I was looking through some Russian hockey players' bios and noticing that their birthplaces were all listed "[city], Russian SFSR, USSR". That struck me as odd, until I realised that I was actually alive while the Soviet Union existed, but I have no memory of what a world with the Soviet Union meant. It's only because I studied Cold War history that I can begin to understand this nation which existed in my lifetime, yet also didn't.
To me, and probably most people my age too, the USSR is part of the past, the part of the past we know through black-and-white photos, filed away with JFK and Martin Luther King, Thatcher and Ho Chi Minh, no more real than the Ottoman Empire or Napoleonic France. And yet, it's recent and modern enough that it had its own Internet domain (.su), and someone born in Moscow, Kiev, Vladivostok or Riga on the same day as I was will always be writing "SOVIET UNION" as their country of birth...
The men
We scattered Ruth's Dad's ashes on Christmas Morning, off the beach at Chanory Point, on the South side of the Black Isle.
Derrick was a great man for sport and the outdoors, and a championship swimmer, as well as a Scottish level Cricketer and Hockey player.
He loved Christmas, and it was fitting that we scattered his ashes into the sea and on the beach on Christmas Morning, before going back to our house and drinking a rather nice champagne in his memory.
I took my camera - as always - but hung back as Dick - his son - and the Grandsons prepared to scatter the ashes themselves. Ruth, her Mum and Sister in law (and me) stayed further back on the beach, perhaps subconsciously following the Highland tradition of only men - and blood relatives - at the graveside.
The weather was glorious, and I must say that if I was to choose a spot for my mortal remains, Chanory Point would be pretty close to the top of the list.
