    grand hotel
  • Grand Hotel is an album by Procol Harum, released in 1973.

  • The Grand Hotel is a Victorian hotel in Brighton on the south coast of England. It is located on Kings Road, the main carriageway along the seafront; one of several major hotels along this road.

  • The Grand Hotel, at 9 Princes Street, was the leading hotel of Auckland, New Zealand, from 1889 until 1966. With its vaulted ceilings, ornate mantlepieces, red carpet and marble statuary, the Grand Hotel was a plush and social rendezvous from its opening.

  • SoHo is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan in the United States. Prior to the mid-20th century, the area was known as Hell's Hundred Acres, and was described as an "industrial wasteland", busy with sweatshops and small factories in the daytime, but empty at night.

  • A district in southern Manhattan in New York City, known for its artist-occupied industrial lofts and galleries. Its name is derived from South of Houston Street

London Lost Music Venues: Folk Music 05 - Pindar of Wakefield

London Lost Music Venues: Folk Music 05 - Pindar of Wakefield

Address: 328 Grays Inn Road, London WC1.
Dates: 1960s.
Past Use: Pub (built 1878, previous pub in site since 16th century).
Current Use: Water Rats Theatre/Pub (purchased by the Grand Order of Water Rats in 1986 and renamed afterwards. Music has been a feature of the Water Rats, programmed previously by Plum, and currently by Mondo).

Ewan MacColl fell out with Malcolm Nixon and withdrew from the Ballads and Blues Club (probably around 1959). In June 1961 he launched his own club which came to be called the Singers Club and was run by Bruce Dunnet. The club’s first venue was the ACTT building in Soho Square. The residents included Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, Dominic Behan and A.L Lloyd. Other venues which followed included the Plough in Museum Street, Prince of Wales Feathers in Warren Street, Royal Hotel in Woburn Place, the New Merlin’s Cave in Margery Street, the John Snow in Broadwick Street, the Union Tavern in Lloyd Baker Street, the Bull & Mouth in Holborn, the Princess Louise (see another photo in this set), Cora Hotel in Bloomsbury, and a Boys’ Club in Lamb’s Conduit Street. Colin Harper in his book Dazzling Stranger refers to the spell at the Pindar of Wakefield (October 1962 to September 1963) as “a particularly celebrated era“ (I’m not sure if he is referring to anything more than the Bob Dylan visit on the 22nd December 1962). Apparently every time the club moved MacColl added a new verse to a “Song of the Travels” (the information on moves is taken from the Haper book and the mudcat discussion).

The Singers Club has attracted a lot of criticism, mostly due of its music policy of wanting singers to do songs from their own country (there has been some dispute about the exact nature of the requirement). Nevertheless, I am sure that a visit to the club in its sixties heyday would have been an extremely interesting experience.

Apparently V.I. Lenin used to drink in the Pindar of Wakefielld during the time he spent in London (various dates between 1902 and 1911).

I have listened to music at this venue twice in its later Water Rats guise - the Larry Love Showband in 2004 and Laura Cantrell in 2011. The music room is now on the ground floor through the bar. The room is pretty basic (“grimy” is the most frequently used phrase in internet reviews).
