Since moving into the city I've noticed that bubbles seem to spontaneously appear in sitting water taken from the municipal water supply (tap water). These bubbles don't rise, but just stay as they are and form on any objects submerged in the water, as well. I suspect that it's due to fluoridation of the water, but I'm not certain.

Either way, I looked into a mug before taking a drink and noticed the bubbles, and was inspired. Having captive bubbles seemed a great opportunity for a macro of some sort, and here we are.

This was taken such that the lens peered into the mug. The lighting wasn't very good, so I used a FL-50R off-camera to increase the brightness. Depending on the angle of the camera and the angle of the flash this created a visible surface reflection that interfered with the picture, and thus the flash was kept angled slightly up, with a diffuser mounted. I believe I used autofocus here, and was very careful about watching to make sure that no aspect of the lens dipped into the water.

Shot with an Olympus E-520 and Zuiko Digital 50mm f/2.0 macro lens with a Hoya UV filter mounted. Shot hand-held with IS mode 1 enabled. An Olympus FL-50R flash was used off-camera, nearby, not angled to point into the cup, with a diffuser on. This is an uncropped image. The maximum image resolution has been scaled down for upload.
