We always get a good hearty laugh at the trend pieces in newspapers and magazines about how much money you can save by growing your own vegetables. What we've learned over the last few years as veggie gardeners is that it's a hobby that is rewarding in almost countless ways, but "saving money on food" is really not one of them. So imagine our surprise when our grocery store recently started carrying fancy "heirloom" black tomatoes and bright red sweet frying peppers for the first time. Hey! We grow those things, and, unlike most of our crops, we grow them prolifically! Then we took a gander at the prices our grocery store is getting for black tomatoes and sweet red frying peppers, and CHAMPION! We are saving money by growing them ourselves! So this is not just a picture of peppers. This is a picture, as it turns out, of solid gold peppers.

It's no secret that the economy is bad everywhere, right?

And yet the Bush Administration just bought $500,000 worth of new china. (And it isn't even dishwasher safe!)

Meanwhile, poor puppies are unable to order take out pizza.

Food prices went up when fuel prices increased--something about farmers driving to market. But fuel prices went down and food prices did not.

Something is wrong here!
