Dog Whisperer: The Rescue

Canadian Forces (CF) Search and Rescue (SAR) members along with staff from the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) staff transfer a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) patient from the CF SAR CH-146 Griffon Helicopter at UHWI in Kingston, Jamaica on August 27, 2011 as part of Operation (Op) JAGUAR.

Op JAGUAR is Canada's contribution of military aviation and search-and-rescue (SAR) capability to support the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and to conduct essential training for Canadian Forces search-and-rescue teams.

Task Force (TF) Jamaica is responsible for flying life-saving missions such SAR and medical evacuations in support of JDF operations.

The SAR teams deployed with TF Jamaica will also conduct training activities required to ensure the long-term availability of SAR aircrew for operations in Canada.

Deploying in August, the aircraft and personnel of TF Jamaica will return to Canada when the JDF search-and-rescue capability is sufficiently developed to meet the operational requirement.

Des techniciens en recherche et sauvetage (SAR) des Forces canadiennes (FC) et des membres du personnel de l’hopital universitaire des Antilles (UHWI) retirent un patient qui a fait l’objet d’une evacuation sanitaire de l’helicoptere SAR CH146 Griffon des Forces canadiennes a l’UHWI, a Kingston (Jamaique), le 27 aout 2011, dans le cadre de l’operation Jaguar.

L’operation Jaguar est la contribution du Canada aux efforts en vue de mettre en place une capacite d’aviation militaire et de recherche et sauvetage dans la Force de defense de la Jamaique (FDJ). Il s’agit aussi d’une occasion de tenir des exercices essentiels pour les equipes canadiennes de recherche et sauvetage.

La Force operationnelle (FO) en Jamaique est responsable de missions aeriennes de recherche et sauvetage et d’evacuation de blesses ayant pour but d’appuyer les operations de la FDJ. Les equipes de SAR de la FO Jamaique prendront egalement part a des exercices essentiels pour assurer leur disponibilite operationnelle a long terme. Partis en aout, les aeronefs et le personnel de la FO Jamaique rentreront au Canada lorsque la capacite de recherche et sauvetage de la FDJ sera prete a satisfaire a ses exigences operationnelles.

Rescue ships were usually converted small coastal passenger vessels requisitioned by the Admiralty to follow convoys picking up survivors from torpedoed ships, in order to leave the escorts free to carry out their main task of protecting the convoy. They retained their civilian crew but Royal Navy personnel manned the weapons, radio equipment and medical facilities.
The rescue ships were armed, since they made no claim to being hospital ships, they were painted grey, subject to attack like any other ship at sea and were fitted with HF/DF to help locate U boats.
Empire Rest, unlike the earlier rescue ships was a converted Corvette, although her faster speed of 16 knots was an advantage, her short length, large overhanging stern, large bow flare and tumble-home sides meant she was not as handy for boat and rescue work as the slab sided merchant vessels.

Taylor McAden is a volunteer fireman who is always the first to plunge into danger. But there is one risk he can't bring himself to take: falling in love. Then he meets Denise Holden, a single mother who has moved to the small town of Edenton, North Carolina, to build a new life. A near fatal car crash will bring these two together, but before that can happen, Taylor must look into his past and see if it's not too late to take a chance on the future.

Denise Holden's life is a fragile mix of luck and hard work. A single mom of a speech-delayed son, Denise makes ends meet by moving to the small town of Edenton, North Carolina, and working the late shift as a waitress. When Denise crashes her car and her son Kyle flees the accident and disappears into the storm, her only stroke of luck is the quick arrival of Taylor McAden, a volunteer fireman. Taylor's got a knack for fixing people, and he can't help wanting to be involved with Denise beyond the initial rescue of Kyle.
As Taylor helps Denise recover from the accident and get to know the town, they discover a sweet bond and a magical chemistry that pulls them closer and closer. Though Taylor fits perfectly into Denise's family, he's unable to open his heart to being loved by her. As Taylor struggles to understand his conflicting desires, Denise questions the wisdom of gambling with Kyle's and her own emotions.
Author Nicholas Sparks has found a loyal audience for his stories about the internal battles that accompany the arrival of love. His heroes may be truck-driving manly men and his heroines emotional swamis, but it's easy to overlook the traditional roles when the complexities of human relationships are so beautifully described. Sparks has found his forte, and this novel is sure to be as popular as his earlier works. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien
