Dottie and Her Fawn - Shenandoah National Park

Dottie is the resident piebald whitetail deer that has lived near Skyland for years now. She likes to hang out amongst the cabins and hotel buildings, and will frequently come right up to the back window of the restaurant in the main lodge. Needless to say, she is quite indifferent to people.

Another park photographer told me he'd heard that her fawns had been killed by bears this year. So, I was thrilled to see it wasn't true. One of her fawns appears to be quite healthy and happy! The second fawn was nowhere to be seen. I just wish I hadn't clipped off the end of her tail in this shot.

Our hotel room. On the 2nd floor! I really wondered how we were going to get Mom up those stairs, but she made it. But being on the 2nd floor there was a 2nd floor balcony overlooking the valley. If we would have been on the 1st floor I wouldn't have wanted to set out there in the dark when I couldn't sleep at 3am.
