degree of figurative distance or separation; "just one remove from madness" or "it imitates at many removes a Shakespearean tragedy";
A large rug, typically an oriental one
cover completely, as if with a carpet; "flowers carpeted the meadows"
A thick or soft expanse or layer of something

removing the carpeting
The carpet is held down with tack strips (nasty spiked pieces of wood) and the pad is held down with lots of staples. So we have to remove the carpet, slice it into manageable pieces for the garbage collectors, and then pull out all the sharp rusty things it leaves in the floor.
Note that the room is freshly painted! (Pittsburgh Paints Manor Hall in "Mother of Pearl", satin finish. Also we prime everything before painting, one coat each. Covered the green area above the fireplace beautifully!)
