Bayer 1
Herbert Bayer Earthworks Park was initially intended to be a piece of art that integrated the structure of dams into the natural landscape through art. Over the last 25 years, the earthworks park has become an essential ecosystem that harbors biodiversity and still maintains most of the artforms originally created. Due to the stream flowing through the park now being a salmon run, the riparian zone is protected to better serve the home of the salmon. This has somewhat diminished the original concept of the viewing pleasure from the viewpoint of Herbert Bayer's creation but is now something greater for the earth.

The central image is of the double-ring pond and beyond is a portion of the remainder of the park. The park is a thriving ecosystem, yet manicured with lawns that are regularly mowed. For this park to become a "natural-landscape" (which is a word used by Herbert Bayer for incorporating the dams in to the landscape), the surrounding secondary forest should be allowed to begin to move in naturally and wetlands could have the chance to form where they should be. To me, this pond is vacant of the natural life it needs. There's grass and nothing else. For proper stormwater management, plants are an important accessory to filtering water along with soil.
