The United Nations in Cape Verde, through the agencies UNFPA and UN WOMEN supported the first training of trainers in gender and family, organized by the Research Centre for Gender and Family (CIGEF) from the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV) in partnership with the Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG).

The course, which ended at the beginning of March, had duration of 100 teaching hours, framed in the scope of university extension courses from Uni-CV and has benefited 30 students, six men and 24 women. With the aim of creating in Cape Verde a team of trainers engaged in the promotion of gender equality and with specific expertise on gender and family and pedagogical techniques inherent to the process of awareness and training, the course was considered an opportunity for trainees to extend their knowledge and experience in promoting gender.

This training, delivered by professionals from ICIEG and Technical University, helped to integrate the objectives of gender equality in the design across the board and development of policies and practices of the Uni-CV, according to the Rector, Dr. Antonio Correia e Silva, because "The gender approach is a crucial issue for the development of society".

In her closing speech of the course, the Coordinator of UN System in Cape Verde, Ms. Petra Lantz, stressed the system's commitment to promoting gender equity and protection of women, while remembering the path of CIGEF since it was established in 2008 and the fact that the training counts with six male participants.

For her part, the Minister of Labour, Family and Solidarity, Dr. Madalena Neves, presiding over the closing act of the courses advocated the recovery and promotion of the family by announcing the immediate passage of a law against gender-based violence (VBG).

The referred course counted with three strands - gender relations, family and pedagogical training - each of which was presented through a holistic, relational and integrative approach. These particularities refers to the need to evolve from a theoretical/ conceptual focus over the issues related to gender and family; proceed with the familiarization and analysis of international and regional instruments to promote gender and support equality and families development; as well as questioning the manifestations of gender inequalities in social and economic area, power relations both at home and in public space and the construction of sexual identity.

The Centre for Training and Research on Gender and Family was established in 2008 as an organic unit of the Uni-CV, of interdisciplinary character, with scientific investigative functions, training, extension and development in gender and family areas in partnership with ICIEG and the support from UNFPA and UNIFEM (now UN Women). The Centre has as a mission to contribute, through research, training and extension activities, for the conception, promotion and implementation of programs, projects and policy measures aimed at balanced development of gender and family relations in the social, economic, political , scientific and cultural areas.
