Tad's Steakhouse!

This is low budget steak!

Wow, are they still around? I say this because this joint (there used to be quite a few in the NYC area) are now but extinct. I think the 34th street one is the last remaining one. Think of this as an old New York city dining institution. Now, when I say "institution" I don't mean Like the "Four Seasons", "Sardis" or "Gage and Tollner" in Brooklyn or the old Russian Tea room - I mean in "institution" like mental hospital “institution”, no really, the old time places filled with bums, bag-ladies, students, hippies, tourists, cops, working girls, their heyday being somewhere around the early 80s when they started to die out - the working man places - which there were a lot, Nathan's hotdogs in Coney Island where celebrities and the common man rubbed elbows to eat their famous franks, French fries like no others, and fried clam strips and the occasional frog legs, believe it or not, but alas, it's just another crappy fast food dump now in the decaying island of Dutch named Coney rabbits that is just another inner city slum, no more famous people, remember, the Brooklyn Dodgers left for the West Coast and the soul of that city has never been the same or recovered from it!

We still have the places - the HEAVNLY Jewish Delis with mounds of Russian dressing atop corned beef or fatty hand sliced (it cost more but it’s worth it) pastrami, rye bread (makes a good sandwich!) pickles from a barrel somewhere near Delancy street, steaming gallons of salty penicillin like for the cold or flu - chicken matzo soup with noodles - its curative mysteries we shall never know, and Knishes - two whole different types or styles - the flat processed ones from the dirty water hot dog sellers, and the homemade Knish Knosh ones looking fat and round like a Russian grandmother would make all splattered with grainy yellow mustard and filled with either potatoes, spinach, or kasha also known as buckwheat! Egg Creams that would almost be tonic like as they would soothe you after a heavy nosh of meats and such - not Kosher mind you because of the milk, but weren‘t Jewish. The Second ave. Deli is gone - it‘s owner killed, the Carnegie is still there, and Katz Deli is there too, but it ain’t the same since they sold it I think. I could go on…

But NYC cafeterias too many to name or remember, many that I never saw because I wasn’t born then, but I did go to Chock Full of Nuts coffee houses for thin hamburgers and hotdogs, kind Southern black waitresses, and that sandwich my mother used to eat there with her coffee - the one with the cream cheese and the date nut raisin bread. What a gem that was, they have tried to revive the Chock Full of Nuts chain in some parts - there is one in Long Island oddly enough, but they are not the same as the original one and the date nut sandwich is not the same, instead they try to emulate - unsuccessfully I think the Starbucks coffee house chain, but no thanks. There was also a sausage place called Zum-Zum which was big in the 70s, assorted coffee houses, and greasy spoon diners, the famous Automat I saw dying out serving its last geriatric Manhattan patrons, the Soho hippie diner called "Food" I think it was - my dad used to take me there. There also was the "Ideal" German restaurant, more of a greasy spoon diner, where the food was inexpensive and good, and you could get little glasses of Heineken served with a working mans portion of potato pancakes and sauerbraten. I remember at the Ideal - which is now sadly defunct, along with the whole :German Town" culinary experience, they would make a whole big breakfast for you at the lunch counter - eggs any style, bacon, or mammoth slices of libercasse (sp) a pork thing which to me was a combo of Spam and baloney all fried up in some golden heavenly grease that of course wasn't good for you - but tasted all so good for the soul and all of this, the German American boys behind the counter would ask you if you wanted fries or home fries or mashed potatoes! I went with a side of mashed with my sunny side eggs. Really freaking strange it was, but I still remember how good it was as the fat and the yolks kind of skirted the mash and the crispy baloney thing. Try it sometime you won’t be disappointed.

Heidi's Perfect Kangaroo Marinade

Heidi's Perfect Kangaroo Marinade

Here it is, the secret to cooking this healthy meat like a gourmet chef!!

(Click "All Sizes" for the bigger readable size)

This marinating process makes kangaroo steaks taste better than beef fillets - at half the price. This marinade softens the meat and removes the sharpness which is sometimes a bit harsh in kangaroo meat.

Almost foolproof, as long as you don't overcook the steaks!!
