AF was not bad at all , it was at least as fast as the D300.
the guy was moving quite erratically and fast , the camera was locked on to desk via electric code and I could not move it as I wanted for framing a moving subject. As considering that , the AF was quite good at least much better than the 50D AF and a bit better than the D300 at least in one shot mode.
after using Nikon for 2 years , I dont believe Nikon AF surprior thing any more , in fact , I believe despite of all negaitive reviews against the 5D2 AF, the 5D2 af is more accurate and fast to lock on a moving person than the overly raved 51pt Af of the D300/D700(actually Nikon 51 AF is slow to lock on aything moving,especially in 14bit mode).
it does not matter how many AF pts are there if it is slow as Nikons.
after playing with the 5D2 , I felt the D700 AF slower and my D300 AF in 14bit way too slow ,especially in inital AF acquisition time.
also, I thought although the D700 produced almost Chroma noise free images at ISO4000, its lacking some kind of pop or 3D look and I prefered more detialed and sharp 5D2 images.
Seems to me that many people that believe the AF performance on the 5DII is subpar seem to equate fast FPS/burst speed with an effective AF system. However, as you know the MK3 was producing lots of out of focus images with a great burst speed.
To me, initial adquisition and the ability to retain focus are the primary key for a good AF system. I guess I find the AF system in the 5DII to be quite good and good enough (not great) to capture BIFs including those with quite erratic behavior that the 40D or the D90 can not get.
So, it is a bit of serious issue that many many people simply try to use number of AF points or frame per second of a camera, to measure how good AF of a camera is, but it can not tell you how good the AF actually is in acquisition speed in single servo mode.
That said , the 7D AF seems a lot better than all other cameras I have tested and if the 7D IQ rivals to the 5D2 IQ , I will get it as I have a few EFS lenses that do not fit on the full frame body.
BTW, this guy still shoot film and Digital and he still needs his own dark room.

Strobist : bare 580 camera right in front of her, bare 580 camera left to the right side of her, gel'd 580 on the ground to the entrance of the building, trigged with PW TT5.
Review : 580 camera left was not trigged for unknown reason and not enough lighting for her legs. Less 3D on her as only one lighting source toward her body .
