winter temperatures as low as minus 15C in some winters, we do not use the low wattage heater until February when, by a timer, we give gently heat for about one hour a day in order to produce new shoots on the tubers. Application of this gentle heat brings the first blooms of summer forward by about one month and therefore extends the flowering season by one month.

Volt and ammeters plus timer for Webasto (Eberspacher controller used). All the power to/from the leisure battery is routed via the ammeter. The switch between the timer and gauges energises back lighting and volt meter.
The push button at the bottom controls air circulation fans at heater matrices. They are quite noisy 120 mm fans from a server storage array connected in series (so running at about 6 volts).
