Building Houses 2 - kingfisher

Building Houses 2 - kingfisher

When we returned to the area in 1980, we bought a lot in Beavercreek and built another house. It was a larger tri level of 4300 sq. ft. This time, I drew my own plans and put in the foundation, in addition to doing the same things I did in 1972. Again, my wife procured the materials. She also did all of the wallpapering. We still live in this house. As it is now 27 years old, I have gotten into the repairs that come with that age. I re-roofed it in 2003. This year, I replaced the furnace and heat pump with instruction from Tom Kelley. I am currently re-siding it and putting in new windows. As always, I do all of the repairs and replacements that are needed. Part of the challenge is figuring how to do a two man job alone. I have a neighbor (a Republican) who helps, (along with my wife) when I most need it.

In 2000, we found a lake lot at a good price and I started drawing plans. It initially planned as a 700 sq. ft. retreat but grew into a 3100 sq. ft. house. This time, I wanted to do it all myself. I also wanted to take my time and enjoy it. The first two houses were each built in nine months. With this one there was no deadline. I looked for deals on materials and have done well at building materials auctions and lumber out of business sales. Examples (all new items): 9 Anderson Narrowline windows for $30 each, 10 interior pine doors for $106 total, oak flooring for $1.00 per sq. ft., 1200 feet of poplar baseboard and door /window trim for $40, and it goes on and on.

And, I have done essentially all of it myself. It is about 90% done now. It's all framed, bricked and dry walled. The furnace and heat pump are in. I have several fun jobs left. I have the materials there for building a deck on the back and 30 cabinets. Here are some pictures of the fun I have had along the way:

Project 365 #126: 060511 The Bane Of My Life

I'm not feeling too clever tonight - I sense a nice lump will shortly appear somewhere in my neck.

Anyway, for today you get a shot taken earlier on in my office.

Sneaking in behind the blind you'll see our good friend Sol. Our daytime companion, our shining friend and the source of most of the energy on our planet. She pumps out 3.8 x 10^26W and seemingly about 90% of it shines through my office windows.

It's just a horrible heat trap, and every single person who walks into the room now says "Christ it's hot in here" or some variation thereof.

It's possibly one of the hottest rooms in the building, and it houses one of the people least well equipped to deal with heat. Sometimes life is cruel. ;)

I think we're investigating ways to do something about it. I hope we reach a resolution soon, as we're now having to schedule any work that requires any degree of concentration to happen in the morning.

Bah.
