The Day of Reckoning

The Day of Reckoning

Samish Bay | Press L to view in lightbox (must see large!)

What a Labor Day weekend!

I was out camping with my cousin and her friends for the past three days at Larrabee State Park in Bellingham, Washington located off Chuckanut Drive. It was a park-and-camp -- not my idea of camping -- but there were many trails near the campsite which made up for it.

We arrived at the campsite just before noon on Saturday. After pitching and securing our tent, my cousin Wendy and I went for a hike to Fragrance Lake. It was a 2 mile steep uphill hike. The elevation gain was around 1,100 ft if I recall correctly, but nothing compared to the hike we did last Tuesday at West Defiance in the Cascades. The hike was well worth it -- the lake was really beautiful. When we got there, the water was so clear and there were virtually no ripples. I was setting up my tripod when a group arrived. They had a dog which started to jump and play in the water. Then the kids were swimming with the dog too! I gave up waiting for my shot. We walked around the lake and couldn't find a better spot to take the shot, plus the wind kicked up. The near perfect mirror was gone. We decided to hike back.

After resting for an hour, I looked at the map again and found the trail to Samish Bay, a perfect place to observe sunset. Too tired to look for the best spot (I thought) we settled to stay at the first spot we found and waited for sunset there. It turns out that place offered a really good foreground. I realized this after scouting for two other spots nearby on the following day.

I got to try out my 1.8 ND 4mm thick Schneider glass filter for the first time on this shot. I was scouring the web for the Big Stopper by Lee Filters, but couldn't find it anywhere. 10 stops of light loss would have been perfect for long exposure shots, but 6 stops will do (as I found out). I would have been able to try this out with a 17-35mm Nikkor glass I bought, but it arrived defective! I still have yet to return that sucker.

Will be catching up to your streams!

Barbados chattel house turned into a store at Bathsheba

Barbados chattel house turned into a store at Bathsheba

From the Barbados.org web site:

The Chattel House was originally the design of the plantation workers home. They were modest wooden buildings set on blocks so that they could be easily moved from one leaseholding to another. In early settlement days, home owners were not necessarily landowners, but part of a tenantry system of the plantations.

The houses were constructed to be transportable in the event of landlord and tenant disputes. The name chattel referred to the fact that they were movable property.

The steep gable roof, constructed of corrugated iron, were adapted to suit the climate of heavy rains and winds. The roofs angle deflect the wind rather than provide a platform for it to lift off.

The fretwork around the windows and openings were placed there to provide shade and a filter against the rain.Over the years fretwork has became an attractive architectural feature in its own right. Many chattel homes have distinctive jalousie windows, with tree sets of hinges - Two vertical and one horizontal, that allows maximum flexibility against the wind and sun.
