The species Cucurbita pepo is a cultivated plant of the genus Cucurbita.The zucchini (or courgette) is a popularly cultivated summer squash which often grows to nearly a meter in length, but which is usually harvested at half that size or less. Along with certain other squashes, it belongs to the species Cucurbita pepo. Zucchini can be dark or light green, and generally have a similar shape to a ridged cucumber, although some round varieties are also available. In a culinary context, the zucchini is treated as a vegetable, which means it is usually cooked and presented as a savory dish or accompaniment. Botanically, however, the zucchini is an immature fruit, being the swollen ovary of the female zucchini flower.

La zucchina (Cucurbita pepo) e una specie della famiglia delle Cucurbitaceae i cui frutti sono utilizzati immaturi.Appartengono a questa specie differenti cultivar : le zucchine lunghe, le piu diffuse nei mercati europei. Il frutto e generalmente cilindrico, piu raramente piriforme. Il colore piu comune e il verde scuro, anche se esistono varieta verdi chiare, striate, e persino dalla buccia completamente bianca o gialla. Dalla pianta della zucchina si puo raccogliere anche il fiore di zucca o fiore di zucchino , dal colore giallo-arancione, molto utilizzato in campo culinario, solitamente fritto, per ricavarne piatti.
