Repairing my Fuji S3's damaged Firewire and USB port
I bought this camera body from a good friend for almost nothing, about a year ago. I took it knowing that it had been well used and needed some TLC. So far it's been a great camera (albeit with the known speed issues dealing with the raw files).
This weekend I was feeling adventurous and armed with a smaller soldering iron tip I figured I would give it a go. I should disclaim that I've been into electronics and building stuff since I was 12 - so I have some experience in working with ICs and other electrostatic-sensitive devices - doing this sort of thing without the know-how is very dangerous to your camera gear (plus, I found out how to do it from someone with access to a service manual :-)
I got both ports fixed, but I came to the conclusion that the design is quite poor and there is little protection against strain on the ports. USB as a surface-mount part should be more reinforced. Time to upgrade to a D90 or D300.
Touring Setup
Jandd front and rear racks
Novara panniers with cooking/food supply up front. Thermarest on top.
On the rear rack is sleeping bag and tent
Trailer holds everything else (clothes, electronics, maps. repair stuffs, laptop etc.
I wouldn't take the trailer on a tour with descents. It is unstable to brake with on a downhill above 30 mph (manual says 25 max)
