Bow Hunting for Beginners -- Learn the Basics of Bowhunting

All too often a budding hunter will rush right out, buy the first bow they see at the sporting goods store, grab some arrows and head right out for a weekend of outdoor fun.

Sadly, the experience is usually less than positive and he arrives home tired and dejected with nothing to show for his effort. The bow ends up in the rafters in the garage and the dream of an enjoyable hobby disappears.

Another scenario that occurs frequently is going out with a buddy or acquaintance presenting himself as a self-proclaimed “expert.” You know the type. He knows it all and proceeds to let you know everything you are doing “wrong.”

Before you know it you have connected the experience with the jerk and you let the whole experience fade into oblivion never willing to try it again.

I recently took up photography as a hobby and wanted to take beautiful landscape pictures. My husband, on the other hand, wanted to capture wildlife. We had spent a better part of the week taking long hikes, hauling heavy camera equipment at several locations within the parks hunting the elusive wildlife. We even hired a hiking local guide to take us to wildlife. At one point, he even pulled out elk and moose calls in hopes of finding something, anything, to no avail. So, on the way drive to the airport, along the side of the road in Kootenay National Park, we finally see what my husband wanted, a great big black bear. When we first saw the bear, there was a problem, the bear was eating and would not look up. Thinking quickly, my husband imitated our guide by making a moose call. Who knows what the bear was thinking, all we know is he was looking up and I took this great picture before he starting eating again. Needless to say, my husband is quite happy with this photo.

From this junction of the Snake and Hoback Rivers the Hunt group passed through Jackson Hole, over Teton Pass and on to Henry's Fort in Idaho. In this area, Hoback and his companions were detached from the expedition to trap beaver. The following summer the eastbound Astorians, led by Robert Stuart, met them in the wilderness, starving and destitute, having been robbed by the Indians. They were given clothing and equipment and continued hunting and trapping until the winter of 1813 when they were killed by the Indians.
