Last night's storm

Last night's storm

A storm rolled through on 9-18-10 and dropped baseball size hail and major lightning in KCMO. This was taken at Metcalf and Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Thank you for all the nice comments! I will try to make a visit to all your photos to see your handy work.

I was asked about camera settings and thought I would share in hopes someone else can learn as I have from others.

#1 lightning can kill so be safe. What you do is your fault not mine...

I spent a few evening storms working out the best way to capure the lightning... ISO 100 (to slow the shutter speed) - f4 (My lens an 18-50 2.8 peaks sharpness at that point.) - I then adjust the shtter speed to set the exposure to about 1 2/3rd to 2 stops slow. (To adjust for the light from the lightning) - I have gone to shooting RAW only and this alows for some tweaking of the exposure. On the best shots I seem to have to go down an aditional stop to highlight the fine leader lines of the lightning. The rest is luck and timing, but we did notice there is usually a breif calm before a big strike in a very active storm. So when a storm rolls in we head for an open area outside the path of the storm set up the tripod and remote shutter and shoot away.
