Vintage Ceiling Tile & Asbestos Adhesive

Vintage Ceiling Tile & Asbestos Adhesive

Partial view of ceiling showing 1-ft. x 1-ft. square non-asbestos ceiling tile, some areas of missing tiles with exposed asbestos adhesive, and gypsum panel ceiling substrate above.

For the careful observer, one may notice that there are actually two different types of 1x1 ceiling tile present in this image, both with very similar perforated patterns; an older (original) tile with a slightly brighter appearance and a "newer" replacement tile with very faint off-white coloration by comparison.

Further distinctions bewteen the two types of ceiling tile also include a different number of perforation holes on the tiles' surface uniform grid-pattern (older=22x22 and newer=23x23).

Although the most telling difference between the two types of tiles is the matrix composition of each (older is brownish cellulose and newer is whitish mineral wool) which also seems to affect the general appearance of the holes' darkness, especially when side-by-side. Both types of tile in this example are non-asbestos.

Ceiling Tile Asbestos Adhesive

Ceiling Tile Asbestos Adhesive

With a suspended 2'x4' ceiling panel system removed, one observes a patterned series of adhesive daubs or glue pods applied to a plaster ceiling substrate above.

The residual glue spots formerly adhered 1-ft. square ceiling tiles in place on plaster substrate, four daubs per tile. In this case, the adhesive daubs were tested and found to contain asbestos and the 2-layer plaster ceiling system does not.

If removal of asbestos-containing ceiling tile adhesive is deemed necessary, the techniques typically employed involve manual scraping or chipping with implementation of wet-method prototcols inside negative-pressure enclosures. In some cases, the entire ceiling substrate is removed as well.
