OPTICAL FILTER HANDLING - FILTER HANDLING

OPTICAL FILTER HANDLING - FURNACE FILTER REVIEW.

Optical Filter Handling

optical filter handling

    optical filter
  • Optical filters, generally, belong to one of two categories. The simplest, physically, is the absorptive filter, while the latter category, that of interference or dichroic filters, can be quite complex.

  • (Optical Filters) Additives which selectively absorb, reflect, or transmit a certain area of the solar energy spectrum,  thus enabling manipulation of that radiation in a desired way.

  • In the optical regime, an element that selectively transmits or blocks a range of wavelengths, polarizations, etc., or selectively displaces a beam, e.g. , by virtue of birefringence.

    handling
  • The act of taking or holding something in the hands

  • The packaging and labeling of something to be shipped

  • the action of touching with the hands (or the skillful use of the hands) or by the use of mechanical means

  • manual (or mechanical) carrying or moving or delivering or working with something

  • treatment: the management of someone or something; "the handling of prisoners"; "the treatment of water sewage"; "the right to equal treatment in the criminal justice system"

Lens: Leica DC-Vario Elmar 1:3.3 4.9 / 1 49.2 mm ASPH (25 300mm) The lens of the LEICA V-LUX 20 enables the user to use the enormous range of 25 to 300 mm for both still and movie photography. For macro photography, extremely wide-angle views or zooming in on distant subjects this camera captures amazingly sharp images across the entire wide-angle to telephoto range. When shooting with longer focal lenghts (telephoto) or in poor light, optical image stabilization effectively prevents blurred and shaky pictures. The camera features a 14.5 megapixel sensor. Flexbile use of the sensor format guarantees full exploitation of the entire zoom range (35 mm equivalent: 25 300 mm) in all possible image aspect ratios, no matter whether set for 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9. The maximum resolution of 12.1 megapixels is available for images shot with an aspect ratio of 4:3 Simple, Intuitive Handling Leica cameras set the standards for the best possible handling. With the LEICA V-LUX 20, the ergonomically positioned and logically arranged control elements of the camera ensure intuitive handling of the camera even by less experienced photographers. A wide range of automated functions ensures simple, straightforward operations in any situation. At the same time, manual setting options for apertures and shutter speeds provide greater creative scope for more demanding users. The modeselection dial on the camera's top plate allows fast and simple switching betw

size comparison, cosina/voigtländer ultron 40/2 vs. pentax smc-a 50/2.

I recently picked up the Voigtlander Ultron 40/2 to use as my primary lens on the Pentax MX. Smaller lens to go with a smaller body, naturally. Also, for a standard, I really prefer the 40-45mm lengths vs the 50-55mm lengths. My options were basically the Ultron, the old Pentax 40/2.8 pancake, or the Pentax Limited 43/1.9. The Limited is a beautiful lens, and I still want to get one some day, but it doesn't seem much smaller than a normal Pentax standard. The 40/2.8 pancake demands high prices, but it's not the sharpest thing in the world… I don't feel like researching right now, but my guess is that it's a Tessar design. I was wrong, it's a 5 elements/4 groups construction. I still want to get one some day, because it's tiny, but not until I find a good deal, and not until I have a good 30-35mm range prime, and a good 75-100mm range prime.

The Ultron is larger than a pancake, but smaller than a standard Pentax prime. Feel of the focus is the best I have felt on any lens I have ever touched, hands down. Aperture is the same terrible combination of full- and half-stop clicks as a genuine Pentax lens. Aperture ring is a little hard to get a grip on, even with my tiny fingers. Lens is solid, and heavy; heavier than the Pentax 50/2. I haven't developed anything I've shot with it, but I'm pretty confident in its abilities. Unfortunately, it seems CV decided to discontinue the Pentax mount, so that's a bummer. Will report back on IQ, etc, but others have determined that it's a sharp, contrasty lens.

A few final observations: The CV uses aspheric elements… I do not know if these are plastic, hybrid, or glass. I doubt glass, due to cost. I doubt plastic due to weight. So, my guess is hybrid. CV only includes a Leica-sized lens cap, to go on the hood. This cap is incredibly thick, plus the addition of the hood, and your small lens just got considerably beefier. The CV has 9 curved blades, which is fantastic. The aperture looks relatively round at most stops. Optical design is 6 elements (one aspheric) in 5 groups on the Ultron, 5 in 5 on the 50/2, 5 in 4 on the 40/2.8 pancake, and 7 in 6 on the 43/1.9 Limited.

Size comparison. Left: Cosina/Voigtlander Ultron 40/2, Right: Pentax SMC-A 50/2.
Top: Focus at infinity, Bottom: Focus at closest (.38m for Cosina/Voigtlander, .45m for Pentax).

Hartl Optical Disk

Hartl Optical Disk

This Hartl Optical Disk from 1925 is part of the "Dynamic Equilibrium" display at the Nott Memorial on the campus of Union College in Schenectady. The display explores the intersection of art and science.

The Hartl Optical Disk is designed to demonstrate important principles of optics, such as reflection by various shapes of mirrors, refraction through several types of lenses, total internal reflection and dispersion. The apparatus consists of a satin finished metallic disc about 30mm in diameter, graduated around the circumference. On the back of the disc is a handle that is used to to rotate the disk through 360 degrees in a vertical line about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the plane and passing through the center of the disc. The disc is partially shield by a fully-adjustable hood. On the hood, a circular plate has slits to allow rays of light to pass through and fall on the optical elements. The hood also has a slot for placing red, green, and blue filters.

Now for the photo info: I started out thinking that a 5 exposure HDR would look good, however the background was too overpowering. So I clipped the disk from the photo, and made two copies of the background. The base copy was convered into B&W and the overlying copy was blured slightly and made 40% transparent.

Let me know what you think of it...
