View of Japanese growth from Prince Hotel, Isogo ??
A history of development: When the samurai lost their income after the Meiji Restoration, mikan (mandarin oranges) were brought from the US by Colonel Janes (the "American Samurai") to provide a livelihood and income for the samurai class who lost their feudal stipend. The trees were planted on hillsides as this didn't compete with lowland farms. The trees in the left foreground are remaining mikan. As this was a nice location overlooking a harbor, woods, and beach, the Yokohama Prince Hotel was built, leaving a few of the mikan. As the population growth put pressure on land, reclaimed land was built into the shallow areas all around Japan. The area in front is part of Shin-Isogo, or "New Isogo." Workers couldn't afford the land so crowded apartments were put up, and became known as "danchi," or rabbit hutches. They were very much in demand after WWII when housing was short. The tannish colored one dates from the 60s and the newer one in the foreground is now called a "mansion," to make it sound better. Industrial development was placed on the reclaimed land. High land prices coflict with zoning, so you have the hotel, an old orchard, apartments, and petroleum storage all in the same view. The beach and scenic harbor have disappeared.
Grand Hotel
Much like the various fancy hotels that were spread all along the beach in day gone by, the newly opened Grand Hotel in Old Orchard Beach is supposed to remind people of the glamorous days gone by. At night, the streets below are packed with tourists and locals alike, taking in the southern Maine summer. The beach I'm standing on remains totally dark in contrast to the busy commercial area.
