RECESSION:: The Impact in the UK Middle Market Fashion Industry

The recession in 2008-2009 was the most debated subject universally caused by debts and over spending. The aim of the research scrutinizes the scale of the recession to the external market which ultimately reduces customer spending within clothing retailers. The investigation examines the collapse upon the middle market to which has been generally damaged. The primary and secondary research monitors and demonstrates the effects of both internal and external aspects of the recession that deteriorates in the recovery stages of the economy. These findings show the changes in the retailing environment which are triggered by recession, altering the infrastructures to tailor the needs of the consumer profile, that emerged from the credit crunch. Furthermore to this, the value retailers are advancing from the increasing boom as the middle market is declining. The balance of the aspects such as product, price, place, promotion, people, physical presence and evidence are incorporated to further lure consumers spending and footfall.

I talked to my advisor today.
I'm an economics major and I love it. I also love the art of fashion, yes the art. I do consider it an art form. Lets not even start on the criteria right now...

Anyway, i was at a loss of what I wanted to write about for my term paper. So I decided to take a risk. I decided after our talk to write about the up and coming high fashion mall in Bellevue, and why the high fashion industry is doing so well in this one isolated spot during a recession. Luxury goods in a recession?. Totally interesting to me but I'm freaking out. My advisor was supportive of my risk taking but i'm scared. I mean i've never written a term paper, and well, I want an A. Sometimes though its not about the grade this is college and this is the chance for me to take up what I really want to do and educate myself where I want to be educated. So here it goes, oh god...

This pic is from a fashion show that Kristen did at school. "Right at the beginning of the recession, they came out with the theme "Luxe," as in luxurious. I was soooooo mad that they were so out of touch and that they picked the most expensive theme for all of the students (and actually they changed the theme a few weeks before the show when they realized this, and didn't tell us). And so I decided to make it all out of garbage. This gown is comprised of curtains, tablecloths, sheets, old costume fabric, stuffing I got from a local floral shop that the flowers were shipped with for protection, and other things I found around the house. This out of touch experience with the fashion industry was a nice push in the direction of fashion recycling. Thank goodness for jerks :) *Modeling by Simi, Photography by Taylor Park
