Shorelines Gift Shop & Pete's Bar

Shorelines Gift Shop & Pete's Bar

First St., Neptune Beach, Florida
Plastic Wrap and other heavy processing.

Pete's Bar, known as the first establishment in Duval County to receive a liquor license at the end of Prohibition in 1933, actually has roots that predate the historic building at Lemon and First streets in Neptune Beach.

Peter Jensen, the bar's first owner and patriarch of the Jensen family, began selling bootleg liquor during the Prohibition era from his grocery store -- where the Shorelines Gift Shop now stands -- to wealthy Northerners who vacationed in Atlantic Beach.

Nancy Jensen, Peter's granddaughter and the current owner of the bar along with her four children, said her grandfather would sell the liquor from the grocery store and her grandmother would sneak it inside the grocery bags. Her father, William "Pete" Jensen, would then deliver the groceries in a horse and cart, unaware that the bags contained "bootleg hootch."

"My father told me there were so many bootleggers at the Beach that they wore badges to keep from shooting each other," she said.

Jensen said her grandfather would get his "white lightning," as the illegal liquor was called, from the premier bootlegger in the area, who lived in Palm Valley. The bootlegger's grandson is now a regular at Pete's, she said.

The elder Jensen was also the city's first acting city clerk, tax collector and was at one time a town marshal, a title that was held also by Jim Jarboe Sr.

Pete's became lucrative enough that when Prohibition ended in 1933, Peter Jensen applied for a liquor license and Pete's Bar was established in a 20-by-40-foot room. Seventy-seven years later, Pete's Bar is a Beaches and Jacksonville tradition....

...Pete's goes beyond the bar cliche "where everybody knows your name." On a typical day, surfers and "beach bums" could be rubbing elbows with local executives in suits or Jacksonville Jaguars players. The atmosphere at Pete's is relaxed, and the bar is well known for its affordable drinks and 25-cent pool tables...
