    bottom bracket
  • The bottom bracket on a bicycle connects the crankset to the bicycle and allows the crankset to rotate freely. It contains a spindle to which the crankset is attached and the bearings that allow the spindle and cranks to rotate. The chainrings and pedals are attached to the cranks.

  • A bicycle component that consists of the crank axle (bottom bracket spindle) and ball bearings. Crankarms are bolted onto the bottom bracket.

  • There are actually two meanings of bottom bracket. It’s the term used to describe the cylindrical shell at the bottom center of the frame that the crankset (the part the pedals turn) is attached too.

    thread
  • Clothes

  • a fine cord of twisted fibers (of cotton or silk or wool or nylon etc.) used in sewing and weaving

  • pass a thread through; "thread a needle"

  • A long, thin strand of cotton, nylon, or other fibers used in sewing or weaving

  • Cotton, nylon, or other fibers spun into long, thin strands and used for sewing

  • weave: to move or cause to move in a sinuous, spiral, or circular course; "the river winds through the hills"; "the path meanders through the vineyards"; "sometimes, the gout wanders through the entire body"

    repair
  • Fix or mend (a thing suffering from damage or a fault)

  • a formal way of referring to the condition of something; "the building was in good repair"

  • restore by replacing a part or putting together what is torn or broken; "She repaired her TV set"; "Repair my shoes please"

  • Put right (a damaged relationship or unwelcome situation)

  • the act of putting something in working order again

  • Make good (such damage) by fixing or repairing it

Part Four ? Restoration

We had an unbelievable amount of headaches in the process of putting this bike together. Most were to do with the bottom bracket (where the pedals connect through). First, we got a British one, but discovered that the threads were incompatible. Next, we tried Italian, which also didn't work. Finally, we discovered that we needed a French part to match the bicycle make. Unfortunately, that didn't match up with our new Shimano 105 crankset. In the end, we had to not only buy an older style bottom bracket, but also dig up the original crankset (rendering our expensive Shimano 105 replacement worthless).

This meant that our new shifter set-up (shifter + brakes on the same handle) would not work. Which also rendered that new part worthless. So we had to switch back to old-fashioned shifters that mount on the actual frame - my preference, anyhow.

Other difficulties arose, such as the new brakes not fitting properly (we had to bore out the holes), and certain issues with the front derailer.

But it's all finished now, thank God.
I think Dad popped a few blood vessels...

Sean fought a great struggle with a bottom bracket repair. Ultimately the cup face sheared off with the threads of the cup still within the shell. We couldn't figure out what to do, and called the Bike Kitchen for expert suggestions. They had no idea what to do either,

but ultimately Sean manhandled it with thes pliers, and emerged victorious. We called the Bike Kitchen to gloat.
