Day 73 - My new toy (camera)

Day 73 - My new toy (camera)

March 14, 2010 - "My new toy (camera)"

I bought myself a new toy at the MoMA yesterday.

"Toy" being the key word there. A "Diana Mini" 35mm plastic camera. Part of a genre of cameras known as "Toy Cameras"... famous for their plastic fixed lenses... cheap plastic bodies that leak light... and the almost "haunting" quality of the images they take.

Toy cameras like the Diana Mini... Diana F+... Holga CFN 120... The Oktomat... the Kiev 4 M... and the famous Lomo LC-A - are all integral parts of a photographic movement known as "Lomography". Born in the 1990s, the Lomography Movement follows "Ten Golden Rules", which are as follows...

1) Take your camera everywhere you go.
2) Use it any time - day or night
3) Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it.
4)Try the shot "from the hip".
5) Approach the objects of your lomographic desire as close as possible
6) Don't think!
7) Be fast.
8) You don't have to know beforehand what you captured on film
9) Afterwards either.
10) Don't worry about any rules!

I've wanted one of these cameras for a while... yet I kept putting it off. Well... gazing at one in the store at the Museum of Modern Art yesterday - something in me said "Why not today?".

Why not today?

And so I have a new toy to play with!

(Life is good!)

Jupiter-3 50/1.5, front element

Jupiter-3 50/1.5, front element

This is a beautiful example of a Jupiter-3, the fastest 50 mm lens regularly available from FSU ("Former Soviet Union") sources. An optical clone of Zeiss' "Sonnar" lens formula, this particular example is a fantastic performer, especially when shooting with available (i.e., low) light. According to some interpretations, the first two digits of the serial number indicate year of manufacture, which in this case would be 1976. This is usually an estimate only. Excellent optical condition, with some scattered dust. Mechanics are excellent. Includes rear cap and vented metal hood. Plastic case/stand shown not included.
