Robert Kubica's car after accident during Ronde di Andora Rally in Italy last weekend.

He hit a guardrail, the rail pierced the firewall, went through Kubica's limbs (nearly severing his right hand) and out the back of the car, at which point the car spun to a stop...

As of Wednesday, February 09, Kubica is still in critical condition, and doctors were able to repair much of the tendon damage and reattach his right hand. On Monday, he was able to move the fingers of his reattached hand, and knows of his condition.

BIO: Robert Kubica is a 22-year-old race driver, best known for his Formula One racing. he is currently contracted to drive for the newly-christened Lotus-Renault GP F1 team, but his accident last weekend, occurring just weeks before the start of the Formula One 2011 World Championship, will sideline him for much of the season, pretty much ending his season before it began.

Doctors expect that Kubica will be in the hospital for two to three weeks, and require between five months to a year of rehabilitation. As a consequence, there are people that doubt he will recover well enough to be able to race at all, putting the future of his racing career in general in doubt.

Yesterday I had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on my left shoulder. I also happen to be left handed. Please don't desert me if I am slow in giving comments. Everything is taking longer. Surgery took 2 1/2 hours - on Thursday I'll tell how I did it.
The rotator cuff helps to lift and rotate the arm and to stabilize the ball of the shoulder within the joint. The rotator cuff can be torn from a single traumatic injury. Patients often report recurrent shoulder pain for several months and a specific injury that triggered the onset of the pain. A cuff tear may also happen at the same time as another injury to the shoulder, such as a fracture or dislocation. Most tears, however, are the result of overuse of these muscles and tendons over a period of years. People who are especially at risk for overuse are those who engage in repetitive overhead motions. These include participants in sports such as baseball, tennis, weight lifting, and rowing. Rotator cuff tears are most common in people who are over the age of 40. Younger people tend to have rotator cuff tears following acute trauma or repetitive overhead work or sports activity.
