120410 The Alberto Ruiz Artisan Collection is brought to you by Novica in Association with National Geograhic. This beautiful piece was handcrafted by Alberto Ruiz in Mexico. An artisan story card will be included with your purchase. Each color I use comes from natural dyes and has a particular symbolism, explains Zapotec weaver Alberto Ru z. ''The colors are meant to replicate nature, so grays resemble cloudy days, green the Oaxaca hills in the summer time, and red reflects our sunsets.'' Ru z weaves this wool rug on a traditional loom. Because each rug is individually woven, measurements could vary +/- 5 cm. Because color is obtained from natural dyes, tones may differ slightly. ; About the Artist: Alberto Ruiz; Alberto Ruiz Garcia is the fourth generation in a family dedicated to weaving Zapotec rugs. 'I remember as a child watching my father working on the loom while my mother and grandmother carded and dyed the wool so that the men could weave it. We shear the wool, spin it and dye it with tints from the cochineal insect, pomegranate peel, bark from the huajal tree that thrives here, as well as oak and pecan bark. Stones, dried flowers, almost all the rocks and flowers here yield natural colors.' Features: -Rug. -100pct wool construction. -Hand crafted artisan quality. -Size may vary slightly. -All natural dyes.

Zapotec Woman

This Zapotec ceramic figure from Oaxaca is part of the May collection in St Louis. This convinces me that the garment the woman is wearing is not a quechquemitl (closed shoulder cape) but rather a huipil. I base this on the size of the garment and the way it drapes on her body. Huipiles are still worn with the arms outside the arm openings on the coast of Oaxaca today, and Cordry shows photo in his book of a Mixtec woman from Pinotepa Nacional Oaxaca wearing her huipil turned sideways. It looks just like this
