    underfloor heating
  • Underfloor heating and cooling is a form of central heating and cooling which achieves indoor climate control for thermal comfort using conduction, radiation and convection.

  • Heated screeds or electrical elements laid underneath tiles or hot water pipes within a screed. Always follow the manufacturers installation recommendations.  Due to the complexity of this subject please call the Biscem helpline on: 01924 362081

    boiler
  • A fuel-burning apparatus or container for heating water, in particular

  • sealed vessel where water is converted to steam

  • A household device providing a hot-water supply or serving a central heating system

  • A tank for generating steam under pressure in a steam engine

  • kettle: a metal pot for stewing or boiling; usually has a lid

  • A boiler is a closed vessel in which water or other fluid is heated. The heated or vaporized fluid exits the boiler for use in various processes or heating applications.

"Ondol" Underfloor Heating

Seen at Sudoguksan (Water Works Hill) Museum of Housing and Living, just east of downtown Incheon. Water Works Hill hosted a shantytown, made up of displaced rural peasants and Northern refugees, which lasted through the industrialization years until being gentrified in 1996; there is a museum dedicated to life in the shantytown, a valuable resource to remember a bygone era.

The traditional method of heating in Korean homes is ondol, using underfloor paths to pipe heated air through. During the industrial era, heat was generated by burning coal canisters, often as a result of cooking in the kitchen. Hot air from the canisters often left deposits inside the paths, reducing the effectiveness of the heating system, and specialized contractors made a fortune by removing the deposits from the paths.

The ondol remains in use today, though in modern homes and apartments, water pipes are used instead, and the heating hot water is supplied by a boiler, or in case of apartment complexes, a central heating plant.

Bourges Solaire 2

Bourges Solaire 2

In Bourges (north-central France), a whole new neighbourhood was built according to the HQE (High Environmental Quality) standard. The houses are made of wood panels and a solid wood structure, which is not that common in France. They are equipped with solar thermal panels for hot-water production. A natural gas wall-hung combi-boiler and underfloor low temperature heating round up the technical fixtures.
The fresh-air intake for the ventilation goes though pipes laid about 1,50 m deep in the ground. The system pre-heats the fresh air in winter and cools it in summer.
