NC - McDowell County - Lake Tahoma
After over three hours of driving I realized that I would not get to Biltmore before closing. I got off westbound I-40 and drove east to the Marion exit to catch the road to Mount Mitchell. My car’s GPS followed the highway signs to Mount Mitchell until I reached a small road outside of Marion. I decided to be adventurous and follow my GPS. After driving a while on a winding mountain road I came across this scene. I was finally seeing some fall colors.
I pulled off the road in a parking area with "No Trespassing" signs about spaced apart every 20 feet. I thought it I was going to get arrested it might as well be at a pretty place.
The GPS said I was on Lake Tahoma Road. I thought this building was interesting. The gate to the boardwalk was closed, with more "No Trespassing" signs. I snapped a few quick photos and then made my escape.
The road got steeper and more winding. It's name changed to Buck Creek Road. After driving for quite a while I finally reached the Blue Ridge Parkway. I saw that the road was also SR-80.
I Goggled "Lake Tahoma" when I returned home. It is a private lake in McDowell County. This building was a casino. It has apparently been closed for years. I found a few articles, one of which stated that the interior of the building was not very impressive - just a big room. It also said that the building was too expensive to restore for some other use.
That's too bad - I thought it looked interesting. Also, I think parking in the "No Trespassing" area and shooting a few photos will be the limit of my illegal activity for the second half of 2011. I may post a few more photos if and when I feel the need to relive my law breaking adventure at Lake Tahoma.
