Today didn't quite turn out as exciting as I anticipated...
We had a World Diabetes Day event scheduled downtown with the City Mayor giving a speach, children singing, and someone reading off names of some people with diabetes who live in Colorado Springs or know someone here... It was scheduled to start rather early, about 4:00pm. Considering that most people work till 5:00pm, not sure what they expected.
By the time I got off work, got the kids, fought with the traffic, we got there a little before 5:00pm and everything was done, everyone were gone!
I saw a local JDRF coordinator and she told me it was pathetic. Almost no one came to see the Mayor, eight kids came to sing, etc. Too bad!
Oh, and the first thing my kids said was: "where are the snacks and hot drinks they promised?".. Good question.
On a lighter note, we had a different type of school scheduled for later tonight. The Pump School!
They hooked us up with a cable (free to us, $30 in a store), that loads data into carelink.minimed.com, where physicians can check it and give you feedbacks.
At least it wasn't all bad :-) We had the meter for a while, just never used it because I didn't have the cable and because I didn't have the time to do it.

I took injections, first with syringes and then with insulin pens, for over 15 years before I started on the pump. By the time I switched over I was up to a minimum of five injections a day, and on most days took closer to eight. This meant that I had to be comfortable injecting almost anywhere—I even did it occasionally while riding the bus or SkyTrain, through my clothing. Still, when I got food I would often have to go find a table (not necessarily and easy task with a visual impairment!), sit down, draw up my dose (after first calculating it), and then administer it before I could eat. My most freeing moment after starting on the pump was when I was standing in line at Starbucks and had bolused before I reached the counter to order! With the touch bolus feature on my pump I'm able to bolus through my clothing by entering the number of carbohydrates I'm about to eat (this can also be done by entering insulin by units), which I'm able to do in seconds. No one even realizes what I'm doing or that I have type 1 diabetes. Today I ordered food from the cafeteria and bolused as I walked to my table. It's moments like that when I feel like the pump has truly given me something close to a normal life.
