1869 Dexter Velocipede
Made by: William van Anden
Made In: Poughkeepsie, New York
This velocipede bicycle was patented by William van Anden in 1869. The Dexter was the first free-wheeling drive bicycle. It was the precursor of the coaster hub, with a ratchet-like device that allowed the cranks to remain motionless while the bicycle continued to roll. The brakes were operated by a turn of the handlebar. This pressure thus bears on the rear tire to help brake.
