Recall

Recall

A friend gave me her DSC-F717 after she purchased a new Sony. She used this camera for work for a very short time taking weddings pictures, etc., until the image sensor failed, and she hadnt used it for a couple of years because of that. We found out that Sony is conducting a recall on several digital cameras and camcorders with the same problem. I sent the camera to Laredo Texas to have it serviced and repaired and just got it back a few days ago. Sony paid for the repair and shipping both ways. It now takes great pictures and works like a new camera.

NOTE: It appears that the problems trace to certain models of image sensor chips manufactured by Sony between 2002 and 2004. Initial service advisories by Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and Konica Minolta were soon followed by announcements by Nikon, Ricoh, and Olympus. Affected cameras were all manufactured between 2002 and 2004, the underlying problems have apparently been found and corrected, so no cameras currently on the market are affected. New cameras purchased today will not be affected by this problem.
In all cases, the manufacturers involved are offering free repair of affected products, even if the original warranty period has expired. If you have a product that displays the problem described here, you must contact the manufacturer to arrange for the repair. This is important. -- None of the manufacturers involved are contacting consumers to announce a blanket recall: It's up to the consumer to contact them to take advantage of the free repair service.

I was given an Olympia NK3030 by my brother who in turn had it passed onto him.

The camera was brand new, never been used.

He suggested that I run a film throught it.

I have had this camera in my possession for about a year and decided to give it a go on Saturday.

I bought a 24 exposure film and I was a bit dubious once I started snapping. It did not sound healthy as the film was going through - and lo and behold I haven't got 24 pics - "quelle surprise" - I think not!

Apparently these cameras were developed as rip-offs to try to confuse people, i.e. pass off Olympia as Olympus for example.

Well I looked up this particular model on the t'internet and found it retails for 689 rupees which converts to ?7.43.

Much was made about the packaging - not a good sign - the box is big (yes) red (yes) and a cool design ( well that's opinion).

It transpires they also come with a 7 day warranty....yes days!!

Well it was an interesting experiment, the cost of the film and getting the pics put onto CD cost ?10.47 - so more than the camera is worth.

The upshot is - the "cool" packaging will be going in the recycling bin and the rest of the gubbins in with all the other rubbish.

I am a little bit sad, I was hoping I might have something else to play with so I may treat myself to a Holga instead.

It was actually quite exciting having to await the results of my endeavours ;-)
