The Westin Miyako Kyoto is a 501-room hotel perched on 55,000 square meters of landscaped garden in the Higashiyama hills. The Miyako began life as a teahouse and the Yoshimizuen Garden opened by Nihei Nishimura in 1890 before reopening in 1900 as the first Western style hotel in Kyoto. Over the years, the hotel has hosted numerous heads of state and celebrities--the lobby is lined with photos of past guests ranging from Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein to Queen Elizabeth II and Ronald Reagan. In 2002 became property of Starwood Hotels.
The Miyako offers both western style rooms in its main building, and Japanese style accommodations in the Karuka-an, a traditional teahouse, which was first built in 1933 and renovated to accommodate guests in 1992, and the Kasui-en Annex, designed by Murano Togo (? ???), which opened in 1960. Both buildings are surrounded by the Kasui-en Gardens a guests can embark on a half-mile birdwatching trail that winds along Mount Kacho.
