Sea 'spider' - Pycnogonica : Ammotheidae

Sea 'spider' - Pycnogonica : Ammotheidae

Sea ‘spiders’:
Pycnogonica : Ammotheidae

Sea ‘spiders’ are not true spiders, and are called pycnogonids, and although they are all marine, usually in coastal waters, species have been found living in sea caves near Eaglehawk Neck in Tasmania. Pycnogonids are small in Tasmanian shallow waters, but grow to a leg-span of a dinner plate in deep water off Tasmania and in cold Antarctic waters. Their bodies are so small in comparison with the length of their legs that their gonads are found in leg segments next to the main part of the body. They graze on marine algae and bryozoans (lace coral).

These specimens were trawled by CSIRO off Macquarie Island by the Southern Surveyor in 2001.

Marble Point: Sea Spider

Marble Point: Sea Spider

Keri, Adam, and I got to go out to Marble Point (northwest across the Ross Sea from McMurdo) by HELICOPTER (!) to wax a bit of floor. We had to make a stop at Lake Bonney on the way, which meant a ride through the restricted Dry Valleys. SO AMAZING.

We found a few washed-up wildlife remains on the beach.
